September 2018 On behalf of the President, Rick Smith, and the rest of the Management Board I would like to wish all members good successful bowling for the upcoming 2018/19 season. A lot of work has gone into planning for this season already and I congratulate both the Bowls Committee and Management Board for their efforts so far. My best wishes to the newly appointed selectors as well. One man that has done a lot of work is Barry Charity. He has done a lot of signage work and other projects around the club: the scoreboards and the carpark are examples of his terrific work; as is the strengthening of the poles that assist disabled bowlers to get on and off the green. On behalf of all members, I would like to thank you Barry. Much appreciated. We have recently received a grant from the Dept. of Recreation & Sport for the club to purchase a cardiac defibrillator which we will be purchasing and setting up within the next fortnight. Hopefully we won t need it but it s there for everyone s safety. Our very successful Night Owls program starts October 10 th so if you know someone who would enjoy a night of good social bowling, get them involved. And finally, a note for your diaries; the Clearview Xmas Dinner is on the evening of December 8 th. Good Bowling. Ian Bailey CEO Page 1
Another year has passed us by, and we have a new committee for the forthcoming season of 18/19. I wish them well and have so far noticed that they are very committed to their roles. Peter Bishop... Chair Natalie Kiss... Deputy Chair David Armstrong... Secretary David Reid... Director of Selectors Renzo Pellegrini... Director of Tournaments Jim Gartner... Committee Kevin Atkinson... Committee The winter bowls season is having good support from many players and the weather, so far, has not had a big impact. "Discussion Day" was attended by 50 members and the committee outlined it's plans for the season, mainly selection system and selectors, and club tournaments. Go Pre-season trial game dates have been decided and are as follows: Sat. games Sept. 15 th & Sept. 22 th Wed. games Sept. 26th & Oct. 3 rd All trial games to be played in full club uniforms. It is very pleasing to note that some ladies from Croydon BC are joining us to play on Thursdays, we now have sufficient numbers to complete the team. We welcome Croydon ladies and wish them well. I urge all members to keep their eyes on the notice board for changes and up coming events etc. Enjoy what is left of the winter tournaments etc and good luck with season 18/19 pennant season and good health to all. 3 At our Discussion Day some weeks ago, the question was raised as to what coaching was going to be offered to members this season. The short answer to that, is simply all and anything that the members will support. At this stage your club coaches are open to any ideas ranging from opening up Friday night as the clubs main and official practice night where we all will be available to help you with your game. We are and always have been available for individual sessions. You just need to ask. At present I am putting toge -ther a book of practice type skill based exercises for you try at your leisure. That should be available soon. If anybody has any ideas about what or how they want their coaching sessions please feel free to contact me. At present Leon & I are coaching kids from Prescott & Roma Mitchell schools. An enjoyable time for me as mostly the kids are keen to have a go. I would like to thank the members who are helping out with the large group we have from Roma Mitchell on Friday afternoons. David Bailey Head Coach Page 3

Jack Paton Jack Jack is one of our Nonagenarian of the Club. He was born in Bannockburn in Scotland on the December 17 th His family moved to Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire when Jack was 3 years old. He left school at 14 years and became a grocer, then in 1945 when he was 18, Jack joined the Royal Navy and served for 2 years on a minesweeper in the English Channel and North Sea. After leaving the Navy he worked as a Salesman with Hoover. In 1947 while at the local dance Jack met his wife Stella McKillop and were married in April Their son Neil was born in August 1959 and then daughter Stella born in October In this time he worked as a store-man in a Distillery that made yeast. Looking for a better life for his family they decided to emigrate to Australia and in January 1965 they sailed out of London via the Suez Canal and Colombo, Sri Lanka to Wollongong, Australia. Jack was sponsored by BHP Wollongong and worked in the steelworks there. After about 9 months, in October 1965, the Paton s decided to move to Adelaide. They set off with their car and trailer with no job and no place to live, finally settling in a rental house in Croydon. After renting for 10 months they were able to buy a house in Ingle Farm in 1966, where they stayed for 41 years until December 2007 when Jack and Stella moved to their current house at Oakden. Jack started working in John Martins as a salesman in November 1966 and was there until they closed their doors in Soloman s Carpets was Jacks next employer before moving onto Malcolm Reid s carpet department for 2 years until they closed their doors. In 1981 at the age of 55 Jack joined the Abattoirs Bowling Club and bowled there until its closure in He then joined Clearview Bowling Club where he is still putting down his trusted bowls. At the age of nearly 91 and after 37 years bowling Jack is still enjoying the Challenge of Bowling. Jack has a collection of trophies that he has won while playing for both Clubs. Last season he Skippered in 4 Central Red on Wednesday who took out the Pennant. Jack is known for his Skipper s hand signals and still has the ability to trundle through the head causing mass destruction. We wish Jack many more years of Bowling. Diana Harder Page 5
Welcome everyone to the 2018/19 season. As this is my first newsletter report, I will try and make it short. Let me start by saying that you all should be proud to represent Clearview Bowling Club. Let s try hard to make your club a very successful club in the upcoming season as I know you will. Time To Change: This year I want you to all know that sometimes not every bowler brings their best game every week. It is our responsibility to make sure these bowlers still feel part of the team. A kind word of friendly encouragement, a smile or just a pat on the back can go a long way towards lifting their spirits. Sometimes people are quick to criticize or complain: Not This Season. A great many people have put in the hard yards to make sure we are ready to go. We should all be grateful to our committee members and those people behind the scenes. These people should not be taken for granted. A very special thanks to Ian & David Bailey, and my mentor Peter Bishop for passing on their knowledge and guidance that helped me transition into my position. Good luck everyone this season. David Reid Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many. Page 6

I went across the road, to Enfield Cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. Whilst there I witnessed four grave diggers walking about with a coffin. Three hours later they were still walking about with it. I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!! To The Members for Thursday s Pennants players there is a MEET N GREET the Croydon Players on Thursday September 13 th 10.00am A rollup of Bowls, then a Morning tea. Page 8
Nothing but the Truth A lawyer, who had a wife and 12 children, needed to move because his rental agreement was terminated by the owner, who wanted to reoccupy the home. But he was having a lot of difficulty finding a new house. When he said he had 12 children, no one would rent a home to him because they felt that the children would destroy the place. He couldn't say he had no children, because he couldn't lie (as we all know, lawyers cannot, and do not lie). So, he sent his wife for a walk to the cemetery with 11 of their kids. He took the remaining one with him to see rental homes with the real estate agent. He loved one of the homes, and the price was right. The agent asked, "How many children do you have?" He answered: "Twelve." The agent asked, "Where are the others?" The lawyer, with his best courtroom sad look, answered, "They're in the cemetery with their mother." MORAL: It's not necessary to lie; one only has to choose the right words, and don't forget, most politicians are lawyers. Farewell to Kelvin Raethel A touching farewell presentation to Kelvin who has been selling raffle tickets on Saturdays. He became a Club Legend over the last 15 years and was well known by our member plus the oppositions. He was a very dedicated man who use to use two buses to get to the Club. Kelvin always gave a smile and enjoyed a chat. The CEO Ian presented Kelvin with a small gift on behalf of the Club for a job well done. Please keep Kelvin in your thoughts as he battles his road before him. Well done Kelvin. Page 9
No new rules or rule changes at this stage have come to light for the 2018/19 Season as yet. There has been a change on becoming an umpire. Umpires need to complete the Measurers course before they sit the Umpires Course. A couple of rules players need to understand Bowlers of side not in charge of the head must stand behind the head and to one side (if possible) or on the bank. A Toucher is to be marked as soon as it comes to rest and before the next bowls is delivered. Always remember when playing Pennants if you are not sure of a decision call an Umpire. 11 It has been a busy time on the Greens the last few months. Having A & B Greens scarified and sand added to them has seen both greens come up to a better pace. Lining the ditches with synthetic turf has been a huge plus for the Greens staff. Many THANKS to Darren, Diana, Brayden F. for the hours put in to achieve this result. The lines on A Green will have been refreshed by the time this newsletter is produced. Hopefully this amount of work and money will silence the knockers and they look at their bowling ability instead of blaming the greens. We are not strict on DUMPING on our Greens but dumping damages our greens as much as any greens so I believe Dumpers should look at their deliveries to prevent damage. Thank you to the Bev & John Cushion for maintaining the flowers and shrubs to keep our excellent complex to its high standard. A BIG THANK you to Neville Owen for his services as a Member of the Grounds staff. Neville handed-in his rake in May. Leon Harder Page 11
