Coming off clinching the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament No. 1 seed and at least a share of the league regular season title on Friday with a victory over No. 5 Miami, the seventh-ranked Duke women s basketball team will travel down Tobacco Road to face North Carolina at 3:00 p.m., in Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C. The contest will be aired live on ESPN2. Calling the action for ESPN2 will be Justin Kutcher (PXP) and LaChina Robinson (Color). The contest can also be heard live on WDNC-AM 620 and via the Blue Devil IMG Network s Steve Barnes (PXP) and Morgan Patrick (Color). Blue Devil head coach Joanne P. McCallie will be looking for her fi rst victory in Chapel Hill since arriving at Duke. Duke has now lost three potential starters -- Richa Jackson, Chloe Wells and Amber Henson since the season started. Jackson had started 17 contests this season, while Wells started 10. Duke Players vs. UNC... Senior Shay Selby has hit 7-of-16 treys and posted double-fi gures on two different occasions against UNC. Allison Vernerey has averaged 8.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks. She has totaled double-fi gure scoring in four of six meetings. Tricia Liston is coming off collecting 23 points in the meeting on Feb. 6 in Durham. She hit 4-of-6 treys, grabbed six boards and had three steals. Freshman Elizabeth Williams had 13 points, 10 rebounds, fi ve assists, six blocks and four steals in the fi rst contest. What Happened in the First Meeting... Tricia Liston started hitting three-pointers, and her Duke teammates quickly got into the act. They all added up to one of the Blue Devils biggest beatdowns of their top rival. No. 5 Duke routed No. 22 North Carolina on Feb. 6 after Liston scored 16 of her 23 points during a decisive fi rst-half run in which the Blue Devils seemingly couldn t miss. Richa Jackson added 17 points for the Blue Devils. They shot 54 percent and led by 41 in claiming their third straight win over their fi ercest rivals - and second-most lopsided in series history, surpassed only by Duke s romp over UNC in Gray fi nished with 15 points and Elizabeth Williams had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Duke, which outscored North Carolina during a 10 1/2 minute stretch late in the fi rst half. Liston hit three of the Blue Devils seven threepointers during that run, and they matched a season high with 10 3s while also racking up 23 assists for the second time in four games. Chay Shegog had 19 points to lead the Tar Heels. They managed just four fi eld goals over the last 13 minutes of the half and had their fi ve-game winning streak snapped. Shay Selby fi nished with 10 points for Duke, which won its 28th straight ACC game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils had 50 points at halftime - their highest-scoring fi rst half against UNC since rolling up 52 on their way to that 43-point romp 12 years ago. They led this one by 30 before they were one minute into the second half. Liston put the Blue Devils ahead to stay with 11 1/2 minutes left in the half with a three-pointer, starting the dominating burst that put them in complete control by halftime. The Blue Devils made 15 of 21 shots to close the half. Jackson s three just inside the six-minute mark made it and pushed Duke s lead into double fi gures to stay, and Gray made it a 20-point game for good when her deep three from the key with just over two minutes left stretched it to Liston capped the burst with - what else? - a three in the fi nal minute that put Duke up Selby s runner just before the buzzer gave the Blue Devils a halftime lead, and she made it a 30-point game with a jumper less than a minute after the break, stretching it to Meanwhile, seemingly nothing went right for the Tar Heels after Brittany Rountree s jumper put them up 10-9 with just over 13 minutes left in the half. Duke has clinched at least a share of the ACC regular season title for the 11th time in school history and the third straight year. The title is the third under the direction of Head Coach Joanne P. Alison Bales accomplished this three different times. On the season, Williams is averaging 14.4 points, 8.4 reb., 3.7 blocks, 1.7 steals and 1.5 assists. She has six double-doubles and one triple-double. Williams had eight blocks at Boston College, which is her second-most in a single-game this season (12 at Wake Forest). On the Road in Duke has posted a 9-2 record this season in road games with its two losses coming against 10th-ranked Kentucky and eighth-ranked Maryland. Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie announced on Feb. 17 that sophomore Richa Jackson will miss the remained of the campaign, after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament of her left knee on Feb. 15 against Virginia Tech. Jackson, who is a product of Midwest City, Okla., started 17 games this season, while averaging 9.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.1 assists. The 6-0 guard had started the past 17 straight games prior to the injury. She ranked sixth overall in fi eld goal percentage (51.1), but in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) game only, she was second (57.1). Jackson also ranked 25th in scoring (11.1) in league contests. Gray Dishing Assists... With a 6.1 assists per game average, Chelsea Gray leads the ACC and ranks 12th nationally. She has posted 166 through 27 contests on the year and is on pace to break the Duke single-season record for assists, which is held by Kira Orr at 170 back in The highest per game assist average in Duke history is 5.2 by Orr in , while Hilary Howard averaged 5.0 in Player of the Year Lists... Freshman Elizabeth Williams has been named one of 20 midseason candidates for the John R. Wooden Award. She is one of only two freshmen on the list and one of four ACC student-athletes selected. Chelsea Gray is one of 20 midseason candidates for the USBWA Player of the Year. Gray has also been named one of eight nominees for the Nancy Leiberman Award, which honors the top point guard in the nation. Talented Sophomore Class... The fi ve-member sophomore class continues to perform well for the Blue Devils as they have scored 61.3 percent of the team s points on the season (1237 of 2017). Two (Chelsea Gray and Haley Peters) are currently starting, while Chloe Wells started the fi rst 10 games and Richa Jackson started 17. Tricia Liston is the fi rst sub off the bench. Both Wells and Jackson are out the rest of the campaign. Coach P Notches 50 Wins... Blue Devil head coach Joanne P. McCallie notched her 50th ACC regular season win at Virginia Tech on Jan. 15. She owns a mark and became the second-quickest ACC coach to reach the 50-win mark in only 61 contests. Kay Yow of N.C. State accomplished the mark in only 57 games (50-7). Freshman Elizabeth Williams registered just the fi fth triple-double in school history and the fi rst by a freshman at Duke on Jan. 6 at Wake Forest with 18 points, 16 rebounds and an ACC-record 12 blocked shots. The triple-double with blocks marks just the second in ACC history. Overall, the ACC has 15 players notch a triple-double, but Williams is the fi rst freshman. Earlier this season, Chelsea Gray had a tripledouble with 14 points, a school-record 13 assists and 11 rebounds against Pittsburgh on Dec. 4. Duke is the only team in the nation with two players who have notched a triple-double in Only six players have notched triple-doubles this season, while Victoria McGowan of Stetson has two. Williams owns eight games with 10+ rebounds and six double-doubles. Good Defensive Effort... In 27 games, Duke has forced 22.0 turnovers per game and created 657 points off those turnovers. The Blue Devils are averaging 12.9 steals a contest. In the NCAA Stats... Chelsea Gray s 13 assists versus Pittsburgh is tied for the fi fth-most in a single game this season. Gray also ranks 12th in assists per game (6.0) and 37th in assist turnover ratio (1.8). Elizabeth Williams is third in blocked shots (3.8) nationally and has the highest per game average of any freshman in the nation. As a team, Duke ranks eighth in fi eld goal percentage (46.7), 24th in scoring defense (53.4), seventh in steals (13.0), 16th in rebound margin (8.3), 15th in assists (16.5) and 11th in blocks (5.9) -- updated through games of Feb. 23. Henson Has Surgery; Miss Duke freshman Amber Henson had surgery on Friday, Jan. 6 at the Duke Ambulatory Surgery Center and will miss the remainder of the campaign. Henson s surgery was performed by Dr. Alison Toth to stabilize the right patella, which is an injury she has dealt with since high school. Henson, who is out of Tampa, Fla., played in only eight contests averaging 1.8 points and 1.9 rebounds. The 6-4 forward was an ACC Newcomer to Watch in the preseason, after a standout high school career at Walter L. Sickles H.S. Henson was a three-time Parade All-America honoree and was the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. She averaged 20.7 points, 13.6 rebounds, 6.7 blocks and 2.5 assists in her fi nal year.
