WISCONSIN MAKING 'NET' GAINS Wisconsin is ranked 6th in the latest NCAA NET rankings (NCAA tournament selection committee metric that replaced RPI) due in large part to the Badgers' record against a tough early-season schedule: So far, the Badgers have faced teams in the top 75 of the NET rankings in 5 of their 8 games. The Badgers are 4-1 in those contests: #1 Virginia (neutral-site loss) #10 Iowa (road win) #21 Oklahoma (neutral-site win) #35 NC State (home win) #64 Xavier (road win) Wisconsin has 4 wins over Quadrant 1 and 2 teams, equaling Duke and Gonzaga for the most in the country: Most NET Quadrant 1 & 2 Wins, NCAA Wins - Team 4 Duke 4 Gonzaga 4 Wisconsin 3 Auburn 3 Creighton Wins - Team 3 Florida St 3 Iowa 3 Kansas 3 Texas Tech 3 Virginia TRACKING THE BADGERS UW's early-season success also has them highly rated in a variety of other rankings: No. 8 in ESPN BPI No. 10 in KenPom No. 22 in AP Top 25 (as Nov. 24) No. 22 in Coaches Poll (as Nov. 24) Wins over Iowa (Big Ten), Oklahoma (Big 12), NC State (ACC), Xavier (Big East) and Stanford (Pac-12) give the Badgers 5 wins over major-conference teams, equaling Gonzaga for the most in the nation: Most Major Conf. The Badgers have won 7 of their last 8 Big Ten road openers and 3 of their last 4 trips to Iowa City. Trailing with 2:00 remaining, the Badgers made their final 3 shots on triples from Brevin Pritzl and D'Mitrik Trice and a basketball by Ethan Happ. UW also went 4-for-4 at the FT line over the final 2:00. The Badgers have had a better FG% than their opponents in all 8 games and haven't allowed a team to shoot over 48% in any game.

4 HAPP'S STAT STUFFING 17.4 ppg We watched film, we game planned, but Ethan Happ did what All-Americans do: made plays, got his teammates involved and made shots. Josh Gasser is the only other Badger to record a triple-double (at Northwestern, 2011). It's the B1G's first triple-double since OSU's JaQuan Lyle in Happ's career-high 12 assists equaled the 3rd-highest total in school history and the most since Mike Kelley had 12 vs. Maryland in The NCAA's last player 6-10 or taller to record a triple-double with points, rebounds and assists was Northwestern's Evan Eschmeyer (27p, 14r, 10a vs. Indiana in 1999). Happ is the NCAA's first player to post at least 10p, 11r, 11a and 4b since Dwyane Wade in the 2003 Elite Eight vs. Kentucky (20p, 11r, 11a, 4b). HAPP OFF TO ALL AMERICAN START Senior Ethan Happ opened the season as just the 4th preseason AP All-American in UW history. However, early in the season, he s playing like a postseason All-American. Averaging 17.4 points, 11.6 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game, Happ is the nation's only player averaging at least 17.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg and 5.0 apg. Over the last 20 years, no player in the nation has reached those marks for a full season. Happ is tied for the NCAA lead with 7 double-double (in 8 games) this season and tallied at least 10+ points, 10+ rebounds and 5+ assists in 5 of 8 games. No other player in the country has more than 3 such games. Happ ranks 8th in the Big Ten in scoring, 2nd in rebounding, 3rd in assists, 4th in blocks and 7th in FG Pct. Happ posted a triple-double in UW's opener vs. Coppin St. and followed that up with a 30-point, 13-rebound masterpiece in UW s win at Xavier. Happ's 30-point performance at Xavier trails only his 32-point effort in 2017 against Rutgers in MSG. With 22p, 15r, 6a and 4b against Virginia, Happ became first major conference player to post those numbers since Georgetown's Michael Sweetney in Overall, the last player to hit those marks was Oakland's Keith Benson (2010). Happ was named to the Battle 4 Atlantis All-Tournament team, averaging 17.3 ppg, 13.0 rpg, 3.7 apg and 2.0 bpg over the 3-game series. With double-doubles in each of his first 7 games this season, Happ now has 38 in his career, ranking third at UW behind only Joe Franklin (47 from ) and Kim Hughes (39 from ). He is the 7th Badger with multiple games of 30+ points since 1995, joining Devin Harris (3), Nigel Hayes (3), Frank Kaminsky (2), Kirk Penney (2), Jordan Taylor (2) and Alando Tucker (2). HAPP ENTERING RARE AIR Ethan Happ is putting together one of the greatest careers in Big Ten annals (more on page 10). Happ needs just 32 rebounds to become the 14th player in Big Ten history to grab 1,000 rebounds. Happ can become the conference's first to accomplish this hallowed mark since MSU's Draymond Green (1,096 from ). Trice ranks 8th in the Big Ten averaging 17.4 ppg, an increase of 8.0 ppg from last year's injury-shortened average of 9.4 ppg. Trice leads the Big Ten, shooting 58.3% from 3-point range, hitting 28-of-48. He is also 3rd in the conference in made triples, trailing only Purdue's Ryan Cline (31) & Carson Edwards (29). From 3-point range this season, Trice has already had a 5-for-5 game at Xavier, 7-for-8 vs. Oklahoma, 4-for-5 vs. NC State and 4-for-8 at Iowa. For his career, Trice is shooting 43.6% from 3-point range, hitting 78-of-179. Trice entered the season with a career high of 16 points against Oklahoma as a freshman in Through 8 games this season, he has already topped that figure 5 times. Trice opened the season with 21 points against Coppin State and 22 points at Xavier. He then poured in 25 points in the Bahamas against Oklahoma, scored 18 vs. NC State and tallied 20 at Iowa. After assuming the head coaching reins on Dec. 15, 2015, Gard promptly led the team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons at the helm and will begin his fourth season as the head coach of the Badgers in Initially an interim head coach, Gard proved quickly he was worthy of the head coaching position and was officially named as such on March 7, In three seasons, he owns the third-highest winning percentage in UW history, piloting the Badgers to a record of (.613). In his first two seasons with the head coaching title, Gard maintained a level of success that has become synonymous with Wisconsin Basketball. In his inaugural season as head coach, Gard led the Badgers to the 2016 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, becoming just the second-ever first-year coach to win the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award. He followed that up by leading UW to the fifth-highest single-season win total in school history (27-10) and making a second-consecutive visit to the Sweet 16. Gard is just the third coach in the last 20 years to pilot his team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons, joining UCLA s Steve Lavin ( ) and Gonzaga s Mark Few ( ). Wisconsin maintained its place among the top of the Big Ten during the transition to Gard as well. In his first season, the Badgers finished the regular season in a tie for third place in the Big Ten standings extending its streak of top-four finishes to a league-record 16th-consecutive season with a 12-6 conference record. Gard led the Badgers to the most Big Ten wins by a first-year coach since 2004 (Bruce Weber, Illinois). Gard s Badgers would follow that up with another 12-6 conference campaign in 2017, finishing second in both the regular season and the Big Ten tournament. Wisconsin would cap off its 27-win season with a signature win in the NCAA tournament, knocking off the nation s No. 1 team Villanova, 65-62, to advance to the Sweet 16. Gard s first two seasons as head coach at Wisconsin continued a trend of lofty academic success, placing 15 players on the Academic All-Big Ten list. Over his 17 years in Madison, UW has boasted a total of 63 Academic All-Big Ten honors, trailing only Purdue and Northwestern over that span. Long considered one of the top assistant coaches in the game, Gard served as an assistant at Wisconsin for 14-plus seasons, including the final seven as the associate head coach. In 2015, Gard was ranked as the fourth-best X&O assistant coach in college basketball by coachstat.net. In 2012, Gard was named No. 3 on the list of top assistant coaches in college basketball according to Bleacher Report. FOX Sports also listed Gard No. 10 on its list of the nation s top 25 assistant coaches. Prior to coming to Wisconsin in 2001, Gard spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at UW-Milwaukee and served as an assistant coach at UW-Platteville from Prior to joining Ryan s staff in Platteville, Gard spent three seasons at Southwestern High School and one at Platteville High School, where he served in junior high and assistant varsity coaching capacities. In 2016, Gard and his wife, Michelle, partnered with the University of the Wisconsin and Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association, to launch Garding Against Cancer. This fundraising initiative raises funds and awareness for cancer research and care within the state of Wisconsin. In its first two years of hosting fundraising events across the state, GAC raised more than $2 million dollars in the fight against cancer. Gard is a 1995 graduate of UW-Platteville with a degree in physical and health education. He received a master s degree in counselor education from Platteville in Gard and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Mackenzie and Peyton, and a son, Isaac. GARD YEAR BY YEAR GAME 9: VS.
