2 Blurb from Amanda I like to think we had a fantastic summer with hardly any hick -ups in it. You all have been so amazing attending so many activities! This summer was one for the books.

2 2 Blurb from Amanda I like to think we had a fantastic summer with hardly any hick -ups in it. You all have been so amazing attending so many activities! This summer was one for the books. Our pig roast was amazing, Jason Hird had donated the pig and turkeys on behalf of his mother Margaret Hird. It was simply amazing and we will be sending a thank you card to them on behalf of this. All of our substitute bus drivers are back to school so we will have to play some trips by ear for September. I'm hoping we can at last get out for a fall leaf tour and stop in peers. Our volunteer Karen will be coming in to make rhubarb jam with you guys if you want to help her she would love this! Every table will get a jar of jam, yummm!! I hope everyone is taking advantage of Pearl Vision coming in and getting their glasses adjusted and cleaned for free! They want to plan to come in near the end of the year to do eye exams! Its so great that our local eye doctors are willing to do this for us. In October we will have our first crib tournament come up so start planning on who your partner will be! This is an activity that all have been requesting so here we go! Thank you everyone!

It s a great way for us to get out and get some exercise and fresh air. We meet at the front entrance way. Above we have Sandra and Dawn who went for a short walk around town with me last month, It was really wonderful.

Our local car enthusiast asked if they could come show their cars off to you guys, Integra tire was kind enough to lend us their 2 tents they had available so we would be able to enjoy rain or shine!! 9 9 Followed by supper we had The Comrades Band come play music for us. They where absolutely FANTASTIC I have not heard one bad thing about them. It was a full house and the dance floor was full. We will have to get them back again for another dance.

10 10 The Edmonton Portland Cement Company. On Hwy 16, as you pass Marlboro, stands a 56 metre high chimney stack that is a reminder of the regions industrial past. The smoke stack was part of the provinces first cement factory. In 1911, the province was awash with talk about a new industry that would produce so much wealth. An advertisement from 1911 stated, It is the biggest thing this country has ever known. A list of prominent Edmonton businessmen was involved, including Alberta s first Lieutenant Governor George H.V. Bulyea. In 1910, as the Grand Trunk Pacific rail was being laid, crews were draining a lake, where close to the surface they exposed a soft white substance called marl. It was supposed to be North Americas largest marl deposit, enough to supply 1,500 barrels a day for 40 years. The marl was made up of nearly 90% pure calcium carbonate. Clay containing silica was found 8 miles away; calcium carbonate & clay are two components of cement. The factory s location was perfect; on a rail line, with plenty of natural resources close by for fueling the plant with electricity. Edmonton was booming and the demand for cement was high. Previously cement was coming from Ontario at an inflated cost compared to what the new factory in Alberta would charge. In August 1913, the Edmonton Portland Cement Company was opened. It was a large plant with the 40 metre long rotary kilns imported from Germany. The noise from the grinding mills was deafening and dust was everywhere. A laborer was making $4 a day, approximately $100 today, which was big money back then. However, the boom days were not to last. The clay wasn t suitable for production so a new supply had to be found this was located at Jasper. The plant closed for a period during WW1 and when it reopened it ran only during summer and fall. The plant closed permanently in 1931, the machinery was exported overseas and one of the buildings was moved to Edson to be used in the Edson Arena as an ice arena.
