McCallie will return to her home state of Maine as the seventh-ranked Blue Devils (8-2) will take on the Maine Black Bears (2-6) on Monday, Dec. 21 at 7:00 p.m. The contest will be played at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Fans can also hear the Blue Devils on the Duke ISP Radio Network on WDNC AM 620 with Steve Barnes (PXP) and Morgan Patrick (Color) calling the action. McCallie, who spent eight years as the head coach at Maine, recruited and coached Black Bears Head Coach Cindy Blodgett. Blodgett is in her third year as the head coach at Maine and is the only former player of McCallie who is now a head coach. The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press and No. 8 in the ESPN/USA Today Division I Coaches Polls, while Maine is unranked. Noting Duke... Maine enters Monday with a 2-6 overall record under the direction of Head Coach Cindy Blodgett. Samantha Wheeler (10.1 points, 5.3 rebounds), Kristin Baker (10.1 points, 3.6 rebounds) and Aman Tewksbury (9.0 points, 7.1 rebounds) lead the Black Bears. So far on the year, Maine is 2-2 at home with victories over CCSU (61-58) and Buffalo (58-53). The Series With Maine... Duke and Maine will meet for the second time in school history. The two squads faced off last year in Durham, N.C., with the Blue Devils posting a victory. In the game, Krystal Thomas registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Joy Cheek added 10 points and Chante Black tossed in 16 points. Duke Versus the America East Conference... The Blue Devils own a record of 4-1 against teams from the America East Conference -- Boston U. (2-0), Hartford (0-1), Maine (1-0) and New Hampshire (1-0). Reunion Set For Monday... Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie will go up against her former team -- Maine -- on Monday, Dec. 21. McCallie spent her fi rst eight years as a head coach at Maine and guided the Black Bears to a record, six NCAA Tournaments, two America East Tournament and two North Atlantic Championships from Coach P will also go up against her former player, Cindy Blodgett, who is in her third year as the head coach at Maine. Blodgett was a four-year letterwinner at Maine under McCallie. Blodgett led the NCAA in scoring as a sophomore and junior at Maine under Coach P. McCallie is expected to have at least 65 family and friends in attendance at the game as she has parents and siblings who currently live in Maine. Coach P was also inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in June of 2008 and the University of Maine Athletics Hall of Fame in October of McCallie attended Brunswick H.S., in Maine and graduated in Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes... Karima Christmas played against Maine s Jasmine Rush, who is from Houston, Texas (St. Pius X H.S.), in AAU and high school. Duke has gone up against seven teams who were undefeated going into the contest with the Blue Devils this season -- Ohio State (8-0), James Madison (7-0), Stanford (7-0), Western Kentucky (3-0), Georgia Southern (1-0), Houston Baptist (0-0) and Texas A&M (0-0). Jasmine Thomas had a streak of 20 straight made free throws come to an end against James Madison. Over her 18 years as a head coach, Joanne P. McCallie owns a record of 1-0 all-time against Maine. Against teams from the America East Conference, Coach P owns an all-time record of Boston U. (14-4), Hartford (15-4), Maine (1-0), New Hampshire (14-3) and Vermont (15-8). Junior Jasmine Thomas has hit 20 three-pointers in only 10 games this season. As a freshman, she hit 24 in 35 games and as a sophomore she hit 28 in 30 games. Duke has won 34 straight home games in the month of December. The last loss came on Dec. 20, 1997 against UCLA, Duke has registered 33 wins out of its last 34 games at home against non-conference foes. Over the last eight years, the Blue Devils have posted a 60-4 overall record against non-conference opponents in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The losses came against Tennessee (2), Connecticut and South Carolina. Junior Krystal Thomas has moved into ninth place on Duke s all-time blocked shots list with 87. McCallie helped her current star reach a milestone. Chante Black scored 16 points and reached 1,000 for her career in the eighth-ranked Blue Devils rout of Maine on Nov. 16, Krystal Thomas had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Joy Cheek added 10 points. Duke shot nearly 48 percent while holding Maine to 26 percent shooting in helping McCallie beat the Maine program she led to six NCAA tournaments in eight seasons from Maine had more turnovers (38) than points. Duke turned those miscues into 44 points, held a rebounding advantage, limited the Black Bears to one fi eld goal over the fi rst 12 minutes and held them to single digits until the fi nal minute of the fi rst half. Black became the 24th player in Duke history to reach the 1,000-point mark with her basket in the post roughly four minutes in. She had her way with Maine s undersized lineup. Maine, which didn t have a player taller than 6-3 on the roster, had no answers for the 6-5 Black or the 6-4 Thomas, who helped the Blue Devils outscore the Black Bears in the paint. Cheek Catches Fire... Senior Joy Cheek caught fi re against 24thranked James Madison on Friday as she totaled a career-high 21 points, had seven rebounds, one steal and one assist in only 25 minutes. Cheek has registered double-fi gure scoring in six contests, while four of those six games have been played at home. Over the last four games, Cheek has hit 3-of-5 from downtown. Christmas Makes Third Start... After coming off the bench and registering doubledigit scoring in three straight games, junior Karima Christmas was rewarded with the start against 24thranked James Madison. In the game, Christmas scored seven points, pulled down eight rebounds, two assists and one steal in 25 minutes. Christmas made her third start of the season and fi fth of her career. She is averaging 7.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.5 steals on the year. In the NCAA Stats... Through games of Dec. 13, Duke ranks fi fth nationally in steals (14.4), 14th in rebound margin (10.4) and 23rd in blocked shots per game (5.4). James Madison ranks 21st nationally in fi eld goal percentage defense (33.8). On the Road... Duke will play its fourth true road game of the season at Maine on Monday. The Blue Devils are 1-2 on the road this season with losses at 16th-ranked Texas A&M and at second-ranked Stanford. In those contests, the Blue Devils are pulling down an average of 50.7 rebounds a game, while holding opponents to only Duke is forcing 23.3 turnovers and registering 15.0 steals. The Blue Devils have hit only 11-of-51 treys (21.6%) in those games. Jasmine Thomas (15.3), Joy Cheek (11.0 points) and Karima Christmas (10.0) are averaging doublefi gure scoring on the road. Thomas Posting All-America Like Numbers... Junior Jasmine Thomas turned in one of the most dominating performances ever seen in Cameron Indoor Stadium against third-ranked Ohio State on Thursday, Dec. 3. Thomas scored a career-high 29 points, had two assists and two steals. She hit a career-high 10 fi eld goals out of 20 attempts and nailed 2-of-4 from downtown. Thomas backed that up in the next contest against Southern California with 28 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and hit a career-high 10-of-10 from the free throw line. At second-ranked Stanford, Thomas had 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 38 minutes. Thomas came within three assists of her second triple-double of the season against 24th-ranked James Madison with 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. In four games against ranked opponents this season, Thomas is averaging 20.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals in four contests. So far on the year, Thomas is averaging 16.5 Joanne P. In the ACC stats, she ranks fi fth in scoring (16.9), fourth in assists (5.08), second in free throw percentage (86.0), tied for 10th in steals (2.1), tied for fourth in three-point fi eld goals made (2.0) and fi fth in assist/turnover ratio (1.6). Thomas has scored double-fi gures in nine straight games and has 20+ points four times in At Home in Cameron Indoor Stadium... Duke is riding a 20-game home court winning streak dating back the last three years. During that streak, the Blue Devils have knocked off six ranked opponents -- #3/3 Ohio State, #3/4 Stanford, #9/10 North Carolina, #12/15 Maryland, #14/15 Oklahoma State and #24/25 James Madison. She notched her fi rst career double-double on Dec. 6 against Southern California with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while hitting 4-of-7 fi eld goals. She also had a career-high 13 points, eight rebounds, a career-high two blocks and a career-high two steals against third-ranked Ohio State. In the two games at the Caribbean Challenge, Vernerey averaged 11.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and hit 61.5 percent of her fi eld goals. Balanced Attack... Through 10 games this season, Duke has featured a very balanced scoring attack. The Blue Devils own two players averaging double-fi gure scoring -- Jasmine Thomas (16.9) and Joy Cheek (11.2). Bridgette Mitchell (8.7), Allison Vernerey (8.9), Krystal Thomas (7.7), Karima Christmas (7.3) and Keturah Jackson (6.1) also are averaging over 6.0 points a contest. Duke registered all five starters scoring double-digits on Nov. 19 against Georgia Southern and eight of the 11 Blue Devils have notched 10+ points in at least one game this season. Since , Duke has notched five starters in double-figure scoring only eight times. Three different players have led Duke in scoring to open the season-- J. Thomas (5), Mitchell (2), Cheek (2), Christmas. Hitting Over the 50.0% Mark... In three games this season, the Blue Devils have shot over 50.0 percent from the fi eld -- versus No. 3 Ohio State (50.0), Marquette (52.5) and Houston Baptist (55.7). In Coach P s three years at Duke, the Blue Devils have hit 50.0 percent from the fi eld in back-to-back games only two times -- the other time was in in the ACC Tournament (vs. Virginia , vs. Florida State ). Last year, Duke hit over 50.0 percent of its fi eld goals a total of four times. Vernerey Giving Good Minutes in the Post... Blue Devil freshman Allison Vernerey continues to give Duke key minutes off the bench in the post so far on the year. The 6-5 center is averaging 8.9 points and 6.1 rebounds on the season. Duke s Jasmine Thomas and Allison Vernerey swept Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, for the week ending Dec. 6, which was announced by the league offi ce on Dec. 7. Thomas averaged 28.5 points over the 11th-ranked Blue Devils 2-0 week, which included wins over No. 3 Ohio State and Southern California, while Vernerey posted her fi rst career double-double against USC and a career-high 13 points versus the Buckeyes. Her 29 points and 10 fi eld goals made against Ohio State were both career highs. The junior guard came back on Sunday and was one point shy of a career high against Southern California as she totaled 28 points and hit a career-high 10-of-10 free throws. For the week, the Fairfax, Va., native hit 40.0 percent of her three-point fi eld goals and went 17-of-18 from the free throw line. Vernerey averaged a double-double in two games versus very good opponents this past week. The freshman from Alsace, France, was solid against Ohio State with a career-high 13 points, career-high two blocks, two steals and eight rebounds. She responded against Southern California by spearheading a comeback as she totaled her fi rst career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to go along with one block and one assist. Junior Jasmine Thomas became just the third player in Duke history and the 13th ACC player to notch a triple-double against Marquette on Nov. 27, She registered a career-high 12 assists, career-high 11 rebounds and 11 points. The Blue Devils came away from the Caribbean Challenge with victories over Western Kentucky (70-47) and Marquette (74-43). Duke shot 49.5 percent from the fi eld and averaged 72.0 points a game, while holding opponents to 28.1 percent shooting and 45.0 points a contest. Over the two games, Jasmine Thomas averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists, while Allison Vernerey (11.0 points), Bridgette Mitchell (10.5 points) and Joy Cheek (10.0 points) each also averaged double-digit points. The Blue Devils were outrebounded, 46-43, against Marquette, which marked the fi rst time this season Duke has been outrebounded. Duke junior Jasmine Thomas has been named one of 50 preseason candidates for the Naismith National Player of the Year trophy. The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the college basketball season. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded at the 2010 NCAA Women s Final Four in San Antonio, Texas. Breaking Down the Exhibition Games... The 6-1 forward has been very involved in the community since arriving at Duke four years ago. She has worked with a group of girls at the Emily K Center, made visits to the Ronald McDonald House, assisted at the Durham Soup Kitchen, helped needy families during Christmas, spoken at the girls club and helped with the Durham Children s Hospital. While an intern at the White House this past summer, Cheek and the other interns held a book drive for the local community. Duke Tabbed No. 6 In Preseason Polls... The Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN released its preseason Division I women s basketball polls with Duke being tabbed No. 6 in both listings. With the Blue Devils ranked in the top 10, it marked the 10th straight year Duke has been tabbed in the top 10 of the preseason Associated Press (AP) rankings. Overall, the Blue Devils have been listed in the top 25 of the AP poll for 191 straight weeks, which is the longest current streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and third nationally. McCallie Enters Third Campaign... After securing her Dream Job in April of 2007, Joanne P. McCallie guided the Blue Devils to a overall record in her fi rst season and then posted a 27-6 mark and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in year two. In three years so far with the Blue Devils, McCallie has led Duke to a overall and a 21-7 league mark. Duke has advanced to the NCAA Tournament both years as well as the ACC Championship. McCallie s group made history in as the Blue Devils became only the second team at Duke to go undefeated in Cameron Indoor Stadium with a 14-0 record. In her 18 years as a head coach, McCallie has led 13 teams to the NCAA Tournament, registered a overall record, was the 2005 National Coach of the Year, won fi ve conference championships and collected win seasons. Other Preseason Rankings... Duke was tabbed fourth nationally in the Athlon Magazine preseason poll, while also being listed sixth by Lindy s Magazine and fi fth in the Sporting News College Basketball Preview issue. Junior Jasmine Thomas was also selected preseason second team All-America by the Sporting News. Experience Returns... Duke returns two starters and nine letterwinners from last season, while losing three seniors -- Chante Black, Carrem Gay and Abby Waner. Both Waner and Black were selected in the WNBA Draft, and Gay signed with a professional team in Israel. The Blue Devils return 58.5 percent of their scoring and 63.3 percent of rebounding from a year ago. Duke returns fi ve players who started at least two games from last year -- Jasmine Thomas (28), Bridgette Mitchell (11), Joy Cheek (16), Keturah Jackson (16) and Karima Christmas (2). Other returning letterwinners include Chelsea Hopkins, Kathleen Scheer and Shay Selby. Blue Devils Add Three Freshmen... Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie added three freshmen for the campaign -- Allison Vernerey (Alsace, France), Janeé Johnson (Matthews, N.C.) and Alexis Rogers (West Chester, Ohio). Vernerey, a 6-5 center, played for France in the U-19 World Championship over the summer, where she averaged 6.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. She notched 15 rebounds, nine points, two blocks and one steal in 26 minutes versus Lithuania to close out the championship. She is also a member of the French National Team. Rogers, who attended Lakota West high school., is a 6-1 wing and was ranked as high as 24th in the Blue Star Report after averaging 15.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.7 assists as a senior. She was the 2009 GMC, Butler and District 15 Player of the Year. Rogers posted 10 double-doubles as a senior and fi nished second in career points (1,027) and rebounds (536) at Lakota West in just three years. Johnson, a 6-1 forward, was tabbed No. 62 in the Blue Star Report in the class rankings. She averaged 12.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 1.6 assists as a senior at Providence Day School. Johnson earned NCISAA All-State fi rst team accolades, while also being named All-Conference, Charlotte Weekly Super Team second team, Charlotte Observer All-Observer third team and Charlotte Observer All-Mecklenburg County second team. Jackson Returns For Fifth Year... Fifth-year senior Keturah Jackson will return for her fi nal year with the Blue Devils after receiving a degree in sociology over the summer. Jackson is attending the Fuqua Business School in at Duke. Over her career, Jackson has seen action in 90 games and made 26 starts. Known best for her defensive play, Jackson has notched 109 steals in 90 games, while averaging 3.2 points and 2.7 rebounds.

Trio of Blue Devils Have Offseason Surgery... Both Chelsea Hopkins and Shay Selby had surgery on their right knees in the offseason by Dr. Alison Toth. A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Hopkins appeared in 20 games as a freshman this past season, while averaging 2.7 points, 1.1 rebounds and hitting 51.9 percent of her fi eld goals. She originally hurt her knee in the Western Kentucky contest on Nov. 28 and missed fi ve games. Hopkins came back to play 16 games following the Christmas holiday. Selby, who is from Cleveland, Ohio, saw action in 26 games in her fi rst year with the Blue Devils. She averaged 2.7 points, while hitting 10-of-24 three-point fi eld goals for a 41.7 percentage. Fifth-year senior Keturah Jackson also had surgery over the summer as she suffered a torn left rotator cuff in a pick-up game at home. As a junior, Jackson averaged 3.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals. A product of Columbia, S.C., she also made 16 starts. Impressive Numbers for Coach P... Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie became one of only two head coaches in Division I history last year to lead two different programs to No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament (Vivian Stringer). Coach P also became one of only three head coaches to lead three different programs to the NCAA Tournament (Gary Blair, Jim Foster and Vivian Stringer). McCallie is also one of only four head coaches to guide three different programs to 25 or more wins in a single season (Vivian Stringer, Jim Foster and Tara VanDerveer). Stellar In The Classroom... The women s basketball program had another stellar year in the classroom in as the Blue Devils registered over a 3.0 grade-point average in both the fall and spring campaigns. Duke notched a grade-point average in the fall and then posted a GPA in the spring last year. A total of eight Blue Devils notched over a 3.0 in the fall. Challenging Schedule Awaits... The schedule is made up of 11 teams that advanced to the 2009 NCAA Tournament, including two that advanced to the NCAA Final Four -- Stanford and National Champion Connecticut. Duke will also face nine squads that are preseason ranked in the Athlon Sports preseason rankings -- Texas A&M, Ohio State, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Connecticut, Maryland, Florida State, Virginia and North Carolina. Connecticut, Stanford and Ohio State are ranked No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 in the preseason rankings. Seven of those nine teams who are preseason ranked are listed in the top 14 of the national rankings. Duke Hosts NCAA Action in 2010 & For the second straight year, Duke University has been selected one of 16 host sites for the NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds, which was released on Oct. 29, 2009 by the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Committee. The Blue Devils will host fi rst and second round action on either Saturday, March 19 and Monday, March 21, 2011 or Sunday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 22, Along with the Blue Devils hosting in Cameron Indoor Stadium, other sites chosen were Albuquerque, New Mexico (New Mexico); Auburn, Alabama (Auburn); Charlottesville, Virginia (Virginia); Cincinnati, Ohio (Xavier); College Park, Maryland (Maryland); Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State); Knoxville, Tennessee (Tennessee); Salt Lake City, Utah (Utah); Spokane, Washington (Gonzaga); Shreveport, Louisiana (Louisiana Tech); Stanford, California (Stanford); Storrs, Connecticut (Connecticut); University Park, Pennsylvania (Penn State); Waco, Texas (Baylor); and Wichita, Kansas (Wichita State). The four selected regional sites are Dayton, Ohio; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Dallas, Texas; and Spokane, Washington. In a vote by the Blue Ribbon Panel, the Duke women s basketball team was selected No. 2 in the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) poll, which was released on Oct. 26, The panel is a contingent of national and local media, as well as school representatives Duke received 10 fi rst place votes, while North Carolina earned 30 fi rst place votes on its way to being picked No. 1. Florida State was third followed by Virginia, Maryland, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Miami, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Clemson and Virginia Tech. The panel also selected a preseason All-ACC squad which included Monica Wright (Virginia), Carolyn Swords (Boston College), Jasmine Thomas (Duke), Jacinta Monroe (Florida State) and Jessica Breland (North Carolina). Wright was also selected Preseason ACC Player of the Year, while North Carolina newcomer Tierra Ruffi n-pratt earned Preseason ACC Freshman of the Year. Thomas, who is a product of Fairfax, Va., came on strong for the Blue Devils as a junior averaging 10.2 points, 3.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals, while starting 28 of 30 games played. Over the fi nal 16 contests of the season, Thomas stepped up her game even more towards the end of the season as she averaged 12.1 points, 3.4 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals the fi nal 16 games of the year.
