Date: Pg. 1 Contents Presidents Report 1-3 Other News Coaches 9 Match Reports Southport Sharks JAFC News Presidents Report Overall, last weekend was fantastic for footy, with the exception of the Under 12 Div 2 side that had a bye, the rest of our teams got out on the paddock after a long pre-season and played some footy under beautiful skies. The girls started the week last Wednesday night with some terrific footy right from the first bounce and our Under 18 Girls side won their first ever match! Good stuff girls. On Saturday we completed the last of our shirt presentations with the Super 6 s and now the whole Club (410+ of us) are out there each and every week. The results in the competitive age groups were mixed with some wins and losses but all were played in good spirits. See match reports at the end for full details. I was please to receive an over the weekend from the President of the Broadbeach Junior Football Club complementing our U16 Div 1 side for the way they showed respect for Broadbeach s new changerooms and had them spotless after they left the grounds on Friday night. Thankyou to the players and officials involved with this team, it s always pleasing to receive this sort of feedback from other Clubs. Now you ve set the standard for the rest of the season and it is up to all of our teams to follow your example at home and when playing away. Well done. Round 3 Our Girls sides are back at home again this Wednesday, so boys, if you re training at home that night stick around and cheer our girls on. Thursday is ANZAC Day (so no school) which means you can stay longer and support our teams. The U8 s are back on Friday night again (due to oval space restrictions). And our U13 Div 1 side is also playing on Friday night at Surfers Paradise. The rest of our teams are playing across the Gold Coast (and Northern NSW) on Saturday. We only have two home games (U11 White & U12 Div2) plus the Super 6 s at the Sharks on Saturday. This is followed by our Senior Club matches in the local derby against Labrador. (Some of our U8 s will also be lucky enough to play a half time game during our Senior match on Saturday night). Under 11 Silver has a bye this week and our U13 Div2 drew the short straw this week and are travelling to Palm Beach for an 8am start on Sunday. The rest are as per the fixture below. NB. All U14 Div 1 matches on the Gold Coast this weekend are being played at Pac Pines as part of the selection process for the U14 Stingrays side. Main Oval Closure - To all players and parents please be aware that the Main Oval is currently closed for training and games until 25 th April. This is because the main oval is being resown with winter grass so that it stays green all season and it will need time for the seed to germinate and establish its root system before we can use it again. Also as a reminder, the goal areas on the main oval are not to be used for goal kicking practice at any time. This is a heavy use area and we are trying to protect the surface so that it lasts all year long. If you want to practice goal kicking please use the bottom oval goal posts. Coaches are reminded that no training drills are to occur in the corridor from point post to point post for the entire length of the main oval.

Date: Pg. 4 Southport Sharks JAFC News ANZAC Day Thursday 25 April 2013 ANZAC Day is the solemn day of remembrance of those Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who fought and died at Gallipoli in It is also a day of remembrance for all soldiers who died while fighting for their country. It is celebrated on 25 April each year, regard less of on which day it falls. The Australian Imperial Force (AIF) was formed in It was an all-volunteer expeditionary force that first served in the south-west Pacific and New Guinea, seizing German outposts. In November 1914, the AIF departed from Western Australia for Egypt to head off the Ottoman forces. To support forces at the Western Front, the Allied forces needed to open a supply route to Russia and the key land platform they could use was the Gallipoli Peninsula. The British and French made attempts during February and March using battleships. Despite some success, mines and torpedoes damaged several ships. On 25 April 1915, the combined Australian and New Zealand Army Corps joined the Allied Forces on the Gallipoli Peninsula for a catastrophic battle that lasted until January Of the more than 130,000 casualties during the Gallipoli Campaign, 8,709 were Australian and 2,721 were New Zealanders. Over 25,000 returned as wounded to the two countries. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

Date: Pg. 10 Match Reports - Round 1 Under 15 s & Under 18 s Girls With resounding success, our u15 and u18 girls teams took to a soggy bottom oval for the first time this season last Wednesday. We are very close now to our target of forty registered girls which is something this whole club can be very proud of. I just can t mention all names any more.. there are too many of you but everyone conducted themselves brilliantly, all girls are a huge asset to our great club. Fourteen of our u15 unit were playing for the first time against a seasoned Carrara outfit. This was pretty much the same Carrara group that knocked us off in last year s grand final. Nevertheless, our young girls took things right up to the bigger bodied and older Saints, going down by just fifteen points and leaving them a little worried about being swallowed up by the Southport Juggernaut in the season ahead. Great games from all our girls, very proud of everyone but particular mentions must go to Lucciana for her crunching tackles, Sara Fraser for a ripping first game, Jess Hill for a great game in the centre, Kalinda for her clever reading of the play, Dee Heslop for a cameo in the middle, Jasmine for her courage and Brittany for a terrific first game. Big thanks to all the parents and helpers, especially Scotty, Kelly and Melissa. Must mention the El Presidente too.. he ran around like a mad man all night to help with everything from socks to sirens. If you want to see our young girls strut their stuff be there this Wednesday at 6.00pm when we tackle Broadbeach. Final scores, Southport to Carrara Jasmine Branoltte is this week s profiled player. Jazzy has played just four games of Australian Rules Footy. Her favourite player is Bonnie Pearson and when she gets older Jazzy wants to be a sports star (you re already a sports star Jasmine!!) Jasmine is good at passing, has a pet called Odour, loves hot dogs and thinks Sammy Phillips rolling through puddles is the funniest thing she has seen at footy. Jazzy loves tackling, has a big engine and heaps of personality. Welcome to our club Jasmine! Our older girls rolled around in the u18 competition and weren t they on song! Led by Gemma Turnley our girls dominated the night running out comfortable winners, Southport to Carrara The scoreboard probably flattered the Carrara girls we were too fast, too strong and too spirited on the night. Great back up efforts from Mikayla, Kindy, Sara, Hope and Jess. A wonderful game from Gemma, brave from Kelsey, rocking effort from Rachel, awesome return from Kirsten and an amusing moment at the end of the game, with the ball in the hands of our Grade Six trooper Darcy who ran onto the ground when I wasn t looking after one of our girls came off injured! Great first up hit out ladies, you showed composure and intelligence in a physical contest. Kaitlyn Jack is our profiled u18 er this week. Kaitlyn has now played about forty games of Australian Football. She barracks for Carlton (poor thing), is nicknamed KJ and her favourite player is the little maestro Gary Ablett Jnr. Kaitlyn wants to be a Sports Scientist, plays footy because she is a boss at

Date: Pg. 11 Match Reports - Round 1 it, goes to CAC, has a pet called Roxy and loves Sushi. Kaitlyn thinks it was funny when she head clashed with Mira, wants to improve her marking and is a tackling machine. Well done Kaitlyn, you are a champion! Get on board the Girls Footy juggernaut we re leading the charge at Southport Sharks. Shark On ladies!! Coach - Mick Ogier Team Manager - Kellie Fennell Assistant Coach - Scott Pearson Under 8 Green It was a great morning down at Southport Sharks for the second round of our mighty under 8 s. The green team was set to take on the tough opponents in the under 8s purple. The boys started off a little slow with the other team getting off to a flyer. After half time we started to pick it up, our backline were playing in front, our mids were winning the ball and kicking long to our forwards who were kicking bags of goals! It was good for us coaches to see a competitive game and to see the boys having loads of fun. Thanks to all the parents that helped out! See everyone at training on Tuesday! Coach - Billy Marshall Assistant Coach - Mick Travers & Hayden Shaw What a beautiful Saturday morning for our Round 2 game! All of our U8 Blue boys turned up at the Sharks charged & ready to take on the Silver team. It was the first game for new Sharks player, Jayden and didn t he start the year off well! Campbell was his usual energetic self with lots of fist pumping when our boys kicked a goal. Zade & Lachie were on fire with plenty of accurate kicks. Bailey & Deegan showed us that our handballing drills are paying off with some great examples of sharing the ball between players. Under 8 Blue Kinser, our little pocket rocket, was scurrying around the field gaining possessions like a wild man!! A great game Kinser!

Date: Pg. 12 Man of the Match this week went to Xavier who had more possessions than we could count! The McDonalds encouragement award went to Joseph who entertained us with his on field moves and some very long kicks! A great game by all of the boys. Thanks to the mums for the fruit to feed my starving players...boy can they eat!! See you all at training! Coach - Jonny Spencer Team Manager - Melissa Spencer Under 8 Red Round two saw the Reds up against Coach Corey s Yellow team. After a terrific performance last week our boys were keen to get out on the park and get amongst it. New inclusions to our team Daniel and Jamie were warmly welcomed by the boys and they both put in solid performances. Jaden again played a terrific game and when not kicking outstanding goals he was setting up team mates with precision passes. Liam and Jack continue to show improvement from last year and are picking up possessions with ease. Angus and Zack were handy contributors throughout the game and have shown strong commitment to win the ball. Amongst our goal kickers this week were Jack, Zach, Jaden and James. In what was a closely fought match, the coaches were most impressed with the boys ability to work together and to follow our team instructions. Our players of the week awards for outstanding games went to both James Carrigan and Nicholas Rozario. An extra special mention must also go to Jackson Trinder who played a great game for the Yellow team who were a player short this week. Keep up the good work Boys! Coach - Hayden Ewens Assistant Coach - Dale Paulden No Report Submitted Coach - Terry Johnson Team Manager - Andrew Gapes Under 8 White

Date: Pg. 13 Silver v Blue. Under 8 Silver With no training because of a storm through the week the full team hasn t yet been together until today, the blue boys were off to a good start with a couple of quick goals, we had Jonathan Underwood, Zachary De Simone and Thomas Robertson in for their first games and all performed well, now we have our team almost complete- big jack English still not back from Injury. Both teams had their share of the ball in what finished an even contest, Harry Sullivan ( Sulli) played with an injured left hand and still put in, Billy Brenac, Nayte Gregory and Harry Staunton- McCallum showing if you want the ball you have to get in and get it. Our standouts were Oscar wood and Nikolas Pregun, both plucking some great marks, it was pleasing to hear in the last quarter the calling for the ball from both teams, it really does work, good work boys this made for some good flowing footy, Well Done Jonny and the blue team, thanks for a great game and we look forward to playing you again, as for our boys, well done and see you on Tuesday for skills and drill at training. Pete McCallum (Coach) Owen Gregory (Assistant Coach) Michelle Staunton (Manager) No Report Submitted Coach - Brad Page Under 8 Purple Under 8 Black What a great game we played. All Sharks Black players played our match with lots of energy and enthusiasm. Everybody was on time and almost all players arrived with their water bottles. After we put on our jerseys we separated into our sections and played like a real team. I heard lots of calling for the ball and saw all players kicking and hand balling the Sherrin to their new teammates. All 10 players were present, lots of excited chatter was heard and many goals were kicked. Instructions to the team included: listen to the umpires whistle, always reply to the umpire with 'yes sir' and try to handball and kick to your teammates before just blazing away. Player of the week: Jensen Hinz. Player of the match: Samuel. Training is on Tuesday at 4.30pm - please be on time and stress to your great young footballers that trying to learn a few names each week will make for a better experience for all.

Date: Pg. 14 Hopefully Jason our regular coach is feeling better soon and thanks to Michelle for managing all the extras required to ensure a smooth game day. Are any of the parents willing to assist with oranges for the half time break and jersey washing? If we all pitch in it will make for a more successful season. Coach for the Day - Mick Travers Coach - Jason Swanson Under 8 s Yellow Week 2 saw team Yellow come up against the Red team. The 3 main things of focus for team Yellow before the game were, 1. No diving on the ball 2. Share the ball with your team mates & 3. Have fun.. The boys in Yellow completed all their task successfully. After a slow start in the 1 st quarter, with all credit to the Red team the boys show they can play very well as a team. With Phoenix taking a running bounce and passing to Callum for our 1 st goal was just the kick start team Yellow needed. With some great defensive work by Max & Jamie in the 2 nd quarter we were able to rebound the ball into our centres and then some excellent work to finish off with some goals in our forward line with some great team play. The 3 rd quarter the Red team came out firing and kicked a couple of early goals but with some great passing in the backline from Phoenix, Tristan & Jackson to get the ball further afield to Beau, Zhaie & Ethan we were able to kick a few goals of our own. In the last quarter the whole team worked excellent together, kicking to each other and handballing to someone in a better position to kick, team Yellow looked like they had been playing together for 2 years not 2 weeks. With some great work from Beau, Zhaie & Ethan down back and with Jamie being an excellent target up forward along with Max & Callum, it made it very easy for Phoenix, Jackson & Tristan finished off the game really well. Awards this week. The Macca s award went to Ethan for his excellent work in defence and the Mini Golf award went to Jamie for his excellent team work See you all Tuesday, Coach - Corey Gillie Assistant Coach - Karl Howard & Zanda Haw

Date: Pg. 15 Under 9 s White Well done Boys. What a great start to our first Game. After all being disappointed not being able to play last week the boys all made up for the lost game today with them all turning up on time bouncing with enthusiasm & the want to get out there & play Footy. For the first game all the boys surprised me as straight of the bat they looked out for each other & played like a real team. We started of the Game today with Lachlan being our team captain today winning the coin toss & toping it of by standing out as one of our best players out there today. Well done Lachlan. Alongside him starting off in the forward line today was Cody, Alex & Ethan with Cody & Alex also getting the awards for standing out today amongst a team that all played well. Starting off in the Centre today we had Callum, Aiden, Seth, Leo & Marcus. These boys all got along really well & looked like they had been playing together for some time with them all looking out for each other by getting in to space when our side had the ball. Starting off in the back line today we had Jed, Alastair, John, Sam & Adam. These boys all went in really hard today always keeping their eyes on the ball with some great marks & good long kicks. For our first game I feel we had a hard experienced team to play against & as it was the boys first game together as a team they all need to feel proud of each other as I am. They all played great & did the club proud in how they really had the want to play & how they looked out for each other. As the coach I feel really proud of our team & in a short time we will have a real little team that will be unstoppable. A special thanks today to Olivia for bringing the oranges, Matt for looking after the arm bands & getting the kids in to their zones & Brad for doing the goals. Thanks also to Olivia, Matt & Blair for picking the awards for the day as well as the kids really did Love it. Well done boys with the Sharks song at the end as you all sung it really well & made us parent s really proud to be there watching you all. See you all at training this week. Coach - Tim Catanese Team Manager - Scott Niess Under 9 s Black What a difference a week makes no rain and beautiful sunshine. Our first game of the season and what a start! This week the Under 9 Black travelled to Pac Pines to play against Pac Power. Unfortunately Benji was unable to play but we welcome him back next week. From the start our centres moved the ball well into the forwards allowing them to kick a few early goals. The backline played great defensive football moving the ball up to help the centres drive forward. This spirit continued for the whole game. I was so proud to watch the team come together today and play as a team, backing each other up and congratulating each other. Well done boys.

Date: Pg. 16 The player awards for this week s game was a very hard decision with so many champions to choose from. Player of the match went to Lucas Mann and player of the week to William Graham. A special thanks to all of the parents for their support and cheering. It was great to see everybody supporting from the side lines and offering to help. Coach - Glenn Palmer Team Manager - Rachel Palmer Coach - Ben Fisher Team Manager - Troy Gay Under 10 s White Under 10 Silver Saturday 20 April 2013 Southport Sharks vs Pac Pines Power Under 10 s Silver The sun was shining for the Sharks on Saturday morning at Pac Pines and it was great to finally kick off our season. 16 boys showed up all keen to finally have a game. Nic was Captain for the day and led from the front out of the centre. Our focus for the game was Teamwork and Fair Play. Right from the first ball-up the boys did exactly this and it seemed from the way they played as if they already had a few games under their belt for the season. Rhys was the first to get a goal with a lovely mark and perfectly executed kick and was consistently good throughout the game showing some silky skills. In defense Bryson took some terrific marks and showed great determination to attack the ball. Ryan and Luke had both not been well through the week but battled on every time the ball came into their zone. We had practiced through the week to run more than 5 steps before bouncing and this paid off. George had some great runs and bounces and picked up a couple of goals for his efforts.

Date: Pg. 17 True to Jaspers style he was like a pinball on taking possession spinning and bouncing off his opponents to break away and clear the ball. Cade had a great game early on but unfortunately had to leave at half time for Rugby commitments. This meant that Pac Power was one man up on the field and also had more fresh legs with their extra rotations. However this didn t deter the Sharks boys. Taj and Antonio stepped it up a notch in the centre battling hard to win the ball. Tyson was well focused and constantly running into space providing options for his team mates with Anthony, Ben and Julian being just a slippery and elusive. It was also great to see Kayden enjoy the competition. This lad always listens and has a smile on his face and seems to soak up the fun of the game. Man of the match award today went to Cooper who listened to instructions and followed them. He called for the ball loudly so his teammates were sure of his intentions, looked for options when kicking and did not panic when he had possession he waited for his opponent to release before disposing of the ball effectively. Every player deserved an award for the way they conducted themselves today. There was no disputing the umpires decision and they played clean and fair with a sharp focus on winning the ball. Even the Pac Pines Coach and assistants complimented the team for the spirit in which they played. So a BIG well-done Boys, lets keep it up. Player of the week award was given to Nic Rumbles who is a great example to his teammates with his efforts at training and on the field. Coach - Tim Presser Team Manager - Leanne Presser Coach - Wayne Riddle Assistant Coach - Jonny Spencer Team Manager - Bernadette Williams Under 11 s White Under 11 s Silver First game of the season after a long preseason and the boys were ready to go. We hit the ground running in the first quarter with Riley winning in the ruck and Ky, Liam and Daniel taking the ball away from the centre square using their pace and skill. Luke and Matt were presenting well in the forward line and we dominated the first quarter with Palmy not scoring. We won the first quarter because our attack on the ball was hungrier than the opposition. The second quarter was a different story as Palmy came out hard and started to win their own ball putting our back man under pressure however the defence was holding up as Hugh, Harrison and Hunter showed that they wouldn t take a backward step. They tackled ferociously and made the opposition earn every kick and kept us in the contest well done boys.

Date: Pg. 18 Billy, Jack and Dale worked hard throughout the game and showed that they could play in a few different positions which is great to see. Hugh continued to battle on in his first game of AFL and I was very impressed by his determination and highlighted this at halftime. Jacob, Connor and Ethan tried hard all game and Declan continues to improve and set up a nice goal in the third quarter. Oscar was involved in some good handballing and it was great to see some of the drills in the preseason had paid off when the boys linked many times throughout the game. Overall boys it was good first up effort boys but we have a few areas to keep working on. We must man up in defence, not crowd the forward line and move the ball on quickly when we have taken a mark or receive a free kick. Goal kickers- Luke 2, Riley 1 and Liam 1 Best Players Hugh, Ky, Hunter, Riley and Daniel Coach - Dean Johnson Team Manager - Brian Gorman BYE Coach - Rob Gerlinger Team Manager - Kellie Thompson Under 12 s Div 2 Southport v Labrador Under 12 Div 1 Under 12 s Div 1 After 4months of hard work, training and preparation we finally got to take the field for our first game against Labrador. We were all very nervous while being excited about how we would perform in our first competitive game for premiership points. The boys arrived in their black track pants and kit bags, and immediately showed how professional and organised we are as representatives of the Sharks. After a walk of the oval to take in the size of the ground, we got ready to take on the Tigers. The game started at a rapid pace and Labrador led the way winning the contested ball and putting our backline under enormous pressure. We were getting beaten in most aspects of the game during the first half. Our boys were all struggling to cope with the amount of running required, especially given the warm conditions. We lost 2 boys with injury during the first half, which meant for limited rotations. Many of the players were in desperate need of a rest, but had to remain on the ground. We battled on and managed to stay in the game. A good half time rest and positional changes allowed us to start to dominate during periods of the 3 rd quarter. At 3 quarter time we had only managed 3 scoring shots and were in desperate need of

Date: Pg. 19 some scores. After an early goal to Labrador in the 4 th quarter, the boys rallied and started to dominate the game all over the ground. We were peppering the goals but kicked 6 points and still trailed into the last minute of the game. Finally a great mark and kick for goal and we hit the front with only seconds to spare. The final siren was a very satisfying moment for all players as we had never been in front all game. The boys never gave up and celebrated a fantastic win. Our key stat indicators were: Tackles 44 Play On From Marks & Free Kicks 28 Bumps/Shepherds 37 Uncontested Marks For The Opposition 37 (we must work on this ) Well done on a fantastic team effort that you should all be very proud of. Now we know what it takes, we can improve each week and develop into a very good team. Final Scores: Southport 4.7.=31 defeated Labrador 4.2.=26 Goal Kickers Joel Faulkner 1, Riley Coombes 1, Ayden Punter 1, James Nicholls 1. Best Players Matt Fraser, Tysen Gregory, Ayden Punter, Jaidyn Seymour, James Nicholls, Mitch Freeman Coach - Gavin Faulkner Team Manager - Lincoln Coombes Assistant Coach - Andrew Punter The first hit out of the season is always a test. In almost perfect conditions the Div2 boys did us proud against Broadbeach coming away with a well fought win. Broadbeach played a style where they had a lot of boys around the ball. To our boys credit they were hard at the ball with an honest effort given around the packs while others provided the opportunities when the ball was free. The boys definitely played better footy when they were able to get the ball out enabling free flowing run into space. Under 13 s Div 2 To the boys credit our last quarter was their best, especially the ball movement.

Date: Pg. 20 The boys were able to get the ball free from packs congested with Broadbeach boys and work through our runners to get the ball forward. There were times where we cleared the ball from the centre into attack without the opposition touching the ball. This year promises so much for all involved and while the Div 2 group is a young group, the prospect of seeing their skills develop and backing each other on the footy field is very exciting. As a group, coaches and support group, we are again feeling our way at the beginning of a new season but are sure as the season evolves we will develop into a very competitive football team. Finally it s always great to see so many parents there at the game supporting the boys. The boys and I look forward to your support during the season. Coach - Andrew Lovis Team Manager - Bronwyn Allard Assistant Coach - Zoran Durdev Under 13 s Div 1 Finally we were able to get a start to the season and we were up against the Broadbeach Cats who we knew would come out hard. The boys got off to a slow start with Broady applying plenty of pressure at the contest and running hard when they won possession. Our boys had made a commitment to each other to work hard, however, the first 3 quarters it appeared we were not willing to do that. The boys fought to stay in the contest for the first three quarters before applying all the structures and disciplines that they have set themselves. The last quarter saw the boys run hard, tackle hard, play on at every opportunity and work hard for each other. With the ball being won out of the middle the boys were able to run over the top of the Cats for a good in. The most pleasing part about this game is that when challenged at 3/4 time, the boys rose to it and lifted. A good solid win that gets the season off to a good start...and we all know what a good start makes for.

Date: Pg. 21 Remember boys, hard work beats skill, when skill doesn't work hard. Southport Broadbeach Best - Lachie McDonald, Jake Harrison, Terry Gloucomis, Chistian Robba-Colley, Nathan White Coach - Lynton Bradbury Team Manager - Mark White Assistant Coach - Gary Curtiss Under 14 s Div 2 Sharks def Broadbeach The season started out in great form for us with a resounding 15 goal win against Broadbeach Cats. With Eight players backing up from the Under 14 Div 1 team and a further 5 boys also coming up from the Under 13 Div 2 team, we patched together a team which we believed would be competitive. What an understatement. The boys came together in a rather rushed way with the Div 1 lads finishing their game, changing guernseys and running straight back out for our game. Thanks to Jimmy and Kim Waugh for warming up the boys for us and having them ready to go for our game. From the opening bounce we could see the benefit of 6 weeks intense skill based training. The addition of Game sense training drills really got the kids up and going early and they easily adapted to the pace of the game. The backline of Ben, Connor Colemore, Shaun Marshall, Tyson and Baylee stood firm and Broady s score was a testament to their dedication to the task. Special mention to our newest member of the team Cohen, who never having played AFL before, played HBF and was always looking to get involved and pulled off some fantastic handballs out of the pack and pushed to get to the second contest. Our Midfield of Jezza, Liam and Ryan were busy all day and created a defensive wall which Broady could not crack. Quinny, Dec and Arden combined effortlessly on the Half Forward line to effect multiple scoring opportunities. The forward structure was rounded off perfectly with Both Kero and Chandler getting involved every time the ball squeezed through Lance s Big Mitts, which was very rare. Having coached Lance for the last two years, I have never seen him so dominant in the air. He seemed to have the ball on a string, which resulted in him kicking 7 goals 5 points. The onballers of Zac, Shifty and Connor Mac were full of run and gave their opponents a lesson in how to run, kick and push to that next contest. Shifty was on fire with a haul of 3 goals 2 points, but it was his efforts to push back and help our defenders which was most pleasing. Tom, Will and Dakota chimed in off the bench and provided enthusiasm and endeavour at the football. Big credit to the coaching staff from the Under 13 s who judging by the talent of the boys who played up, are doing a fantastic job in preparing the boys to play up.

Date: Pg. 22 Special mention to Tom Kelly who had a cracker of a game and adjusted to the bigger bodies with ease. Well boys, Great start to the year, lets all get to training and work on the things which will make us stronger and more adaptable for the year to come. Major scorers- Lance Underwood 7-5 Liam Shiffaeur 3-2 Ryan Mattner 2-1 Coach - Travis Kerrigan Team Manager - Mark Feltell Under 14 s Div 1 What a perfect day to play football - the sun was shining and the Broadbeach ground was in perfect condition. The boys were very keen for their first game of the year and we were all excited to see if the hard work during preseason was going to pay off. Before the game we spoke about winning your contest and beating your opponent to the ball, tackling hard and low and at the stoppages feeding the ball out the back to give our team mates time to make a good decision. The boys warmed up well and were lead out by Ant who was captain for the day. It was soon evident we were playing a depleted Broadbeach outfit as the boys dominated the first half with Cooper, Ant and Max rotating through the middle and Jasper and Tommy winning the ruck contests with ease. Shano, Josh W, the Connors and Baylee were not letting any ball get past their defensive cage and were clearing it out to our hard running half backs and wingers in Shifty, BJ and The Zaks. Jasper, Liam and Big Josh were intimidating the opposition with their tackling pressure and general presence around the ball unfortunately the umpires were very strict on the sling rule which we will have to adjust to if this interpretation continues in future games. Lance was presenting well and Matty was roving nicely along with the rotating on ballers in the forward line and they were all peppering the goals with little reward. At half time the score was to no score - you may notice the 15pts!!! It was obvious that this was the main focus at half time. We spoke about three areas to improve - keeping the forward line clear and moving so that our forwards can lead into more dangerous areas - to give the ball to a player in a better position to kick the goal rather than just having a ping yourself - and to show some poise and square your body to your intended target. some boys around into different positions during the last half to improve our flexibility for the future and give them an opportunity to develop further.

Date: Pg. 23 The boys took that on board and with Jordy and Mitch leading hard out of the half forward line and Jack using some creative handball the forward line really started to function better. We also threw What was really encouraging was the amount of times the ball came out the back from a contest or stoppage to a player who had time to deliver to a target. We still need to continue to work on this and to create more run from a defensive line and to reward that runner. The boys sung the song with great gusto and it was pleasure to see them get around our injured team mate Jarrod and the smiles on their faces - awesome team work boys. The final scores SP BB Goals; Lance 3.4, Matty 1.5, Coop 1.1, Shano 1, Josh M 1, Zak Y 1 My BOG - Shifty (Liam Schiffauer) - for a great all round game, he pushed hard into defence when they had the ball and spread into dangerous positions when we had it and showed poise and hit his targets when he had the ball - well done Shifty. Best players: Coop, Ant, Lance, Zac Y, Liam, Jasper, Josh W, Shano We have some awards that have been kindly donated by Mcdonalds, NoodleBox and Mario's Thanks Again to all the assistance from the coaching/support group and all the parents who put their hand up each week to help out. Without you the boys cannot enjoy this great game. Coach - Jim Sandral Team Manager - Kim Waugh Assistant Coach - David Djurovitch & Dean Johnson & Nick Johnson Under 16 s Div 2 If we learn anything from this week it is that we must play 4 quarters of footy. When you give any team a 5 goal start, it is hard, hard work to get back into the game. By half time we had done this, only 1 goal down going into the second half. We lost Deano to another head knock, and try as we might, just could get our noses in front, getting as close as a kick in the last quarter. I think we saw their size and freaked a little. The problem with that is that size and height does not equal skill and heart. Our backline was superb in dealing with the amount of ball coming down in the first quarter and repelled numerous waves. Through the game, we started to get our run going, started to share the ball and move it quickly into space. Our skill level cost us a couple of goals our way and missed targets had the ball rocket down the other end for a goal their way.

Date: Pg. 24 Mark Reynolds absolutely demolished his opponent, as did Josh Dickinson, and Luke De Boer in the ruck. Matty Lockhart made a number of brilliant tackles, smashing in hard. Noah Lind started down back, ended up crisscrossing centre half forward and spent some time in the ruck as well. Hayden Correa backed up from Div 1, spent time as an onballer, and when he ran out of puff, became a full forward and micked 2 in the last quarter. Zac Symons was courageous and dangerous up forward, kicking 2 as well. Fish played his best half in a couple of years, and Macca was Macca, skilful and classy. Jack gets better very game, and Toothy and Lachie Kerr keep finding space and hitting targets. WE had good efforts from every player at times during the match but it takes 4 full quarters of hard work to win games. 4 quarters where we do the team things, team efforts, the 1 % ers that win matches. Let us get EVERYONE to training and do the hard yards to get the rewards. Nothing in life comes easy fellas and if we want the victories, we need to sweat. Thanks to all our parentals and helpers. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Harry for coming down although injured and being our runner. Best Players: Mark, Josh, Matt Lockhart, Correa, Lind. Zac, Luke, Macca, Toothy Goals : Correa 2. Zac 2, Kai Pearce 1, Tim Cahill 1, Lachie Kerr 1, Aaron Leedham 1 Coach - Darren Gardyne Team Manager - Kim Pregun Assistant Coach - Robbie Jones Under 16 s Div 1 After a win last week that became null and void due to the weather, we came into the match against Broadbeach who are last years premiers, primed and ready. We then promptly received a fairly decent reality check on the standard we need to reach to be competitive. At times it seemed like we were being played with. We can take this 2 ways., either curl up into a ball and wish it never happened or remember everything that happened and learn as much as we can from it and take ourselves up to and beyond their level. The best thing about a smack like this is that we have had this happen to us at the beginning of the year. We can now focus on our deficiencies. Things like taking our opponent away from the contest to free up a team mate, the unrewarded running, to push hard to get to the next contest and impact on it and to be FIRST to the footy, and BASIC skill errors. 6 goals came from our mistakes, dropped chest marks, missing targets by hand and foot that we could get away with in previous years but not in Under 16 s. We were second to the footy from the opening bounce, pushed off it easily, while they seemed to be composed over the footy, we were rushed and hustled. We lost Ben Presser with a busted collarbone (8 weeks) in the first quarter and seemed to swimming uphill. I don t doubt that the boys tried hard,

Date: Pg. 25 but we were reacting to the play, not making it. We pushed forward really well, but watched them run past us going the other way. In the second half, we took it right back to basics and had the boys just focus on their individual opponent, making them be accountable. We at least made it a contest and even won the last quarter. We only had a few players win their position on the night and a few boys break even. Let s get everyone to training and knuckle down now. Let s do the hard yards and re-focus for next week where we will be missing our rep players. The rewards will come if we do the work. Thank you to everyone for coming down and supporting and to our parents who volunteer each week. Robbie and Andrew. Best Players : Hugo Bartlett, Val Beynon, Mike Balanda, Jordan Lowe, Hayden Correa Coach - Robbie Jones Team Manager - Chris Harris Assistant Coach - Andrew Lowe Trainer - Ken Mathews
