SADDLE OAK CLUB COMMUNITY MANAGER S CORNER MARCH 2014 Come on Spring Time. Hopefully the cold winter days have passed by now and we can get out in the yard to trim out the dead debris and plant spring flowers. It is that time of year when you will see Brian (maintenance) out planting flowers, pressure washing, trimming, washing the fence lines, and killing weeds. Now is the time to beat the heat. Well the construction at the office is finally complete. It has been a long process but well worth the wait. Stop in and see what we have done and also take a good look maybe you can get some ideas to what you could do with your own home. NEW Stephanie Ray SEASONAL RESIDENTS For those residents that fly north in the spring, please remember to stop in the office and let us know that you are leaving. Fill out a House Check form for the Citizen Patrol before you leave. We will miss you, but this is not good bye it is see you soon. Be well and safe. What s New??? We are always working behind the scenes to make this community the best in Ocala. See some of the things we have been busy doing Remodeling the Office - complete Important Reminder, the Speed Limit is 15 mph in the community. I have seen several residents and their guest speeding out of the community. I sit in my office and watch as people speed out like it is a race to the finish line. I have had complaints about residents not stopping at stop signs and speeding on other streets as well. Please obey the speed limits, come to complete stops at the stop signs and watch for residents walking. Thank you!

Johnny Appleseed This month s cover features Johnny Appleseed, who is remembered on March 11 th. While many of us have probably grown up thinking this fabled character was a fictional childhood story, he was a real man with alert blue eyes, sandy hair, slender build and a colorful personality. His name was John Chapman, born in Leominster, Massachusetts in March of In reality, he was a careful, organized and intelligent orchard and nursery farmer. At the age of 18, he began to travel the unsettled lands on foot from Massachusetts to as far West as Ohio, and did indeed carry a leather bag filled with apple seeds. However, rather than scattering them, as he is so often depicted, he planted them in organized, fenced-in orchards and nurseries after he acquired the land. He would then move on, returning after the trees became established to tend, graft and harvest the apples, mend the fences, and then sell the trees and land to incoming settlements who would benefit from having a fruit orchard which would otherwise not have grown in that area. Many of these areas still exist to this day. He also had an elaborate system of burying his money along the waysides. He was a frugal man and, despite the money he made with this enterprise, did travel with no shoes, shabby clothes and meager provisions, as settlers and Indians always offered him accommodations, food, refuge, stories and friendship. And rumor has it that, for a time, he indeed did travel with a pot on his head to avoid having to carry it. After 50 years of walking the countryside, while visiting a friend in Indiana and, after a lifetime of never having ever been sick, died of pneumonia at the age of 71. In 1966, a US postage stamp was issued in his honor.

One cold day in February, I rode around the neighborhood and found no sign of Florida. I saw a dreary day in Kentucky, a mid-winter, snowless day in Ohio with no one about, the scant, brittle woods of New Hampshire. The sunset smelled of warm dinners from cozy homes, whose lights glowed with the aura of all that was within them. I saw an SOC winter with its own little polar vortexes, and one backyard boasted a lonely, solitary winter visitor. Articles typical of summer, spring and fall fun were left for now, until fresher and brighter thoughts decorate them as reward for their winter patience. Photos and article submitted by Paulette McNally. Thank you, SOC, for allowing me to shoot your stuff.

There were days when even the sun offered no warmth or glow, just a smile to assure us he was still in place in the sky, behind the fog, the drizzle and frost. Winter brings its own charms and purposes, and in SOC is nothing more than the memories of blizzards we left behind years ago. Here the deer hide in the calm of their own shadows, and spend the season among us where no harm can befall them. Safe beneath the ground that we no longer tend for now lie buds that wait and look for the long, sweet days of coming spring. Though the winter is keen and chill the hearts of roses we ve already planted are beating still and all their bloomings will come true.

Toots Lobe organized this 5-day trip to Key West. Next planned trip is to Biloxi, Mississippi in March, and another for October to Myrtle Beach. Come to the Saturday morning Social to see the beautiful disc of over 300 photos. Photos courtesy of Rick Ida, article by Paulette McNally

On behalf of a grateful nation, the staff and volunteers of Hospice of Marion County and the Hospice Veterans Partnership of Florida pay special tribute on February 3, 2014 to Eugene L. Heintz for Dedicated Military Service to America and for Advancing the Hope of Freedom and Liberty for All No serviceman was ever honored for what they received. Honor has always been the reward for the sacrifices they have made.

When I must leave you for a little while, Please, shed no wild tears to make your days harder Don t hug your sorrow through the coming years, Rather start the day with light thoughts of me, And for my sake and in my name Live on and do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness with empty days, But fill each one in useful ways Which during my life I may have kept you from. Reach out your hand to friends in greeting That is where you will find me That is how I send you comfort, hold you near; For I will wait for you, no matter how long To once again share all that was us Through the eternity which has been promised us.
