It is hard to believe that the year 2018 flew by so fast. As the year starts, we all begin to think of our daily habits and what we can do to improve our health. As we all know, staying active can keep you feeling and looking your best. So, for the year 2019, try to make sure you keep an active lifestyle. Regular exercise can help prevent heart disease, diabetes, and certain forms of cancer; it can also reduce pain associated with arthritis. It can improve your balance, help prevent falls, and increase your endurance. Always remember to check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise program. Please check your calendar monthly because Valerie has exercises scheduled, and don t forget that everyone is welcome to use the exercise room. It s such a pleasure to have all of you as residents here at Regency Retirement Village and I wish all of you a very Happy New Year! Recent Events Disney Christmas Day December 5th Mickey Mouse is 90!

He certainly joined a great group of residents.

2 Recent Events Disney Christmas Day December 5th Mickey Mouse is 90! He can now join our Nifty Nineties Club. He certainly joined a great group of residents. We celebrated Mickey Mouse and all things Disney on Walt Disney s birthday with Disney Christmas Day. We had Mickey Mouse Oreos, pineapple punch, and ice cream bars all Disney related foods, of course. We wore some Disney Christmas hats & headbands that were Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Star Wars characters. We learned a lot about the man behind it all, Walt Disney. We had a great time! Christmas Parade December 6th Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle All the Way! We drove along Main Street of Morristown for the Annual Christmas Parade. We had a wonderful time snacking on pizza, chips, and cookies. We sang lots of Christmas songs and waved to all the spectators who came to see the parade. This is definitely one of our favorite activities at Christmastime, and we look forward to going again next year! 1 January 2019 Newsletter

Ugly Sweaters & Gingerbread Houses December 10th & 12th We decided to get creative this year!

3 Ugly Sweaters & Gingerbread Houses December 10th & 12th We decided to get creative this year! Several residents had a great time decorating their shirts/sweaters into Ugly Christmas sweaters to wear to the Resident/Employee Christmas Party. They were very creative! First place went to Irene Fain and second went to Donna Wills. We also tried our hand at building gingerbread houses. It was pretty interesting and messy, but we had a great time! Louise Pellett won 1st place, Katy Burkhart placed 2nd, and Clydene Styles won 3rd place in the Gingerbread House Contest. Special thanks to Amy with Amedisys for the supplies and all her help in construction! Can t wait to try these again next year. Resident/Employee Christmas Party December 14th Since Regency first opened in 1984, this tradition has been the same. Employees and residents gather to share fellowship, food, and fun. The Dietary Team prepared a delightful plate of chicken salad, cheese, fruit, and homemade fudge. Several employees participated in the Ugly Sweater Contest. This year we even had an Ugly Sweater contest for our residents! As always, Santa and Mrs. Claus delivered Christmas presents to all employees generously given by our residents. It was a wonderful afternoon! We look forward to continuing the tradition next year. Regency Retirement Village of Morristown 2

Upcoming Events Charity Bingo January 15th at 2:30 pm Every other month Regency welcomes residents, families, and visitors to join us in playing Bingo.

Seated Tai Chi Exercise Class Wednesdays at 2:00 pm We are excited to begin a new seated Tai Chi Exercise Class. Larry McGowan is going to lead this class.

Beginning Wednesday, January 2nd at 2:00 pm in the Parlor. White Elephant with Trudy January 3rd at 3:00 pm This has become such a fun tradition!

4 Upcoming Events Charity Bingo January 15th at 2:30 pm Every other month Regency welcomes residents, families, and visitors to join us in playing Bingo. We request a $2 donation per card, with all proceeds benefiting a local nonprofit organization. We give away some great prizes and have a fun time playing Bingo. Come join the fun! Seated Tai Chi Exercise Class Wednesdays at 2:00 pm We are excited to begin a new seated Tai Chi Exercise Class. Larry McGowan is going to lead this class. Tai chi is a gentle exercise that improves balance and reduces fall risk. It consists of making slow, graceful movements while breathing deeply. Come see what this is all about. Beginning Wednesday, January 2nd at 2:00 pm in the Parlor. White Elephant with Trudy January 3rd at 3:00 pm This has become such a fun tradition! Every year, just after Christmas, Trudy hosts a White Elephant gift exchange. You do not need to buy anything, just bring something from your apartment you are no longer using, or bring that gift you received for Christmas that you just don t have a use for whatever you would like to bring. We will do the White Elephant exchange and bring home a new treasure. 3 January 2019 Newsletter

Waffle Brunch January 30th at 10:00 am It s back!! A resident favorite Waffle Brunch.

You are welcome to bring a guest, but just remember that you must purchase a guest meal ticket and make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance.

5 FUNtastic Friday - Superheroes January 4th at 2:30 pm Have you ever pretended to be a superhero? Or do you have a favorite shirt or outfit that depicts your favorite superhero? We will feature our superheroes in this month s FUNtastic Friday. Come join us in the Parlor at 2:30 pm for some Super FUN! Pizza Party January 17th at 5:30 pm We will be having a delicious treat of pizza on Thursday, January 17th. We will have our Pizza Party in the Main Dining Room at 5:30 pm. You MUST sign up if you would like pizza so we know how much to order. Please sign up in the Green Book located outside the Coffee Shop on 2nd floor. Please see Valerie with any questions. Our Beautiful Winter Village Special thanks to Shelly Walker for putting up our lovely Winter Village! Shelly volunteers to put the village up every year and she does a wonderful job. We just want to step into the village and take a walk around! Thanks for putting a smile on our face, Shelly. 6 Community Spotlight Pearl Martin Pearl was born in Sneedville, TN and grew up with 12 brothers and sisters. Her father was the Sheriff in Hancock County for 3 terms; Pearl jokes she lived in jail for 12 years. She married her husband John in They moved to Morristown in 1948 and had 3 children - Janey, Kathy, and Ed. Pearl worked for JC Penney s for 9 years and Walmart for 36 years. When her husband passed away in 2013 Pearl decided she did not want to be home all by herself, so she moved to Regency. She loves coming to see our entertainers and she really enjoys being around all the people here. Pearl has 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Fun Facts In Scotland, the custom of first-footing is an important part of the celebration of Hogmanay, or New Year s Eve Day. The first foot to cross a threshold after midnight will predict the next year s fortune. Spain rings in the New Year by eating 12 grapes at midnight, 1 for every chime of the bell. The tradition is called Las doce uvas de la suerte (The twelve grapes of luck). Eating any ring-shaped treat symbolizes coming full circle and leads to good fortune. Barb is willing to help out anywhere nursing, VIP, activities, you name it. She audits our charts for nursing. She goes on trips with the residents. She takes residents to the VA and doctor appointments. Barb also volunteers on her own time to come play the piano for our Favorite Hymn Sing Alongs. Barb is always pleasant, meticulous, and dependable. Thank you, Barb, for making Regency a better place for everyone! Employee of the Month Mike Greene Mike has been with Regency in the Maintenance Department since August, Mike is a hard worker and is devoted to providing quality maintenance service. Mike has a wonderful personality and he makes everyone laugh. He loves the residents and they love him too! Mike is very knowledgeable and accommodating. He is happy to help whoever he can, whenever he can. All he asks in return is some chocolate. Thank you, Mike, for your dedication, attitude, and great work ethic. It is employees like you who make Regency a better place for our residents!
