1 May 5 Cinco De Mayo May 13 Mother s Day May Newsletter 2018 May 19 Armed Forces Day May 28 Memorial Day REGENCY STAFF Chris Blackerby, Executive Director Ebony Clark, Director of Nursing Karmen Jones, Reflections Unit Coordinator Laura Dooley, Business Manager Austin Connor, Director of Dietary Chris Goodwin, Maintenance Director Lisa Tinney, Community Consultant Debbie Jenkins, Activity Director Assisted Living Nurses Station Hello Residents, I hope everyone is looking forward to a busy month. We have so much going on, but here are a few highlights to be aware of and mark on your calendar. First, we will be going on a tour of Regions Park, home of the Birmingham Barons, on May 3rd. This should be a lot of fun. Also, our Resident Theme Dinner for the month honors the mothers among us and is scheduled for May 9th. We will have special entertainment just for YOU! We will go fishing at Oak Mountain State Park on May 17th, so join us even if you don t like to fish. Lastly, we will be going to Peach Park on May 30th for lunch, ice cream, and fun. Hope you have a great month. Chris Blackerby, Executive Director Regency Retirement Village of Birmingham
2 Recent Events Celebrating Jack Hoffman A special thank you goes out to everyone who made Jack s celebration such a fun time! Jack was recognized for his accomplishments on World Down Syndrome Day. Mrs. Hoffman shared pictures and stories about Jack that were priceless. After looking at all the pictures, one can deduce... Jack knows most celebrities and has traveled the United States doing just about everything! Jack, you are a star and we love you! Hyundai Plant Tour We have been to Vance to see the Mercedes, Lincoln for the Hondas, and now Montgomery to check out the Hyundais. Each plant was unique, but the Hyundai plant tour was taken by way of tram. We made our way through various stages of production of the Sonata, Elantra, and Santa Fe. The two million square-foot manufacturing plant resides on 1,744 acres of land and includes a stamping facility, paint shop, vehicle assembly shop, a two-mile test track, and an engine shop. Most impressive was the showroom s sleek, black Genesis sedan. It could be yours for a cool $73,000! That is more than Mr. Williams first house! 1 May 2018 Newsletter
3 Easter Egg Hunt Each year the space between Somerset and Berkshire becomes an Easter egg playground. This year was no exception! Sixty-six day school children from across the parking lot at Homewood Church of Christ came ready with their Easter baskets! It is not really a hunt! Six hundred and sixty eggs in that little space looks more like an Easter egg explosion! What counts the most is that the children had a great time finding the eggs! Thank you to all the residents and staff who helped stuff candy in the eggs! International Breakfast Our themed meal for April was International Breakfast. As usual, Austin and his team provided a buffet that was second to none. ANYBODY can have just scrambled eggs and bacon! But how about: Eggs Benedict, Cheese Blintzes, Classic Chipped Beef on Toast (SOS for the Veterans), French Toast topped with Bananas Foster, Cinnamon Rolls, Cheese Danishes, THEN you had fresh fruit, hashbrowns, bacon/sausage, grits and biscuits! Keep in mind if you do not eat in Somerset, you might not get all that is on the menu. So come on out for fun, food, and fellowship with your friends! The themed meal for May will be Mother s Day. 4 Upcoming Events Barons Park Tour May 3rd at 12:15 pm In April of 2013, the Birmingham Barons played their first game in their new ballpark, Regions Field. The state-ofthe-art, 8,500 seat facility replaced Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, the home of the Barons since A 360-degree concourse allows fans to see the action on the field as they move throughout the ballpark. On June 13th, Regency will watch the Barons take on Chattanooga, BUT, before we do, come out and tour the park with us. You must sign up. We leave at 12:15 pm. Strawberry Picking May 7th at 10:00 am We are off to pick strawberries at the Marsh Farm in Locust Fork! DID YOU KNOW: they are a member of the rose family, and there are about 200 seeds on each strawberry. You pick up to a gallon of strawberries and Regency will pay! Then, down the hatch! Please sign up! The bus will depart at 10:00 am. A picnic lunch will be provided Fishing At Oak Mountain Park May 17th at 9:00 am Grab your hat and let s go fishin! It s always a good time. Debbie provides the fishing gear, and don t worry about putting a worm on your hook. We fish with WHOLE KERNAL CORN! Yep, that s right! After we catch all the fish, Regency will buy your lunch at McDonald s. Don t wait to sign up, the trip always fills up. Hop on the bus at 9:00 am. 3 May 2018 Newsletter
5 Holocaust Education Center May 18th The Holocaust began in 1933 when Hitler came to power and ended in It is believed that 11 million people died during that time. Six million of those were Jews. The center is sending either a local survivor or a second generation speaker for us to hear. Everyone is invited to Berkshire. The time will be announced later. Butterfly Memory Release May 24th at 2:00 pm Please join us for our 4th annual Butterfly Memory Release. It s a time to remember those residents who have passed away in the last year. Everyone will receive a live butterfly in an envelope to release. We will meet under the gazebo at 2:00 pm. A special thank you to Comfort Care for providing the butterflies. Memorial Day Celebration May 25th Memorial Day is when we remember those who have died in the Armed Forces while serving our country. The celebration will include entertainment and refreshments. If you have a loved who we can honor, please bring his/her picture to share. ALL GAVE SOME, SOME GAVE ALL! 2:00 Somerset 3:00 Berkshire Peach Park Here We Come May 30th at 10:00 am Peach pie! No problem; other food items are available. Lunch is on you. The bus will fill-up so you MUST sign up! Bus leaves at 10:00 am. Save The Date Guided Relaxation with Kathy on Tuesdays, May 8th & 22nd at 10:00 am in the Community Room. We had a great turnout last month for this new program! 6 Community Spotlight Mary Gill Mary grew up in a little community called College Hills. That area is now known as Birmingham Southern. Mary went to college and graduated with a degree in education. She taught elementary and high school. Mary enjoys dancing, walking outside during spring and autumn, and being around children. When asked what her favorite food is, Mary said, anything green! Mary shares her apartment with her fur-baby, Amy. Mary, we are glad you call Regency home! May Fun Facts Armed Forces Day was created to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. More phone calls are made on Mother s Day than any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent. The American incarnation of Mother s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.
