The Saints have won three in a row heading into postseason action and eight of their last 10 overall. The Saints 10 wins are one shy of tying the program record and their.857 conference winning percentage is the best ever. Siena finished 10th in the MAAC in 2011, but thanks to a 6-1 conference mark in the regular season, enter the conference championships as the No. 2 seed. Wednesday night Siena Head Coach Gareth Elliott was named MAAC Coach of the Year and senior striker Sindre Ek was tabbed Offensive Player of the Year. In total, the Saints had seven All-MAAC selections and set a program record with 10 MAAC All-Academic Team honorees. The Saints are (.333) all-time in the conference championships, but have never advanced past the semifinal round (0-9-1). In last season s MAAC Championships in Florida, the No. 10 seeded Saints upended defending conference champion Saint Peter s 5-1 in the First Round. Siena then played second seeded Iona to a scoreless tie before falling in penalty kicks, 4-3. Siena is all-time when playing as the No. 2 seed and vs. the No. 3 seed. The Saints lost their only previous MAAC Championships appearance here in Poughkeepsie when No. 2 seed Siena dropped a 4-0 decision to third seeded Fairfield in This will be the first time Siena will face Niagara in the conference championships. The Saints have already previously faced every other current MAAC school in the conference tournament save for Canisius.

Niagara s only loss this season was a 1-0 defeat against the Saints in Loudonville Oct. 19. The Purple Eagles are receiving 17 votes in this week s NSCAA Coaches Poll - the 26th highest total in the country - and have an RPI of 54. Additionally, for the seventh straight week, they are ranked No. 1 in the North Atlantic by the NSCAA. Niagara also received major recognition at Wednesday night s awards banquet as Rene DeZorzi was named the MAAC's Defensive Player of the Year, while teammate Brett Petricek earned Goalkeeper of the Year honors. All-Time Series vs. Niagara Siena and Niagara are meeting for the 25th time with the Saints holding a all-time advantage. However, this is the first time in which the programs are meeting in postseason play. Siena won the regular season meeting against the Purple Eagles 1-0 amidst a monsoon Oct. 19 in Loudonville, ending Niagara s hopes of an undefeated season. Daniel Alderstad scored the game-winner for the Saints in the 43rd minute, while Adam Myers made five saves to post his first collegiate shutout. Head Coach Gareth Elliott - Fifth Season at Siena (.517) Overall (.616) MAAC The 2012 Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year, Gareth Elliott is in his fifth season leading the Saints. Now in his 10th season as a collegiate coach (five as an assistant and five as head coach) and four years as a player, his squads have posted winning records 13 times in 14 years. Prior to Siena, Elliott served as an assistant coach for five years at the University of Rhode Island, his alma mater, where he helped guide the Rams to three Atlantic 10 championships and three NCAA tournament appearances. Elliott, a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, stands among the most successful student-athletes in Rhode Island soccer history. During his playing career, he led the Rams to two Atlantic 10 regular-season titles, two Atlantic 10 postseason championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Elliott, a starting striker at Rhode Island from , ranks seventh all-time in career points. He appeared in 78 games over his career and finished with 87 points, including 31 goals and 25 assists. He was a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Championship team honoree, and was selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region team in In 2000, Elliott was named the Atlantic Tournament Sweet 16. As a professional, Elliott played one season with the Ards Football Club of the Irish Premier League. He started 35 games for the squad during his career. In 2003, Elliott returned to his alma mater to begin his collegiate coaching career as an assistant under former Rams head coach Ed Bradley. As assistant coach, Elliott helped lead URI to three Atlantic 10 Championships, including back-to-back titles in 2005 and In the Rams last appearance in 2006, Elliott helped the team advance to the Second Round. *Out of 10 teams!out of 202 teams

4 A Fantast-EK Season 2012 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Sindre Ek has enjoyed a stellar senior season. The Oslo, Norway native enters the MAAC Championships tied for the league lead in both points (29) and game-winning goals (four). He ranks 13th nationally in scoring and his 12 goals are the 17th highest total in all of Division I. His 29 points and 12 goals scored are both the third most in program single-season history. Currently, he stands tied for third all-time in program history in goals (22) and is fifth in points (54). Opalka Shines On and Off the Pitch Senior captain Jannis Opalka has enjoyed one of the most decorated careers both on and off the field. Athletically, he has been a two-time captain and an anchor of the Saints center backfield for each of the past four seasons. Academically, he has posted a nearly perfect 3.9 cumulative GPA while majoring in Management. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's male nomination for the NCAA Student Athlete Sportsmanship Award, earlier this season Opalka was one of just 30 candidates nationally for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award and last week earned Capital One Academic All-District honors for the second straight season. Fifthyear head coach Gareth Elliott was named the Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year and senior striker Sindre Ek was tabbed the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. Junior captain James Beeston joined Ek on the MAAC First Team, while center backs Falko Friedrichs and Jannis Opalka earned Second Team All- MAAC Honors. Freshmen Matt Needham and Tom Allen as well as first-year player Damian Liesemann were named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team. Siena made program history with their awards in several ways. It marked the first time the Saints boasted the conference's coach of the year and also the first time in which the program received multiple First Team All-MAAC selections. The Saints also excelled in the classroom where they had a record 10 student athletes named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Last Time Out Siena defeated Marist 3-1 on Oct. 27 in Loudonville, N.Y. on what would turn out to be the regular season finale. The victory clinched the Saints a MAAC Championships berth for the third straight season. Sindre Ek and Falko Friedrichs each tallied three points as the Saints set a program record with their seventh straight home win.
