Including Friday's win over South Carolina State, Wisconsin has won 15 of its last 16 season openers dating back to The lone loss came in a setback to Western Illinois in the debut. The Badgers shot 57.1% from the field vs. SCSU, which would have been the 2nd-highest mark of last season (58.2% at Marq., 12/10/16). UW connected on 10 3-pointers, shooting 43.5% (10-for-23) from deep. The Badgers averaged 7.5 3FGs per game and 35.9% in ' Junior Ethan Happ led UW with 20 points (8-11 FGs) and 11 rebounds, the 20th doubledouble of his career. This also marked the 5th time Happ has gone for 20p and 10r in a game. In his first career start, junior Andy Van Vliet tallied career highs with 18 points and 8 rebounds. In fact, Van Vliet matched his career point total (18) in Friday's opener. Van Vliet entered the game with 3 career 3-point field goals, and went 4-for-5 on 3FGs on Friday. Happ was the only player in the NCAA to average at least 13.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.5 spg and 1.0 bpg. In fact, Happ was the first major conference player in over 20 years to reach those marks for an entire season. Vermont's Marqus Blakely (2009 & 10) is the only other D-I player to hit those marks since at least Happ was the nation's only player to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals during conference play. 7 GAME 2: VS. YALE HEAD COACH GREG GARD A coaching veteran of more than 20 years, Greg Gard has expertly made the jump from assistant coach to head coach at Wisconsin. A er assuming the head coaching reins on Dec. 15, 2015, Gard will begin his third season as the head coach of the Badgers in on the heels of leading the team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons at the helm. A er ini ally taking over on an interim basis, Gard was officially named head coach of the Badgers on March 7, In two seasons, he has piloted the Badgers to a record of (.700), owning the second-best 60-game start in program history. In his first two seasons with the head coaching tle, Gard has maintained a level of success that has become synonymous with Wisconsin Basketball.
