After racing to a school-record 16-0 start, Georgia has lost three of its last five games including its last two outings. The Lady Bulldogs lost last Sunday when Ole Miss rallied from eight down with less than two minutes remaining to win Bianca Thomas canned a 25-foot three with 5.1 seconds remaining to complete the improbable comeback. On Thursday in Starkville, Mississippi State opened up a 16-point lead with less than five minutes left and then withstood a furious Georgia rally that trimmed the margin to four with less than a minute remaining. State hit six straight free throws to preserve the upset. Getting well at Beard-Eaves Coliseum presents a daunting challenge. Though Georgia leads the all-time series by a margin, the Tigers possess an 8-7 edge in games contested on The Plains. The Lady Dogs have won 11 of the last 14 dates, but AU has captured three of the last four games on its floor. Lady Bulldog headlines... However, Auburn possesses an 8-7 edge in games played at Beard-Eaves Coliseum. In the most recent matchup last season in Auburn, the Tigers captured a victory behind 22 points from DeWanna Bonner. After Georgia led most of the first half, an Alli Smalley three 14 seconds into the second stanza gave Auburn the lead. The next 14 minutes featured three ties and 14 lead changes, the last giving the Tigers a advantage with 6:00 remaining. A late 7-0 lead iced the win for Auburn. A complete box score from that game as well as game-by-game results in the series can be found on Page 3 of these Notes. Auburn s February victory avenged a Jan. 29 setback to the Lady Bulldogs that represented the Tigers first loss of the season following a 20-game winning streak. Angel Robinson scored 17 points, Christy Marshall added 15 and Porsha Phillips and Angela Puleo both chipped in 10 for the Lady Bulldogs. Perhaps more important in the outcome was Ashley Houts 13 assists to one turnover performance. Houts effort equaled the most assists ever by a Lady Bulldog in SEC play Georgia Lady Bulldog Basketball Active Roster No. Name Pos. Ht. Cl. Hometown... Last time out... Georgia rallied from a 16-point deficit with less than five minutes remaining to cut that margin to four with less than a minute left but could not complete the improbable comeback in a loss at Mississippi State on Thursday night. State hit six straight free throws in the closing seconds to ensure the upset. After two ties and six lead changes over the first 15 minutes, an Alexis Rack jumper ignited a 9-0 run that put Mississippi State up just two minutes later. I m pleased that there was not any quit in us but unfortunately in the first half we didn t transition well, Andy Landers siad. They drove the ball hard on us and got the rim and that s what got us behind the eight ball. Georgia chipped away at the lead early in the second stanza and pulled within six with 15:14 left, but State responded with a 6-0 run. State eventually extended its advantage to 16 points at the 4:42 mark, but the Lady Bulldogs put together a 16-4 surge to pull within four with 54 seconds left. Free throws hurt Georgia in the second stanza as the Lady Bulldogs hit just 10-of-22 trips to the stripe during the period, missing seven straight at one point. Alexis Rack scored 34 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead Mississippi State. Rack connected on 7-of-10 threes, many coming from a significant step behind the arc. Rack was outstanding at the three in the second half, Landers said. We didn t leave her open. We perhaps could have stepped up a little quicker off the screen, but she s uncanny with her range and how she sets herself up for the three. Peach State products abound Of the 21 active players on the combined rosters of Georgia and Auburn, 12 are Peach State natives. The Lady Bulldogs lineup include six homegrown players Anne Marie Armstrong, Ashley Houts, Porsha Phillips, Angel Robinson, Tamika Willis and Candace Williams. That tally doesn t include injured Christy Marshall. Auburn s roster features Jordan Greenleaf, Morgan Jennings, Parrisha Simmons, Nicolle Thomas, Morgan Toles and Pascale West. In addition, freshman Blanche Alverson, who lists Andalusia, Ala., as her hometown, was the Georgia Class AA Player of the Year last season while leading Buford (Ga.) High to a state title.

3 Lady Bulldogs vs. Auburn Game Notes Page 3 On a side note, Alverson was coached by Gene Durden at Buford. He was Ashley Houts coach for her first three seasons at Dade County High before moving to the Gwinnett County powerhouse. Proving I-85 and I-20 are a two-way roads, the teams rosters include three natives UGA s Meredith Mitchell and AU s aforementioned Alverson and Alli Smalley. Refusing the helping hand The Lady Bulldogs didn t help themselves at the line in their last two outings. Georgia missed 3-of-4 free throws in the final 54 seconds against Ole Miss last Sunday, with two of those misses coming on the front end of one-and-one opportunities. During Thursday s loss at Mississippi State the Lady Bulldogs were just 10-of-22 from the charity stripe in the second half. It s difficult also not to note that Georgia missed seven straight at the line at one point in the second stanza...and trailed by eight points (65-57) at that juncture. Andy Landers isn t willing to blame those setbacks directly on FT shortcomings. It would be easy to say we left five points off the board in the final minute against Ole Miss and left probably points out there in the final four-five minutes at Mississippi State, Landers said. But that would be glossing over other concerns. We did not execute in the half court or transition in a way that might have kept us out of those situations to begin with. Can we create an honor?? The SEC does not recognize a Most Improved Player in its post-season honors but Georgia sophomore Meredith Mitchell would have to be a leading candidate if such an accolade existed. A year ago, Mitchell averaged 2.1 points and 1.3 rebounds as a freshman playing spot time for the Lady Bulldogs. This season, Mitchell has more than quadrupled both her scoring average to 8.5 points and her rebounding average to 5.4 boards while playing 30.4 minutes per game. And after a slow start in league play, the Midfield, Ala., native is averaging 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in Georgia s four most recent contests. Tradition ALWAYS graduates to the tune of 102% There s a common catch phrase used by numerous college athletic teams: Tradition Never Graduates. Well, with Lady Bulldog Basketball, that saying has been altered to Tradition ALWAYS Graduates. During his 30 seasons at Georgia, Andy Landers has coached 54 four-year letterwinners. Only one of those players, 2009 senior Danielle Taylor, has not earned her degree from the UGA. Taylor, a Social Work major, is spending this year completing a year-long internship she could not undertake while still playing basketball and will receive her degree in May Landers only two non-graduating four-year letterwinners other than Taylor completed their degrees in Kedra Holland-Corn (above left with Landers) secured her degree in sociology in May, while Lady (Hardmon) Grooms received her diploma in recreation and leisure studies in August. Adding to the impressive ledger is the fact Tina Taylor actually received three degrees while she was at UGA for six years of eligibility due to knee injuries. Taylor earned her bachelor s in accounting in four years, added a second degree in finance in her fifth year and received a master s in accounting in the final year in Athens. To calculate Landers unofficial graduation rate, we feel strongly that he should be awarded extra credit for the extra degrees Taylor earned while eligible to compete. Therefore, 54 four-year Lady Bulldogs possess a total of 55 diplomas from the University of Georgia, giving Landers a graduation rate of 102 percent! That tally doesn t even include the degree in child & family development fifth-year senior and three-year letterwinner Angel Robinson (above right with Landers) has already earned. Robinson is now pursuing a master s in adult education. Hassell coming on consistently Jasmine Hassell s 20-point, sevenrebound outburst against Ole Miss last Sunday just headlines what has been consistent improvement by the freshman as the season progressed. That performance earned the two-time AAA Miss Tennessee Basketball SEC Freshman of the Week honors on Monday, but her increased contributions and efficiency can really be traced to early December...and the Dec. 6 Georgia Tech victory. In the first seven games, Hassell averaged 3.9 points by shooting 39.2 percent (11-of- 28) from the floor and 50.0 percent (5-of-10) from the line. In the last 14 games, Hassell is averaging 6.9 points per game while hitting 61.3 percent (38-of-62) of her field goals and 75.0 percent (21-of-28) at the line. We ve been telling anybody that will listen that she s getting better and better every week, Andy Landers said after Hassell scored 14 points in just 13 minutes against Detroit on Dec. 22. Her strength is incredible. She would bang in between two cars and come up with a shot, but her conditioning was an issue. A run of one-timers With the Southeastern Conference schedule expanding to 16 games this season, each institution is playing five teams on a home-and-home basis and the six other members once. Auburn is the fourth of five straight onetimers. The span began with Tennessee, Ole Miss and Mississippi State and concludes on Thursday against LSU in Athens. Balanced O...stellar D Georgia has displayed splendid balance on the offensive end. Seven Lady Bulldogs are averaging between 5.9 and 12.4 points per game. The Lady Bulldogs calling card has been their defense, however. In the latest NCAA statistics through Thursday s game, Georgia ranks No. 10 in field goal percentage defense (.343) and No. 12 in scoring defense (53.4 ppg). Most Ws on the sideline...ever Credit goes to Tennessee SID Debby Jennings for helping uncover this nugget. When Georgia hosted Tennessee on Jan. 21, the combined 1,845 career victories of Andy Landers (824) and Pat Summitt (1,021) entering that contest equaled the most for a matchup in the history of Division I women s basketball. That fact isn t too surprising considering Summitt and Landers are 1-2 on several lists of the nation s most successful floor generals, including number of weeks in the AP poll, NCAA bids, Sweet 16s and consecutive winning seasons as outlined below. Ranking Landers & Summitt AP Polls NCAAs S16s Winners 1. Summitt Landers Interestingly, when Tennessee faced Rutgers at the Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden in December, the win totals of Summitt (1,012) and C. Vivian Stringer (832) going into that matchup added up to 1,844 Ws. And before you go Hmmm? Anyone wishing to confirm the aforementioned numbers would probably consult the 2010 NCAA Records Book and say... Hey. This has Landers with 725 wins entering What gives? Well in our mind, that total is not quite accurate. Georgia politely disagrees with the NCAA on what constitutes Landers complete collegiate coaching record. Prior to UGA, Landers compiled an record in four seasons at Roane State Community College, a junior college in Harriman, Tenn. The NCAA does not recognize Landers Roane State wins because they were not earned at a four-year institution. Therefore, the NCAA says Landers career record includes only his efforts at Georgia. UGA chooses and has since in 1979 to include Landers Roane State results as part of his career record. With all due respect, its seems odd that the NCAA allows Georgia and every other women s basketball program to count wins accumulated against junior college competition when the game was in an emerging state during the 1970s but won t recognize Landers efforts in that same time frame. In fact, more than a third of Landers victories at Roane 33 wins, or 40.2 percent to be exact came against four-year schools. Roane compiled a 33-1 record versus fouryear institutions during Landers tenure. Just winners, baby! The Lady Bulldogs record-setting 16-0 start to also guaranteed their 31st straight season winning season under Andy Landers. Georgia is one of only four schools to post a winning record during each of the 28 seasons now 29 for the Lady Bulldogs since women s hoops came under the auspices of the NCAA with the season. In fact, the Lady Volunteers and Phoenix (UWGB) also already have guaranteed winning records for the campaign with each team reaching 16 Ws in mid-january. Louisiana Tech was 12-6 entering a Saturday matchup with Idaho in Ruston. Record start snapped... Georgia s 16-0 start to begin the season was the Lady Bulldogs best opening to a campaign ever. The previous mark was a 14-0 mark to begin the Final Four season. All told, the Lady Bulldogs have started seven seasons with double-digit winning streaks: 16 this year, 14 in , 13 in both and , 12 in the Final Four season, 11 in and 10 by the SEC Championship team....shy of overall win streak mark Georgia s 16-0 start is not only the Lady Bulldogs best beginning ever, it also represents the fourth-longest winning streak in the program s storied history. The school record for consecutive wins is 20 contests during Georgia s 1986 SEC Championship campaign. The Lady Bulldogs 1996 NCAA runnerup squad won 19 in a row, while the 1991 SEC Championship squad put together 18 straight wins. She hit the game-winning three-pointer with 17 seconds remaining in overtime versus the Wildcats and scored a game-high 17 points in the decision over the Gators. James has already equaled the most Freshman of the Week recognitions by a Lady Bulldog established by Ashley Houts during and is just one certificate shy of the current SEC record. Lady Bulldogs return to pre-season Associated Press poll AP Pre-season Polls Season Rank Season Rank Georgia opens the campaign with a pre-season Associated Press ranking of No. 21, ending a one-year hiatus from the initial AP poll for the first time since the early-80s. Last fall, the Lady Bulldogs were not ranked in the first AP poll for the first time since Jimmy Carter was President and Herschel Walker was wrapping up a freshman campaign that turned him into a national phenomenon. The pre-season edition of the AP poll was released on Nov. 25, just months before Ronald Reagan would take up residence on Pennsylvania Avenue and four days before Walker capped the Bulldogs undefeated regular-season with 205 rushing yards in a victory over Georgia Tech. Georgia went on to defeat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to capture the national title. The following fall, Georgia was listed No. 12 at the opening the season, which also represented UGA s first-ever AP ranking of any kind. Upstart Andy Landers had just begun to make some noise in Athens, leading Georgia to the 1981 WNIT Championship and landing Janet Harris, the top-ranked prep prospect in the country. Since then, Georgia has been a mainstay in the polls. The Lady Bulldogs had been ranked in 27 straight pre-season polls, including 21 times in the top 10 as outlined in the column to the right. FYI, the Lady Bulldogs were in the No. 32 position among the teams receiving votes in the pre-season poll but never moved into the rankings during the season...also another first since James was honored initially after scoring a team-high 15 points in an upset of No. 13 Oklahoma in the season opener. She was selected again after averaging 19.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a trio of Thanksgiving week victories. Landers now 500 over.500 With a Jan. 3 win at, Andy Landers improved to in his 31 seasons as UGA s first and still only full-time women s basketball head coach. That put Landers an almost unfathomable 500 victories over.500. Lady Dogs return to AP top-10 Georgia inched up to No. 9 in the Dec. 21 edition of the Associated Press poll...a position common for Lady Bulldog Basketball historically if not of late. The ranking represented the Lady Bulldogs first top-10 appearance in just under two years. Georgia was No. 10 in the Jan. 7, 2008, edition of the poll before losing to Auburn and dropping to No. 12 the next week. Georgia has been a mainstay of both the Associated Press poll and the top-10. The Lady Bulldogs now have been included in 443 weekly polls, a tally that ranks third nationally. During those weeks, Georgia has been included in the top times and in the top five on 145 occasions. A perfect non-conference Georgia put a bow on its impressive run through the non-conference slate with its victory at Savannah State. The Lady Bulldogs posted just their fourth perfect non-conference regular-season record ever. In addition, Georgia was 14-0 against non-sec competition during the regular season, notched a 15-0 mark versus non-sec teams in and compiled an 18-0 such record A trio of high school reunions Three Lady Bulldogs have faced a former high school teammate this season. Most recently, Stone Mountain, Ga., natives and Redan High classmates Porsha Phillips and Amani Franklin were in competing uniforms in the Jan. 7 game. At Redan, Phillips and Franklin were coached by former Lady Bulldog Rhonda Malone, a two-year starter at UGA and a member of teams that reached the 1983 Final Four and captured the 1983 and 1984 SEC titles. On Jan. 3, Jasmine Hassell took on s Tierney Jenkins. They played together for two seasons at Wilson Central High in Lebanon, Tenn., and helped the school to a state championship in On Dec. 1, Midfield (Ala.) High alums Meredith Mitchell and LaKenya Lowe met when UGA hosted UAB. Mitchell and Lowe were cornerstones for teams that won back-toback state titles in 2007 and Low- and High-ball history Through the years, much has been made of Georgia s record when its offense clicks. With decisive wins over Southern Miss and Savannah State, the Lady Dogs improved to when scoring 80 or more points under Andy Landers, an astronomical winning percentage of With their Nov. 22 win over Rutgers, the Lady Bulldogs made history on the other end of the scoring spectrum, however. The victory over the Scarlet Knights represented the first time in 967 games coached by Andy Landers at Georgia that the Lady Dogs won when scoring fewer than 50. At that point, Georgia had failed to reach the half-century mark just 20 times during Landers 31 seasons in Athens, and the Lady Bulldogs lost all previous 19 contests. Trio joins starter sorority When Andy Landers welcomed a top-five recruiting class to Athens this fall, the question became more of a when than an if scenario regarding a freshman starting for Georgia during In Landers first 30 seasons in Athens, 62 different freshmen earned starting roles, including 21 who did so for their collegiate debuts. During the first five games of the campaign, Jasmine James (Chattanooga), Jasmine Hassell ( State) and Anne Marie Armstrong (Texas A&M-CC) became the 63rd, 64th and 65th freshmen to get the nod under Landers. Mitchell making a mark Meredith Mitchell has helped prove the adage that a player makes their most improvement between their freshman and sophomore seasons. Mitchell s highest contributions as a freshman were eight points, five rebounds and 26 minutes. In the first three games of , Mitchell bettered those marks and the subsequent new efforts seven times. The Midfield, Ala., native upped her scoring mark to nine and her minutes tally to 27 against Oklahoma. She then bested the board tally to six and the MP to 35 at Chattanooga. Against Rutgers, Mitchell topped all three existing qualifiers with 11 points, eight rebounds and 40 minutes played. Mitchell has since improved those marks to 17 points against Tennessee State and 11 rebounds versus Ole Miss. A historic Houts homecoming With Georgia trailing by six and 30 seconds left in the first half, Ashley Houts took control of her homecoming at Chattanooga. She scored 13 straight in a victory played just 15 minutes from her hometown. The senior point guard knocked down a three to cut UTC s lead in half at the break and she scored Georgia s first 10 points in the first 3:24 of the second period to supply a lead UGA never relinquished. Houts not only propelled Georgia to victory, she also furthered her own individual legend in Lady Bulldog Basketball annals. Houts three-pointer late in the first half moved her past Pam Irwin-Osbolt into the No. 26 spot among the Lady Bulldogs career scoring leaders. Houts eventually finished with 21 points against the Lady Mocs, enough to also ascend past both No. 25 Carla Green and No. 24 Cynthia Collins on the career scoring leaders ledger. An eternity of bench time Ashley Houts checked out with 1:41 left at Chattanooga on Nov. 19 to the boisterous cheers of more than Dade County 500 fans.

7 Lady Bulldogs vs. Auburn Game Notes Page 7 Those folks made the short drive from her hometown of Trenton, less than 15 minutes from the UTC arena. The 101 seconds she did not play against the Lady Mocs was longer than the amount Houts enjoyed in all 14 SEC games combined during the season (67.6 seconds). Fourth ranked W in opener The win over No. 13 Oklahoma represented the fourth time the Lady Dogs opened the year by beating a ranked foe. Georgia also: knocked off No. 12 Rutgers in the initial outing of when those Scarlet Knights finished as NCAA runnersup; topped No. 16 Southern Illinois to begin ; and bested No. 14 Rutgers in the first game UGA s 1983 Final Four season. Red, White & Blue together Ashley Houts and Oklahoma s Danielle Robinson who virtually evenly split point guard duties for the U.S. team that won the 2009 World University Games squared off in the season opener. Houts started four games and averaged 8.3 points by connecting on 52.6 percent of her field goal s, 47.1 percent of her threepointers and 90.9 of her trips to the line. She also averaged 1.7 steals and 1.6 assists. The medal was Houts second international Gold. In 2007, she was the lone rising sophomore on the American squad that won the FIBA U21 World Championships. Robinson started the other three World University contests and averaged 4.6 points and leading the team with averages of 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Marshall s surgery goes well Christy Marshall underwent successful surgery on Nov. 17 to repair the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee that she tore during the pre-season. Marshall injured her knee in a workout on Oct. 13, two days before the official opening of practice. It rips my guts out every time a kid falls and grabs their knee, Andy Landers said the day after the injury was sustained. It s an all-too-common injury in women s basketball. My heart goes out to Christy. We re all in a state of shock at this point. Marshall, the 2006 SEC Sixth Woman of the Year, started 21 of 31 games in , averaging 8.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. For her career, she has played in 95 games with 28 starts and averaged of 7.7 points and 3.6 rebounds. Record number of TV dates! Fourteen Lady Bulldog regular-season will be televised in That tally matches the most in school history. In , 14 regular-season dates were among the school-record 19 TV games that aired that season. Wins over Georgia Tech and Clemson on CSS christened the TV slate. CSS also aired the loss to Ole Miss and will show matchups versus LSU, South Carolina and. FSN, which has produced the Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Mississippi State contests, also will do so tonight at. Rounding out the coverage: Georgia s win over Florida in Athens aired on ESPNU, as will the Auburn game; the Arkansas game in Athens will be broadcast on the SEC Network; and at the rematch with Florida will be televised by ESPN2, FSN or Sun Sports. Media say 3rd, Coaches 4th The Lady Bulldogs were picked to finish third in the SEC in balloting of league media, while conference coaches tabbed Georgia fourth in the pre-season. Both bodies named Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson first-team All-SEC. In addition, the coaches included Porsha Phillips as a second-team selection. Lady Bulldogs sign three Three premier prospects signed letters of intent to join the Lady Bulldogs in November. Arieal Johnson, a 6-5, forward, is a native of Havelock, N.C., who has played the past three seasons at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. She s ranked as the nation s No. 18 post prospect by both the All-Star Girls Report and Hoopgurlz. Ronika Ransford, a 5-7, guard from Washington, D.C., is ranked as high as the No. 11 overall prospect nationally by Peach State Hoops, and also is listed at No. 13 by Blue Star, No. 16 by the All-Star Girls Report, No. 21 by Hoopgurlz and No. 34 by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. Khaalidah Miller, a 5-9 guard from Douglass High School in Atlanta, is the highest ranked prospect in the state. She is at No. 33 by the All-Star Girls Report, No. 36 by Hoopgurlz, No. 40 by Blue Star, No. 42 by Peach State Hoops and No. 57 by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. That trio continue a recruiting resurgence for the Lady Bulldogs. Georgia s current freshman class featured four players who were ranked among the nation s top-50 prospects by one or more recruiting services. A coach s dream to date Nurturing development and improvement is perhaps the top goal of every coach at every level. That s why Andy Landers had a little extra spring in his step this fall, knowing this season offered him a coach s dream. You re challenged by the idea that you can get better every day, Landers said. This is a team that absolutely can improve every single game right up the end of the season because there s so many young people with so much to learn. You re not going to get it in a game. You re not going to get it in the first half of the season. It s going to be an ongoing process. We have to be as coaches good communicators with young people so that they know they understand what they are getting right and how to build on that and what needs to be corrected so that they can make those corrections.
