1 Warren Community School 117 Eastern Road Warren, Maine Deborah Howard, Principal Justin Kangas, Assistant Principal Susan Overlock & Niki Willis, Administrative Assistants please submit newsletter items by Wednesday to SAVE THE DATES March 31stFun Night for grades 4-6 (stay tuned for more info) April 5thBookfair & Ice Cream Social (stay tuned for more info) April 12thEarly Release Day 1:00pm Dismissal April 17th-21st Spring Break Hello again Warren, March 10, 2017 I thought I would take a quick minute this week to go over some housekeeping things. A reminder that Spring is not quite here The weather is rather moody of late and so we ask that you continue to send your children with weather appropriate attire. We have been struggling with what to do with an increasing number of students coming to school with no jackets. Having one on hand just in case would be extremely helpful. Also, testing season is here. In two weeks we start MEA testing one morning a week for grades 3-6. Please make sure your students are getting a good night's sleep and eating a healthy breakfast. March and April will be MEAs, and May will be NWEAs. It is a busy time for us here at WCS, teachers and students included I would also like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone who makes this wonderful school work. We have had an author visit by Matt Tavares, Seabird Sue came into our second grade classrooms and we had a couple days full of fun activities for Read Across America. The amount of time our teachers put into organizing all of this is incredible considering everything they already do for our children. These fun events are a blast but it is always important to remember that they don't just happen on their own There are always some amazing people behind the scenes coordinating the effort Finally, coming up, we have a Fun Night scheduled for the grades 4-6 kiddos on March 31st Get it on your calendars It should be loads of...well...fun :) Enjoy your weekend, folks, and stay safe Justin Kangas, Assistant Principal Warren Community School Reminder from the office.. Please remember to call the office if your child is home sick. The office opens at 8:00am. If you need to call before then, we do have an answering machine that you may leave a message on stating your child s name and reason they are out. If your child is absent and we do not hear from a parent/guardian they will be marked unexcused.

4 healthy SLeePING HABITS How much sleep is enough? There are no exact number of hours of sleep required by all kids in a certain age group, but the national Sleep Foundation suggests: Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) need 10 to 13 hours of sleep a night. School-age kids (ages 6 to 13) need 9 to 11 hours of sleep a night. Teens (ages 14 to 17) need 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night. The average kid has a busy day. There s school, taking care of pets, playing with friends, participating in sports practice or other activities, and doing homework. By the end of the day, kids need sleep. However, a lot of kids are not getting the sleep they need. national experts surveyed kids about their sleep habits and here s what they learned: 70% of kids said they wish they could get more sleep. 71% of kids said they feel sleepy or very sleepy when it s time to wake up for school. 25% of kids said they feel tired at school every single day. Five tips for bedtime It may be a challenge to make a change to your children s bedtime routine, but if you stick to it your efforts will pay off. These ideas can help: 1. Help your child prepare for school the night before by laying out their clothes, backpack, etc. 2. Set up a routine where kids slow down before bed and go to bed about the same time each night. 3. avoid screen time at least one hour before bedtime. 4. make the bedroom a cozy environment where your child wants to be. 5. make the bedroom a screen-free zone. 6.

As a parent, you want to do everything possible to be sure your child is prepared to make the most of their time in school and while participating in after-school activities that includes having the required immunizations and physicals. We know that children who have health insurance are better able to learn in school and they are less likely to miss school because they are sick. Your child or teen may be eligible for free or low-cost health insurance through MaineCare or the Children s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Children or teens in a family of four earning up to $52,404 a year may qualify. Once they re enrolled, they ll have access to a wide range of important health services regular check- ups, shots, dentist visits, eye exams, hospital care, mental health services, prescriptions, and more. Getting a child covered gives parents one less thing to worry about. And don t forget, if your child is already enrolled in these programs, it is important to renew their coverage every year so they can get the care they need when they need it. For more information about Connecting Kids to Coverage, call the Consumers for Affordable Health Care Helpline at to discuss your child s eligibility and get connected to a local enrollment specialist who can help you complete a MaineCare/CHIP application. Parents may be eligible for MaineCare, too. You can enroll any day of the year, but why wait?
