5 4-H SHOWCASE DESI THAYER Hi! My name is Desi Thayer, I am 12 years old. I am a member of the Providence Go-Getters 4-H Club in Storm Lake. My Mom and I recently went to a Community Education class where we learned this great new thing called felting! To be specific, we learned how to make a cobweb scarf using the wet felting technique. It was very easy and fun to do and at the end of the class, we had a beautiful scarf! There are 14 steps to making a cobweb scarf but they are all very simple. What you will need is bubble wrap that is 7 feet long by 14 inches wide, a small rolled tube of bubble wrap, a spray bottle with hot soapy water, several old towels, white vinegar, a large bowl and a variety of wool/silk roving. If desired, you can add sparkle fiber to give it added shine. After gathering your supplies, the first step is to lay your felt/silk/fiber out on the bubble wrap. need to be slowly stretched and formed until it is the desired shape. There will be some opening in the wool and this is why it is called a cobweb scarf. Once it is shaped, make the edges even. You can cut them straight or make different shaped tassels. Add sparkle fiber for extra color. It will Use the sprayer with hot soapy water to get the entire scarf wet. Once soaked, roll the scarf inside of the bubble wrap, bubble side down. This will cause water to leak out the sides and this is where you need the towels. Once rolled, apply pressure, rolling from fingertip to elbow 100 times. Unroll and carefully reroll starting at the other end. Repeat fingertip to elbow rolling 100 times, applying firm pressure. Unroll and use pinch test to make sure the fiber has felted together. This means that a pinch stays in the material when you pull it between your thumb and finger. If not felted, repeat the rolling. Once felted, remove the scarf from the bubble wrap and throw it on the counter. Use force and throw it 50 times. This helps close the pores of the fiber. It s also very fun! Next, soak scarf in a bowl of water and 1 tablespoon white vinegar for 5 minutes. This seals the pores. After 5 minutes, gently rinse scarf in cool clean water to remove residual soap/vinegar. Using towels, press water out of the scarf. Do not wring. Carefully lay scarf into desired shape. Dry on plastic hanger or drying rack. When dry, press and steam as needed. As needed, hand wash with Woolite. Purchasing the wool is kind of an investment and be sure not to buy Superwash Wool as it won t felt. This has been a really fun thing for my Mom and I to do together!
