Each day our students build synapses and develop life lasting skills. In addition to the daily dedication to their studies, there are so many other wonderful opportunities and experiences. In just two short months here at CLPMS our students have: Had classroom visits from Therapy Dogs Participated in a Chess Tournament Led their own conferences Participated in River Week Sold magazines and collected donations to support their school Enjoyed several assemblies Helped clean up the front of the school with their PE class Had a Spirit Week Had a dance Began participating in the Give Next philanthropic foundation Worked and played at the Fall Carnival Performed in and enjoyed the Rhythms on the Poudre Continued Advertising in this newsletter does not imply endorsement by Poudre Valley School District

When I count all in my life that brings me joy, having the opportunity to serve you and your wonderful children is an honor for which I am thankful every day. Caps4Cash collect caps from Morning Fresh Dairy glass bottles (milk and juice!) and turn them in to the front office 3. Shop at Office Depot and give them CLP Middle School s ID# Aluminum Cans The PE department is collecting aluminum cans again this year. 3 PAGE 3 IB-MYP Updates November 2016 Students and staff have started the school-wide book read, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, Students and staff have been reading the book during their ELO time, watching videos, reading articles, and attending assemblies related to the topic. On October 21, 2016, the students attended an assembly on Water, School, and Life in Samburu, Kenya by Dr. Brett Bruyere from Colorado State University. Also, on November 11, 2016, during ELO, author Leah Bassoff will discuss the book she co-authored with Laura DeLuca. Lost Girl Found, that tells the story of the Lost Girls of Sudan. If you are interested in learning about the Lost Girls of Sudan, you are welcome to attend the assembly on November 11, 2016 from 1:30pm 2:10pm. Students will be creating summary activities that will be on display at our Open House on January 17, 2017 from 6pm-8pm. "This is a profound rendering of a southern Sudanese female heroine who must first go down into darkness before she can rise. Thank you for always focusing on the Big Picture as you cheer on our Pirates (article attached). Pig Roast a Success! Thank you to all of our Fall Sports Families for a wonderful Pig Roast! We had such an amazing turnout with wonderful food! I couldn t pull it off without each of you and your support. Special thanks to Kim and Erik Whitin and Tri-State Concrete and Excavation for donating this year s pig Marc Oliver for spending two days cooking it for us Gina Stewart and Christy Weston (with some help from a few boys) for spending hours picking it apart Krista Moreshead, Guadalupe Rodriguez, Michelle Curtis and Melissa Basta for setting up Bridget McKee and Donna Lamar for serving all evening Heather Tippett, the Aberle s, Bigge s, and Antillon s for staying behind to clean up. It s been a busy and exciting season, and our athletes have learned so much from each of you. We are moving right into Boys Basketball. 8 PAGE 8 From Mr. Neisler and Mr. Hall This year for river week our pirates decided to put a new twist on an age-old problem: how to catch a fish. Our design challenge was to use our innovation skills to manufacture fishing poles using only the equipment at our school. Last year we were lucky enough to be awarded a grant for the purchase of eight 3D printers, and we have been looking for fun learning opportunities where we can incorporate this cutting-edge technology. In addition to the 3D printer we were able to get a 3D scanner...something no other school in the district has. The first part of our process was a trip along the river bank to select the straightest and sturdiest willow branches we could find to serve as the rod. After removing burrs and extra branches, the students sanded their rod smooth and installed metal screw eyes for the fishing line to pass through. The reel for each pole was designed with an online computer aided drafting program called tinkercad. Each student designed a unique attachment system customized for their particular willow branch. We experimented by printing the reels using various types of plastic and assembled some finished products. The only remaining challenge was how to convince a fish to bite. For this part of the challenge we collaborated with Mr. Hall s pottery classes. Pottery students sculpted various microfauna from the river that a fish might want to eat: crayfish, worms, dragonflies. Design students then used the 3D scanner to capture a digital image of the sculptures we could import into TinkerCAD. The software allowed us to scale each sculpture down to whatever size we wanted and print out flexible rubber copies to use as lures. During river week we tried our luck with our creations, and although no student was able to land a trout, several got a few nibbles and Katie Dihle even managed to hook one and bring it most of the way to shore. 9 PAGE 9 Scholastic Book Fair Our Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success. The Book Fair exceeded our expectations and raised over $800. We will use these funds to purchase new books for our Library. Thank you CLPMS parents. Therapy Dogs Media Center The Media Center is looking for Volunteers. Please Misha Bell at mbell@psdschools.org if you are interested. The Larimer Animal People-Partnership Therapy Dogs will visit Cache La Poudre Middle School on the third Wednesday of every month. Their first visit was Wednesday, October 19. They were enjoyed by all.
