5 GAME 32: AT BIG TEN TOURNAMENT WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT ETHAN HAPP He's a first-team All-American. If he's not the player of the year right now, he's right up there. Indiana's Archie Miller (Feb. 25, 2019) Ethan Happ is not a preseason All-American, he's a postseason All- American. He's tremendous. He's just a difficult matchup. Michigan head coach John Beilein (Jan. 19, 2019) I ve never seen one player do more for one team. I ve never seen it. When he s in the game he just occupies so much. He s about as unstoppable as it gets. Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino (Feb. 6, 2019) He is a phenomenal player and he impacts winning in so many ways. I've been a huge fan and watched him for these past 4-5 years. It's a nightmare playing against him but I love how he plays, he's just a winner. Northwestern head coach Chris Collins (Jan. 26, 2019) You re talking about arguably one of the top five players in college basketball and maybe one of the all-time greats to play at Wisconsin. Illinois head coach Brad Underwood (Jan. 23, 2019) He is clever and he is so fast for a big guy probably the fastest big we've played all year. He is so crafty with the ball and he is such a good passer. He's just a tough cover and I'm glad we don't have to play him again. Purdue head coach Matt Painter (Jan. 11, 2019) Ethan Happ is one of the truly great players in college basketball. 8 THE IVERSON IMPACT Senior Khalil Iverson is spearheading the Big Ten's top defensive unit (60.3 ppg in Big Ten play) and positioning himself to possibly join that group. "Look who's guarding Tyler Cook, it's Khalil Iverson. Last year we saw him guard Carsen Edwards. He can guard one through five. He's a terrific athlete and he's embraced his role as a big time defender. I don't think he gets enough credit for being the type of defender that really impacts games that he is." - ESPN's Robbie Hummel, March 7, 2019 Iverson often draws the opposing team's top scorer, ranking 2nd on the Badgers with 20 steals during conference play. Iverson is quickly emerging as an offensive weapon for Wisconsin as well, tallying his first 2 career double-doubles in each of the Badgers' last 2 games. He set career highs with 22 points and 14 rebounds at Ohio State (3/10) and had 11 points and 11 boards vs. Iowa (3/7). Iverson has scored in double figures in 5 of the last 6 games, averaging 13.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg and shooting 61.1% (33-54) over that stretch. STINGY BADGERS Wisconsin ranks 8th in the NCAA allowing just 61.2 ppg. The Badgers have allowed just 1 opponent to crack 70 points in a regulation game this season. After assuming the head coaching reins on Dec. 15, 2015, Gard promptly led the team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons at the helm and will begin his fourth season as the head coach of the Badgers in Initially an interim head coach, Gard proved quickly he was worthy of the head coaching position and was officially named as such on March 7, In three seasons, he owns the third-highest winning percentage in UW history, piloting the Badgers to a record of (.613). In his first two seasons with the head coaching title, Gard maintained a level of success that has become synonymous with Wisconsin Basketball. In his inaugural season as head coach, Gard led the Badgers to the 2016 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, becoming just the second-ever first-year coach to win the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award. He followed that up by leading UW to the fifth-highest single-season win total in school history (27-10) and making a second-consecutive visit to the Sweet 16. Gard is just the third coach in the last 20 years to pilot his team to the Sweet 16 in each of his first two seasons, joining UCLA s Steve Lavin ( ) and Gonzaga s Mark Few ( ). Wisconsin maintained its place among the top of the Big Ten during the transition to Gard as well. In his first season, the Badgers finished the regular season in a tie for third place in the Big Ten standings extending its streak of top-four finishes to a league-record 16th-consecutive season with a 12-6 conference record. Gard led the Badgers to the most Big Ten wins by a first-year coach since 2004 (Bruce Weber, Illinois). Gard s Badgers would post another 12-6 conference campaign in 2017, finishing second in both the regular season and the Big Ten tournament. Wisconsin would cap off its 27-win season with a signature win in the NCAA tournament, knocking off the nation s No. 1 team Villanova, 65-62, to advance to the Sweet 16. Gard s first two seasons as head coach at Wisconsin continued a trend of lofty academic success, placing 15 players on the Academic All-Big Ten list. Over his 17 years in Madison, UW has boasted a total of 63 Academic All-Big Ten honors, trailing only Purdue and Northwestern over that span. Long considered one of the top assistant coaches in the game, Gard served as an assistant at Wisconsin for 14-plus seasons, including the final seven as the associate head coach. In 2015, Gard was ranked as the fourth-best X&O assistant coach in college basketball by coachstat.net. In 2012, Gard was named No. 3 on the list of top assistant coaches in college basketball according to Bleacher Report. FOX Sports also listed Gard No. 10 on its list of the nation s top 25 assistant coaches. Prior to coming to Wisconsin in 2001, Gard spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at UW-Milwaukee and served as an assistant coach at UW-Platteville from Prior to joining Ryan s staff in Platteville, Gard spent three seasons at Southwestern High School and one at Platteville High School, where he served in junior high and assistant varsity coaching capacities. In 2016, Gard and his wife, Michelle, partnered with the University of the Wisconsin and Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association, to launch Garding Against Cancer. This fundraising initiative raises funds and awareness for cancer research and care within the state of Wisconsin. In its first two years of hosting fundraising events across the state, GAC raised more than $2 million dollars in the fight against cancer. Gard is a 1995 graduate of UW-Platteville with a degree in physical and health education. He received a master s degree in counselor education from Platteville in Gard and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Mackenzie and Peyton, and a son, Isaac.
