Just wanted to touch base with everyone to remind families about the upcoming schedule. We are now entering a busy concert band season. Please remember that after school rehearsals have been on the online calendar since this past summer and are the only times that each group will rehearse with percussionists before concerts. Mr. Bayerle and I record grades for each rehearsal and performance as a part of the requirements for successful completion of band classes at HC. Please see the schedule (left, and online at henryclayband.org): Tuesday, November 9th: Concert Band/Wind Ensemble 7:00 PM in Lassiter Theater. Please note the HC Concert Band ladies will need to wear their own ALL "dressy" BLACK attire tonight, as there was an issue with the company that placed our order on the concert black dresses months ago. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but each student will have the proper formal concert attire for the December concert. Also, please see the HC Steel Band rehearsal schedule (left, and online at henryclayband.org). We were the first high school steel band in the state and have an outstanding history and tradition with this ensemble. It is open to all percussionists, wind players and color guard students alike and we encourage any and all students having a desire to participate in another musical avenue and opportunity to attend. No prior steel band experience is necessary, as Justin will work with the students to transfer their knowledge of music into the proper drumming technique and reading skills in this ensemble! Steel Band will meet regularly on Wednesdays after school in the band room from 3:45-5:30 PM and is a great experience!! We look forward to the HC concert season! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions! Sincerely, Bill Kite Director of Bands, Henry Clay High School william.kite@fayette.kyschools.us or

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 2 of 12 Band Families, As we have finished an exciting marching season and are now looking forward to concert performances, it is also a critical time for our fundraising efforts. As everyone knows, bingo is our major fundraiser. We have been working diligently to make this program successful, and many people have contributed to this effort. Bingo has struggled the past few months, and we are now in the position of losing our bingo license if the next few weeks of bingo sessions are not a success. The charitable gaming laws require that we earn profit of a certain percentage for the year or we cannot operate our bingo session. We must have profitable sessions to keep our percentage above the required minimum. Without bingo income, our program suffers and all students are affected. Without another source to replace the bingo income, we must focus our best efforts to make this program succeed. Diane Bradley and Jean O'Daniel have outlined our needs in another article in this newsletter. Please read and see how you can help. PLEASE step up and help support our band program! Contact Kathy and Russell Edwards with any questions at kathyandrussell@hotmail.com. Thank you, President s Pen HC Band Booster Co-Presidents Kathy & Russell Edwards, HCBB Co-Presidents kathyandrussell@hotmail.com or Hello HC Band Family! Hospitality Committee Notes I want to thank all the parents that helped out with Hospitality during marching season this year! SO MANY people are involved with getting the food donated, packing it, loading it onto the Hospitality Cart, getting it on the truck, unloading, serving, reloading, unloading again and finally getting everything back in the Hospitality room at the end of some VERY long days, that it would be impossible to name everyone. I am pretty sure that almost EVERYONE had a hand in feeding these hungry kids, staff and pit crew this year. It is SO APPRECIATED, not only by me, but EVERY student knows how well we take care of them. I am sure that parents that may not be able to attend a competition are relieved to know that their child will not be hungry during the day! Special thanks go to the Edwards family for coordinating the two cookouts that we had this year. They were quite a hit!! The Hospitality Committee will continue to provide refreshments for some of the concerts/events during the rest of the school year, but at a slightly slower pace!! As the parent of a senior, Holden (Mohawk) Bradley, I will be looking for a replacement for next year. I have spoken to a couple of people that are interested, but there is room for several if you want to work as a team. Let me know if you are interested and I will fill you in on all the details. I DO keep a notebook of tips and guidelines, so you won t be left without a clue.besides, I will always be available for advice, if it is wanted. Diane Bradley, Hospitality, or scrabrose@windstream.net

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 3 of 12 Hi Everybody, CRITICAL BINGO NEWS!! Marching band is finished for the year, but bingo is not! As you may know, bingo is a year-round, WEEKLY fundraiser which is on target to contribute more than $50,000 this year toward the expenses of ALL of the band groups, including the concert band, wind ensemble, jazz and lab bands, percussion, steel drum and winter guard. Although we've been having great attendance and sales at bingo in recent months, we're still recovering from poor sales last year and early this year, which in a nutshell means that in order to retain our bingo license and our ability to raise ANY money from bingo during the 2011 calendar year, we are REQUIRED by state law and the state gaming commission to meet an average profit margin, between now and the end of December; higher than any we've met in recent memory. SO -- here's our challenge to you -- if you're an enthusiastic, energetic and ACCURATE pulltab seller, WE NEED YOU to help us bring in every possible dollar to meet our profit margin challenge by signing up to sell pulltabs on one or more Saturdays in November and December! If you can think of ways to help us minimize our expenses during these two months, we'd love to hear your thoughts. Along these lines, if you're willing to eat at home and bring your own drinks during this short time period, the money we otherwise would spend on concession costs can be added directly to our profits for each night. At this point, every single dollar counts! We know this is a busy time for everybody, but if you're one of our best sellers we really, REALLY need your help right now! Please sign up to work bingo on any Saturday in November and December (except Christmas) by ing, phoning or texting: CONTACT: DIANE BRADLEY: scrabrose@windstream.net, Or JEAN O DANIEL: jean.odaniel@insightbb.com,

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 5 of 12 Kroger Cards offer a wonderful opportunity for the band! Kroger donates $4 to the band for every $100 loaded on a HC Band card; the card can then be used just like a prepaid credit or debit card for all Kroger purchases including prescriptions and gas. The cards come loaded with $5 or $10 on them. When time to reload, it can be done right at the check out lane before you begin your purchases. Just give the card to the cashier, tell them the amount you would like to add to the card and pay that amount via cash, check, credit or debit card. Your Kroger Gift Card can also be used to purchase a number of gift cards for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. available right at your Kroger store instead of having to travel to each store, restaurant, etc. to purchase gift cards! For more information or to purchase a card, contact Geni Osborn at: gosborn7@aol.com. We Still Need You!! We still have ONE crucial Booster position to fill: Vice President. The Vice-President(s) assists the president and helps with various committees. It is basically a year of learning the details of the Booster organization in preparation for becoming president the following year. Please consider the Vice President position and contact Kathy and Russell Edwards at: kathyandrussell@hotmail.com HC Band DVD Preview Don t miss your chance to purchase a keepsake of the 2010 HCMB season on DVD! 6 Henry Clay Band Notes Page 6 of 12 ***ADDITIONAL ITEMS OF IMPORTANCE*** * Exciting HC Jazz Ensemble News! Congratulations to the ensemble for being selected for the second time in four years (only eligible every four years) to the Kentucky Music Educator s Association (KMEA) Annual Conference, held every February in Louisville. Performance time has been set for Friday, February 11 th at 12:50 PM in the Kentucky Convention Center in Cascade A-B room. The ensemble will perform in front of thousands of music educators at all levels, professional musicians, college music majors, free-lance professionals, conductors, etc.! The Cascade room is the largest performance hall at the convention center next to the Exhibit Hall! Dr. Gordon Towell, professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at MSU, has agreed to perform and work with the ensemble as guest artist for the conference! Please be checking the online calendar at for rehearsal/performance dates, and the website for updates! * Even More HCJE News! The HC Jazz Ensemble has also been invited by Miles Osland, professor of saxophone studies at UK and co-director of DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra (DOJO) to open for DOJO at Comedy Off Broadway at Lexington Green on Monday, January 31, 2011! Again, watch for information updates on the website! * Henry Clay High School Blue Devils Band Facebook Page: We have a new Facebook Page! It is the OFFICIAL Facebook communication site of the Henry Clay High School Blue Devils Band, maintained by the HC Band Boosters for students, parents and the public. If you are a Facebook member, search for the above title and click the Like button to join and stay updated on everything HC Band-related via Facebook! * Concert Band Season Uniform-Including Fleeces: As concert band season approaches, students need to have the official and unofficial uniforms ready. Official concert wear for male students is the HC tuxedo, black dress shoes and black mid-calf level socks. Please check your tuxes for fit before the first concert! Official dress for female students is the HC long black concert dress. However, due to an issue with the company that placed our order on the concert black dresses months ago for new students, the female students will wear their own all-black dressy attire until the concert dresses arrive. In addition, every student should have a blue HC Band shirt and fleece. Every year we end up with missing shirts and fleeces. If your student happened to accidentally end up with two fleeces in their belongings, please contact Leigh Grossman at: lag830@insightbb.com, so we can get it returned to the rightful owner. In addition, having your fleece embroidered makes identification MUCH EASIER. Cost is $6.36, and if interested, you may contact Karen Rardin at kardan3201@insightbb.com. This should eliminate missing and replacement fleece costs.

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 8 of HENRY CLAY MARCHING BLUE DEVILS BAND Dear HCMB Family, FINAL THOUGHTS AND REFLECTIONS I would like to thank everyone involved in making this season an exciting character-building process! The students deserve enormous credit for their own "persevering spirit," drive, work ethic, and discipline in this maturation and team/family building project! They had the opportunity to give up and let down and they chose to push themselves to the end. Each week they grew, worked, performed at higher levels and committed to carrying themselves with dignity and class. I am proud to be a part of such an outstanding group of young people who I will be honored to say that I knew in the future when they go on to fulfill dreams and do bigger and better things! To the seniors and section leaders, you believed in the process and proved to be great leaders! You served the band and realized that it was about the whole group and as a result, experienced the thrill of victory again and tremendous growth in maturity! Thank you to the parents and family members who stood by our sides all season through difficulty and victory! Your support, energy, and commitment helped push this family to new levels at the end of the season! Special thanks to the parents and alumni who served the family this season in any of the following capacities: Pit Crew, Hospitality Crew, Chaperones, Uniform Crew, Booster Officers, etc. (I wish I could name everyone, but fear I will leave someone out). You are the "behind the scenes" crew that makes the show continue on at all cost! We are not able to succeed in this project without your loyalty, work, effort, and commitment to these students! A BIG thanks goes to the staff this year! This is one of the finest groups of people I have had the honor and privilege with which to work! To Mr. Bayerle, Justin, Barbara, Kelli, Jason, and Mr. Lidyard, thanks for all of your experience, hours and hours of dedicated commitment, leadership, creativity and professionalism! As we wrap up the marching band season, it is important to keep some perspective on what the students were able to accomplish this season. While we were admittedly disappointed with the end result in terms of placement, we must not forget the growth of maturity and improved levels of performance we experienced this season! This band was able to put together a great show and should be proud of the legacy they leave behind in the HC Band program. The positive attitude, leadership examples, and ultimately "family" building that took place will last for years to come and has generated some genuine excitement for the future! I would like to see the program continue to build in excitement and energy! We must continue to show personal discipline and commitment to a process much bigger than ourselves through increased intensity of support, improved attendance, great character students and the creation of a warm "family" atmosphere! I'm proud to be a part of the HC band program and look forward to working with you all in the future! Sincerely, Bill Kite Director of Bands Henry Clay High School

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 9 of VALUE CARDS We are still selling VALUE CARDS and need your help! The cards are $10 and worth hundreds of dollars in discounts! Please call Dana or at: danasilver@insightbb.com. Parents need to sign for the cards, and I can arrange to meet you after practice or whenever is convenient. Remember, they make GREAT stocking stuffers for the Holidays!! Also, those who currently have Value Cards need to turn the money into the band box! You may get more cards to sell at anytime, but the money from the first round of sale needs to be in now. The HC Band family would like to extend a warm welcome to UK Student Teacher, Jas Lidyard. Mr. Lidyard is a senior at UK, completing coursework for a BMME (Bachelor of Music Education). He is a student of Mr. Mark Clodfelter, UK Professor of Trumpets. Mr. Lidyard graduated from Conner HS in Hebron, KY in While at UK, he has performed with the UK Concert Band, Symphony Band, Wind Ensemble, Lab Band, Jazz Ensemble, Trumpet Ensemble and the UK Symphony Orchestra, as well as the award-winning UK Trumpet Quintet, which placed 4 th in the 2010 NTC (National Trumpet Competition) Ensemble Division in Washington, D.C. Upon graduating this December, Mr. Lidyard hopes to find a local teaching position at the high school level, or return to UK to begin graduate studies on his Masters. He would like to give a special thanks to the staff, students and parents of the HC Band program for making his semester of student teaching such an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience. WELCOME MR. JAS LIDYARD!
