2 16 For the first time in her 13 years as head coach of the Duke Women s Basketball team, Gail Goestenkors enters a season with balance in a roster from top to bottom. On many occasions, the Blue Devils have had solid wing players but not very tall post players, but critics cannot say that anymore. Duke enters the season with nine very good guards and wings along with four outstanding post players, including 6-7 Alison Bales and 6-5 Chante Black at center. After finishing with eight players during two of the last four years, Duke will boast a roster of 13 this season. We ve been working toward this for several years, said Goestenkors. I think we ve learned some tough lessons that you can t just be guard-oriented or just post-oriented; you need a good balance. Last year we really worked on it as that was part of the identity we wanted to have -- to have a very strong post game as well as a perimeter game. I thought Alison (Bales) and Chante (Black) in particular made huge strides from the beginning of the season to the end. So, it s very exciting to think about our post play this year. The Blue Devils received some of the best news for the season on April 6, 2005, when Monique Currie decided to come back for her fifth year instead of leaving for the WNBA. I think Monique could be player of the year in the nation this year, said Goestenkors. When you look at her statistics and what she was able to do for us last year, without a true point guard and with a freshman running the show, it s really remarkable. Currie, who finished the season as the runner-up for National Player of the Year and was the 2005 ACC Player of the Year, averaged 17.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.1 steals and hit 31.7 percent from three-point land as a redshirt-junior. She was the only player in the ACC to rank in the top-15 in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. I have so much respect for Monique deciding to come back, to give it one more shot to win a national championship and to continue her education, said Goestenkors. My goal for her is to be player of the year and to go out with a national championship. I m committed to helping her achieve her goals. One of the top clutch players in the game today, Currie hit game-winning shots for the Blue Devils against Tennessee, N.C. State and Maryland, while saving her best play for crunch time. Duke will welcome former starting point guard Lindsey Harding back to the lineup after missing last season, transfer point guard Emily Waner and the Senior s Mistie Williams (left), Monique Currie (middle) and Jessica Foley (next page) were selected tri-captains to lead the Blue Devils. second-best recruiting class in the nation, which features High School Player of the Year, Abby Waner. When all of the pieces are put together, the Blue Devils feature one of the most talented groups of studentathletes poised for a National Championship. It s an exciting time for us, said Goestenkors. We feel like this year we have the most depth that we ve ever had. We have a tremendous amount of talent, great leadership, and all of the players gained valuable experience last year. This is going to be a team that has potential to score inside and out and also has great versatility with players that can play numerous positions. So, I couldn t be any more excited about this season. THE SENIOR CLASS One of the most important qualities a National Championship team needs to have is leadership, and the Blue Devils will feature three seniors Currie, Mistie Williams and Jessica Foley who have already shown they are stellar leaders both on and off the court. The tri-captains have led the Blue Devils to 96 victories, two ACC Championships, one NCAA Final Four, two Elite Eight finishes and three ACC Regular Season titles over the last three years. Last year at this time there were a lot of questions about our leadership because we had lost such strong leaders with Alana (Beard), Vicki (Krapohl) and Iciss (Tillis), said Goestenkors. So I thought it was a growing year for us and the leadership really evolved throughout the season. I think Monique (Currie), Jess (Foley), and Mistie (Williams) all became very confident, very competent leaders for us. They ve been through the wars and they know what it s about. The captains will show this highly-touted freshman class what it takes to be champions. Currie, a native of Washington, D.C., is expected to challenge for National Player of the Year honors for the second straight year and is coming off gaining excellent international experience over the summer playing for the USA World Championship gold medal team. Coming off the best season of her Duke career, Foley averaged 10.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals in 34 contests in A product of Wodonga, Victoria, Australia, Foley notched a Duke single season-record 68 three-pointers and tied the single game record with seven in a contest versus Georgia Tech. A third-team All-ACC selection, Foley has hit 136 treys over her career, which ranks fourth all-time at Duke. Williams, a native of Janesville, Wis., is a preseason Wooden Award nominee after coming off a year where she averaged 11.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Blue Devils. She hit 53.8 percent of her field goals and has started 70 consecutive games for Duke. A true power forward for the Blue Devils, Williams posted eight double-doubles as a junior, which ranked tied for third in the ACC. THE POST With the return of Bales, Black and Williams and the addition of freshman Carrem Gay to the mix, the Blue Devils boast their best front line in school history. Duke will feature a very intimidating post game of 6-7 (Bales), 6-5 (Black), 6-3 (Williams) and 6-2 (Gay). When I look at our three returning post players, I would feel very comfortable with any of them starting and any of them finishing a game, said Goestenkors. They work so well together and I thought at the end of last season they became a dominant force for us. The trio of Bales, Black and Williams combined to block 210 shots, more than every other team in the ACC. Leading the way for the Blue Devils was Bales, a junior from Dayton, Ohio, who registered an ACC-record 134 blocks and ranked sixth in the NCAA with 3.7 a contest. Bales started 33 of 36 games for the Blue Devils, but started playing more aggressively on the offensive end at the end of last season, averaging 10.0 points in the final three games of the NCAA Tournament. On the defensive end, we led the nation in blocked shots, said Goestenkors. I think having that intimidating force down low with those posts really helped our defense

3 and gave our guards a lot of confidence as well understanding they always had help behind them. Gay joins the Blue Devils after being named a consensus All-America as a senior on the No. 1 ranked Christ The King High School squad that registered a 27-0 record. A product of New York, N.Y., Gay averaged 18.1 points, 12.4 rebounds, 5.3 blocks and 4.7 assists, while attempting to dunk in one game. THE GUARDS One of the biggest challenges Goestenkors will face in will be playing time for Duke s nine guards. The luxury Coach G has is many of them can play a variety of different positions since all of them are very talented. Everyone on the team is going to need to sacrifice a little bit for the greater good, said Goestenkors. The wonderful thing is we all have the same goal, which is to win a national championship and everybody is willing to sacrifice for that. After not having a true point guard in , the Blue Devils will feature two of the top floor generals in the nation with Harding and Emily Waner. Harding, a junior from Houston, Texas, missed all of last season after a violation of team rules and Waner had to sit out after transferring from Colorado, but both practiced with the team the entire season. Harding, a former third team All-ACC and All- ACC Defensive Team selection, is one of the quickest players in the game today. As a sophomore, she averaged 6.8 points, 4.9 assists, 2.0 steals and started 33 of 34 games. I think Lindsey learned a lot last year, both on and off the court, said Goestenkors. It was a long year for her, but I think it was a great learning experience. I know she s so anxious to get back on the court and she will be just a tremendous addition to our team. Waner, a Highlands Ranch, Colo., product, started eight of 30 contests at Colorado as a freshman and posted averages of 7.1 points, 1.6 assists, 1.8 rebounds and hit 39.2 percent from three-point. The Blue Devils will also welcome back last year s starters Wanisha Smith, Foley and Currie along with letterwinner Laura Kurz. A legit shooting guard, Smith was forced to play the point position last year and earned All-ACC Freshman accolades, after averaging 10.9 points, 4.3 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.7 steals. She set a Duke freshman record with 154 assists as she started the final 35 contests. Kurz is coming off a solid freshman campaign where she was Duke s most deadly three-point threat hitting 45.2 from downtown, while averaging 5.6 points and 2.2 rebounds. A native of Lower Gwynedd, Pa., Kurz is a 6-1 wing that can play many different positions for the Blue Devils. Rounding out the nine guards are freshmen Abby Waner, Keturah Jackson and Brittany Mitch. Waner, from Highlands Ranch, Colo., will have three years to play with her sister, Emily, at Duke. One of the top scorers to attend Duke, the 5-10 Waner averaged 32.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.7 steals and 6.9 assists for ThunderRidge H.S. as a senior. For her career, she scored 2,670 points and notched 61 points in her final regular season game. A tough 6-0 defender from Columbia, S.C., Jackson will join the Blue Devils after registering averages of 19.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 4.0 assists at Dreher H.S. One of the most versatile players on the Duke squad will be Mitch, a 6-2 wing who can play the 1-4 positions. As a senior, she collected 14.7 points, 8.6 assists, 7.8 steals and 5.8 rebounds for St. John s H.S., which finished 28-3 and held a No. 14 final national ranking. We have so much versatility as some of our perimeter players can play in the post, which will be nice, said Goestenkors. We can go with a real small lineup if and when we want to and we re going to be able to press a lot more. That s something we haven t been able to do as much because our numbers were so low over the last few years. THE FRESHMEN For yet another year, Goestenkors and the rest of her coaching staff have brought in one of the top recruiting classes in the nation. The foursome of Waner, Jackson, Gay and Mitch were tabbed the No. 2 class in the nation by the All-Star Girls Report and Blue Star Report. It s just really exciting, said Goestenkors. The freshmen were all four that committed very early and didn t need a lot of attention. They knew they wanted to come and help us win a national championship. They re very self-motivated and all four are very versatile, which is important in our system. Over the last seven years, the Blue Devils have brought in top-five recruiting classes in each of those seasons, including the top-rated classes in 2000, 2001, 2002 and FINAL OVERVIEW In search of a first National Championship, the Blue Devils will open the campaign on Nov. 18 at Penn State. On the slate includes 14 opponents which advanced to NCAA Tournament action last season. I think we ve put together a very competitive schedule, said Goestenkors. We ll be tested early and we have some really tough road games. Old Dominion, Penn State, Texas, TCU those in particular stand out and are always difficult teams to play on their home court. Our home schedule will be tough with national power Auburn, who has brought in a top recruiting class, and then hosting Tennessee, which will be another barnburner and hopefully another sellout for us as well. With the return of all five starters, seven of nine letterwinners and welcoming the second-best recruiting class in the nation, Goestenkors and the Blue Devils will face many challenges along their journey but will put a very exciting team on the floor. We re going to run, said Goestenkors. This will be our greatest running team that we ve ever had and our greatest pressing team. So I need to take full advantage of the fact that we have good numbers, great players who want to run and press. This year we will press and run more than we ever have Quick Facts University Location... Durham, N.C. Founded Trinity College Enrollment... 6,347 undergraduates Nickname... 4 Noting The Blue Devils... The Experience Factor... The Blue Devils will boast one of the most experienced teams in the nation in with one fifth-year senior - Monique Currie; two other seniors - Jessica Foley and Mistie Williams; one fourth-year junior - Lindsey Harding; one other junior - Alison Bales; one third-year sophomore - Emily Waner; three other sophomores - Chante Black, Laura Kurz and Wanisha Smith; and four freshmen - Carrem Gay, Keturah Jackson, Brittany Mitch and Abby Waner. Duke returns all five starters and welcomes back Harding, Waner joins the game-day roster, and two other letterwinners highlight the Blue Devil squad. The Blue Devils will have experience at every position this season, after having only eight players at the end of the campaign. Preseason No In the Lindy s and Street & Smith s Magazine preseason polls, the Blue Devils were tabbed No. 1 in the nation. This marks the second time in school history Duke has been preseason ranked No. 1 nationally. Back in , the Blue Devils were preseason ranked No. 1 in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls. Overload Of Guards... Head Coach Gail Goestenkors will have no shortage of guards in as the Blue Devils boast nine on the roster. The advantage Duke has is most of the guards are very versatile and can play the 1-4 positions. Between having two point guards -- Lindsey Harding and Emily Waner; four shooting guards -- Abby Waner, Wanisha Smith, Jessica Foley, Keturah Jackson; and three other wings -- Monique Currie, Brittany Mitch and Laura Kurz -- Duke is loaded in the back court. Top Recruiting Class Arrives... The second-best recruiting class in the nation will take to the floor this season for the Blue Devils -- Abby Waner, Keturah Jackson, Brittany Mitch and Carrem Gay. All four freshmen were highly ranked coming out of high school. The Record Book... The season is primed to be a recordbreaking year for the Blue Devils. Fifth-year senior Monique Currie could become only the third Duke player to reach 2,000 points, Alison Bales is only 50 blocks away from breaking the Duke career record, Jessica Foley needs 66 treys to become the all-time leader as well as many other possibilities. As a team, Duke blocked an NCAA-record 267 shots last season. The Duke Women s Basketball Team Front Row (left to right): Caitlin Howe, Assistant Coach Shannon Perry, Head Coach Gail Goestenkors, Assistant Coach Gale Valley, Assistant Coach Tia Jackson and Athletic Trainer Summer McKeehan. Back Row (left to right): Chante Black, Laura Kurz, Carrem Gay, Monique Currie, Keturah Jackson, Emily Waner, Abby Waner, Lindsey Harding, Wanisha Smith, Jessica Foley, Brittany Mitch, Mistie Williams and Alison Bales. Monique Currie To Challenge For NPOY... One of the top clutch players in the game today, fifthyear senior Monique Currie returns to the Blue Devils after passing on entering her name in the 2005 WNBA Draft. She will be pursuing a graduate degree in Humanities after graduating with a degree in Public Policies and African American Studies in May. A National Player of the Year candidate and runnerup for the award, Currie is primed to leave her mark in the Blue Devil record book and to take on the challenge of having her r jersey retired. Currie averaged 17.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.1 steals a game last year without a true point guard to distrubute the ball to her and in the first season in the spotlight, after the graduation of Alana Beard. In , Currie has already been named a preseason candidate for the Wooden Award and State Farm Wade Trophy. The Return Of Harding... After sitting out the entire season due to a violation of team rules, fourth-year junior Lindsey Harding will return to the Blue Devils this year. Harding, a former third team All-ACC and All- ACC Defensive team selection, is one of the quickest players in the game today. As a sophomore, she averaged 6.8 points, 4.9 assists, 2.0 steals and started 33 of 34 games. Summer Of Gold... Over the summer, the Blue Devils were wellrepresented on USA Basketball squads. Senior Monique Currie played on the World University Games Team that won the gold medal in Izmir, Turkey, while Head Coach Gail Goestenkors and freshman Abby Waner led the USA U19 World Championship Team to a gold medal in Tunis, Tunisia. Goestenkors was the Head Coach on the squad that won a gold medal for only the second time out of six tournaments for the U19 squad. Junior Alison Bales was one of 16 finalists for the World University Games Team, but did not make the final roster that was sent to Turkey. Emily Waner To Suit Up... After transferring from the University of Colorado in the summer of 2004, Emily Waner has put in her time and is ready to suit up for the Blue Devils in in Waner, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., sat out last season due to NCAA rules, but was able to practice 18

5 every day with the team and learn what Coach G expects from her point guards. At Colorado as a freshman, Waner started eight of 30 contests and averaged 7.1 points, 1.6 assists, 1.8 rebounds and hit 39.2 percent from three-point. Tia Jackson Joins Staff... One of the top recruiters in the nation, Tia Jackson joined the Duke staff over the summer after LaVonda Wager accepted the head coaching job at Oregon State. Jackson arrived after spending five years with the UCLA women s basketball staff. A native of Salisbury, Md., and 1995 graduate of Iowa, Jackson will reunite with former teammate Shannon Perry, who enters her second year on the Duke staff. Williams & Currie On Wooden Watch... In August, the John R. Wooden Award committee released its preseason top-30 candidates for the National Player of the Year with seniors Mistie Williams and Monique Currie listed. It marks the first time Williams has been named to a preseason National Player of the Year listing, while it is the second straigth year Currie was selected to the squad. She was a finalist for the award in The Sister Act... Duke will feature its first set of sisters playing together in with Emily and Abby Waner suiting up. The natives of Colorado Springs, Colo., will be a sophomore and freshman, respectively, for the Blue Devils. Looking accross the nation, the Waners will be one of 17 sets of sisters playing together this season. Foley Has Offseason Surgery... After dealing with an end of the season foot injury, senior Jessica Foley had surgery in July and missed the entire preseason. She had a nonunion stress fracture of the navicular bone in her left foot, but was expected to return to practice in October. Caitlin Howe To Serve As Student Asst. Coach... After going through three years at Duke with numerous injuries, including three ACL tears since her junior year of high school, Caitlin Howe will spend her final year with the Blue Devils on the sidelines as a student assistant coach. A product of Rochester, N.Y., Howe played in 11 games last season before being sidelined for the remainder of the year with a shoulder injury. She appeared in a total of 27 career games at Duke.
