Your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors are our best asset! Starting this month, they can join on the offseason membership. They would just pick up paying dues on a month to month basis from now until the end of March. This is an opportunity to try out the club and see if they enjoy it. We offer this during a traditionally slower time of year as an opportunity to showcase our warm and inviting membership, activities and facilities. After months of conversation we were able to secure our new Executive Chef, Daniel Shramek. Daniel comes to us highly recommended and his 25 years in the industry brings a wealth of experience. His background covers multiple concepts to include work at Erling Jensen s, Kitchen Manager at Huey s, Executive Sous Chef at Ridgeway Country Club, Executive Chef at Memphis National, and Executive Chef at Jim s Place Grille here in Collierville. He has made his presence felt immediately with the additions of Daily Sandwich Specials, new Gluten-Free items and new specials on the Catfish Buffet. He has been tweaking our menus for the upcoming events including the Fall Festival, Pasta Night, Sunday Brunch, and Club Champions Dinner. Make it a point to stop out and shake his hand and give him a big Windyke welcome as he will play a big part in our continued success moving forward. ~ Steven Ash, Food and Beverage Director SHOP CLOSES Daniel Shramek
2 Member Courtesy Here are a few friendly reminders of how we can keep our courses in top shape: keep carts on the path when you are within 20 yards of tees and greens! Most of you do a great job, but always be aware to: rake the bunkers, fix your ball marks, keep sunflower seeds and cigars off greens and drive carts where they should be driven. Thank you for respecting your golf facilities! We are all golfers and we are in this together. Windyke is your club and we want and need your input to keep making things better. Ladies Windyke Golf Our Windyke ladies had a great showing in the Memphis Area Women s Golf Association tournament that took place recently at Colonial CC. Here are our Windyke members who placed: Championship Flight Lauren McAfee - 1st Place Ginny Zanca - 2nd Place (WLGA) 2nd Flight Vickie Smith - 1st Place (WLGA) Kathleen McAfee Ray - 3rd Place 4th Flight Gayle Powelson - 1st Place (WLGA) Winner of the Bea Glasgow Award went to our WLGA member, Robin Bunard Congratulations to all of you! Again, we are Windyke-proud! IMPROVING YOUR GAME THIS FALL Luke Reilly Assistant Golf Professional Football season is back and that means the golf season is headed into its final stretch! At this point, many golfers will start to turn off their golfing brains and switch over to other fall activities. However, now is the perfect time to start game planning for the upcoming off season! The 4 month stretch from November to February is the perfect time to start making the necessary changes to your golf swing. Since we are not playing very much during these months, we can focus entirely on the necessary steps to improving your game! You may be asking yourself, How and where do I start? Fortunately, all we need to do is set aside 5-10 minutes to talk about your short term and long term golf goals, and the specific areas of your game that you struggle with. Once we go through this brief interview we can establish a course of action that we would need to take during the off season! Yes, it will be cold during this time period, but we will have access to an indoor video teaching studio! Using the indoor video system allows us to breakdown the specific problems of your swing and allows us to show you the changes we are making! If you have any questions about how you can game plan for the off season, come find me in the pro shop! BOARD OF DIRECTORS STEVE MORRIS, BOARD PRESIDENT The Board of Directors is currently searching for nine members to participate on the Windyke Board starting in January 2019 for a three-year term. The purpose of the Association is to promote and sponsor club activities, promote the enjoyable use of the facilities for the members and to assist the owner in the operation of the club. This is a great opportunity to participate with all of the Board sponsored tournaments and activities throughout the next three years. My experience as a Board member and Executive Board member over the past seven years has been a very positive experience of continuing to meet new members and hopefully making a positive difference on their Windyke experience. If you are interested in being considered for election in November, please reach out to Rob Hendry or the Pro Shop during October.
3 Do You Sell Clubs? ~ Brent Ratliff, Director of Golf Since I have worked here for quite some time and am here in the golf shop a lot and see them every day it is always a shock to me when I hear someone who has been a member here for a long time ask if we sell golf clubs. But I do understand it. If you are not looking for something at the time then it is easy to understand how you could not see that we do in fact sell golf clubs. The other question that is always next is do we fit clubs here. Again, the answer is that yes, we do. In fact, since fitting was first a thing Windyke has been a regional and national leader with several different companies recognizing us repeatedly for excellence in club fitting. But again, I have begun to realize that unless you are looking for clubs then that bit of information just simply does not stick. Typically, people don t begin to research where to buy until they are ready to buy. I also realize that there are countless ways to buy golf clubs (as well as most everything else we sell) available to you. So, (at least for those that are reading this) let me make sure that you know why we think that you should consider buying your golf equipment and supplies from us here at Windyke. The first reason and the reason that most golf shops sell anything at all is that you are already here when the need arises such as needing golf balls at the turn. However, this is the reason that most golf shops fail at selling other items. The myth that products from the Country Club will cost more is based in truth at many facilities. So, once you have been forced to purchase products for a premium price you will make certain to not do again. However, this is the reason that we do sell many other types of items because we sell them at typically the EXACT SAME PRICE AS YOU WOULD FIND THEM ANYWHERE ELSE. The second reason is that we are customers as well and first purchase the products that we intend to sell among the massive sea of choices for golf equipment available. This means that we have taken the time to cut through to only the best products for most every need so that you can rest assured that if you buy it here that it will perform as advertised. The third reason that is just as important as the other two reasons is what happens after the sale. Imagine going out and buying a new television and then having a problem with it after you have had it just a couple months. Did you buy the warranty? Do you have the receipt? Do you remember which store you bought it from much less the sales person that helped you? Did you go online to register your purchase? If you are like me the answer to most of those questions is no. You just wanted it to work and now it does not and you want someone to take care of it for you. That is where we come in. We know you and you know us and we know that you purchased whatever it is here and if it does not work then you bring it back to us not the person on the other end of the don t-care phone line. So, the next time that either you or someone that you know needs anything even remotely related to golf or casual sportswear add us to the list of places that come to mind.
4 Tip from the Pro Brock Shafer, Director of Instruction When researching the subject of this month s article, I came across this picture. Do you agree? I could make an argument for this picture, but I also could do the same for switching the labels. Which side do you fall on? Is it better to focus on your dominant arm or your weaker arm in the golf swing? This is an age old question. Even the best instructors of the day are undecided on this one. Dr. Jim Suttie, one of our best instructors for decades, wrote on the very subject. He said that instructors fall on both sides. Ben Hogan said he wished he had three right hands to fire through the shot. Jimmy Ballard said the right side is the focus on the downswing. On the other hand(pun intended), most instructors speak of extending the left arm back in the takeaway and stretching it out in the follow through. I, too, see value of both arguments. I have always been a left arm puller and it has helped me achieve nice, forward divots. I believe an extended left arm with a supinated left wrist is a fabulous recipe for success. It gives a player the punch and consistency he is looking for. Consistency is the key word. A firm, extended left arm lead to good putting, chipping, and iron play. If you are looking for power, though, I would favor a focus on the right arm. Any player who can rotate the right forearm quickly has the ticket to power. Quick closure of the club face enables a player to hold lag longer. There is an explosive power when one focuses on the importance of the right arm. Dr. Suttie puts it this way: I think we have to compromise on this one though. There is a place for both sides of the body to work since you are putting two hands on the club, The left hand and arm are the guide, and maintain the integrity of the circle. The right side is the power side. We only get in trouble and hit crazy shots when the right hand and right side of the body get involved in accelerating too early. If you are very right-side dominant, go ahead and use your right side, and your distance will improve by just being natural. I like to work with my students and help them find the best arm for them. Some need consistency and other need power. This is part of the fun when taking lessons. Which arm focus can benefit you? Come see me and we will find out which way to go. Fall Wardrobe 101 -Jimmy Rainwater- Assistant Golf Professional With new weather approaching, we ll all need to adjust our wardrobe for this fall s golfing season and our day-to-day routines. Here are five tips to help you build your fall wardrobe with style and reason. Stock your closet with items that fit your style. Are you going for a more youthful and contemporary look or a classic, timeless style? This will lead you to more options suited for you. Decide on a color scheme that fits you. Do you like pastels for a pop of color or a more mellow collec tion of brown, black, grey and navy? A good color collection will fit you and set your mood. Dress for practicality. Every piece in your collection should have a purpose and be worn on a regular basis. Can a clothing item be adapted for casual wear, work, and the golf course? If so, it s a winner! Inventory your closet. Take a look at your current stock and fill in the gaps where you need to. Wear your clothing, don t let the clothing wear you. No matter what you use to stock your closet, wear it with confidence. Know that you ve built a wardrobe that is right for your lifestyle and your needs. With these simple tips, you can create a whole new look or fortify your existing style.

8 Windyke No Pets Policy Many people have asked about bringing their pets out to Windyke. We do not allow pets of any kind to be brought on property. We do allow service animals. In order to properly apply this rule, you need to understand the two types of animals that a customer may have when they arrive at Windyke. Windyke will only allow service animals, no emotional support animals or individuals pets are permitted on property. Questions, concerns or comments may be directed to greghynes@windyke.com. Service Animals: Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task dog has been trained to provide a service that must be directly related to the person s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.. July 12, Many disabled individuals choose to provide a vest for their Service Dog and/or carry identification, however it is not required that they do. You may encounter a disabled individual who chooses to keep their disability private. Emotional Support Animals (ESA): Emotional support animals, comfort animals, and therapy dogs are not service animals under Title II and Title III of the ADA. Other species of animals, whether wild or domestic, trained or untrained, are not considered service animals either. A doctor s letter does not turn an animal into a service animal. An ESA is defined as any animal that brings comfort and/or emotional stability to a person who suffers from a diagnosed mental or emotional disability. Unlike certified service dogs, ESA s do not have the same rights and privileges when it comes to public access. Contrary to popular belief, emotional support animals are NOT allowed in restaurants and other businesses. Unlike service dogs, emotional support animals do not have the same level of access and each business has the right to accept or deny ESA s. Autumn is perfect for Golf at Windyke!
