After being in Riviera Maya, Mexico for six days, the Duke women s basketball team (6-1) has returned home and will host Minnesota (4-1) Thursday, Dec. 3 as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7 p.m. Thursday s contest will be aired live on ESPN3 with Ryan Craig (PXP) and Debbie Taylor (Color) calling the action. The game will also be carried live on the Blue Devil IMG Sports Network on WDNC 620 AM, 99.3 FM, 96.5 FM and with Steve Barnes (PXP) and Morgan Patrick (Color) on the air. What is Next?... The Blue Devils will hit the road for Columbia, S.C., as Duke will travel to face second-ranked South Carolina Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes... Azurá Stevens currently ranks seventh nationally in double-doubles (4), 18th in blocks (2.86), 33rd in fi eld goal percentage (59.4), 42nd in rebounds (10.0) and 48th in points per game (18.9). Freshman Haley Gorecki has hit a threepointer in each of her last three games, including 7-of-13 overall for a 53.8 percentage. Rookie point guard Kyra Lambert owns a 17/9 assist/turnover ratio so far on the season (1.9 per game). Blue Devil sophomore Azurá Stevens has seven double-doubles over her last 13 collegiate games. Minnesota holds a 4-1 overall record, but is coming off its fi rst loss of the season to Auburn, The Gophers currently rank fourth nationally with 11.0 three-pointers made per game and have hit 55 in fi ve contests. Rachel Banham (25.0 points, 20 treys), Carlie Wagner (18.6 points, 11 treys), Mikayla Bailey (14.6 points, 19 treys) and Jessie Edwards (7.4 points) have led Minnesota on the season. Duke owns a 2-1 mark at home this season with wins over Army and Winthrop. Azurá Stevens has averaged 20.7 points, 14.7 rebounds, 4.3 blocks, 1.7 steals and 1.0 assists in the three home matches. She has hit 59.1 percent of her fi eld goals. Rebecca Greenwell has hit 8-of-20 treys and 51.5 percent of her fi eld goals, while averaging 17.3 points. 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals at home this season. Recapping the Cancun Challenge... After opening with a victory over a solid Idaho team, the Blue Devils played their best basketball of the season against Iowa State and Texas State winning by a combined 89 points. For the three games, Duke averaged 81.7 points, hit 51.6 percent of its fi eld goals, dished 18.3 assists a game, averaged 11.0 steals and held opponents to 28.0 percent from the fi eld. Azurá Stevens was named MVP of the Mayan Tournament, after averaging 18.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, 1.0 steals and 1.7 assists. She hit 59.5 percent of her fi eld goals. Rebecca Greenwell earned All-Tournament accolades as well with averages of 13.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.0 assists. She drained seven treys over three contests. Freshman Haley Gorecki averaged 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals in her last two games, while hitting 6-of-9 treys. Freshman Guards... The Blue Devils feature two freshman guards this season with Kyra Lambert and Angela Salvadores. It marks the fi rst time since that Duke has registered two freshman guards starting. The last duo were Patti Thomasson and Margo Walsh. Coach P owns two rookie starters for the fi rst time since when her Michigan State squad had Kristin Haynie and Lindsay Bowen. 3 Duke Basketball Stevens Putting Up Monster Numbers... Duke sophomore Azurá Stevens has been putting up impressive numbers to open the campaign. She registered four straight double-doubles during one stretch where she averaged 21.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, 4.0 blocks, 1.5 steals and 1.3 assists. She also hit 60.7 percent from the fi eld. Stevens became the fi rst Duke player since Chante Black in to register four consecutive games with double-doubles. Stevens currently leads the ACC in rebounding with a 10.0 per game average and ranks third in scoring (18.9). She also ranks fourth in fi eld goal percentage (59.4) and fi rst in blocks (2.9). Salvadores Makes First Starts... Duke highly rated freshman Angela Salvadores made her fi rst collegiate starts in the Cancun Challenge and averaged 6.0 assists, 7.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals. She is coming off dishing a career-high eight assists against Texas State. Salvadores was fl irting with a triple-double with nine points, eight assists and six rebounds. Belton Makes Season Debut... Lyneé Belton made her debut against Army Nov. 22 as she saw action in 10 minutes, while collecting four points and one rebound. She hit 2-of-3 fi eld goals. Belton had been recovering from a torn ACL suffered Dec. 17, 2014 versus Oklahoma. Henson Takes Leave of Absence... Duke head women s basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie announced Nov. 22 that center Amber Henson will take an indefi nite leave of absence from the program, effective immediately. At this time, it is in Amber s best interest to take time away from basketball to focus on her personal well-being, McCallie said. We will continue to be in full support of Amber, and hope for her return to our program in the future. Henson, a graduate student from Tampa, Fla., has played in three games and averaged 1.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest this year. In 71 career games at Duke, she has averaged 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds. The Turnover Story... After turning the ball over 20 or more times in each of the fi rst three games and four out of the fi rst fi ve, the Blue Devils combined for only 29 giveaways against Iowa State and Texas State. Duke is averaging 19.3 per game, which is the most in the ACC. It marked the fi rst time in school history a Blue Devil team opened with three consecutive games with 20 or more turnovers. Block Party... Duke matched a school and ACC single game record with 16 blocked shots against Winthrop. It marked the third time by a Duke team and the fourth time overall in ACC history that a team has swatted 16 shots. The 16 blocks was a Cameron Indoor Stadium record as the fi rst two times took place on the road at Ball State and Wake Forest. Azurá Stevens swatted eight shots in the contest, which was tied for the fi fth most in a single game at Duke. The eight blocks by Stevens and 16 swats as a team are NCAA bests through the opening weekend of action. Rookies in the Lineup... Duke featured two freshmen in the starting lineup in the season opener against Penn. It marked the second time at Duke under McCallie the Blue Devils featured two freshmen in the opening day lineup, including the second straight season. Rebecca Greenwell and Azurá Stevens started last year as well. In school history, Duke has featured two rookies in the starting lineup to open the season only six times. Azurá A Young Lineup... The Blue Devils started a lineup in the season opener at Penn that included two freshmen, two sophomores and one graduate student. The starters against Winthrop were even younger with the addition of sophomore Erin Mathias. The Blue Devils featured two freshmen and three sophomores to open the contest. One of Tallest Teams... After having the tallest team in school history in , the Blue Devils feature the fourth-tallest team in school history this season, standing inches (6-1). Duke is the tallest team in the ACC with a 6-1 average, while fi ve other teams hold an average of 6-0. The Blue Devils feature nine players standing 6-0 or taller and six at 6-3 or better on the roster. The six players at 6-3 or taller are the most in the ACC. Georgia Tech is the closest with fi ve. Blue Devil sophomore Azurá Stevens is the second-tallest player in the ACC this season with a 6-6 frame. Pitt s Bubbles Anderson (6-11) is the tallest in the league. Watch the Blue Devils... After going through a season ago with a limited number of guards, the Blue Devils reloaded in with the No. 1 class in the nation, including fi ve guards. McCallie Radio show dates have been announced and the next show will take place Tuesday, Dec. 8 at Tobacco Road Sports Café in Durham, N.C. The show will air from 7-8 p.m., and will be aired live on WDNC AM 620. McCallie along with host Morgan Patrick, are in their ninth season together with the Coach P Show. After missing the fi nal 11 games of her sophomore season with a shoulder injury, Oderah Chidom is back and ready to go for the campaign. She has appeared in 58 career games with the Blue Devils. Wins Last Six Years... Over the last six years, Duke owns the sixth-most wins in NCAA Division I -- Connecticut (221), Notre Dame (203), Baylor (200), Stanford (196), Tennessee (179) and Duke (173) - numbers are heading into the season. Record-Breaking Freshman Seasons... Second year Blue Devils Rebecca Greenwell and Azurá Stevens look to build off record-breaking freshman campaigns as they enter their sophomore seasons. Stevens collected six Duke freshman records -- fi eld goals made (194 - tied), rebounds (271), offensive rebounds (120), double-fi gure scoring games (28 - tied), double-doubles (10 - tied) and double-fi gure rebound games (12). Stevens also ranked fourth in points (466), tied third in fi eld goals attempted (379), second in defensive rebounds (151), tied fi fth in 20-point scoring games (5) and seventh in minutes played (950). She pulled down 271 boards to tie for eighth on the Duke single-season rebound list, her 120 offensive 4 rebounds ranked tied seventh and 10 double-doubles ranked tied eighth. Greenwell set a total of fi ve Blue Devil freshman records in fi eld goals attempted (396), three-pointers made (72), three-pointers attempted (202), double-fi gure scoring games (28-tied) and minutes played (1171). She ranked third in scoring (476), seventh in fi eld goals made (157), seventh in rebounds (187), tied third in defensive rebounds (141), tied fi fth in double-doubles (5), third in 20-point scoring games (8) and sixth in double-fi gure rebound games (5). In the single-season record book, Greenwell collected a school-record 202 three-pointers attempted, while ranking third with 72 three-pointers made. She was only one minute shy of breaking the minutes played record (1171). Salvadores Earns National Preseason Honors... Blue Devil freshman guard Angela Salvadores was selected the preseason National Freshman of the Year by Lindy s Magazine. Salvadores, a product of Leon, Spain, was selected MVP of the 2015 U18 World Championship over the summer, after averaging a tournament-best 20.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists in eight contests. Salvadores also led the U19 World Championship in scoring with an 18.4 scoring average in Russia. The 5-10 guard burst onto the national scene during the summer of 2014 as she was named MVP of the U17 FIBA World Championship in Czech Republic. Salvadores scored 40 points in the championship game against the United States as she hit 16-of-29 fi eld goals and 5-of-7 treys. Her 19.9 points per game led the championship. Stevens Earns Preseason All-America... Duke sophomore Azurá Stevens was selected preseason Second Team All-America in both the Athlon and The Sporting News magazines. Stevens, a native of Raleigh, N.C., averaged 14.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals as a rookie with the Blue Devils. The 6-5 wing received Second Team All-ACC Honors and All-ACC Freshman team accolades this past season. Stevens set Duke freshman records for fi eld goals made (194), rebounds (271), offensive rebounds (120), double-fi gure scoring games (28), double-doubles (10) and double-fi gure rebound games (12). Challenging Schedule... Duke features a very challenging schedule in as the Blue Devils will face eight teams listed in the preseason Associated Press ledger. In non-conference play before the new year, Duke will play at second-ranked South Carolina, host 13thranked Texas A&M and travel to 18th-ranked Kentucky. Trio of Blue Devils Earn Medals... A trio of Blue Devils represented their home countries over the summer and won gold medals in international competitions. Azurá Stevens helped lead the USA Basketball Women s U19 World Championship team to an 8-0 record and the gold medal in Chekhov, Russia. She averaged 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds as she started all eight games. Duke athletic trainer Summer McKeehan traveled with Stevens and the U19 squad and received a medal as well. Angela Salvadores represented her home country of Spain in the U18 World Championship and won the gold medal in Slovenia. She averaged 20.0 points, which led all scorers in the tournament. Salvadores also played in the U19 World Championship and her Spain squad lost in the Bronze medal game. 6 Duke Basketball a tournament-best 18.4 points a game. Brown Transfers to Duke... Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie announced over the summer the signing of junior guard Lexie Brown. Brown will sit out the campaign due to NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the season. A 5-9 guard from Suwanee, Ga., Brown played the last two seasons at Maryland where she was a 2015 Associated Press Third Team All-America, All-Big Ten First Team, All-Big Ten Defensive Team and Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player as a sophomore. Brown averaged 13.3 points, 4.5 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 steals, while draining 69 three-pointers. Brown started all 36 contests and averaged 31.6 minutes as a sophomore guiding the Terrapins to a second straight NCAA Final Four appearance. She totaled six games with 20 or more points, including a season-high 27 points against Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament. Brown drained at least one three-pointer in 33 games, including a season-high fi ve against Princeton in the NCAA Tournament. Duke In the Preseason All-ACC... The ACC released the preseason women s basketball polls at the annual media day in Greensboro, N.C., with the Blue Devils tabbed No. 4 in a vote by the Blue Ribbon Panel and 15 league head coaches. Duke received 638 points by 51 Blue Ribbon Panel voters. The Blue Devils snapped a streak of 14 straight years of being selected in the top three of the ACC preseason poll. Defending ACC Champion Notre Dame totaled 753 points and 41 fi rst place votes to take the top slot, while Florida State (8 fi rst place votes), Louisville (2 fi rst place votes), Duke, Syracuse, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia, NC State, Pitt, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Clemson rounded out the preseason ledger. On the 10-member Blue Ribbon Panel Preseason All-ACC Team, Duke sophomore Azurá Stevens and redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell were included, while Adut Bulgak (Florida State), Leticia Romero (Florida State), Mariya Moore (Louisville), Adrienne Motley (Miami), Lindsay Allen (Notre Dame), Brianna Turner (Notre Dame), Alexis Peterson (Syracuse) and Faith Randolph (Virginia) rounded out the team. Turner earned preseason ACC Player of the Year accolades. Duke freshman Angela Salvadores was selected to the fi ve-member ACC Newcomer Watch list along with Asia Durr (Louisville), Destinee Walker (UNC), Marina Mabrey (Notre Dame) and Arike Ogunbowale (Notre Dame) by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
