The Inspectin cmmittee has final say n swrds permitted fr use in the cmpetitin. Unifrm All cntestants must wear a full length traditinal hakama (pants), bi (belt) and d-gi (unifrm tp). Lud fancy clred unifrms will nt be allwed. Traditinal tabi (sandals) are permitted during cmpetitin. Cntestants may als cmpete barefted while in the cmpetitin area. Sandals r shes are nt allwed in the cmpetitin area but are recmmended utside f it. The Judges panel has final say n what is apprpriate dress. Etiquette This is a Japanese style turnament. Prper etiquette in keeping with Japanese swrd arts will be bserved by all cntestants bth inside the cmpetitin area and utside. Cmpetitrs shuld never apprach the judges table. A liaisn will be available. Respect and curtesy fr ther cntestants will be shwn at all times. Disrespect t the Judges r ther cmpetitr will result in immediate disqualificatin frm the turnament. All cntestants will refrain frm lud talking r ther actins that result in distracting behavir fr ther cntestants. Purpsely distracting ther cntestants at any time will result in immediate disqualificatin. Prper etiquette and handling f swrds will be shwn at all times. Imprper care and handling f ne s swrd will result in immediate disqualificatin. Cntestants will nly wear their swrds in preparatin fr their turn at cmpetitin and while in the cmpetitin area. 4 Events and Divisins Cntestants may enter a tugher divisin. If there are less than 5 cmpetitrs, divisins may be cmbined. The divisins belw are the basic divisins actual divisins during cmpetitin may vary due t the number f cmpetitrs. Iaid: Divisin I: Less than 2 years training Divisin II: 2-4 years f training Divisin III: Mre than 4 years f training Batt H: Divisin I: Less than 2 years training Divisin II: 2-4 years f training Divisin III: Mre than 4 years f training Turnament Frmat The turnament frmat will be single eliminatin. Iaid cntestants must d at least 1 kata frm seiza. Eliminatin frmat: The eliminatin frmat cnsists f tw cntestants paired fr an eliminatin rund. Each cntestant will demnstrate 3 kata, at the same time, with a winner declared by the judging panel. The winner cntinues n fr the subsequent runds until there are nly 4 remaining cntestants. Any lss in any rund results in eliminatin frm the turnament, except fr the semi finals. The lsers in the semifinal will be paired t determine 3rd place. The winners will be in the final fr 1st and 2nd place. Individual Cmpetitin Rules Cntestants will be paired up fr eliminatin runds by the judging panel and called up when it is their turn t cmpete. Bth cntestants will apprach the cmpetitin area with their swrd already wrn in their bi (belt). Bth cntestants will stp at the back line f the cmpetitin area and bw first t the judges, then t each ther. Bth cntestants will enter the cmpetitin area and perfrm three kata. Each cntestant will perfrm the required sequence f cuts based n their divisin. Shdan/Nidan Rkudangiri fr all runds Sandan and abve Rkudangiri fr all runds except the finals. Final rund is 1 mat free frm. When finished with their sequence, each cntestant must perfrm nt t mark the end f their rund. Each cntestant will bw again and exit the cmpetitin area t wait the judges decisin. Bth cntestants will bw first t the judges after their final decisin, then t each ther and exit the cmpetitin area. Team Cmpetitin Rules Teams will cmpete in the same frmat as individual cmpetitin. Each team will be paired up against anther team fr eliminatin runds by the judging panel. The required cutting sequence is Rkudan-giri fr all teams and fr all runds. Teams will alternate, ne member at a time, in perfrming tw cuts per team member: First team will send their first member t perfrm the first tw cuts f Rkudan-giri Then the secnd team will send their first member and s n. Judging Criteria bth Individual and Team The criteria fr judging is based n three elements: technique, timing, and spirit. Technique Technique is primarily based n successfully perfrming the required sequence f cuts based n the cntestant s divisin. Failure t perfrm all the required cuts in that sequence may result in lss fr that rund. The judges decisin is als based n the precisin f each cut. Hw clse are the kesa/kiri-age cuts t a 45-degree angle. Hw clse are the yk cuts t hrizntal. 7 Timing The judges will be watching fr a flw t the cuts in the required sequence. Hw natural is the timing during the cutting sequence. Are there excessive pauses between each f the cuts. Is the timing t unifrm/fixed between each f the cuts. Spirit The judges will be expecting prper attitude, fcus, and prjectin f spirit in keeping with the ideals embdied in Japanese swrdsmanship. Lapses r breaks in spirit will effect scring (especially fr missed cuts). Des the cntestant exhibit dignity, respect, and sincerity befre, during, and after the required cutting(nt shwing ff, mre than mere technical ability ). Cmpetitin Area and Targets The cmpetitin area will be as shwn in the diagram belw. Cntestants will be paired fr eliminatins and will cut ne at a time in frnt f a panel f 3 judges. Target stands are prvided fr the cmpetitin and will be a unifrm 30 in height. Targets will cnsist f ne tatami mte mat, rlled, banded, saked, and then drained fr prper cnsistency. Targets will be spiked t the stand using a ¾ diameter sft wd dwel. Targets will be set up and cleaned up by the cmpetitin vlunteers cntestants are nt t tuch r adjust targets r stands at any time. 9 Required Cutting Sequences Shdan t Nidan will perfrm a 6 cut sequence, rkudan-giri, fr all runds. Rkudan giri can start frm migi (right) r hidari (left). Sandan and abve will perfrm a 6 cut sequence, rkudan-giri, fr all eliminatin runds. Rkudan-giri can start frm migi(right) r hidari (left). Final runds fr Sandan and abve fr 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places will be a free sequence n ne target: any cuts, any sequence. Judging fr the final runds are based n difficulty f cuts and number f cuts but still include the criteria fr technique, timing, and spirit as detailed abve.
