Inside 2 Drama 3 Productions D 6 The PCC Mission Statement is students at Perry Central will adapt to an ever-changing world through high expectations and rigorous instruction in order to achieve college and career readiness and the skills necessary to succeed as productive citizens. Students Recognized PCC Sports The Anchor The Perry County Central Newsletter August 21, 2015 Principal s Blog As the proud Principal of Perry County Central High School, I am excited to welcome you to the school year. It is hard to believe that I joined the PCC family only one year ago. I have already created such fond memories and feel blessed by the warm welcome I continue to receive from our wonderful community. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve you another year as we work with our committed staff, students, and community members to ensure the continued excellence of our educational programming and to bring school culture and spirit to the next level at Perry County Central High School. At PCC we offer a unique and robust learning community with the rich academic and co-curricular opportunities of a comprehensive high school intertwined with the personal connections and community support of our local businesses. Our expert staff at Perry Central High School works tirelessly to build and sustain our school community which promotes personal connections, inquiry, agile minds, and determination. This is achieved through innovative instructional practices and programming that is student-centered, project based, relevant to student experiences, and applicable to the real world. I want to encourage each of you to think of your high school career as just that, a career. Utilize this opportunity to explore your options, build upon your talents, and gain experiences that will help shape your future successes and achievements. Challenge yourself as you progress and mature through high school to choose a rigorous program of study that will communicate your standards of excellence and dedication to post-secondary institutions and employers. Operate with the understanding that the standards we set for ourselves now shape the person we become. Our goal at PCC is to support each and every learner in our school to achieve their potential, master course content necessary to ensure post-secondary success, attain the skills necessary for college and career readiness, and feel deeply connected to and supported by their school and community. Working together we can attain this goal. I look forward to supporting each of you as you strive to attain your educational goals. This will prove to be yet another amazing year at Perry County Central High School. ONE TEAM...ONE DREAM!!
Senior Trip Seniors have voted on three different locations so far. Results have not been counted but we will share those as soon as we know. FBLA Any student that is currently enrolled in a business class (Southwood or Mr. Dixon's classes) is eligible to sign up to be members in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America. The dues are $10.00 and the deadline right now is set for Thursday, September 10th. You need to see Ms. Southwood in room 239 if you are interested in joining FBLA. You can also be eligible to join if you had a business class last year and are not currently enrolled in one right now. However, there are some travel restrictions with that type of membership. Robinson Scholar Over the summer one of our seniors, Bailey Campbell, participated in the Robinson Scholar Program. Bailey began the long process of applying for the Robinson Scholar Program her freshman year of High school, and her junior year; she found out that she was accepted. Bailey had to be involved in several community service projects to qualify for this program. She enjoyed her ten-day trip to the University of Kentucky. The program offers a full scholarship to the University of Kentucky. This program serves first generation high school and college students in twenty-nine Eastern Kentucky counties. The program s mission is to empower the students to complete a bachelorette degree at the University of Kentucky and provide pathways for them to contribute to their communities through active citizenship. This program is very selective and we know she benefited from this experience. GSP Program Over the Summer two of our PCC Seniors, Mahala Walker and Hannah Melton, attended the Governor Scholar Program, also known as GSP. The Governor's Scholars Program lasts five weeks during summer break and it strives to enhance Kentucky's next generation of civic and economic leaders. Established in 1983, the program provides academic and personal growth through the balance of a strong liberal arts program with a full cocurricular and residential life experience. Students must complete an application and compete with others from across the state. Those selected attend the program free of charge. Mahala and Hannah state that the program was a community of diverse people from all over Kentucky who joined together and worked as a group to become more successful in academics. Although the program was focused on academics, they also had fun and participated in extracurricular activities. Mahala attended the program in Murray State University in Murray, Ky. and Hannah attended the program in Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky. Both young ladies enjoyed themselves and appreciated the opportunity to gain valuable life lessons. 2

PCC Choir Perry County Central Choir will devote the first couple of weeks recruiting new members. The PCC Choir performed at numerous activities last year and attended several competitions. In 2014 to 2015 at KMEA, the PCC Choir was rated a Distinguished. The wonderful Director, Jackie Thompson will make sure to obtain the same level at the KMEA festival. Choir is not only about the competitions but is about strong bonds with each other. The PCC Choir plans to be very active in the community again this year, from singing at nursing homes and for veterans, to 9/11 ceremonies and Christmas concerts. You should try to come out and hear these wonderful voices. This group works very hard and is extremely dedicated Annual PCC Homecoming The Annual Commodore Homecoming will take place on Friday, September 11 th. We will begin the evening with our Annual Homecoming Parade at the Perry County Park at 4:45 p.m. Later that evening before the football game, we will introduce our 2015 Homecoming Court which will start about 6:30 p.m. Then we will end the night with Commodore football action as we take on Pike Central at 7:30 p.m. Come out and support all these events. 4
PCC JROTC Cadets Participate and Support the Cam Run On August 15, 2015 the Perry County Central JROTC participated in the Cam-Run for the Cameron Hoskins Scholarship. During this event there were two races that took place, the 5K (3.1 miles) and the 10K (6.2 miles). The Perry County Central Raiders led by our Battalion Commander Cadet Major Dakota Stidham did the 5k race with thirty pound ruck sacks strapped on their backs while running up and down rolling hills. SFC (R) Wilson and old MAJ (R) Cory ran with their rucks as well. Also, our S-4 Cadet First Lieutenant Timothy Mullins, working alongside our Cadet Command Sergeant Major Matt Asher, directed a handful of cadets to direct traffic and park cars. C/1LT Dylan Baker Cory Twins We would like to congratulate the Major Cory and Mrs. Cory on the addition to their family; the twins arrived this week: Nicholas at 6.5 lb. and Olivia at 4.25 lb 5
PCC Sports News PCC Summer Football Camp On August 1 st Perry Central s Football Team left for the school s first ever football camp. Most players had no idea what to expect with only vague warnings from their new coaching staff that this camp would be the decider of who was a football player and who wasn t. To many this camp seemed just that; a camp, but to the players who experienced it, it was much more than that. This camp forged a bond between the players that could only form in a game itself. After this camp the players didn t need to question each other s abilities nor their dedication to the team because you could see it on their faces. They knew who to trust in carrying on this team s name. Every day at 6:00 a.m., they woke up to their first of four practices that day. Each practice was there to push the limits of the players, physically and mentally, with each practice being around 2 hours each. When they weren t practicing, they were huddled at their cabins becoming closer together as a team and by the end of this camp; they felt more like family rather than teammates. Many people may not understand how or why they could endure such a mental and physical test but it is the love of the game and loyalty to their teammates. At times some didn t think they could withstand the challenge but encouragement from others gave them the spark to continue. With this kind of dedication from the players and coaching staff, they have already conquered one battle. The men looked ready during their pre-season scrimmage going into battle with two worthy opponents. They pulled out a win but also fell short on the other. The main thing is they played like a team and never gave up. The team will start their season at home tonight against Lynn Camp. Good luck. Come out and support our Commodores. PCC Soccer Kicks Off On August 15 th Perry County Central Men s Soccer Team beat South Laurel for the first time in school history. The final score was 3-2 with Zac Combs, Jacob Farris, and Travis Dunn with the goals. This was a great way for the team to start out their season. This was hopefully the first of many wins in the season. Their next game will be at home against Belfry at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday the 22 nd. Come out and support them. They work very hard. Soccer Success The PCC Women s Soccer Team is off to a great start with two wins coming from Sheldon Clark and Powell County. In the first game Whitley Gordon led the way with 3 goals while Vada Miller and Taylor Noble each had 1. In the next game Kelly Arredondo and Vada Miller led with 2 each while Keisha Couch only allowed 1 goal. This team will be in action at home tomorrow for the first time this season against Belfrey. Come out and support them on what we hope will be another win. PCC Cross Country The PCC Cross Country Team needs some runners. Anyone interested needs to see Mr. Dixon in room
Volleyball Opens The Perry County Central Volleyball team started their season off this week on Tuesday. They began with a home game against Prestonsburg and had an away game against Breathitt County on Thursday. The start to their season has been rough. However, they hope to pick it up this weekend as they participate in the Berea Lady Pirates Invitational. They are the defending champions of this tournament and hope to win again this year. The 4 Seniors are pictured and their leadership and experience will play a key role this year. PCC Cheerleaders Over the summer the Perry County Central Cheerleaders attended the UCA Ironman Camp at the University of Kentucky. They received the Superior Overall Award, 3 rd place in Cheer, and 3 rd place in Extreme Routine. 7
