1 Bremen Elementary-Middle School Parent Bulletin May 25, 2018 Mutual Respect Caring School Community Great Expectations SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM SFSP open site at Bremen Elementary-Middle School will operate from June 5, 2018 thru June 29, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Meals will be served in the High School cafeteria. A Menu is attached to today s bulletin. Free meals will be available to all children 18 years of age and under and to persons over 18 years who are enrolled in a stateapproved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled. Free meals will be provided to all children without charge and without discrimination. Adults are welcome to eat for a charge of $3. All meals must be eaten on site and cannot be taken out of the cafeteria. NOTICE TO INCOMING 6TH GRADE STUDENTS AND PARENTS All 6th grade students must have a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and Menactra (meningitis) vaccinations before the start of the school year. These can be obtained at your family physician, health department for those uninsured, and some CVS and Walgreens locations. Documentations of these vaccinations must be turned in to the nurse s office prior to the first day of school. Please contact Mrs. Stevens, our school nurse, with questions. Upcoming Events 5/28 Memorial Day-no School 5/29 Last Student Day 5/30 8th Grade Cedar Point LAST STUDENT DAY MAY 29TH! NOTE FROM THE CAFETERIA: Students that still owe money are encouraged to make payments before the last day of school. If you are not able to pay your negative charges on the 29th, you may drop a payment off before June 8th. You may drop off to the front office before 3:00 or at Mrs. Stouder s office anytime during the day before 2:00. You can only pay on-line through June 6th. It must be paid up to avoid legal action. MEDICATION PICK UP: All medication must be picked up in the nurse s office before the end of the school year by a parent (or student with written parent permission). Any medication not picked up will be destroyed. 2 Summer Activities FOOTBALL CAMP Bremen Lions football camp will be on June for all students entering grades 1-6. Registration deadline is May 25th, in order to ensure a T-shirt. Students can sign up through June 11th. BASKETBALL CAMP Bremen Boys Basketball summer camp will be held June 4-June 8th. The camp is for boys in grades 1-8. Check out the flyer attached to today s bulletin! SOCCER CAMP Bremen Soccer Association is working with Coerver Coaching to put on a soccer camp in Bremen at Jane s Park during the summer. There is a flyer attached to the bulletin. Registration is also located on Bremen Soccer s home page: BREMEN SUMMER TENNIS LESSONS Learn a lifelong sport while having lots of fun! All information and sign-ups can be done online. Camps are offered in two week sessions or play all four weeks. If you have any questions contact Brita Miller brementennis.weebly.com BREMEN KIDS TRIATHLON The Bremen Kiwanis Kids Triathlon will take place on June 16, The race is held at Sunnyside Park and begins at 9:00 a.m. Registration is now open, and all participants must register online. More information is attached to today s bulletin. LADY LIONS SUMMER BASKETBALL CAMP Girls basketball camp will be available for all girls in 2nd-8th grades next year. A flyer is attached to this bulletin with more information. Check it out! b STRONG 2018 The 4th annual b Strong race will be held on Saturday, July 28th. Volunteers are needed. Meet at Post office (9:45) and walk to Bremen Cemetery. Children are asked to decorate (red-white-blue) bikes and wagons. 1st grade and younger must be accompanied by parent. Children may carry a picture of a veteran from their famiy in the parade.

Chromebook Damage Cost: Power Adapter and Cord: $45.00 Case:$25.00 LCD Screen: $45.00 Keyboard: $50 If more than 5 keys are missing or the keys are so damaged they can t be fixed, the student will have to pay for a new keyboard. ANY other damages to the device including damages we find internally after turn in, which require it to be turned into the insurance company for repair, will have a $50 deductible. Distribution Information: What: Device Distribution for the school year Who: Grades 5-12 When: Wednesday, August 1, 2018; 11am-1pm Thursday, August 2, 2017; 10am-7pm Where: Bremen Schools, Lion Den. Notes: New or 5th Grade students and parents will be watching the 1:1 video and will be signing the responsible use agreement (RUP). If an RUP was not signed last year, you will not receive your device until one is turned in. You will not receive your device without a receipt (Digital or paper) showing you have paid for the insurance premium. A student who has not paid for previous damage will not receive their device until the damage is paid for in full. Does a parent need to be there? Only if: You are a new student or in grades 5th Never turned in signed a RUP. Your parent needs to pay for insurance. I have a student in Grades 3 or 4. Can we pick up the device? No, but you can pay the insurance premium and sign the RUP. 3rd and 4th Grade students will receive their Chromebook in class. Their insurance must be paid and RUP turned in before receiving the device. Class of 2028, important device information BEMS payment information: Please make all checks payable to Bremen Elementary- Middle School or BPS. Partial Payments are accepted. Credit Cards are accepted. The Balance needs to be paid in full before your student picks up their device in August. Payments can be made in the Bremen Elementary School bookstore. The Bremen Elementary School Office is closed the month of July. If you wish to make a payment in July please go to the Bremen Corporation office. You may also mail in payments. As the school year winds down and summer break approaches Bremen FFA is wrapping things up for the school year and getting ready for the next school year full of fun and excitement. We are hard at work planning out our Diamond anniversary year, yes you heard it our chapter is turning 75! We have a big year for our chapter and our members and officers are hard at work making it our best year yet. Summer Events FFA Indiana State Convention On June 19 th we will be taking students on our yearly state convention trip from June 19 th to June 21 st. Our very own David Hochstetler will be receiving his state degree this year and we hope you can join us on this special occasion. Fireman s Festival and Parade Its almost that time of year, Yes the Fireman s Festival is fast approaching and our chapter is hard at work planning our tent and float. We are excited to be a part of this year s festivities and we are counting on your help and support at the Fireman s Festival. Coach Leeper and the football team are excited to offer students entering grades 1-6 an opportunity to learn fundamentals from the 2018 Bremen Lions. The cost of the camp will be $ Your child will receive 5 days of football instruction from coaches and current players! Your child will also be given a Bremen Football Camp T-shirt. The camp will run the week of June The camp will run from 9:00-10:00 am. Grades 1-3 will participate together and grades 4-6 will work together during the camp. The camp will be located on Bunge Field, the high school field. Please have your child wear shorts, T-shirt and cleats or athletic shoes. If there is inclement weather, we will be in Gym A. Division 2: Two lengths of the park pool, which is just shy of 50 yards. Non-swimmers must bring their own life jackets. There is no separate division for nonswimmers. Bike All bikes must have handlebar grips or end caps; no raw metal edges will be allowed. Approved helmets are required and must be worn. Kickstands are required and must be used in transition areas. Division 1: 1.6 mile bike course on city streets. Division 2: 2.5 mile bike course on city and country roads. Run Division 1: 0.6 mile run on park sidewalks and grassy areas. Divisions 2: 1 mile run circling the park, mostly on sidewalks and a few grassy areas Visit Our Website Race Rules Division 1: Children in Division 1 are expected to do as much on their own as possible, however one adult per participant is allowed. The adult may move alongside the participant as a guide only. During the swim event, shirts, shoes and helmet must be left with the bike in the transition area. No adults are allowed on the bike course (we have a bike safety crew to assist with any problems your child might have.) The child must be in control of the bike at all times. At no time can an adult maneuver the bike during the race. The child must return the bike to the starting location in the bike transition area when returning from the bike event. An adult can accompany the child on the run with extreme caution not to be in the way of other runners. The adult must break away and let child cross finish line on their own. Division 2: No assistance will be allowed for participants in Division 2. They are expected to do everything on their own. Racer s shirt, shoes and helmet must be left in transition area. Following the bike course, the bike must be returned to the space in which it started. Packet pick-up MANDATORY race packet pickup will be held at the pavilion at Sunnyside Park on Friday, June 15 th from 4pm until 7pm. Bring your bike helmet for mandatory inspection. Child must come to packet pickup to receive number markings for race.

Proceeds of this fundraising event will be contributed to Beacon Children s Hospital and the b STRONG 31:6 Fund, a component fund of the Marshall County Community Foundation, Inc. The mission of b STRONG 31:6 is to give hope & encourage others to grow in the Lord s strength. 15 Lenae (pictured above left) with her nephew Landon, and sister Laura Bates as they race to the finish at b STRONG LENAE CASSEL MAY 2018 When I was asked to write a story of strength I thought to myself, my story is not one of my strength but is a story of love. Mine is a story of God s love, God s grace, and the love of the many supportive people in my life. I have never gone through any of the hard times in my life alone. On July 7, 2011, my husband Chase and I gave birth to our first sweet daughter, Jailyn Ruth Cassel. She was born at 20 weeks gestation, weighing 1 lb. 1oz. After few short breaths, she went home to Jesus. She wasn t ready for this earth but we will never forget her beautiful face, eyelashes, and tiny fingernails. Although too small to sustain life, every body system was present. Isn t it incredible that God created every intricate detail of her before 20 weeks in the womb? I am amazed by God and the life He created in such a short time. I was angry for a very long time following Jailyn s birth/death. My pregnancy was completely normal until I went into premature labor. I didn t understand God s plan and why this had happened to us. I asked myself what I could have done differently and why my body was unable to carry our daughter to term? I would never wish this horrible loss on anyone else, but I was still upset and bitter that we had to endure the pain of losing a child. During that time, I still believed in God but I didn t understand Him and I struggled to trust Him. We had a beautiful wedding with our closest friends and family, bought our first home together, and with the help and support of Chase and our families I became a registered nurse. God was blessing us in so many ways. We still mourned the loss of Jailyn but were able to talk about her with joy and became less selfish, knowing she was in a greater place, in Heaven. We had so many things to fill our lives with happiness but we longed for something more. To become parents once again. The Lord is my Shepherd A psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely Your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

16 Our first pregnancy was followed by years of infertility, which led us to start fertility treatments. We never gave up hope that God would bless us with another child but we thought we needed help. God proved us wrong. He had a plan that we weren t patient enough to see. After 6 months of treatments we took 1 month off, my body needed a break and emotionally we needed a break. God used that month to show us His love and His plan. He used it to show us that He was in fact in control at all times. We became pregnant without the help of any ultrasounds, injections, or medications. God gave us this baby, no one else. If we needed any more confirmation that this was God s plan, He gave it to us. Our second daughter s due date was November 11th, 5 years later, the same due date we had with Jailyn. That kind of thing doesn t happen by chance, but by His greater power. First family picture with Carsyn 2 months old-10/16/16 Comparison of Carsyn s growth 18 months 2/5/18 and 2 days old 8/7/16 March 25th, years old On August 5, 2016 around 6:30 a.m., Chase and I read this passage from our Jesus Calling daily devotional: Rest in my sufficiency, as you consider the challenge this day presents. Do not wear yourself out by worrying about whether you can cope with the pressures. Keep looking to Me and communicating with Me, as we walk through this day together. We were amazed by how perfect it was for us in that moment as I was being prepared for an urgent cesarean section and our little girl was about to be born far too early. I felt that the devotional was written just for us and I then had peace that God was in control. Our second beautiful daughter, Carsyn Alane Cassel was born at 26 weeks gestation, weighing 1 lb. 14 oz. She spent 114 days in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center Mishawaka NICU. Although we were incredibly blessed by her health and the strength God gave her, each day was an up and down battle. She overcame more obstacles than most of us have in our lifetime, a true miracle. God blessed her and us with a NICU team that gave her the best love and care she could have received. They became like family and comforted us each step of the way. The support and prayers we received from countless people we don t even know and never will know was overwhelming and wonderful. The power of prayer helped us bring her home nearly 4 months later; she required oxygen and an apnea/heart monitor, but she was otherwise happy and healthy. After 41 days at home and at 5 months of age, she said goodbye to the oxygen. She is now 20 lbs., 21 months old, and thriving. She is joyful, loving, beautiful, smart, and healthy. We are beyond blessed. To God be the glory. On August 6, 2016, the day after Carsyn was born, our Jesus Calling devotional wrote: When things seem to be going all wrong, stop and affirm your trust in Me. Calmly bring these matters to Me, and leave them in My capable hands. Then, simply do the next thing. Stay in touch with Me through thankful, trusting prayers, resting in My sovereign control. I held onto this passage throughout Carsyn s NICU stay and still think about it today. It helped me then because I was in awe of how it was exactly what I needed to hear during one of the scariest times of my life. It continues to help me because I remain humbled by God s timing. From due dates to devotionals, He always shows me that He has a miraculous plan. The time we spent in the NICU led me to become a NICU nurse. God used Carsyn to lead me to a job where I can help & pray for other babies, fathers, and mothers who are in similar situations as my family was once in. I feel extremely blessed to be in the career that I am now in and know that this was all part of God s plan for me to support others. The love you have for your children even before they are born is indescribable, holding them in your arms for the first time is incredible, and not taking them home with you is truly heartbreaking. We have left both of our angels at the hospital and went home without them, but in two different ways. In each situation God has provided and blessed us in ways we didn t know were possible. After writing my story I have realized that it is in fact a story of strength. The strength of prayer, the strength of God s love, the strength of the SJRMC NICU team, the strength of hope, the strength of our beautiful daughter, the strength of our marriage, the strength of our friendships and family, the strength of God s grace, the strength of God s timing, and the strength of God s plan for our lives. 20 Marshall County Junior Golf Tour 2018 The 38th year of the Marshall County Junior Golf Tour includes 7 tournaments and will begin on Monday, June 4th at Woodbury Golf Course (formerly Plymouth Rock). Boy s age groups are: 9 & under (play 6 holes), (play 6 holes), (play 9 holes), and (play 18 holes). Girl s age groups are: 9 & under (play 6 holes), (play 6 holes), (play 9 holes), and (play 18 holes) Parents are welcome and encouraged to walk and help monitor play as well as record and verify scores, but will not be allowed to coach or provide cart rides during the events. All children ages 12 & under will receive an award at each event. Contestants may choose to compete at an elevated age group but not a lower age group than his/her age. Proper golf attire (collared shirt or jacket) is required along with proper bottoms. No denim or gym shorts please! *POINTS SYSTEM (format used to determine season champions) : There are 7 tour events but only the player s best 5 point total finishes will be used to determine the season champion in each division. First place for each event is equal to the number of participants playing on each date in his or her division, not to exceed 10 points; second place is half the number of participants; third place is one point less than second, etc. Example 10 participants 1 st =10 points, 2 nd =5 points, 3 rd =4 points, 4 th =3 points, 5 th =2 points, 6 th -10 th =1 point. Ties for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will be broken by sudden death holes, putt-offs, or chip-offs. All other ties will be decided by the last hole played. Division champions will be presented awards at the final tour stop, Swan Lake Resort, on Wednesday, June 27th. Please decided with your playing partners where you think it crossed the hazard and drop a new ball one club length from the decided location. Double Par+ Rule : Max shots from tee to green is double par. For Par 3 s this is 6, Par 4 s this is 8, and Par 5 s this is 10. If you have hit your 6th/8th/10th shot and the ball is still not on the green, pick it up and place it on the front of the green. Your first putt will be your 7th/9th/11th stroke and you will continue until the ball is in the hole. Parent Rule : Parents are not allowed to provide advice about non-rule related issues and cannot offer you a ride in their cart or carry your bag in their cart. You must push, pull, or carry your own bag at all times. It is suggested that parents stay about 100 yards ahead of play so that they can assist with finding lost balls when necessary. There is also a 3 minute limit for searching for a lost ball. Unplayable Lie Rule : If your swing is obstructed by a man-made object or something else out of your control, such as a large branch, and everyone in the group agrees, take one club length without penalty and continue playing. Swing & Miss Rule : If you take a legitimate swing at the ball, not a practice swing, it does count toward your total for the hole. Ready Golf Rule : Golf etiquette dictates that the person furthest away from the hole goes next, but to speed up play we don t need to follow this etiquette except when putting. If you have taken 3 attempts and can t hit it out, take the ball out and place it in the grass next to the bunker and continue playing. There will not be a penalty stroke assessed for this. Individual Stroke Rule : You are allowed to roll the ball no more than 6 inches, without changing the cut (a ball in the rough must stay in the rough, etc) on each shot that is not on the green. This does include the fringe, you can roll the ball on the fringe even if you are going to putt the ball.
