3 Lady Bulldog SEC Tournament Game Notes Page 3 On Feb. 10 this season, Jasmine Hassell posted her second consecutive double-double; however, LSU defeated No. 9 Georgia, 62-54, in Baton Rouge. Hassell scored a game-high 18 points and tied what was then her career high with 12 boards. The Lady Bulldogs trailed by six with 15:15 left before an 8-0 run that put Georgia up LSU responded much in the same fashion, with an 8-0 spurt that made it just 1:47 later. Georgia pulled within one or two points five times over the next 6:05 but never regained the lead. The Lady Bulldogs trailed with 1:47 remaining when a Theresa Plaisance jumper in the lane started a 9-2 LSU run over the final 1:33 to secure the upset. A box score from that contest Game 24 can be found in the box scores on Page 21 of these Game Notes. In the most recent SEC Tourney matchup in the 2005 semifinals, topseeded LSU pulled away late from fourth-seeded Georgia to win LSU led with 5:02 left before scoring the game s final 12 points largely due to going 8-of-8 from the line. Seimone Augustus scored 22 points and Tameka Johnson dished out 17 assists to lead the top-ranked Tigers. Tasha Humphrey s 33 points paced the Lady Bulldogs. Series history with the Tigers Georgia owns a lead in the all-time series with Auburn; however, the Tigers possess a 3-2 edge in SEC Tournament matchups. On Feb. 7, No. 9 Georgia used a win over Auburn to secure the 28th 20-win season in program history Jasmine Hassell s double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds led a quartet of double-digit scorers. Shacobia Barbee added 14 points, Jasmine James chipped in 13 and Khaalidah Miller scored 10. Quoting Coach Landers... On entering post-season play.. If you re a basketball enthusiast, it s probably the highlight of the year tournament time. We re obviously excited for a lot of reasons...not only it is tournament time but because we feel like we have a very good basketball team and one that is capable of winning basketball games at this time of year. On the parity in the SEC this season.. I think overall you can say that the Southeastern Conference has five of the top 15 teams in the country. That s going to make this weekend extremely competitive. But it doesn t stop there. I think all of those five teams have been beaten by someone else in our conference. There are a lot of teams in this league that I believe are separated by just a couple of points. It s the way its always been and it s tough. I think it s a great measure of a team s grit and their ability to focus. If you re going to play night in and night out, you have to be very focused and you have to be physically and mentally tough because it is a grind. The Lady Bulldogs used an 12-1 surge to go up 19-7 and another 9-0 run soon thereafter gave Georgia its largest lead of the game at Auburn whittled the lead to early in the second half and then tied the game twice, lastly at Georgia pulled ahead with 11 ticks left before the Tigers hit a long three with four seconds remaining. Barbee connected one of two free throws, and time ran out before Auburn could attempt a potential game-tying shot. A box score from that contest Game 23 can be found in the box scores on Page 21 of these Game Notes. The Lady Bulldogs last faced Auburn in the SEC Tourney in the 1997 quarterfinals, when the ninth-seeded Tigers upset top-seeded UGA, Auburn raced to an early 14-2 lead, led at halftime and held Georgia to its lowest scoring output of the year. Tiffany Krantz led four Tigers in double figures with 24 points, while Kedra Holland-Corn paced UGA with 11. Staff associations with either foe There will be close associations with the opposing staff whether Georgia plays LSU or Auburn on Friday evening. Georgia associate head coach Joni Crenshaw was an assistant coach at LSU during the season. Lady Bulldog graduate assistant manager Katherine Graham played for the Lady Tigers from She is the only player in LSU history to record a triple-double in SEC play and was a member of the SEC s All-Defensive team in At Auburn, first-year head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy was an assistant coach on Andy Landers staff for six seasons from During that span, UGA made six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including reaching the 1999 Final Four. Georgia also won the 1997 and 2000 SEC Championship and the 2001 SEC Tournament. Former Lady Bulldog Sherill Baker also known as the Queen of Thieves is Auburn s Director of Basketball Services. Baker started 122 of 131 games played from and tallied 1,665 points, which is No. 10 alltime at UGA. Baker scored many of those points in the same fashion...with steals and layups. She holds UGA and SEC singleseason and career records for takeaways with 149 and 426, respectively. In addition, former Lady Bulldog graduate assistant manager Danielle Bell is the Tigers Director of Basketball Operations. She spent the previous two seasons in Athens after playing for former UGA associate head coach Michael Shafer at Richmond. Landers earns win No. 900 Georgia s victory at Ole Miss on Feb. 24 represented the 900th win in Andy Landers career as a collegiate head coach. Landers became just the fourth women s coach to reach that milestone, joining Pat Summitt, Jody Conradt and Sylvia Hatchell. C. Vivian Stringer became the fifth coach to secure 900 wins two days after Landers did so as outlined below. Landers collected 82 Ws in four seasons at Roane State College from before becoming Georgia s first and still only full-time women s basketball head coach as a 26 year old on April 24, Now in his 34th season in Athens, Landers has 819 wins at UGA. winningest active coaches (through games March 5) Rk. Our take on Landers career As Andy Landers approached his 900th career win, the question came much more frequently. Hey, the NCAA Records Book says that Andy Landers only had 795 career victories entering the season. What gives? The University of Georgia politely disagrees with the NCAA on what constitutes Landers career record as a collegiate head coach. Prior to arriving in Athens, Landers was in four seasons at Roane State, a junior college in Harriman, Tenn. UGA chooses and has since 1979 to include Landers Roane results in his record as a collegiate head coach. The NCAA does not recognize Landers wins at Roane because it is not a four-year institution. Therefore, the NCAA lists Landers career record as only his coaching efforts at Georgia. Hassell finishing career strong Jasmine Hassell has played the best basketball of her career of late. After recording four double-doubles in her first 121 games as a Lady Bulldog, Hassell has notched four more in Georgia s last seven regularseason games. career SEC Tournament Stats No. Name G-GS FGs Pct. 3FGs Pct. Barbee earns SEC honor Shacobia Barbee was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 25, a day after scoring 13 points at Ole Miss. Barbee averaged 8.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals in a pair of victories over Arkansas and Ole Miss. Barbee s scoring average was 2.5 ppg higher than her average entering the week. Barbee dished a game-high six assists in a victory over the Razorbacks. That tally also matched Barbee s season high for assists set against both TCU and Mercer. She then scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor at Ole Miss and also had a game-high four steals against the Rebels. Ten Lady Bulldogs have captured SEC Freshman of the Week honors 21 times since the award s inception in Barbee joined teammates Krista Donald, Erika Ford, Jasmine Hassell, Jasmine James and Khaalidah Miller as SEC Freshman of the week honorees. Playing time being distributed A year ago, six Lady Bulldogs averaged between 20.0 and 34.5 minutes of playing time per game. 7 Lady Bulldog SEC Tournament Game Notes Page 7 A milestone in the making Anne Marie Armstrong could become the third Georgia senior to reach the 1,000 career points. She would join Jasmine James and Jasmine Hassell and make them the second trio of UGA classmates to top 1,000. James scored her 1000th point late last season at South Carolina and Hassell did so this season against Savannah State on Nov. 20. The only three classmates to top 1,000 points at UGA to date are the Class of 1997 s La Keshia Frett (1,850 points), Tracy Henderson (1,764) and Kedra Holland-Corn (1,566). Freshmen garnering PT Georgia s freshmen have logged major PT from the get-go this season, contributing 49 minutes against Rutgers in the season opener. All told, Freshmen have played 1,950 minutes, accounting for 33.6 percent of the Lady Bulldogs total playing time, a mark that would be higher if Merritt Hempe had not missed four games with a foot injury. Double-digit deficit...no problem A Feb. 17 rally from a 12-point deficit at Florida marked the third time in SEC play that Georgia has trailed by double digits on the road but come back to win. At Arkansas on Jan. 17, the Lady Bulldogs fell behind by 15 points in the first half and were down by 13 in the second stanza before outscoring the Razorbacks over the final 15:51. No. 8 Kentucky led by 13 points in each half in Lexington on Feb. 3. The Lady Bulldogs trailed with 6:04 left before outscoring the Wildcats 16-4 down the stretch The Lady Bulldogs were down with 8:18 left in the first half in Gainesville before a 12-0 run leveled the scoreboard 5:23 later. McCLAIN JOINS NAISMITH HALL Katrina McClain, Georgia Basketball s first National of the Year and a threetime U.S. Olympian, was officially enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame during ceremonies in Springfield, Mass., on Sept. 7. I had a great people in my life who helped me along the way, McClain said. Coach Landers. Wow. What can I say? I remember when he was recruiting me, Coach Landers told me I could be the greatest player in the world. He also told me if I wanted easy don t come to Georgia. He helped me really realize that you had to go out there and work hard. Coach helped us all understand that education came first. He stressed that, that we were there to get an education. And if we didn t get that, we didn t get to play. Still today, I can pick up the phone and call Coach Landers and we ll spend and hour on the phone, McClain continued. The only thing I didn t get when I was at Georgia was a national championship. I still hope that Coach Landers gets that national championship. Coach, I still pray that you get that national championship. McClain was among a dozen inductees including Reggie Miller and Ralph Sampson. When you have the God-given ability and put forth the blood, sweat and tears that Katrina McClain did, you re destined to do great things, Landers said. She s achieved a lot of wonderful accomplishments at Georgia and internationally and professionally but none any greater than her induction tonight. McClain s collegiate career provided the winningest four-year span in Lady Bulldog history. Georgia was from through and finished as 1985 NCAA runners-up and as 1984 and 1986 SEC Champions. I think of Georgia being the bulk of my career, McClain said on the red carpet entering the Symphony Hall. Of all I learned about basketball, I think learned the most from Coach Landers. Everyone in Athens from my teammates to the coaches to the academic staff like Glada (Horvat) who worked with us on our academics and helped us realize that our education was what was tops means so much to me. 20 wins...once again The Lady Bulldogs secured their 28th 20-win campaign during Andy Landers 34 seasons at the University of Georgia with their Feb. 7 victory over Auburn. 8 Page 8 Lady Bulldog SEC Tournament Game Notes Georgia s senior class has now notched four 20-win efforts and the Lady Bulldogs have reached that marker during 10 of the past 11 seasons. Landers tally ranks fifth all-time among Division I head coaches...and third among active head coaches. Pat Summitt tops that ledger with 36 followed by C. Vivian Stringer (32) and both Jody Conradt (29) and Sylvia Hatchell (29th this season). Miller, Hassell earn SEC accolades Jasmine Hassell and Khaalidah Miller were tabbed as SEC of the Week on Jan. 14 and Feb. 4, respectively. Hassell was honored after averaging 20.0 points in wins over No. 18 South Carolina and Alabama. For the week, she made 15-of-22 (.682) of her shots from the floor and 10-of-12 (.833) of her trips to the line. Hassell scored 21 points against the Tide in Tuscaloosa, then a career high against SEC competition. She then scored 19 points versus the Gamecocks, accounting for 45 percent of UGA s total offense in the win. Miller averaged 18.0 points in victories over Alabama and No. 8 Kentucky while hitting 52.6 percent of her FGs, 42.9 percent of her three-point attempts and 90.0 percent of her free throws. Miller scored a team-high 11 points and collected a game-high four steals against Alabama on Jan. 31. On Feb. 3, she scored a career-high points 25 as the Lady Bulldogs snapped Kentucky s 34-game home winning streak. Hassell and Miller are the 23rd and 24th different Lady Bulldogs to win SEC of the Week honors since its inception in Those players a list which also includes current Lady Bulldogs Anne Marie Armstrong and Jasmine James have combined to win the SEC accolade 45 times. Lady Dogs do starting lineup shuffle Nine different Lady Bulldogs have been utilized to comprise seven variations of a starting five this season. Jasmine Hassell and Jasmine James are the only two to get the nod for every game, while Shacobia Barbee has started all but one (at Georgia Tech). Versus Alabama in Athens, freshmen Barbee, Tiaria Griffin and Merritt Hempe all started. That marked the first time UGA s starters featured a trio of freshmen since Ashley Houts, Christy Marshall and Angel Robinson did so against Brown at the Surf N Slam Classic in San Diego on Dec. 30, Lady Bulldogs post 850th W A Jan. 31 victory over Alabama represented the 850th in 40 seasons of Lady Bulldog Basketball. UGA became the 10th Division I women s hoops program to reach 850 victories. Georgia has been consistently ascending the ledger of the game s winningest programs. The Lady Bulldogs were the 22nd team to post 500 wins on Dec. 1, 1998; the 17th school to 600 victories on Feb ; the 15th program to post 700 Ws on Nov. 29, 2006; and the 10th to notch 800 wins on Jan. 13, Lady Bulldogs hit magic number Georgia has furthered one of the greatest statistical indicators in any sport six times this season. The Lady Bulldogs put up 80 or more points in wins over Savannah State, St. Bonaventure, Furman, Mercer, Lipscomb and Alabama to improve to when reaching the 80-point plateau under Andy Landers. That converts to an almost unfathomable winning percentage of It also highlights the Lady Bulldogs have hit that mark in more than half of Landers 819 victories at UGA. Diversity training: Ways to Win It would be hard to fathom securing wins in more varied fashions than UGA did in back-to-back January wins. On Jan. 10, Georgia outscored Alabama, 95-83, UGA s most points scored and points allowed this season. It also UGA s best output in SEC play in almost a decade...since a win at Florida on Jan. 12, On Jan. 13, Georgia outlasted South Carolina, 42-40, in what amounted to the fewest points scored in a win in the history of Lady Bulldog Basketball. The previous low stood for four days shy of 39 years. In its inaugural season of intercollegiate women s basketball, UGA earned a win over DeKalb College on Jan. 17, That was the program s firstever win and lasted as the lowest output in a victory for 1,199 games. Of starts and streaks... The Lady Bulldogs 12-0 start equaled their fifth-best ever and represented the 19th double-digit win streak in the program s history. The 12-0 opening matched the beginning of Georgia s 1995 Final Four campaign among best starts and also tied the 12th-best overall streak shared with the aforementioned team and also during the season. Freshman starter sorority grows Andy Landers penchant for starting freshmen has continued this season. In the first six games, three freshmen started. Against Rutgers, Shacobia Barbee became the 70th freshman to start during Landers 34 seasons in Athens...and the 22nd to get the nod for her collegiate debut. Shortly thereafter, Merritt Hempe and Tiaria Griffin became the 71st and 72nd first-year players to start when they did so against S.C. State and St. Bonaventure, respectively. Nine current Lady Bulldogs started as freshmen Anne Marie Armstrong, Barbee, Krista Donald, Erika Ford, Griffin, Jasmine Hassell, Hempe, Jasmine James and Khaalidah Miller. Landers wins 800th at UGA The Lady Bulldogs Nov. 20 victory over Savannah State represented Andy Landers 800th win at UGA. That placed him on a list with some of the greatest coaches ever.
