2 August Edition 2012, Volume 8 Page 2 THOUGHTS FROM THE OUTSIDE GUY T.S. Eliot in The Waste Land called April the cruelest month, but being a turfgrass manager in the Mid-Atlantic my vote goes for July. The day time heat and humidity I can deal with; it s the warm, muggy overnights that bring on weakened turf and various plant diseases that give me sleepless nights. The plant goes for long periods of time where it can t relax and re-group and get ready for the next stressful weather period. My analogy is that July for the plant is similar to us trying to get a good night s sleep without air conditioning. You toss and turn, sweat and wake in the morning feeling nearly as tired as when you placed your head on the pillow. Its cool overnight temperatures in the 50 s to low 60 s that bring relief to the plant. So with July behind us we can begin to think about cooler nights, lower humidity and hopefully nice gentle rains in our near future. If nothing else it s a great dream. During the period from Memorial Day to the vast majority of our time is spent on routine maintenance tasks on the course. We mow, mow some more, spray and water looking to keep the plant going till we get the opportunity to aerate, verticut and overseed and again set the stage for getting the plant through the next summer period. Just about the time we re getting tired of the routine stuff aeration and renovation time arrives and we get to beat up the course, which we truly enjoy. So as I write this article we re a month away from aeration and already getting the machines ready. Through June golf nation wide is up approximately 15% for the year so it looks like golf rounds, for the first time in many years will end the year in positive territory which is great news for all owners, operators and those who love the game. Mild winter weather certainly got the year off to a great start and fortunately that momentum has continued. Difficult to enjoy golf on certain oppressive summer days but sweater weather is not too far away which often means glorious days for golf. Have you noticed the trend in my thinking? Cool, crisp sweater weather when you feel especially lucky to be alive. At the upcoming PGA at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island ALL bunkering and waste areas will be considered sandy areas and will be played through the green. What this means is that players will be allowed to ground their club, remove loose impediments and even take practice swings. Interesting indeed. If these rules were allowed in everyday golf how would it impact your play, thinking and scoring? At a recent Green Committee meeting members noted that ball mark repair on greens seems to have improved since mention was made in the July newsletter. I thank you very much for that and simply say keep up the effort, while not forgetting divot replacement where practical and raking your way out of the bunkers. Thanks again. So as we enter the last full month of summer we on the Grounds Staff will continue to provide excellence in our turf and playing conditions and hope you all find the time to relax with a pleasant round or two at the club. 3 August Edition 2012, Volume 8 Patriot Golf Day Once again French Creek Golf Club will participate in the Patriot Golf Day to be held over the weekend, August 31 September 3. Millions of golfers and golf fans will be inspired to participate in Patriot Golf Day Therefore, your participation this year in Patriot Golf Day will provide a needed link for those in our game to truly touch the lives of those in need. The Patriot Golf Day and the Folds of Honor Foundation provides education scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our Great Nation. Learn more at Page 3 Steeplechase 4 th of July Golf Tournament The Ryder Cup style format put the Blue Team, captained by Head Golf Professional Jeffrey Haas, against the White Team, captained by Assistant Golf Professional Bill Kindoll. Each team had 21 members plus the playing captains. After all of the dust settled at the end of all of the matches the Blue Team took home the victory. All members of the Blue Team received $50 golf shop credit each. 4 August Edition 2012, Volume 8 Page 4 CHEF JOE S KITCHEN The summer has been a scorcher so far. The rain has done its part enough to keep the golf course conditions nice, but not too much to interfere with golf. One thing is sure- the back outside patio is the place to hang out in the evening with a cocktail and a bite to eat. I wish I had a place with such a view and atmosphere to take my wife on my nights off. It s just about perfect. Friday, August 10 th I am featuring a Prime Rib night. I will offer a Jr., a Queen, King, and a Colossal cut of slow roasted Prime Rib, so we have a portion that works for everyone. We will offer a variety of side dishes to choose from to accompany your Rib. Wednesday, August 15 th I am having a Summertime Kids Night. Like we did over the winter, member s kid s 12 and under will have a special menu to choose an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert. The children enjoy making choices and the parents get a night off from cooking. Oh yeah, it is also free! So, take advantage and enjoy a night at the club. I will try to stop out and visit, as I miss the kid s, as we do not see them as much in the summer due to everyone s busy schedule. Call and make reservations early! I hope everyone has taken advantage of the local farmer s stands around the area. It is great to have the freshness of local products, and it s nice to support the local farmers. Wednesday, August 29 th we will feature an Italian Family Style dining menu. You can choose 3 entrees offered and they are served to your table family style. It is great for families to eat together this way. I still have fond memories of my Mom putting the food on the table every night in ceramic bowls and everyone digging in. They have been very popular, so if you haven t tried it yet, I invite you to give it a try. I hope everyone is enjoying the summer and I look forward to seeing and serving you delicious food while you enjoy your club.
