Last Friday on the 15 th of September, our Interschool team made their way to the town oval to take part in this year s Interschool Sports Carnival. Several other schools from North Country including Menzies, Mt Margaret, Leinster, Laverton and Wiluna travelled to Leonora in the morning to compete for this year s trophy. The extremely warm day began with the 400m/800m races. Students were transitioned into their activities with the 50m/75m/100m/200m races progressing throughout the morning. Lunch was enjoyed at 12pm with the team games and championship races continuing through to the afternoon. The end of the events concluded with the students running their hearts out and cheering on their school for the final shuttle relays. Thank you to all the parents, family and community members who made it down to the oval to support our school. It was a huge day that couldn t have been possible without the hard work and effort of our staff and volunteers. Well done to Menzies for winning first place with a total of 338 points with Leonora coming second place only 3 points behind with 335 points! Menzies was also awarded the handicap trophy with the whopping score of 1919 points! 3 FORM C SCIENCE Bush Rangers Excursion For Bushrangers this semester, Form C travelled out to 4 Mile Rd out along Leinster Road for the day to study what they could discover in the area. Form C had an amazing day out bush last Thursday on the 14 th of September where they spent the day exploring and studying the natural environment along with their teachers Mr Jones, Miss Kate, Miss Fifi, Mr Luke and Senior Coordinator of Science Pathways CSIRO Dave Broun. They had a superb time checking the ground for tracks, looking for sleeping goanna holes. Taking photos of rare lizards, native flowers, wild ants, spiders and birds. Termite nests were buzzing with activity but there were no honey ants (yilintu) to be found! Students had the opportunity to learn the names of all the bush foods and medicines they came across and found some amazing critters during a biodiversity survey including a sleepy goanna and some orphaned goats! An amazing day was completed when Miss C brought out costumes that the class has been designing for a glamorous bush photo shoot.

Bush Day was a great day to be outside! It was lovely to see everyone enjoying the gorgeous weather. Fire lighting, bush walking, digging for sleeping goanna, collecting bush food and cooking damper and roo tails on the fire were the highlights of the day and enjoyed by all the parents and community members who joined us. Thank you to Dave Broun who showed students how to use binoculars to see and the motion camera to capture nature. Students learned scientific terms as well as the local Wongi words for the different plants and animals they came across. Thank you all for coming to be a part of our Semester 2 Bush Day!

RSPCA WA works directly with young people and community groups in WA, delivering presentations with the aim of educating the public about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership, while sharing the story of the world s oldest animal charity. Fiona Brown from RSPCA with her buddy Brown visited Leonora DHS to present to our students information on - Promoting responsible pet ownership Promote empathy and the appropriate treatment of all animals, based on their welfare needs. Raise awareness amongst young people of safety around animals with an emphasis on cats and dogs Reduce anti-social behaviour involving animals Reduce the number of unwanted and abandoned cats and dogs in communities Raise awareness of appropriate RSPCA campaigns

From the Principal Well done to those students who have 100% attendance for this term. Last Wednesday on the 13 th of September, twelve students enjoyed a minimorning tea to say thank you for all their hard work and dedication in coming to school every day! PBS Entries are due on Friday the 22 nd of September Thank you again to the ear bus team Paul, Lara, Karen and Dee for visiting our students at Leonora DHS this week. The ear bus foundation is excited to present to you their brand new bus that they will be using for check-ups during their visits. The artwork design used for the ear bus was inspired by a young 15 year old indigenous artist from Western Australia

From the Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers The term has come to an end very quickly! We have had an incredibly exciting and productive term 3. The Indigenous Hip Hop Project was a great success and I am very impressed with the lyrics the secondary students produced for the rap. It was lovely to see our students work together to produce the final music video. If you haven t already done so please see the link, like and share it. I believe we have had over 2000 likes already! Leonora once again hosted the interschool carnival on Friday the 15 th of September. Well done to Leonora DHS for bringing home second place and a big congratulation to Menzies for winning both outright and the handicap trophy. Thank you to St Barbara s for sending Sam and Dan down to the oval to help cook the sausages, it was greatly appreciated! Thank you also to Rene Reddingius for being our commentator for the day. Please get involved in our competition to create some graphics to represent our behaviour expectations at Leonora DHS; Care, Achieve, Respect, Engage. We would really love to have some graphics that symbolise our school s core values and represent our local community. I released a survey asking for your support to trial a slight change in the timetable for Term 4. This will not mean a decrease in instruction time for your students. The school day will commence at 8:30am. Period times and break times will remain the same. Recess and lunch will be 10 minutes earlier and the finish time is 2:30pm. Staff will then have time in the afternoon to work with myself and the deputies on planning and assessment. Out of the 83 responses, 86% support the proposal and 14% do not. Based on the survey and the unanimous support from School Council we will proceed with the trial in term 4. We are very pleased to finally have a new playground installed for our upper primary students. The soft fall has been set so I m very excited to have our students enjoying the new playground next term and for future years to come. Book character dress up day is in the first week of next term so be sure to have your costumes ready. I can t wait to see what characters you ve chosen to dress up as! I will be out of the school for the last week of the term as I will be in Perth. Wishing you all a safe and wonderful holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone back next term. Kind Regards Jennette Maxfield Principal
