XAVIER ROUND THREE The Badgers hit the road for the first time in and will face a familiar foe on Nov. 13 when they take on Xavier as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games. UW and XU have split a pair of recent meetings with the Badgers earning a win in the 2016 NCAA Tournament and the Musketeers winning in Madison, 80-70, last season. Up next, Wisconsin returns home for one game against Houston Baptist on Nov. 17 before traveling to the Bahamas for three games at the 2018 Battle 4 Atlantis. KEY NOTES TO CONSIDER Wisconsin begins its 121st season of men s basketball in and the fourth under head coach Greg Gard. As head coach, Gard has led the Badgers to a mark of (.617) overall in his first 4 seasons, the 3rd-highest win percentage in program history (min. 60 games). Wisconsin returns 94.9% (2,094 of 2,206 points) of its scoring in , the 6thhighest mark in all of college basketball. Washington (95.9%) is the only major conference school with a higher percentage of returning points than Wisconsin. The Badgers also bring back 92.6% of their minutes played (6,136 of 6,625). In Tuesday's win over Coppin State, senior Ethan Happ recorded just the 2nd triple-double in school history, posting 10 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists (page 4). Preseason AP All-American Ethan Happ continues his assault on the UW record books. He currently ranks 7th in UW history in points (1,551), 2nd in rebounds (886), 14th in assists (282), 6th in blocks (114) and 3rd in steals (179) - more on page 7. UW welcomes back a pair of players who missed the final 23 games of last season with injury: sophomore guard D'Mitrik Trice (foot) and redshirt freshman guard Kobe King (knee). In Tuesday's season-opening win, Trice led all scorers with a career-high 21 points (5-9 3FGs) and King added 8 points and 4 rebounds off the bench. The Badgers demonstrated their improved depth in the opener as the UW bench combined for 30 points, including 16 from junior Brevin Pritzl. Last season, UW never had more than 25 bench points in any game and only topped 20 points twice in the final 18 games. In 4 seasons under Greg Gard, Wisconsin has a total of 6 wins over teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll, going 6-7 in such games. Among Big Ten teams in that era, the Badgers own the 2nd-highest such win total and win percentage (Michigan 7-7,.500). The Badgers look to return to their usual place in the postseason in Wisconsin is 1 of just 5 teams to participate in at least 19 of the last 20 NCAA tournaments, joining Duke, Kansas, Michigan State and Gonzaga. XAVIER Tuesday's game will mark the 7th all-time meeting between Wisconsin and Xavier in a series that dates back to The Badgers and Musketeers are deadlocked at 3-3 in the all-time series. The two teams have split a pair of meetings in Cincinnati with UW claiming a win in 1938 and Xavier claiming a win in 2001, Greg Gard's first year as an assistant coach at Wisconsin under first-year head coach Bo Ryan. Tuesday will serve as a rubber match for a pair of recent meetings between UW and XU. The first of the 2 recent clashes came in one of the greatest games of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. In that thriller in St. Louis, UW trailed by 9 with 6:00 left, but stormed back to pull off a win in the second round of the Big Dance. Bronson Koenig hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 14 seconds -- including the gamewinner on a fadeaway 3 from the corner as the final buzzer sounded. The other meeting came in an Xavier win in Madison last season (details at right). A total of 4 current Badgers appeared in the 2016 meeting with Xavier. Then-freshman Ethan Happ posted 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Alex Illikainen (2 points), Khalil Iverson (2 points), and Charles Thomas (0 points) combined to play 26 minutes off the bench. In 2 career games against Xavier, Ethan Happ has averaged 19.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 4.5 apg, going 14-for-23 (60.9%) from the field and 11-for-15 (73.3%) at the FT line. The Badgers used a 22-2 first-half run to blow the game open. UW held CSU scoreless for a span of 6:59 during that span. Senior Ethan Happ recorded the second tripledouble in school history with 10 points (4-4 FTs), 11 rebounds and 12 assists. Sophomore D'Mitrik Trice saw his first action since Dec. 6, 2017 and led all scorers with a career-high 21 points, going 5-for-9 on 3s. Junior Brevin Pritzl chipped in 16 points, going 4-for-7 from long range. Redshirt freshman Kobe King also played for the first time since Dec by tallying 8 points and 4 rebounds. The Badgers connected on 12 3-pointers, including 9 in the first half. UW went 23-for-26 (.885) at the FT line, its highest percentage with at least 25 FTAs since going 28-for-31 (.903) vs. Indiana (2/3/15). The Badgers suffered their first loss of the season, 80-70, to No. 15 Xavier at the Kohl Center. The game was tied at with 2:00 remaining, but XU closed on a 14-4 run to escape with a rare win in Madison. Wisconsin erased a 9-point deficit in the first half and a 7-point deficit in the second half of a game that featured 6 ties and 10 lead changes. Xavier out-scored UW 12-4 on second chance points, in the paint and 13-3 in transition. Ethan Happ posted 21 points and 8 assists, going 7-for-10 at the free throw line. Happ surpassed the 1,000-point threshold vs. XU. Brevin Pritzl tallied 13 points (3-5 3FGs) and freshman Brad Davison notched then-career highs with 12 points and 4 steals in 28 minutes off the bench. Trevon Bluiett (25 pts, 9 reb, FTs) and J.P. Happ finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in 26:33 of action. Josh Gasser is the only other Badger to record a triple-double, posting 10 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists as a freshman at Northwestern on Jan. 23, RAREST OF FEATS Ethan Happ is the NCAA's first player 6-10 or taller to record a triple-double with points, rebounds and assists since Northwestern's Evan Eschmeyer (27p, 14r, 10a) did it against Indiana in Happ's is the first triple-double by a Big Ten player since Ohio State's JaQuan Lyle had 16 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists vs. Rutgers on Jan. 13, Happ's 12 assists signifies a new career high and equals the 3rd-highest total in school history. His 12 assists are the most by a Badger since Mike Kelley dished out 12 vs. Maryland on Nov. 29, Over the last 20 years, Happ is 1 of just 2 players 6-10 or taller to dish out at least 12 assists in a game along with Georgetown's Greg Monroe (12 assists against Providence in 2010). Happ is the NCAA's first player to post at least 10p, 11r, 11a and 4b since Dwyane Wade in the 2003 Elite Eight vs. Kentucky (20p, 11r, 11a, 4b). BADGERS WILL BE ROAD TESTED For the first time since the season, Wisconsin will play a total of 7 games away from home prior New Year's Day. In addition to 3 games at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, the Badgers will play road games at Xavier (Nov. 13), at Iowa (Nov. 30), at Marquette (Dec. 8) and at Western Kentucky (Dec. 29). Over the last 16 seasons, UW has played more than 5 games away from home in Nov./Dec. just twice, playing 6 in 2014 and UW has not played 4 or more true road games before New Year's in any season since 2001, when the Badgers played 5 true road games. FORD OUT WITH LEG INJURY Wisconsin will open the season without the services of sophomore forward Aleem Ford, who is out indefinitely after suffering a leg injury on Oct. 29. Ford is expected to return to action later this season. Ford appeared in all 33 games last season, starting 20. He averaged 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds, shooting a team-high 40.9% (45-110) from 3-point range. A native of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Ford's 45 3FGs ranked as the fifthhighest freshman total in UW history. EXHIBITION EXTRACTS Wisconsin posted a pair of exhibition victories over Iowa State, 85-69, in a closed scrimmage and an win over Div. III national runnerup UW-Oshkosh at the Kohl Center. Against Iowa State, sophomore Aleem Ford led the Badgers with 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting (3-3 3FGs). Sophomore D'Mitrik Trice poured in 16 points (4-9 3FGs) and senior Ethan Happ tallied 14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks and 3 steals in 25 minutes. UW shot 47.6% compared to 40.4% for the Cyclones and out-rebounded ISU, 10-4, on the offensive glass. Against UW-Oshkosh, the Badgers built a 27-point lead late in the first half, before cruising to the win. Sophomore Brad Davison was 1 of 6 players to tally at least 9 points, leading the Badgers with 16 points. Happ (13), Khalil Iverson (13), Nate Reuvers (11), Trice (9) and Kobe King (9) balanced out the scoring. HOME ON THE ROAD UW is renowned for its incredible home success, but it has also been quite good on the road lately. Wisconsin is (.642) away from home (road and neutral) over the last 5 seasons. XAVIER INDIVIDUAL NOTES Ethan Happ - Senior - Forward Already one of the most-accomplished players in school history, Ethan Happ returns for his senior season looking to cement his status as one of the Big Ten s all-time greats. A two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection, two-time Big Ten All-Defensive Team pick and 2017 All-American, Happ enters the season with a chance to finish his career ranked in UW s top three of nearly every category. The Milan, Illinois versatility was on display last season as he became the first Big Ten player to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals since Known for his hard work and durability (has started all 105 games in his career), Happ finds himself in an exclusive club as one of just five Big Ten players owning at least 1,500 career points, 800 rebounds and 250 assists over the last 20 years. Happ earned his bachelor s degree in May of 2018 and will spend his final year of eligibility pursuing a master s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. Long considered one of the top assistant coaches in the game, Gard served as an assistant at Wisconsin for 14-plus seasons, including the final seven as the associate head coach. In 2015, Gard was ranked as the fourth-best X&O assistant coach in college basketball by coachstat.net. In 2012, Gard was named No. 3 on the list of top assistant coaches in college basketball according to Bleacher Report. FOX Sports also listed Gard No. 10 on its list of the nation s top 25 assistant coaches. Prior to coming to Wisconsin in 2001, Gard spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at UW-Milwaukee and served as an assistant coach at UW-Platteville from Prior to joining Ryan s staff in Platteville, Gard spent three seasons at Southwestern High School and one at Platteville High School, where he served in junior high and assistant varsity coaching capacities. In 2016, Gard and his wife, Michelle, partnered with the University of the Wisconsin and Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association, to launch Garding Against Cancer. This fundraising initiative raises funds and awareness for cancer research and care within the state of Wisconsin. In its first two years of hosting fundraising events across the state, GAC raised more than $2 million dollars in the fight against cancer. Gard is a 1995 graduate of UW-Platteville with a degree in physical and health education.
