June was a busy month with outdoor shoots and July is shaping up to be just as busy. WCAT has momentum! We took every opportunity to do as much as possible this month to capture Wakefield activities. Festival by the Lake, the summer season opener, was a huge success; many visitors came to the truck to explore WCAT and we had a lot of happy faces when they were told about the Movies by the Lake. Relay for Life was amazing and emotional, as always. Bill Robinson and his Good News program filmed several more episodes and our experts on the Red Sox brought us up to date on this challenging season. This year s Grand March was held on the WHS field house due to rain and Sherri Raftery from the Northeast Metro Tech Drama Club, brought her students in for a talent show. Song, dance, musical performers, they were fantastic. Bob Steele came in to do a follow up to his show on casinos called the Dangers of Gambling, Steve Maio and Davit Watts, Jr. filmed another episode of Town Administrator s Report and Wakefield Alliance Against Violence (WAAV) and Wake Up had their monthly meetings. Wakefield High School held their graduation early in the month, so congratulations to everyone and good luck in the future. DO GOOD THINGS! And to close out the month, we did an early morning shoot at Wholefoods in Melrose for another Health Minute with Hallmark Health, these can be viewed on Facebook, and the same day we were at the Galvin filming Senator Jason Lewis s panel discussion with Frank DePaola, Gerald Francis and Rafael Mares about the MBTA and their service this past winter. They re working to make sure this coming winter runs as smoothly as possible.

It s a support group, a celebration and a gathering of stories. It is informational and it s emotional as well as a means to raise money towards a cause that, no doubt, has affected every single person in some way, cancer. This was Wakefield s 16th year hosting the overnight event and because of organizer efforts, it just keeps getting better. So far participants have raised over $100,300 and the money is still coming in; fundraising doesn t close out until the end of August, so for anyone interested in making a donation please visit: The event began on Friday night with the Survivor s Lap, where survivors and caregivers walked the first lap around the track. The walkers have been through so much already, they are such an inspiration as they smile the entire quarter mile around. After the first lap everyone else joined in and walked the track all night, because, as they say cancer never sleeps so neither do they. There are movies, games and other activities for those not walking. The Luminaria Ceremony is something everyone should see; bags, each with a name or message written on it, are lined around the track and at dusk a candle is lit inside each one illuminating the track with glowing tributes to those affected by cancer. Since its start in Washington in 1985, Relay for Life has raised almost $5 billion to fight cancer. In its 16 years of involvement Wakefield has raised well over $1 million alone. We even turned the truck into a mini studio to capture personal stories. This is an amazing and awe-inspiring group of people and we were honored, once again, to be part of the event.

4 Fresh On the Horizon P A G E 4 Of course the first thing that comes to mind when people think of July is the 4th, cookouts and parades. And after a two year hiatus, the parade returns in full force thanks to Pat Sullivan. He devoted months and months to ensure that the Wakefield 4th of July Parade, the 8th largest in the country, would bring out the crowds and happen flawlessly. In attendance for the parade there were bands and dance groups from all over the country, Wakefield s own champion sports teams, the Shriners in their traditional little cars and so much more. Selectmen Betsy Sheeran MC d the event to keep the crowds informed on who was approaching next. Many were excited for the return and to enhance viewer experience, WCAT staked out the perfect spot for filming. If you were out of town on the 4th, you can watch the entire event from your own couch. In mid July we begin running three Kids Video Club classes for the summer. These have grown so popular that each session took about 30 seconds to fill up. It is a good feeling knowing that students are so excited about WCAT s video classes that we have many of last year s students returning. I m sure the parents are happy to get them out of the house for a few hours and that their children are actually learning how movies are made. David Watts, Jr. is running a workshop on basic digital photography. This summer he is trimming the usual 6 week course into just 2 days. The first of three Movies by the Lake opened on July 2nd down at Lake Quannapowitt by the gazebo, the weather was terrific and the crowd of more than 300 was a great sight to see! The event is fee and fun for everyone, there are also rain dates just in case Mother Nature isn t a movie fan. August brings us Wakefield s Festival Italia, a family event with food, games and crafts. According to Paul DiNocco, this year will be better than ever, ha has some new ideas for this years event, but you ll have to see for yourself what they are. Movies by the Lake Movies by the Lake started as a brainstorm idea about what new events could bring WCAT into the community more. After conversations with the Wakefield Recreation Dept. and The Savings Bank, we are excited to bring some fun, family friendly entertainment to Wakefield. Using a town gem as our backdrop, Lake Quannapowitt, we are having a 20 foot screen brought in with full audio, so all you have to do is show up, preferably with a blanket or chair and maybe some snacks. We re taking care of the rest! The events are free and the movies are favorites for children of all ages. The movies begin around 8:30pm which is super convenient since the Library s Jazz Band performances wrap up at 8:00pm. It s only a short stroll down to the gazebo to get a good seat. As long as the weather cooperates they should all be great nights. And just in case it doesn t, there are rain dates posted on the Rec. Dept. website at Also, don t forget we will be taking food donations for the Interfaith Food Pantry at all three events.
