4 HAPP'S STAT STUFFING 19.2 ppg Ethan Happ is a handful. He s one of the truly great players in college basketball. And I hope fans of Wisconsin appreciate him because guys like that don t come around very often. Has scored in double figures in 37 consecutive games, including 34 points at Marquette (12/8) and 30 points at Xavier (11/13) this season. Josh Gasser is the only other Badger to record a triple-double (at Northwestern, 2011). It's the B1G's first triple-double since OSU's JaQuan Lyle in Happ's career-high 12 assists equaled the 3rd-highest total in school history and the most since Mike Kelley had 12 vs. Maryland in The NCAA's last player 6-10 or taller to record a triple-double with points, rebounds and assists was Northwestern's Evan Eschmeyer (27p, 14r, 10a vs. Indiana in 1999). Happ is the NCAA's first player to post at least 10p, 11r, 11a and 4b since Dwyane Wade in the 2003 Elite Eight vs. Kentucky (20p, 11r, 11a, 4b). Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski (Dec. 4, 2018) HAPP OFF TO ALL AMERICAN START Senior Ethan Happ opened the season as just the 4th preseason AP All-American in UW history. However, early in the season, he s playing like a postseason All-American. Averaging 19.2 points, 10.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game, Happ is the nation's only player averaging at least 17.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg and 4.0 apg. In fact, over the last 20 years, LSU's First-Team All- American Ben Simmons (19.2 ppg, 11.8 rpg, 4.8 apg in ) is the NCAA's only player to reach those marks for an entire season. Happ ranks 3rd in the Big Ten in scoring, 2nd in rebounding, 4th in assists, 12th in blocks, 10th in FG Pct and 9th with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio. Happ ranks 2nd in the NCAA with 10 double-double (in 13 games) this season and has tallied at least 10+ points, 10+ rebounds and 5+ assists in 6 of 13 games. No other player in the country has more than 4 such games. Happ ranks 2nd in UW history with 41 double-doubles, trailing only Joe Franklin (47 from ). In addition to his triple-double in the season-opener vs. Coppin State, Happ has topped 30 points twice this season: 30 points at Xavier and 34 points at Marquette. Happ's career-high 34 points at MU came on 16-of-21 shooting, posting the nation's highest FG% for players attempting at least 20 FGAs this season. With 22p, 15r, 6a and 4b against Virginia, Happ became first major conference player to post those numbers since Georgetown's Michael Sweetney in Overall, the last player with those marks was Oakland's Keith Benson (2010). A four-time Big Ten Player of the Week winner this season, Happ was also named to the Battle 4 Atlantis All- Tournament team, averaging 17.3 ppg, 13.0 rpg, 3.7 apg and 2.0 bpg over the 3-game series. Happ is the 3rd Badger with multiple games of 30+ points since 1995, joining Devin Harris (3) and Nigel Hayes (3). HAPP IN RARE AIR Ethan Happ is putting together one of the greatest careers in Big Ten annals (more on page 10). With 1,014 career rebounds, Happ is just the 15th player in Big Ten history to grab 1,000 boards. After assuming the head coaching reins on Dec. 15, 2015, Gard promptly led the team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons at the helm and will begin his fourth season as the head coach of the Badgers in Initially an interim head coach, Gard proved quickly he was worthy of the head coaching position and was officially named as such on March 7, In three seasons, he owns the third-highest winning percentage in UW history, piloting the Badgers to a record of (.613). In his first two seasons with the head coaching title, Gard maintained a level of success that has become synonymous with Wisconsin Basketball. In his inaugural season as head coach, Gard led the Badgers to the 2016 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, becoming just the second-ever first-year coach to win the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award. He followed that up by leading UW to the fifth-highest single-season win total in school history (27-10) and making a second-consecutive visit to the Sweet 16. Gard is just the third coach in the last 20 years to pilot his team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons, joining UCLA s Steve Lavin ( ) and Gonzaga s Mark Few ( ). Wisconsin maintained its place among the top of the Big Ten during the transition to Gard as well. In his first season, the Badgers finished the regular season in a tie for third place in the Big Ten standings extending its streak of top-four finishes to a league-record 16th-consecutive season with a 12-6 conference record. Gard led the Badgers to the most Big Ten wins by a first-year coach since 2004 (Bruce Weber, Illinois). Gard s Badgers would post another 12-6 conference campaign in 2017, finishing second in both the regular season and the Big Ten tournament. Wisconsin would cap off its 27-win season with a signature win in the NCAA tournament, knocking off the nation s No. 1 team Villanova, 65-62, to advance to the Sweet 16. Gard s first two seasons as head coach at Wisconsin continued a trend of lofty academic success, placing 15 players on the Academic All-Big Ten list. Over his 17 years in Madison, UW has boasted a total of 63 Academic All-Big Ten honors, trailing only Purdue and Northwestern over that span. Long considered one of the top assistant coaches in the game, Gard served as an assistant at Wisconsin for 14-plus seasons, including the final seven as the associate head coach. In 2015, Gard was ranked as the fourth-best X&O assistant coach in college basketball by coachstat.net. In 2012, Gard was named No. 3 on the list of top assistant coaches in college basketball according to Bleacher Report. FOX Sports also listed Gard No. 10 on its list of the nation s top 25 assistant coaches. Prior to coming to Wisconsin in 2001, Gard spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at UW-Milwaukee and served as an assistant coach at UW-Platteville from Prior to joining Ryan s staff in Platteville, Gard spent three seasons at Southwestern High School and one at Platteville High School, where he served in junior high and assistant varsity coaching capacities. In 2016, Gard and his wife, Michelle, partnered with the University of the Wisconsin and Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association, to launch Garding Against Cancer. This fundraising initiative raises funds and awareness for cancer research and care within the state of Wisconsin. In its first two years of hosting fundraising events across the state, GAC raised more than $2 million dollars in the fight against cancer. Gard is a 1995 graduate of UW-Platteville with a degree in physical and health education. He received a master s degree in counselor education from Platteville in Gard and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Mackenzie and Peyton, and a son, Isaac. GARD YEAR BY YEAR GAME 14: VS.
