1 Friday 3 February 2017 DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR OE DRAMA STUDENTS Tallulah Haddon (photo left) and Joe Quinn both studied drama at Emanuel Joe Quinn (who left Emanuel in summer 2012) is currently appearing in Wish List at the Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square, a run which finishes on 11 February. The play has received critical acclaim, with Paul Taylor writing in The Independent that Erin Doherty is tremendously moving as Tamsin pale, bone-weary, sometimes exasperated to tears by her brother, but always able to muster a fragile, reassuring optimism for his sake. She and Joseph Quinn create a completely convincing sense of sibling intimacy, with its own quiet survival strategies (the gentle high fives, say, with which they give each other strength). Dean never feels remotely like a case study in Quinn's meticulous, dignified portrayal of the character's routines for calming his intolerable degree of anxiety. Paul Taylor has awarded the play four stars, along with Roger Foss of The Stage, who says The acting is exceptional: Joseph Quinn is utterly devastating as Dean. We are also looking forward to seeing Joe in the role of Kroner in series 7 of Game of Thrones, due for broadcast on Sky in mid Tallulah Haddon is currently appearing in the new TV series Taboo, which premiered on 7 January. This is an eight part series, set in 1814, begins with James Delaney (Tom Hardy) returning to Britain after 12 years in Africa to set about reclaiming his inheritance. Tallulah appears in six of the eight episodes in the role of Pearl. Tallulah also studied drama at Emanuel and left the school in the summer of She has just been given the lead role in a six-part series for E4 and Netflix, written and produced by the same team as the well-known teen drama Skins. MHB PETER HAIN VISIT The Politics Society talk by Lord Hain about The future of Socialism has moved to Tuesday 21 March (from Tuesday 7 March). The move is due to a debate in the House of Lords on 7 March about triggering Britain s exit from the EU. The talk will take place in the Library at 4pm. All welcome. MHB

2 2 CHINESE NEW YEAR On Tuesday we celebrated Chinese New Year with a fabulous Chinese lunch. The menu consisted of a delicious chicken and noodle soup, followed by tender beef in oyster sauce, colourful and tasty chicken Chow Mein and a vegetarian mushroom and quorn stir fry. We served a variety of dim sum on the salad bar. For dessert there was a toffee apple sponge, exotic fruit salad which included the strange looking dragon fruit as well as lychees to which people could help themselves. The food looked and tasted amazing and, with the addition of prawn crackers and fortune cookies, we had a truly authentic Chinese festival for everyone to enjoy. The refectory and buttery were a riot of colour with the Chinese flags, bunting, flying dragons and Chinese lanterns which all added to the festive occasion. Celebrating Chinese New Year has become an annual event and I know it is one that is very popular with pupils and staff alike, as well as with the catering staff, who really enter into the festive spirit with their bright red shirts and cheerful smiles.we are already planning our next special day which will have a Tex-Mex theme, as we celebrate Texas Independence Day on Thursday 2 March. 3 3 THE PRODUCERS Last Sunday saw the first full run through of this year s musical, Mel Brooks The Producers. While it was a rather stressful experience for some of the staff involved, and there is clearly much of polishing of routines and numbers to be done, the show is in great shape. The full cast and crew were in hysterics as Ben Margolis stole every scene he appeared in, though he faces some stiff competition from Nic Pauwels and Sam Campbell-Boross. Tickets are selling very quickly, and with six weeks still to go, the Saturday night is almost sold out, so please book early to avoid disappointment. RJA STAR PERFORMERS Josh, Hermione and Robert (pictured) are all performing in the Orchestral and Choral Concert on Thursday 9 February at 7pm in the Hampden Hall. All three are performing in their last big orchestral and choral concert at Emanuel before embarking on exciting ventures at University, Music or Drama College next year. In the concert, Josh will be performing Grondahl s Trombone Concerto, whilst Hermione and Robert will be singing as two of the soloists in Bach s epic Mass in B Minor. For tickets to the concert, please contact Lucy Stevens on lucy.stevens@ emanuel.org.uk. TWR BURNS NIGHT & CEILIDH The second annual EPA Burns Night and Ceilidh in Hampden Hall was attended by over 90 people last Friday. Guests took to the dance floor for an evening of whirling, twirling and foot-stomping fun. The Ceilidh Factor band provided the excellent music, calling out the steps as the dancers flew about the room, many of them in their tartan finery. A piper accompanied the haggis as it was ceremonially carried into the Hall. Phyllis Street (Emanuel Catering Manager) read out Address to a Haggis by Robert Burns. The Haggis was toasted with a tot of whisky: Great chieftan o the puddin-race! The catering team provided a delicious Scottish meal in the that included the haggis, neeps & tatties, stovies and two types of traditional desert, which was served up the while the piper played on. With smiles on their faces, the dancers headed back to Hampden Hall for the final hour of dancing. There was a raffle at the end of the evening, with Mr Keddie winning a case of beer from the Wimbledon Brewery. The band then played their final number, Auld Lang Syne, as everyone joined hands and sang along. The evening was the perfect cheery antidote to grey mid-winter - we hope you join us next year. 4 4 VISIONARY GEOGRAPHERS In the Geography Department we have been trialling our brand new Google Cardboard headsets. In today s lesson I used them to show Year 9 pupils different biomes and ecosystems around the world, even delving underwater to see sea-lions swimming around the Galapagos Islands (which is what they are looking at in the pictures). The headsets are also going to be used with Year 12 to show them glacial and periglacial environments and also to analyse urban regeneration in UK cities. They are simple to use and can be applied to almost any Geography lesson to help pupils visualise what they are learning about in a more exciting and hands on way. JRR PARENTS PRAYER GROUP Prayer and reflection is an important part of life at Emanuel, not only for the pupils but for all members of the community. A group of parents has expressed interest in establishing an informal prayer group which will meet in the school chapel on a monthly basis (first Thursday of the month in term time) to offer prayers. They pray: for the needs of the school that are known to them in response to prayer requests coming from members of the school community and also in response to prayers and requests that the pupils, staff and parents have placed in the prayer box just outside the chapel. Whilst prayer is the focus of this group, it also allows space and an opportunity to develop supportive and friendly relationships across the school community. The prayer group welcomes all parents and is open to anyone at any time. If you would like to come along please just show up. For more information please contact the chaplain on forbes.walker@emanuel.org. uk. RFW The dates of the meetings (school chapel 8.30am am) are: Thursday 2 March, Thursday 4 May & Thursday 6 July. SCIENCE LIVE CHEMISTRY TRIP BY TALIA On Tuesday (31 January) Lower Sixth Chemists attended a Science Live event in Euston with Miss Jordon. We saw some of the UK s leading chemists gave lectures from their areas of expertise. They ranged from talks on why carbon is a very versatile element to live demonstrations of dry ice (frozen CO2) exploding inside a water bottle. We also heard exam tips and tricks for next year. Dr Jamie Gallagher spoke about where chemistry and physics overlap, discussing how kinetic energy from humans can be used to charge phones. Dr Peter Wothers discussed Spectroscopy, how light interacts with matter. Dr Philip Ball talked about the wonders of water and Dr Andrea Sella on Strange Ice. Finally, Dr Suze Kundu discussed organic chemistry from an inorganic point of view with her talk on how carbon is taking over the world. The event was an interesting combination of the sciences and a revealing exploration into chemistry s real life application from real life scientists. WORK EXPERIENCE A reminder to Year 11 pupils that the deadline (Friday 10 March) is fast approaching. Please complete the pupil placement form (available from the parent portal) and return to Miss Malik ASAP. If you have any questions please see Ms Zaratiegui or Miss Malik immediately. HHM CONFIRMATION 2017 The chaplain will be offering preparation classes for any student thinking about confirmation (Church of England). The enquirers group will begin meeting before February half term and the confirmation service itself is likely to be in June The confirmation group classes are informative, informal and enjoyable and there is no obligation to proceed with confirmation at the end of the series of meetings. Anyone interested in confirmation should contact the chaplain as soon as possible, either directly or by on forbes.walker@emanuel.org.uk. Parents should also feel free to contact the chaplain on behalf of their son or daughter or indeed with any questions about confirmation or the preparation process. RFW

5 5 SPORT U16 NATIONALS-REGIONAL ROUND THIRD PLACE The U16 squad travelled to Redbridge for the National Schools Competition (Regional Round). After a good warm up the girls were ready for some tough opposition. Unfortunately, in the first match, they didn t realise how tough! The first match was against a physical Godolphin and Latymer side (we lost 2-10). Next was Tonbridge, who were able to break down our style of play. We couldn t find our rhythm and they beat us Tonbridge went unbeaten all day so the score was respectable. After a team talk - the girls knew that they were not playing well - we went into our next game with a positive mind set. They team regrouped and were ready for Sevenoaks. I could clearly see the change on court - the team was moving and passing much more confidently. The girls kept their heads in a close game and came through as winners (7-6). This gave them a needed confidence boost for the next match against St Pauls (won 8-3). They had got their spark back! I was able to make changes with no impact on the team or its performance. This really showed the strength and depth of the squad. With three matches left I gave them the target of winning at least two games. The girls rose to the challenge beating The Coopers Company and Coborn School 8-6 and Harris Academy 7-1. They had a tough match against Coloma, who came second overall, losing I would like to congratulate the girls. They showed real spirit after losing their opening games to come back positively to secure third place. It s worth remembering that this in one of the strongest netball regions in the country. Thank you to all parents who travelled to East London to give their support. CY U15A: INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS NATIONAL CUP PLATE QUARTER FINAL V REDMAIDS SCHOOL FINAL SCORE: (LOST) BY INDIA The team worked hard from the first quarter with some excellent defence and attack. In the first quarter Poppy Sendell worked hard to bring the ball down the court to our shooters. Unfortunately, Redmaids took a two goal lead. We came back strong in the second half with some excellent defence from Katie at WD, Jay at GD and Maisie at GK. However, we still trailed In the third quarter, thanks to some amazing shooting from Grace and Maddie, we managed to bring the score up to The team gave their all in the final quarter levelling the score with five minutes to go. Tash was excellent at WA, bringing the ball down to our shooters. Katy played great at WD, slowing Redmaids down. Unfortunately, the opposition scored at the final whistle to win Despite losing the girls played courageously and everyone did a great job to make it such an exciting and close match.

6 6 RUGBY U12A V ST JAMES S FINAL SCORE: 45-5 (WON) BY TOM After a long journey on the coach, the Emanuel boys proceeded to warm up. The referee blew his whistle and the match was under way. It was a very strong start from Emanuel as they had scored a try in the first couple of minutes. After that try the boys were running away with it already scoring another five tries making the score at half time The next half began with a shaky start from Emanuel but we were still in control. Another 15 minutes and we had scored another three tries. Towards the end of the match there was some high pressure from St James s and it showed as they scored a good try that they deserved. But the match was already won with the end score of There was some stand out performances from Hal, Tom, Martin, Thomas, Mathew and Max with excellent rucking from Ben and then some amazing carries by Louis, Zeeshan, Nick, Jack and Jack. An outstanding performance. There is also a special mention for Isaac for scoring a try on his A team debut and Ben who put in his best performance for the A team. U12B V ST JAMES FINAL SCORE: (WON) BY CALLUM The first half was dull and very back and forth. We weren t rucking low enough and as a result we were constantly losing the rucks. Our tackling was also a bit off but we still managed to grab a couple of tries. We struggled to keep the lead though out the first half. The second half was better. Henry came to score two good tries and change the game. This gave us better confidence which lead us to a few more tries. Jamie, Donald, Timur, Tom and Aron all scored tries. U12 C V ST JAMES S FINAL SCORE: (WON) BY ETHAN We started well, applying pressure to the opposition and scoring early tries and pushing through their good tackling. We made good choices and decision throughout the match. We used our offloads well and kept the match at a quick pace. The power from Oscar pushed through their defence scoring multiple tries. At half time, to make the match more interesting, we mixed the teams around. All of St James try scorers were from Emanuel but we did play some better rugby in the second half. Conor scored three tries for St James and one valuable one for us. U12A V CITY OF LONDON FREEMEN S FINAL SCORE: 40-5 (WON) BY JACOB We got off to a flying start, scoring in the first few minutes despite being turned over a few times. We then scored more tries with some great individual finishes from Matt, Martin, Thomas and Hal. At half time we were ahead 35-0 and we had negated the threat of them turning the ball over. In the second half they were a different team, they were much more aggressive and they scored a well-deserved try. We defended well and there was some good defence from Nick, Andrew and Tom. We managed to score in the second half, it was created by a good run from Martin and he offloaded it to Max who finished it off. Overall, we played ok and there is room for improvement in the coming matches. EMANUEL U12 B/C/D V CITY OF LONDON FREEMEN S FINAL SCORE: (WON) BY ETHAN They started off by applying pressure on us at the start but things changed quickly as Tom found the gap after the ruck as he countered attacked quickly. They then bounced back scoring another two tries in quick succession. But as we have been all season long we came back hard to finish the first half 3-2. We came out all guns blazing again in the second half with some good creativity from Ollie and passing it to the winger Oliver who scored multiple tries. Luke powered through their defence several times as well as tackling very well. Our attack in this game was exceptional and our defence was great apart from a few high tackles. We made excellent choices in the match for example twice we kicked it up field when under pressure and almost scored. This was the best rugby match I have ever been a part of. SWIMMING V IBSTOCK PLACE The team s (consisting of U12, U13 and U14 students) first gala of the year was a huge success. Both schools fielded strong teams and were evenly matched despite the event not being formally scored. There were some notable performances from Kiera and Ben. Kiera swam the U13 girls 50m Backstroke in a time of seconds. Ben swam the U14 boys 100m IM in a time of The U12 and U13 girls relay teams also recorded excellent times in their relay events. BEN ROGERS - SWIMMING COACH ROWING Emanuel fielded seven boats in the Quintin Eight s Head. Against some strong opposition in both boys and girls events, the results at first glance were disappointing. On closer reflection they show that we are in the mix at all levels, with plenty of work to do over the coming weeks. With four of the top boys unavailable and half the crew returning to rowing after the rugby term, it is fair to say that expectations for the senior boys eight was modest. The competition from Westminster, St Paul s, Radley and Dulwich meant that the first race of the season was like a Conference football team finding itself in the Premier League! It was no surprise to find us coming tenth place out of 11. The Year 10 girls and boys fielded two eights each and both squads were competing for the first time in sweep boats (one oar per person). All crews put in solid performances against tough competition, with the J15 Boys A boat finishing tenth out of 18. The girls look forward to building on their performances at the Hampton Head this weekend. DMC
