1 Eudunda Area School Commitment - Excellence - Respect FORTNIGHTLY NEWS 2 Reserve Road Eudunda 5374 Phone: fax: dl.0755_info@schools.sa.edu.au website: Principal: Mrs LYNNE-MAREE HASTINGS. Senior Leaders: Mr DAVID CLUSE & Mrs FIONA SCHILLER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Hello everyone, We have some very exciting events coming up in the next two weeks as you can see from the calendar list to the right. This Sunday our Year 12 Tourism class is flying to Sydney in order to complete one of their major tasks for their study. The students will be interviewing tourists, tourist operators and critiquing Sydney as an Australian and international destination for tourism against theory and historic models. We wish them well and, also in amongst their work, hope they have a wonderful time! Next week we have our Year 9 Roundtable, where our Year 9 students have to present to an assessing panel of people their work studied on Sustainability. This is a great system where parents are able to observe first hand the learning that their child is achieving. Good luck to our Year 9s! Our Eudunda Area School Choir is soon performing at the Festival Theatre as a part of the SA Schools Festival of Music. This also highlights some of the Performing Arts learning that our students are doing with Fiona Schiller. It is an excellent experience for our students who have participated in rehearsals and will have a well-developed understanding of what happens behind the scenes in performance. Lastly as you will be aware our participation in the Pedal Prix is 21 years this year! Thank you to Roger Frahn and his team of staff, students, parents and volunteers assisting to make the 24 hour event an outstanding time. Have a great fortnight everyone! 4 NATIONAL SCHOOLS TREE PLANTING DAY On Friday, July 23rd, all of our primary students went to Eudunda Hill to plant trees for the National Schools Tree Planting Day. Mr. Post drove us up to the hill and we met Jim & Ronda Dunstan, as well as Jake. The Year 4-7s had to pick a R-3 student to help. Jim then gave a demonstration on how to plant a tree. Meanwhile Jake was digging holes for the trees. After Jim finished his demonstration we all went off with a buddy and started planting trees. When we had planted our tree we had to water it in. By the end of the lesson we had planted around 250 trees and shrubs. The names of the tress and shrubs are Acacia, Peppermint Gum, Tea Tree and Sheoak. Just before we left Ronda gave us a mandarin each from the school s agricultural block. A massive thank you to Mr. Post, Jim, Ronda, the teachers and Jake. Page 4
5 ERRAPA BLUE LIGHT CAMP On August 19th, Primary School Captains Taylor Suhrcke and Samantha Drummond woke up at 5.00 a.m. to get ready for the Errapa Blue Light Camp held at Iron Knob. Mr. Post picked us up at 6.00 a.m. and drove us to Kadina, where we met 17 students from other schools. We hopped on a bus to travel to Port Pirie, where we picked up another 4 students. Back on the bus we went, to go to Iron Knob where we had lunch and were introduced to the Errapa Police Officers. After lunch we got our bags and set up our beds in the dorms. Once we finished that we went to the Iron Knob Hall for 2 hours to play some leadership games, which were really fun. We then went back to the Errapa Campsite to have some free time. After free time we were put into groups to set up for breakfast, lunch and tea, as well as clean-ups, orienteering and laser skirmish teams. We then had dinner and more free time and hung out in our dorms. The following day saw a 7.00 a.m. wake up, breakfast, getting dressed, cleaning rooms for room inspection and then free time until the Errapa Police Officers arrived. At 9.00 a.m. they told us about the orienteering activity we would be doing that morning and the high ropes course (which was 4½ stories high!) we would do after lunch. Orienteering was hard work but fun. The high ropes was amazing!!! We had the choice to do three courses. A lot people froze up in the air or didn t make it, but the support provided was unbelievable. The flying fox was next at 60 metres long. Surprisingly no-one really screamed except for the male Officer, Dave - he screamed like a girl as a joke! That night we did the laser skirmish, with the green team winning the first time and the red team the second time. We all knew this was our last morning so we were pretty upset. Room inspection was at 9.00 a.m. We were told we were going to do the Leap of Faith and the 16m High Rock Wall and the Flying Fox one last time. There were two girls (Taylor was one of them), three boys and one Police Officer who made the rock wall and a few people made the Leap of Faith. We all went on the Flying Fox and then it was time to go. As we left Errapa Taylor had a ride in the undercover Police car, with the lights and sirens going. We stopped in Port Pirie for lunch on the foreshore and ate Subway. It didn t rain on the way back to Port Augusta, but it rained heavily on the way to Kadina. Mr. & Mrs. Post picked us up at a Kadina and brought us back to Eudunda. Page 5
6 SAPSASA ATHLETICS KNOCKOUT NETBALL On Friday, August 30th, seven Upper Primary students competed in the Barossa & Light Athletics Carnival. Our students represented our school well and competed to the best of their ability in every event. Most of the events had an average of 20 competitors. Results: Kiara Schick Long Jump 7th 100m (Final) 6th Samantha Drummond Shot Put 17th Joshua Drummond Shot Put 15th Taylor Suhrcke Long Jump 6th High Jump 4th Kayla Steinborner Shot Put 7th Miranda Neville-Pope Long Jump 1st * (*equalled record) 800m 6th 100m (Final) 6th Acacia Roocke Long Jump 7th Kiara and Miranda won their 100m sprint heats to make the finals. Miranda won her Long Jump which entitles her to compete in the State Finals at Mile End in Adelaide on September 23rd. Nine talented Eudunda Area School senior school students represented our school at the State Finals of Knockout Netball in Adelaide on Monday, August 19th. The team initially won a Round Robin Competition against Clare High School, Kapunda High School and Burra Community School, which then put them into the State Finals for Open Girls Netball. The girls were put in a Round Robin Competition against 11 other schools and the top teams were put into finals. After a champion effort by our local girls they made to the Grand Final against Birdwood. Unfortunately, the girls lost this game by 8 goals. It was a remarkable effort for our school to represent at such a high level when we are such a little school compared with the large schools the girls played against. A big thank you to Fiona Allchurch, Ros Schulz and Kathryn Dry for assisting with transport, coaching and managing the team in the finals. ANNA ROEBUCK SHOPPING!! Now I have your attention.
