Storylines... Two of Duke s most experienced players -- Abby Waner and Wanisha Smith -- continued to hobble with injuries. Other Blue Devils have picked up the scoring load but the team features one of the youngest squads in school history as of late. Waner made her return to the lineup against Connecticut and was held scoreless in 22 minutes. Junior Carrem Gay has pulled down a career-high-tying 12 rebounds on two occasions this season -- Temple and Denver. Duke suffered its worst loss on Sunday versus second-ranked Connecticut since Nov. 21, 1998 when 11thranked Notre Dame defeated the Blue Devils, The Blue Devils also had injuries during this time and later that season advanced to the National Championship game before falling to Purdue. After outrebounding its opponents in the first four games, Duke has been outrebounded by Temple (42-41) and Connecticut (35-28). Senior Wanisha Smith became the 22nd player in Duke history to register 1,000 career points as she scored a field goal in the first half against second-ranked Connecticut. She now owns 1,001 points in 110 games. Duke had its 107 straight week streak of being ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll come to an end this week as the Blue Devils dropped to 11th. In six games this season, Duke has totaled five different Blue Devils lead the team in scoring -- Abby Waner at Denver, Chante Black vs. South Florida and Connecticut, Krystal Thomas vs. UNC Greensboro, Jasmine Thomas vs. Purdue and Carrem Gay along with Black against Temple. Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie has faced Vanderbilt one time over her 16 years as a head coach. Her Michigan State squad defeated the Commodores, 76-64, on March 27, 2005 in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. So far this season, junior Chante Black is getting to the free throw line as she leads the Blue Devils with 29 attempts and 22 made for a 75.9 percentage. The next closest Blue Devils are Wanisha Smith hitting 7-of-12 and Carrem Gay hitting 7-of-10 attempts. Duke has held a points in the paint advantage in the six games this season. Phone interviews with out of town media can also be arranged. All interview requests should be made at least one day in advance and the best time for interviews is generally before or after practice. Sports Information Office Address: Duke Sports Information 115 Cameron Indoor Stadium Durham, N.C A Look Back At the Paradise Jam... The Blue Devil defense held strong holding opponents to 56.0 points a game and 38.5 percent shooting. Fourth-ranked Duke improved to 8-0 on the season as the Blue Devils downed 11 th -ranked Vanderbilt, 69-48, on Dec. 7, Duke received a game-high 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks in 35 minutes from Alison Bales, while Abby Waner added 14 points, Lindsey Harding had 15 and Wanisha Smith chipped in a season-high 13 points. Carla Thomas had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Vanderbilt (8-1). Dee Davis chipped in 12. Vanderbilt s Caroline Williams averaged 15.6 points going into the game but was held to six by Duke. With 4:18 left, an intentional foul on Williams and technical called on Vanderbilt s bench sparked eight straight points for Duke that sealed the win. Bales and Carrem Gay each grabbed nine boards to help Duke dominate inside with a advantage in rebounds. Bales went 5-for-7 from the paint in scoring 11 points in the first half, which ended with Duke leading Vanderbilt was within after two free throws by Thomas with 5:53 to play. Harding knocked down two free throws on the technical, and Waner hit one of two free throws off the intentional foul. The Blue Devils will play their fourth straight road contest when they hit the court at Vanderbilt on Wednesday. Duke will also play its sixth road game out of seven total contests this season. Duke is in the middle of a five-game road swing as the Blue Devils will travel to Penn State on Sunday, Dec. 2. The schedule is one of, if not the most, demanding schedules Duke has faced over the last number of years with quick turnarounds, travel and tough opponents.
