Overall, the Badgers have won 14 straight over Illinois. Up next, UW travels to Northwestern on Feb. 23. UW has won 6 of its last 7 games at Northwestern. KEY NOTES TO CONSIDER Wisconsin checked in at No. 15 in the Feb. 15 NET rankings and No. 11 according to KenPom.com. The Badgers are 1 of just 7 teams with 7 Quadrant 1 wins (page 3). The Badgers have played the 3rd-toughest schedule in the NCAA (per KenPom.com). During its recent 6-game winning streak, UW held 5 of those opponents to a season-low scoring total. Overall, the Badgers rank 5th in defensive efficiency (KenPom.com) and 10th in the NCAA allowing 61.3 ppg. With the recent win over No. 2 Michigan, Greg Gard has now led the Badgers to 4 top-5 wins (and 7 top-10 wins) in his 4 seasons at the helm most in the Big Ten. UW is ed for the NCAA lead with 9.2 TOs per game. The Badgers have had single-digit TOs in 9 of 14 Big Ten games. As Michigan's John Beilein said, Ethan Happ is playing like a postseason All-American. Happ is the No. 2 player in Ken Pomeroy's Player of the Year rankings and is trying to become the NCAA's first player in over 25 years and the first in Big Ten history to average 15 ppg, 10 rpg and 5 apg. (Pages 4-5) Happ is the only player in the NCAA with 2 triple-doubles this season. He is 1 of only 5 major conference players in the last 10 years to post multiple triple-doubles in a season. In his 4th season as head coach, Greg Gard has led the Badgers to a mark of (.627), the 3rd-highest win percentage at UW (min. 60 games). Wisconsin has 6 true road wins this season 1 of 9 major conference schools with at least 6. Among Big Ten teams, only Michigan State (7) has more. Since when Bo Ryan and Greg Gard got to Madison, Wisconsin owns the best Big Ten win pct in the conference, pos ng a mark of (.688). UW ranks 1st in the B1G and 11th nationally, shooting 39.1% on 3FGs. The Badgers are on pace for their best 3-point mark since shooting 42.6% in D'Mitrik Trice (44.2%), Brad Davison (41.7%) and Reuvers (39.7%) all rank among the B1G top 20. Davison is finding his comfort zone. Over the last 15 games, he is averaging 13.1 ppg and shooting 33-for-68 (48.5%) from deep. That includes a trio of 20-plus point games. 5 GAME 26: VS. ILLINOIS WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT ETHAN HAPP Ethan Happ is not a preseason All-American, he's a postseason All- American. He's tremendous. He's just a difficult matchup. Michigan head coach John Beilein (Jan. 19, 2019) I ve never seen one player do more for one team. I ve never seen it. When he s in the game he just occupies so much. He s about as unstoppable as it gets. Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino (Feb. 6, 2019) He is a phenomenal player and he impacts winning in so many ways and I've been a huge fan and watched him for these past 4-5 years. It's a nightmare playing against him but I love how he plays, he's just a winner. Northwestern head coach Chris Collins (Jan. 26, 2019) You re talking about arguably one of the top five players in college basketball and maybe one of the all-time greats to play at Wisconsin. Illinois head coach Brad Underwood (Jan. 23, 2019) He is clever and he is so fast for a big guy probably the fastest big we've played all year. He is so crafty with the ball and he is such a good passer. He's just a tough cover and I'm glad we don't have to play him again. Purdue head coach Matt Painter (Jan. 11, 2019) Ethan Happ is one of the truly great players in college basketball. I hope fans of Wisconsin appreciate him because guys like that don t come around often. Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski (Dec. 8, 2018) We watched film, we game planned, but Ethan Happ did what All-Americans do: made plays, got his teammates involved and made shots. Over the last 15 games, Davison is averaging 13.1 ppg, including games of 24 points vs. Savannah State and 26 at Western Kentucky. He is shooting 33-for-68 (48.5%) over that span. After assuming the head coaching reins on Dec. 15, 2015, Gard promptly led the team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons at the helm and will begin his fourth season as the head coach of the Badgers in Initially an interim head coach, Gard proved quickly he was worthy of the head coaching position and was officially named as such on March 7, In three seasons, he owns the third-highest winning percentage in UW history, piloting the Badgers to a record of (.613). In his first two seasons with the head coaching title, Gard maintained a level of success that has become synonymous with Wisconsin Basketball. In his inaugural season as head coach, Gard led the Badgers to the 2016 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, becoming just the second-ever first-year coach to win the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award. He followed that up by leading UW to the fifth-highest single-season win total in school history (27-10) and making a second-consecutive visit to the Sweet 16. Gard is just the third coach in the last 20 years to pilot his team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons, joining UCLA s Steve Lavin ( ) and Gonzaga s Mark Few ( ). Wisconsin maintained its place among the top of the Big Ten during the transition to Gard as well. In his first season, the Badgers finished the regular season in a tie for third place in the Big Ten standings extending its streak of top-four finishes to a league-record 16th-consecutive season with a 12-6 conference record. Gard led the Badgers to the most Big Ten wins by a first-year coach since 2004 (Bruce Weber, Illinois). Gard s Badgers would post another 12-6 conference campaign in 2017, finishing second in both the regular season and the Big Ten tournament. Wisconsin would cap off its 27-win season with a signature win in the NCAA tournament, knocking off the nation s No. 1 team Villanova, 65-62, to advance to the Sweet 16. Gard s first two seasons as head coach at Wisconsin continued a trend of lofty academic success, placing 15 players on the Academic All-Big Ten list. Over his 17 years in Madison, UW has boasted a total of 63 Academic All-Big Ten honors, trailing only Purdue and Northwestern over that span. Long considered one of the top assistant coaches in the game, Gard served as an assistant at Wisconsin for 14-plus seasons, including the final seven as the associate head coach. In 2015, Gard was ranked as the fourth-best X&O assistant coach in college basketball by coachstat.net. In 2012, Gard was named No. 3 on the list of top assistant coaches in college basketball according to Bleacher Report. FOX Sports also listed Gard No. 10 on its list of the nation s top 25 assistant coaches. Prior to coming to Wisconsin in 2001, Gard spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at UW-Milwaukee and served as an assistant coach at UW-Platteville from Prior to joining Ryan s staff in Platteville, Gard spent three seasons at Southwestern High School and one at Platteville High School, where he served in junior high and assistant varsity coaching capacities. In 2016, Gard and his wife, Michelle, partnered with the University of the Wisconsin and Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association, to launch Garding Against Cancer. This fundraising initiative raises funds and awareness for cancer research and care within the state of Wisconsin. In its first two years of hosting fundraising events across the state, GAC raised more than $2 million dollars in the fight against cancer. Gard is a 1995 graduate of UW-Platteville with a degree in physical and health education.
