1 November 2010 Liederkranz Life D a y t o n L i e d e r k r a n z - T u r n e r E a s t F i f t h S t r e e t, D a y t o n O h i o P r e s i d e n t s M e s s a g e October!!!! I can't believe it. The year is almost over. Where did it go? It seems like Oktoberfest was just yesterday. Oh, It was! It was a blast and a great success. The great hall was beautiful. Thanks to Inge and the decorating gang. Thanks to all those who put in long hours in the kitchen with Uli making Kohl, Rouladen, Schnitzel, potato salad, sauerkraut, and everything else that was most decidedly edible. Another thanks to Rick and his bar gang for the amazingly great tasting Bier and wines and the great service. Wunderbar! What's a meal without a little dessert? So thanks to all who baked and sold the delicious goodies. (I had a few too many.) You all made it a huge success! THANK YOU! You are all outstanding individuals and even better when you team up for the 'Kranz. A special thanks to all those who came and enjoyed the fun, food, festivities and the Gemütlichkeit. I hope that you all had as much fun as I did. Speaking of a team...team Duncan did a wonderful job on the Trachten sale this year. Many a cute Dirndl was sold as well as a few Lederhosen. U P C O M I N G E V E N T S 23 October Genealogy Group Meeting, 1:30 p.m. 24 October Fall Concert and Dinner, 3 p.m. 6 November Schlachtfest Dinner 19 November Bierfest 20 November Genealogy Group Meeting 4-5 December Christkindlmarkt 11 December Christmas Concert G e r m a n H e r i t a g e M o n t h Party on...the Fall Concert will be the 24th of October at 3 p.m. It's free, but the dinner isn't, and reservations are required. I'm in. Schlachtfest is November 6. If you like pork, this is the dinner for you. Don't miss it. Come on down to the Liederkranz. Dancing is on the second and fourth Monday at 7:30 p.m. and singing is on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Be there and celebrate your heritage. Lori F a l l C o n c e r t a n d D i n n e r Don t forget about our annual Fall Concert on Sunday, October 24, at 3 p.m. The choir has been hard at work preparing for a concert filled with many great selections, including several that are new to the choir repertoire. Come out and enjoy some beautiful music on a Sunday afternoon. And then give yourself a chance to meet up with old friends and maybe make some new ones at the dinner that will follow the concert. Uli has put together a delicious menu featuring Kasler Ripchen that will be sure to delight. Pre-paid reservations can be made with Heidi Gasper at through Thursday, October 21, Checks can be sent to the club at the address at the top of this page. Please note the reservation deadline date change from the flyer. See the flyer for addi tional details. See you at the show! Just a few days ago, October 3, Germany celebrated 20 years of unification with the former East Germany. Celebrations took place all day long throughout Germany. October 6, is German-American Day in the USA. Therefore, a suggestion: Our Fall Concert could be dedicated to this occasion. Something else I just learned: the piece of music by Beethoven, An die Freude or Hymn to Joy, is named the anthem for unified Europe. Mit freundlichem Sängergruß, Inge Longbrake M e m b e r o f t h e Y e a r We are now accepting nominations for the Outstanding Member of the Year award. See the details in the enclosed flyer for information regarding nominations.
2 S c h l a c h t f e s t Mmmmm...pig. I can already smell the roast pig, and that can only mean that our annual Schlachtfest is just around the corner!! This dinner is one of the premier events that the Liederkranz organizes each year. If you ve been to one before, you know how good it is. If you re a first-timer, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Either way, you don t want to miss out on a great evening! This year s Schlachtfest will take place on Saturday, November 6, in the Ratskeller. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and you have your choice of two menus, the regular or an upgrade to the mega meal that includes extra sausage for those who can t get enough pork! Hurry, though, because reservations are only being taken through October 29. Contact Trudy Campbell at to make your reservations. Additional details are included in the flyer. This is an event that you don t want to let pass you by! See you there! B i e r f e s t Come out on Friday, November 19, for our next Bierfest! This beer tasting party will be led by Liederkranz member Mike Schwartz, owner of Belmont Party Supply, and will feature ten hand-crafted winter brews. Whether an expert or a novice beer connoisseur, you will definitely enjoy this beer tasting experience. Mike has hand selected and researched these beers and will inform us of the details of each as we taste them. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the tasting will commence at 7. If you pre-register with John Koerner, you can enjoy a price discount. Check out the flyer for all of the important details. These highly popular tastings are a great way to meet and make friends while enjoying some unique beers at the same time! Come out and enjoy! O k t o b e r f e s t I think all who attended the Oktoberfest had a good time and enjoyed the band as well as the food and good company. Ida's cabbage roles were terrific, and Ida was assisted by Trudy Campbell, Betty Messmore and Margarethe Lewis in making the cabbage rolls. A special thanks goes to Tom Stahl for keeping our knives sharp and tenderizing the Schnitzels. I am sorry to say my signup sheet was destroyed during clean up but thanks to all the volunteers who made this Oktoberfest possible. Again, thanks to all who helped and all who came. Uli Gaertner T h a n k s G e n e a l o g y Page 2 On October 23, at 1:30 p.m., Mishelle Dicken of the Liederkranz-Turner will present "German Genealogical Research Within a Historical and Geographical Perspective" to the German Genealogy Group. Our November meeting will be held on the third Saturday, November 20, because of the Thanksgiving holiday. Diane Hooper, a genealogist with thirty years of experience will present "Germans in Poland". We have two exciting informative presentations coming up. Mark your calendars now. There will be no December meeting of our group. The first meeting of the new year will be January 22, All those who are interested in pursuing their German heritage by finding their German ancestors are welcome. Louise Gaertner uhglhp42@aol.com (937) J u g e n d c h o r N e w s Calling all youth from 8 to 18 years old! It s time to start up our youth choir, or Jugendchor! We will perform at the annual Christmas Concert on December 11, and the youth choir is a special and vital highlight of the evening that is always highly anticipated by all the concertgoers. We need you! Rehearsals will be November 4, 11, 18, and December 2 from 7:30-8:30 p.m., and December 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Liederkranz. The 2 nd is one we all hope for: Being over the hill is better than being under it! Deadline for the next newsletter: November 18 Brian Shaw cookiemon110@yahoo.com
