With two regular season contests left, the ninth-ranked Duke women s basketball team (24-3, 10-2 ACC) will hit the road to face Virginia (15-13, 4-8 ACC) on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at John Paul Jones Arena and will be Duke s fi nal road regular season contest of the year. Fans can catch the game live on the Blue Devil Sports Network, which will be aired on 620 AM, with Steve Barnes (PXP) and Morgan Patrick (Color) on the air. The Blue Devils currently sit tied for fi rst in the ACC along with Miami and Florida State with a 10-2 league mark and will close out the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 27 against 13th-ranked North Carolina at 5:00 p.m., on Fox Sports Net. It will mark senior day for Jasmine Thomas, Krystal Thomas and Karima Christmas. Duke is currently ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Division I Coaches Polls. Noting Duke... Virginia enters the contest with a overall and 4-8 league mark under the direction of Head Coach Debbie Ryan, who is in her 35th year at the helm. The Cavaliers have been led by Chelsea Shine (9.8 points), Ariana Moorer (9.3 points), Ataira Franklin (8.5 points) and Paulisha Kelllum (6.7 points) on the season. The Series With Virginia... Virginia leads the overall series with Duke, 32-29, but the Blue Devils have won the past 17 in a row against the Cavaliers. The last Virginia victory came on Jan. 30, 2000 with a win in Charlottesville, Va. In the last 28 games of the Duke/Virginia series, the Blue Devils own a 24-4 record dating back to March 4, In games played in Charlottesville, Va., the Blue Devils own a overall mark, but are winners of the last seven in a row. Blue Devil Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie will face Virginia for the fi fth time in her 19-year coaching career. Krystal Thomas leads the ACC with an 9.6 rebounds per game average against ACC opponents. Senior Jasmine Thomas will play in the fi nal regular season contest in her home state of Virginia on Thursday against the Cavaliers. A product of Fairfax, Va., Thomas has totaled a 6-0 record in games played in the state of Virginia since arriving at Duke -- Virginia Tech (4-0), Virginia (1-0) and James Madison (1-0). The 50-point loss, 90-50, by Virginia Tech at the hands of the Blue Devils was the worst ACC loss in school history for the Hokies. Duke notched 36 points off the bench in the last game against Virginia Tech, but in the previous two games the Blue Devils averaged only nine points off the bench. Duke averaged 25.9 points off the bench the fi rst 24 games. Duke has featured nine different starting lineups this season, including fi ve different lineups over the last seven games. With her 707 career rebounds, senior Krystal Thomas is 12th on Duke s all-time rebounds list. She needs 19 more boards to move into a tie for 11th along with Carey Kauffman. Date... Prior to the last two years, the Blue Devils had not posted only one double-fi gure scorer since the season (Stacy Hurd, 13.6). The Blue Devils have notched 20+ offensive boards in eight games this year. In four years at Duke, Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie has notched fi ve victories against top-fi ve ranked teams -- #4/4 Xavier in , #3/3 Ohio State in , #3/4 Stanford in , while knocking off #4/3 Rutgers and #5/4 Maryland in Senior Jasmine Thomas continues to move up the Duke career scoring list this season as she now ranks eighth with 1,557 points. She needs 63 more to move into a tie for seventh along with Georgia Schweitzer (1,620). The 11 active players on the Blue Devil roster combined to notch a 3.28 GPA in the fall. Duke s bench has outscored the opposing team s starters twice this season -- against Wisconsin (33-26) and versus Virginia Tech (29-28). The Blue Devils notched their fi fth road victory against a ranked opponent over the last four years and the fi rst of the season with an win at 21st-ranked Florida State. Senior Krystal Thomas has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in four out of the last fi ve contests and is coming off notching a career-high 17 rebounds against Virginia Tech. This included 10 offensive rebounds. Over the last fi ve games, Thomas has averaged 11.4 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 8.6 points. She leads Duke with six double-doubles on the year. Thomas has also posted nine double-digit rebound games on the season, which is a career best. She now leads the ACC with a 9.6 per game average in league contests. 10 ACC Wins Once Again... With the victory over Virginia Tech, Duke earned its 10th ACC win of the season, which gave the Blue Devils 10 or more league wins for the 13th straight year. The streak is the longest in the ACC. Freshman Tricia Liston broke out of her slump against Virginia Tech in the last game as she notched a career-high 19 points on her 19th birthday (Feb. 20). She hit 3-of-5 from downtown and 7-of-10 fi eld goals for the game. Liston had struggled the previous six games hitting only 4-of-19 fi eld goals and 0-of-8 from three-point land. In ACC games only, Liston ranks 12th with a 34.2 three-point fi eld goal percentage. Double-Figure Minutes... Duke currently has 11 players averaging double-fi gure minutes played on the season. The Blue Devils have never featured 11 players averaging 10+ minutes played in a season. The squad had all nine and the team had all eight players average double-digit minutes. The Blue Devils are the only team in the ACC and in the top 25 that feature every member of their team averaging double-digit minutes. Senior Production... Through 27 games, Duke s trio of seniors -- Karima Christmas, Jasmine Thomas and Krystal Thomas -- have played huge for the Blue Devils and have been a big part of leading Duke to a 24-3 mark. All three seniors have scored 45.8 percent of Duke s points on the year. The class ranks as one of the most productive senior classes in school history (percentage of scoring). In her fi rst meeting against Virginia a year ago, Allison Vernerey registered 17 points, fi ve rebounds, two blocks and one steal in 27 minutes. She hit all eight fi eld goal attempts. Gray Heating Up... Freshman point guard Chelsea Gray has played only three minutes over the last two games as she missed the Maryland contest due to the fl u and was injured just three minutes into the Virginia Tech game. Gray suffered a left ankle injury and is listed as day-to-day. Prior to getting injured against Virginia Tech, she averaged 14.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.0 steals the previous three games. In those games, she hit 7-of-13 three-pointers for a 53.8 percentage. Gray had notched double-fi gure scoring in three straight contests and matched a career high with seven assists against Boston College. She posted a career-high 20 points at North Carolina on Feb. 7. Gray hit a career-high four three-pointers on seven attempts, while grabbing six rebounds, dishing four assists and swiping one steal in a career-high 32 minutes. In the ACC stats, Gray ranks fourth in three-point fi eld goal percentage (39.4). Shorthanded at Maryland... Duke traveled to Maryland on Feb. 17 and came away with a loss. The Blue Devils were very shorthanded as starting point guard Chelsea Gray didn t even make the trip due to illness. Prior to the game as well, Shay Selby got sick and starting forward Allison Vernerey was also dealing with sickness. McCallie registered 82 victories in her fi rst three years at Duke, which is the second-highest total for Division I head coaches in their fi rst three years at an institution. Thomas a National Player of the Year Candidate... Duke senior Jasmine Thomas has been named a candidate for the State Farm Wade Trophy, John R. Wooden Award and Naismith National Player of the Year awards. Thomas is coming off a junior campaign where she averaged 16.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.8 steals on the year, while leading Duke to its sixth ACC Championship and a share of the ACC Regular Season title. The 5-9 guard started all 36 contests and led the Blue Devils with 11 games with 20 or more points scored. A native of Fairfax, Va., Thomas was one of 12 fi nalists for the State Farm Wade Trophy, Naismith and John R. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) released the preseason ACC women s basketball poll with Duke earning 24-of-33 fi rst-place votes on its way to being tabbed the favorite by a vote of the Blue Ribbon Panel, which consists of national and local media, as well as school representatives. It marks the fi rst time since 2005 the Blue Devils have been slated to capture the ACC title. The Blue Ribbon Panel also voted on a preseason All-ACC Team, Preseason Player of the Year and a Newcomer Watch List.
