5 N.C. CENTRAL AT DUKE JANUARY 3, 2008 BLUE DEVIL GAME NOTES GAME 14 Stellar Defense... Duke is coming off forcing over 30 turnovers in two straight games against Utah Valley and Bucknell prior to the Christmas holiday. At Houston on Dec. 28, Duke forced 20 giveaways. On the season, the Blue Devils have forced opponents to more than 30 turnovers on three occasions, while nine of 13 opponents have given the ball away 20 or more times against Duke. Only two Blue Devil foes have shot over 40.0 percent against Duke this season (Connecticut and Penn State). Cheek Coming On Strong... Sophomore Joy Cheek continues to play well in her starting role she took over the last five games. During the stretch she has averaged 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.0 blocks and 0.6 steals. For the first time in her career, Cheek has scored double-figures in four straight contests. Versus Pittsburgh in the Maggie Dixon Classic, Cheek scored 13 of her team-best 16 points in the second half but her biggest field goal came with 0.3 seconds remaining as she grabbed the rebound off a Chante Black missed jumper and scored the game-winner. She is coming off registering her first double-double of the season and second of her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds at Houston. Over the last four games, Cheek has averaged 16.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 blocks, while hitting 75.0 percent from three-point land and 48.3 percent from the field. Cheek is now averaging 10.3 points a game this season, giving Duke three players averaging double-figure points. Waner Puts Mark In ACC Record Book... One of Duke s oldest records was broken on Dec. 18 against Utah Valley as junior Abby Waner registered a school-record 10 steals, while tying the ACC singlegame mark. Waner totaled five steals in the first half and then had five in the second stanza, while playing only 32 minutes. She became only the 11th player in ACC history to total 10 assists in a game and had the fourthhighest single-game total in the NCAA this season. The previous Duke record was nine held by Missy Anderson (vs. Drake, ) and Kim Matthews (vs. Davidson, ). By notching 19 points and 10 assists for the game, Waner posted her second career double-double. She was also three assists shy of totaling the third triple-double in school history as she finished with seven dishes. Waner s two double-doubles over her career have come with double-figure points/steals and double-figure points/ assists. Life On The Road... The Blue Devils concluded a five-game road trip on Dec. 2 at Penn State. During the road swing, Duke played only one of those contests in the eastern time zone and finished with a 2-3 record on the trip. Duke s schedule is one of, if not the most, demanding schedules Duke has faced over the last number of years with quick turnarounds, travel and tough opponents. During the five-game road trip, the Blue Devils averaged only 60.8 points, hit 41.3 percent of their field goals, 31.3 percent from downtown, and turned the ball over 18.2 times a contest. A couple of notes about Duke s schedule-- Duke played only one home game in the month of November for the third time in school history ( and ). (Prior to , the season started around Thanksgiving so these years do not count); Duke also had only one home game over the first eight contests, which is a school record -- the closest was two home games over the first eight contests in In Duke s nine games on the road this season, the Blue Devils have amassed 11,334 miles traveled to Denver, Colo., Tampa, Fla., St. Thomas, USVI, Nashville, Tenn., University Park, Pa., New York, N.Y. and Houston Black Continues To Play Strong... After missing the entire campaign, junior Chante Black has made her return this season and has been very impressive. On the year, Black is averaging 13.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 2.2 blocks and 1.5 steals per game. The 6-5 center has scored doublefigures in 11 of the 13 contests and was named to the Paradise Jam All-Tournament team. Black has become a go-to player and is showing her improved shooting range this season. She has totaled three double-doubles this year with 16 points and 11 rebounds against South Florida, 10 points and 11 rebounds versus Purdue and 10 points and 10 rebounds at Vanderbilt. She is also leading Duke from the charity stripe, hitting a team-best 33-of-45 attempts. Black is also the only Duke player to start all 13 games this season. Foursome At The Point... 6 N.C. CENTRAL AT DUKE JANUARY 3, 2008 BLUE DEVIL GAME NOTES GAME 14 Player of the Year Lindsey Harding to graduation last spring. The foursome has dished out a combined 99 assists, while committing 77 turnovers on the season. Abby Waner leads the point guards with 21 treys and 24 steals, while Jasmine Thomas is tied with Abby Waner for a team-best 28 assists on the year. Emily Waner has played the fewest minutes on the team, but her 26 assists is tied for third on the Duke squad. The last time Duke had such inexperience at the point guard slot was in the season when Harding was suspended and freshman Wanisha Smith was thrust into the role. Duke totaled a 31-5 overall record and Smith averaged 10.9 points, 4.3 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 32.2 minutes a game. Starting Rotation... Duke broke a string of seven different starting lineups to open as the Blue Devils started the same lineup of Chante Black, Abby Waner, Bridgette Mitchell, Carrem Gay and Emily Waner against Vanderbilt and Penn State. The Blue Devils continued with the theme on Dec. 18 against Utah Valley with their ninth different starting lineup of Black, Waner, Wanisha Smith, Joy Cheek and Jasmine Thomas. Duke has now started the same lineup in the three straight games for the first time this year. In the different lineups, Duke has featured five players starting their first career games with the Blue Devils. In the season opener, Emily Waner made her first career start, in the USF contest Brittany Mitch and Keturah Jackson made their first starts, against UNC Greensboro Bridgette Mitchell started, versus Temple Joy Cheek made her first career start and against Rutgers freshman Jasmine Thomas started. With Duke starting two first timers versus the Bulls, it marked the first time since Nov. 12, 2004 that the Blue Devils have started two or more players for the first time in their career -- Jessica Foley, Caitlin Howe and Chante Black. All 12 players are seeing action in double-figure minutes this season and five Blue Devils are playing over 20 minutes a game. Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie has said all along it doesn t matter who starts the game as the lineup at the end of the game is the most important. She is expecting to use many different starting lineups during the season. Dishing The Rock... Typically Duke is one of the best passing teams in the nation as the Blue Devils have dished out at least 16.9 assists a game dating back to the campaign. Prior to the Utah Valley and Bucknell games when the Blue Devils handed out a total of 50 dishes, Duke was averaging only 14.3 assists. So far this season, Duke is averaging 16.2 assists a game. The Blue Devils have produced more assists than turnovers in five of 13 games this year. Duke has dished out the following assists over the last seven years (17.1), (20.5), (18.2), (20.1), (16.9), (19.4) and (17.0). Through 13 games, Duke has totaled more turnovers (236) than assists (210). The Blue Devils have not posted more turnovers than assists in a single season since the season (579 assists/611 turnovers). Free Throw Woes... Duke continues to struggle at the free throw line this season as the Blue Devils are hitting only 59.4 percent, which ranks last in the ACC. Only Chante Black (73.3), Wanisha Smith (75.0) and Abby Waner (77.8) are hitting above 70.0 percent from the charity stripe. Even though Duke has struggled at the line this year, Carrem Gay, Waner and Keturah Jackson hit key free throws at the end of the Rutgers game on Dec. 6 to earn the victory. The Blue Devils are generally very good shooting free throws as Duke has shot over 70.0 percent for nine straight years. The last time Duke shot below that mark was in as it hit 68.9 percent. From The Field... As with the free throw percentage, Duke continues to struggle shooting from the field and from behind the three-point arc. The Blue Devils are hitting 41.9 percent from the field and 29.0 percent from downtown through 13 contests. With the injuries to Abby Waner and Wanisha Smith, who are two of Duke s most experienced players, a lot of very inexperienced players have seen action early in the season and are trying to get adjusted to a new system. Getting Out Of The Block... Duke has struggled out of the gate in games to start the season and has had to come from behind in nine of the 13 contests -- Houston (down 11-6 at 15:15), Pittsburgh (down 10-4 at 15:46), Rutgers (down 11-2 at 15:32), Penn State (down at 12:47), Vanderbilt (down 7-4 at 15:45), Connecticut (down 13-4 at 14:01), Temple (down 10-7 at 11:29), Purdue (down 9-0 at 13:16) and Denver (down 12-4 at 12:41). Last Time Out... Joy Cheek registered 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Chante Black and Jasmine Thomas added 12 and 11 points, respectively, to lead 13th-ranked Duke over Houston, 84-68, at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston, Texas. Cheek, who registered her first double-double of the season and only the second of her career, scored eight points during a 16-0 Duke run that spanned both halves and turned a close game into a lead with 19 minutes remaining. Duke never led by fewer than 13 after that. Twiggy McIntyre led Houston with 13 points. Tye Jackson had 12 points and nine assists, but also had seven of Houston's 20 turnovers. Duke outrebounded Houston and held the Cougars to 36.2 percent shooting. The Blue Devils played for the first time since a victory over Bucknell and had to shake off the rust early as Houston led after two free throws by Courtney Taylor with 7:02 left in the first half, but Duke went on an 11-0 run for a lead less than four minutes later. Wanisha Smith scored the first four points, and Jasmine Thomas added three during the spurt. Smith, who played in her third straight game since missing four with a hand injury, totaled a season-high eight assists to go along with eight points. Freshman Krystal Thomas made her return to the lineup after missing five games with in injured knee and totaled six points and four rebounds. Overall, Duke had a very balanced scoring attack with 10 of the 12 players scoring in the contest. A Look Back At the Paradise Jam... Duke won two of three games at the 2007 Paradise Jam, but did not play excellent basketball in any of the games. The Blue Devils hit only 38.5 percent from the field, 22.9 percent from three-point land and 46.9 percent from the free throw line. The Blue Devil defense held strong holding opponents to 56.0 points a game and 38.5 percent shooting. Leading the way for Duke was junior center Chante Black, who was named to the All-Tournament team. She averaged 13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.3 steals. Black scored double-figures in all three games, while also totaling a double-double against Purdue with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Jasmine Thomas also played well averaging 10.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks. She scored a season-best 15 points versus Purdue and 11 against Temple in the first two contests. Thomas hit a career-best 2-of-4 treys against Purdue as well. Thomas Makes Splash In St. Thomas... Waner and Jackson iced it by each converting two attempts from the line in the final 11 seconds. Epiphanny Prince had 15 points and Kia Vaughn added 11 rebounds for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights took a four-point lead with 4:19 remaining after a bizarre free-throw attempt that silenced the crowd. Duke apparently thought Vaughn was shooting two free throws when she missed the front end of a 1-and-1 leaving Heather Zurich to scoop up the rebound and make an uncontested layup. Rutgers managed just two points the rest of the way. Rutgers led at the break despite a miserable shooting performance by both clubs. 18 Game 10-- #17/15 Duke 51 Pittsburgh 49 Duke sophomore Joy Cheek scored the gamewinning basket with 1.2 seconds remaining to give the Blue Devils a victory over Pittsburgh in the first game of the Maggie Dixon Classic in Madison Square Garden. Cheek scored 13 of her season-high 16 points in the second half, while Abby Waner added 10 points for the Blue Devils. With 12.7 seconds left and the game tied at 49, Duke drove the length of the court and Chante Black missed a turnaround. Cheek got the rebound and put it in for the game-winner. Shavonte Zellous and Jania Sims both scored 17 points for Pitt. The Panthers held a lead with 6:20 left in the first half before going scoreless over the next nine minutes. Marcedes Walker finally ended the drought with a putback with 17:08 left in the second half. The Blue Devils had dropped three straight games for the first time in a decade before beating Rutgers on Thursday night. With Duke trailing 31-28, Cheek scored all seven points during a 7-2 run that gave the Blue Devils a lead. The teams traded baskets before Duke used an 8-3 spurt capped by Emily Waner s three-pointer as the shot clock expired to take a lead with just over six minutes left. Pitt responded with a 9-2 run to tie the game on Sims layup with 1:13 left. With the game tied at 49, Sims stole the ball from Jasmine Thomas, but Zellous missed a jumper from the wing that would have given the Panthers the lead. Trailing with 6:20 left in the first half, Duke closed with a 6-0 run to tie the game Duke Women s Basketball * Box Scores Game 11-- #14/15 Duke 95 Utah Valley 61 Abby Waner scored 19 points and tied an ACC record with 10 steals as 14th-ranked Duke defeated Utah Valley, 95-61, at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Reserve Carrem Gay scored a season-high 20 points, Joy Cheek scored 13 of her 15 points during the decisive first half and Chante Black also had 15 points for Duke. The Blue Devils forced 39 turnovers, scored 49 points off those miscues and never trailed in cruising to their third straight victory. Waner led the way during Duke's 22-4 run that opened the second half, scoring nine points and capping it with a three-pointer from the deep left wing that made it with about 13 minutes remaining. Waner, who finished three assists shy of the third triple-double in school history, became the 11th player in ACC history with 10 steals, a feat most recently achieved by Miami's Maurita Reed against Wake Forest in February She surpassed the school mark of nine steals that was reached by two players, most recently Missy Anderson against Drake in The Blue Devils got well at undermanned Utah Valley's expense, setting a season-high in scoring, leading by 37 points and meeting little resistance in their 25th straight nonconference victory at home. Robyn Fairbanks scored 17 points on 8-of-23 shooting, and set an arena record with 20 rebounds to lead Utah Valley. The Wolverines, who didn't start a player taller than 6-foot-1, are in the fifth year of their sixyear transition from junior college to Division I. Wanisha Smith returned to the starting lineup for Duke and scored three points after missing four games with a broken bone in her right (shooting) hand. Game 12-- #17/15 Duke 92 Bucknell 49 After averaging barely more than 66 points in its first 10 games, No. 14 Duke broke 90 for the second straight time, defeating Bucknell, 92-49, at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke scored 40 points off 32 Bucknell turnovers, 20 of them steals. All five Duke starters broke double digits with Chante Black and Joy Cheek each getting 19 points and eight rebounds. Cheek's numbers were her career high in points and a season high for boards. Abby Waner added 16 points for Duke, while Jasmine Thomas had 12 points and Wanisha Smith chipped in 11 points. None of Duke's starters played more than 27 minutes. Kesha Champion led Bucknell with 21 points. She hit 7-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-4 shooting on 3-pointers. Duke held Bucknell's Hope Foster to two points. The preseason player of the year in the Patriot League, Foster hit 1-of-5 from the field. Out-rebounded 33-7 on the offensive boards, Bucknell gave up 27 second-chance points to Duke. Duke led by halftime, the best first half of scoring for the Blue Devils so far on the season. Waner hit three three-pointers and had 13 points in the first half. Black had 11 at the half. The Bison managed a single three-point basket by Champion in the first 16:26 of the second half, while Duke used a 10-3 run to stretch its lead to Bucknell missed its last six shots and failed to score in the game's final 6:09. 19 Game 13-- #13/14 Duke 84 Houston 68 Joy Cheek registered 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Chante Black and Jasmine Thomas added 12 and 11 points, respectively, to lead 13th-ranked Duke over Houston, 84-68, at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston, Texas.
