The sixth-ranked Duke women s basketball team (15-3, 3-0 ACC) will return to Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) action on Thursday, Jan. 21 as the Blue Devils will host Virginia Tech (11-6, 1-2 ACC) at 7:00 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Fans can hear the Blue Devils on the Duke ISP Radio Network on WDNC AM 620 with Steve Barnes (PXP) and Morgan Patrick (Color) calling the action. Duke is currently ranked No. 6 in both the Associated Press and No. 7 in the ESPN/USA Today Division I Coaches Polls. The Blue Devils will next travel to College Park, Md., where they will take on Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 8:00 p.m., on Fox Sports Net. The Terrapins own a 48-game home winning streak entering their contest against Miami on Jan. 21. Noting Duke... A Look At Virginia Tech... Virginia Tech enters the contest on Thursday with an 11-6 overall and 1-2 ACC mark under the direction of Beth Dunkenburger. Leading the Hokies on the year has been Lindsay Biggs (11.9 points, 40 treys), Utahya Drye (11.5 points, 6.8 rebounds) and Alyssa Fenyn (9.6 points, 5.3 rebounds). In road games on the season, Virginia Tech owns a 1-4 mark. The Series With Virginia Tech... Duke and Virginia Tech will meet for the 16th time in school history. The Blue Devils lead the series, 13-2, with Duke winning the past 11 games in a row. In contests played in Durham, N.C., Duke has won fi ve games in a row and has posted a 7-1 overall record. The last loss to the Hokies was on Nov. 17, 1998 (72-70 in Durham). Blue Devil Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie will face Virginia Tech for the sixth time in her 18-year coaching career and owns a 4-1 record. She has won four straight games against VT since joining the Duke program. W 11 Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes... Duke will look to claim its 10th straight ACC victory in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Thursday, which dates back to the season. The Blue Devils have not lost back-to-back games in Cameron Indoor Stadium since the season, when Duke fell to 12th-ranked Virginia (87-66) and Clemson (90-82). In nine home games this season, junior Jasmine Thomas is averaging 16.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.8 steals. She has hit 36.4 percent from downtown in those contests. She has hit at least one three-pointer in all nine home games. Senior Keturah Jackson has matched a career high with three three-pointers made in a single season. Over her four years, she has hit eight treys. She hit her third of the year against UConn on Monday. To show how tough Duke s schedule has been this year, the Blue Devils went up against eight undefeated teams this season -- Connecticut (17-0), Ohio State (8-0), James Madison (7-0), Stanford (7-0), Western Kentucky (3-0), Georgia Southern (1-0), Houston Baptist (0-0) and Texas A&M (0-0). In three years at Duke, Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie has notched four victories against top-fi ve ranked teams -- #3/3 Ohio State in , #3/4 Stanford in , while knocking off #4/3 Rutgers and #5/4 Maryland in Over the last seven games, Jasmine Thomas is averaging 15.1 points, 4.4 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 steals. She has hit 40.0 percent from downtown. Junior Karima Christmas has registered 46 steals so far on the season, which is a new single season career high. Duke is currently ranked No. 7 in the latest RPI by Jeff Sagarin -- Connecticut (106.91), Stanford (101.12), Tennessee (98.46), Nebraska (98.14), Notre Dame (95.74), Ohio State (95.16) and Duke (94.81). The next closest ACC school is Florida State at No. 20 (87.15). Junior Jasmine Thomas has hit 32 three-pointers in only 17 games this season. As a freshman, she hit 24 in 35 games and as a sophomore she hit 28 in 30 games. Junior Krystal Thomas has moved into eighth place on Duke s all-time blocked shots list with 104. She is 26 blocked shots shy of seventh place all-time on the Blue Devil charts. Since Duke went to the smaller lineup, freshman center Allison Vernerey s minutes have dropped. Over the last six games, she is averaging only 4.0 points and 4.2 rebounds in only 14.5 minutes. Chante Black scored 11 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Duke, which led at halftime en route to its 11th consecutive victory over the Hokies (11-16, 1-11). Duke blew open the game midway through the fi rst half, scoring 14 points off steals during their spurt. Virginia Tech, which took a lead on a jumper by Lindsay Biggs with 10:23 remaining in the half, went scoreless for the next 6:50. The Hokies committed eight turnovers during that stretch, including four in a row in a 50-second span that resulted in Duke layups. Black and Gay grabbed six offensive rebounds apiece for the Blue Devils, who outrebounded the Hokies The Blue Devils, who entered the game averaging a school-record 13.7 steals per game, posted 16 steals against Virginia Tech. Duke Players Vs. Virginia Tech... Senior Keturah Jackson netted a career high of 12 points to go along with four rebounds and one blocked shot last year at Virginia Tech. She hit 5-of-6 fi eld goals in the contest. As a freshman, Krystal Thomas had 10 points, fi ve rebounds, one block, one steal and one assist against the Hokies. In six games against Virginia Tech, senior Joy Cheek has posted double-digit scoring once as she posted 14 points as a sophomore on 6-of-8 fi eld goals. Junior Jasmine Thomas has hit only 6-of-34 fi eld goals for a 17.6 percentage. She is 1-of-11 from downtown in four games. At Home in Cameron Indoor Stadium... Duke had its 23-game winning streak in Cameron Indoor Stadium come to an end on Monday, Jan. 18 against No. 1 Connecticut. During that streak, the Blue Devils knocked off six ranked opponents -- #3/3 Ohio State, #3/4 Stanford, #9/10 North Carolina, #12/15 Maryland, #14/15 Oklahoma State and #24/25 James Madison. The undefeated season in at home marked only the second unblemished Cameron Indoor Stadium record in school history ( ). In three years at Duke, Head Coach Joanne P. Call the Duke Ticket Offi ce at (919) or head to to purchase your tickets now. Nearing 1, Senior Joy Cheek is closing in on 1,000 career points as she now owns 980 for her career in 119 games. She will become the 25th player in Duke history to reach the 1,000-point mark. On the Boards... So far this season, Duke has outrebounded its opponents in 16-of-18 contests and 11 straight. The only two games the Blue Devils have not outrebounded their opponent was against Marquette and Ohio State, which were both victories. Duke s rebound margin going into the Jan. 18 game ranked sixth nationally. The Blue Devils outrebounded UConn, 35-31, and now owns an 11.7 rebound margin. The Blue Devils have averaged a rebounding margin over the last nine contests. Duke has pulled down 20+ offensive rebounds in seven games on the year. In games played on January 21st, Duke has tallied a 2-5 record over the past 34 seasons. Most recently, in 1992, the Blue Devils fell to Florida State, 55-67, in a road ACC match up. In 1980, Duke took a close ACC victory at Georgia Tech. 13-of-38 treys for a 34.2 percentage. Thomas notched 26 points and nine rebounds against 16th-ranked Texas A&M, while totaling 29 points, two assists and two steals against third-ranked Ohio State. She had 14 points against Stanford and notched a double-double against James Madison with 13 points and 11 rebounds. At Miami, she scored 15 of her 16 points in the second half and was huge down the stretch. Thomas had 17 points, four assists and three rebounds against UConn. As a team, Duke s defense has struggled against ranked opponents allowing 73.5 points per game. Creating Turnovers... Duke s defense continues to force 22.6 turnovers a contest so far this season, which is the second-highest per game average in school history. Wooden Award Candidate... Duke junior Jasmine Thomas has been named one of the 21 midseason candidates for the John R. Wooden Award, which was released on Wednesday by the Los Angeles Athletic Club s John R. Wooden Award Committee. The 34th annual Wooden Award ceremony, which will include the announcement of the Men s and Women s Wooden Award winner, and the presentation of the Legends of Coaching Award to Florida s Billy Donovan, will take place on April 9, Against Ranked Opponents... The Blue Devils own a 3-3 record this year against ranked opponents. So far this year, the Blue Devils defeated third-ranked Ohio State, 25th-ranked Miami and 25th-ranked James Madison, while falling to second-ranked Ohio State, 16thranked Texas A&M and No. 1 Connecticut. Junior Jasmine Thomas has been on fi re against ranked opponents as she has averaged 19.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals. She has hit Thomas Gets Fired Up... Being taken out of the starting lineup fi red up Krystal Thomas on Jan. 3 against Providence, as the junior center came off the bench to register a career-high 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four blocked shots in 25 minutes. In the previous contest at Temple, Thomas played 25 minutes, took zero shots, had four rebounds and had three turnovers. Jasmine Thomas has developed into one of the top guards in the nation as a junior, after working very hard over the summer of On the season, she is averaging 15.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.4 steals. In the ACC stats, she ranks fourth in scoring (15.7), fi fth in assists (4.9), third in free throw percentage (80.6), seventh in steals (2.4), sixth in three-point fi eld goals made (1.8) and third in assist/turnover ratio (1.6). She turned in one of the most dominating performances ever seen in Cameron Indoor Stadium against third-ranked Ohio State on Thursday, Dec. 3. Duke s Jasmine Thomas and Allison Vernerey swept Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, for the week ending Dec. 6, which was announced by the league offi ce on Dec. 7. Thomas averaged 28.5 points over the 11th-ranked Blue Devils 2-0 week, which included wins over No. 3 Ohio State and Southern California, while Vernerey posted her fi rst career double-double against USC and a career-high 13 points versus the Buckeyes. Thomas averaged 28.5 points, 2.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 rebounds against Ohio State and Southern California. Her 29 points and 10 fi eld goals made against Ohio State were both career highs. The junior guard came back on Sunday and was one point shy of a career high against Southern California as she totaled 28 points and hit a career-high 10-of-10 free throws. For the week, the Fairfax, Va., native hit 40.0 percent of her three-point fi eld goals and went 17-of-18 from the free throw line. Vernerey averaged a double-double in two games versus very good opponents this past week. The freshman from Alsace, France, was solid against Ohio State with a career-high 13 points, career-high two blocks, two steals and eight rebounds. She responded against Southern California by spearheading a comeback as she totaled her fi rst career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to go along with one block and one assist. The center s 12 rebounds was also a career-high. She hit 10-of-17 fi eld goals on the week for a 58.8 percentage. Recapping the Caribbean Challenge... The Blue Devils came away from the Caribbean Challenge with victories over Western Kentucky (70-47) and Marquette (74-43). Duke shot 49.5 percent from the fi eld and averaged 72.0 points a game, while holding opponents to 28.1 percent shooting and 45.0 points a contest. Over the two games, Jasmine Thomas averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists, while Allison Vernerey (11.0 points), Bridgette Mitchell (10.5 points) and Joy Cheek (10.0 points) each also averaged double-digit points. The Blue Devils were outrebounded, 46-43, against Marquette, which marked the fi rst time this season Duke has been outrebounded. Duke has now registered a 16-1 record during the last 11 years at tropical destinations (Cancun in 2000, 2006 and 2009, Bahamas in 1999 and 2004 and St. Thomas in 2002 and 2007)... the only losses for Duke in the Caribbean were in 1997 with a loss to eighth-ranked Illinois in San Juan, Puerto Rico and in the 2007 Paradise Jam to second-ranked Connecticut, Thomas Selected Naismith Candidate... Duke junior Jasmine Thomas has been named one of 50 preseason candidates for the Naismith National Player of the Year trophy. The watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club s Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the college basketball season. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T will be awarded at the 2010 NCAA Women s Final Four in San Antonio, Texas. Breaking Down the Exhibition Games... In two exhibition games against Wingate and Alaska Anchorage, the Blue Devils averaged 99.5 points and held their opponents to only 31.5 points and a 22.1 fi eld goal percentage. Five Duke players averaged double-fi gure scoring -- Jasmine Thomas (18.5 points), Allison Vernerey (17.0 points), Karima Christmas (15.0 points), Joy Cheek (13.0 points) and Kathleen Scheer (10.5 points). Duke shot 50.7 percent from the fi eld and 45.5 percent from three-point land as fi ve different Blue Devils hit at least one three-pointer. A total of 19 blocked shots were featured, eight by Krystal Thomas and four by Vernerey. Cheek Nets Honor... Duke senior Joy Cheek has been named one of 30 candidates for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classifi ed as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition. In the classroom, Cheek posted a 3.10 GPA in the fall of 2008 and earned ACC Honor Roll accolades in Over the summer of 2009, Cheek was selected to perform an internship at the White House in the Vice President s Offi ce in Economic Policy. She was there for 14 weeks and got a chance to look from the inside-out at the operations of the White House and the federal government. The 6-1 forward has been very involved in the community since arriving at Duke four years ago. She has worked with a group of girls at the Emily K Center, made visits to the Ronald McDonald House, assisted at the Durham Soup Kitchen, helped needy families during Christmas, spoken at the girls club and helped with the Durham Children s Hospital. While an intern at the White House this past summer, Cheek and the other interns held a book drive for the local community. Experience Returns... Duke returns two starters and nine letterwinners from last season, while losing three seniors -- Chante Black, Carrem Gay and Abby Waner. Both Waner and Black were selected in the WNBA Draft, and Gay signed with a professional team in Israel. The Blue Devils return 58.5 percent of their scoring and 63.3 percent of rebounding from a year ago. Duke returns fi ve players who started at least two games from last year -- Jasmine Thomas (28), Bridgette Mitchell (11), Joy Cheek (16), Keturah Jackson (16) and Karima Christmas (2). Other returning letterwinners include Chelsea Hopkins, Kathleen Scheer and Shay Selby. Blue Devils Add Three Freshmen... Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie added three freshmen for the campaign -- Allison Vernerey (Alsace, France), Janeé Johnson (Matthews, N.C.) and Alexis Rogers (West Chester, Ohio). Vernerey, a 6-5 center, played for France in the U-19 World Championship over the summer, where she averaged 6.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. She notched 15 rebounds, nine points, two blocks and one steal in 26 minutes versus Lithuania to close out the championship. She is also a member of the French National Team. Rogers, who attended Lakota West high school., is a 6-1 wing and was ranked as high as 24th in the Blue Star Report after averaging 15.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.7 assists as a senior. She was the 2009 GMC, Butler and District 15 Player of the Year. Rogers posted 10 double-doubles as a senior and fi nished second in career points (1,027) and rebounds (536) at Lakota West in just three years. Johnson, a 6-1 forward, was tabbed No. 62 in the Blue Star Report in the class rankings. She averaged 12.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 1.6 assists as a senior at Providence Day School. Johnson earned NCISAA All-State fi rst team accolades, while also being named All-Conference, Charlotte Weekly Super Team second team, Charlotte Observer All-Observer third team and Charlotte Observer All-Mecklenburg County second team. Impressive Numbers for Coach P... Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie became one of only two head coaches in Division I history last year to lead two different programs to No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament (Vivian Stringer). Coach P also became one of only three head coaches to lead three different programs to the NCAA Tournament (Gary Blair, Jim Foster and Vivian Stringer). Challenging Schedule Awaits... The schedule is made up of 11 teams that advanced to the 2009 NCAA Tournament, including two that advanced to the NCAA Final Four -- Stanford and National Champion Connecticut. Duke will also face nine squads that are preseason ranked in the Athlon Sports preseason rankings -- Texas A&M, Ohio State, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Connecticut, Maryland, Florida State, Virginia and North Carolina. Duke Hosts NCAA Action in 2010 & For the second straight year, Duke University has been selected one of 16 host sites for the NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds, which was released on Oct. 29, 2009 by the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Committee. The Blue Devils will host fi rst and second round action on either Saturday, March 19 and Monday, March 21, 2011 or Sunday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 22, Along with the Blue Devils hosting in Cameron Indoor Stadium, other sites chosen were Albuquerque, New Mexico (New Mexico); Auburn, Alabama (Auburn); Charlottesville, Virginia (Virginia); Cincinnati, Ohio (Xavier); College Park, Maryland (Maryland); Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State); Knoxville, Tennessee (Tennessee); Salt Lake City, Utah (Utah); Spokane, Washington (Gonzaga); Shreveport, Louisiana (Louisiana Tech); Stanford, California (Stanford); Storrs, Connecticut (Connecticut); University Park, Pennsylvania (Penn State); Waco, Texas (Baylor); and Wichita, Kansas (Wichita State). Thomas, who is a product of Fairfax, Va., came on strong for the Blue Devils as a junior averaging 10.2 points, 3.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals, while starting 28 of 30 games played. Over the fi nal 16 contests of the season, Thomas stepped up her game even more towards the end of the season as she averaged 12.1 points, 3.4 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals the fi nal 16 games of the year.
