Coming off exam break, the fourth-ranked Duke women s basketball team (8-0) will travel to Los Angeles, Calif., to play in the Trojan Classic on Dec The Blue Devils will take on CSU- Bakersfi eld (2-10) and Southern California (3-5) in the Galen Center. Duke will take on CSU-Bakersfi eld on Friday, Dec. 21 at 10:30 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. tip on Saturday, Dec. 22 against Southern California, which will be aired live on the PAC-12 Network. Calling the action will be Anne Marie Anderson (PXP) and Mary Murphy (Color). The Blue Devils will take juniors Chelsea Gray and Chloe Wells back to their home state of California. Both are expected to have over a combined 100 family and friends in attendance. Both contests over the weekend will be aired live on the Blue Devil IMG Sports Network on WDNC AM 620 with Steve Barnes (PXP) and Morgan Patrick (Color) calling the action. The Blue Devils are coming off posting a season low points (60), fi eld goals (22), fi eld goal percentage (37.3), three-point fi eld goal attempts (5), assists (14) and steals (9) against St. John s. Elizabeth Williams has blocked at least one shot in every collegiate game she has played - 41 straight. The streak is the second-best in school history behind Alison Bales 55 in Tricia Liston posted two three-pointers in the St. John s contest to move past the 100-trey mark of her career (101). She has hit at least one threepointer in 15 straight games, which is the longest streak since Georgia Schweitzer hit 25 straight treys in In dissecting the top shot blockers in the nation, Elizabeth Williams is the only underclassman to rank in the top eight in the country. Duke will travel to the state of California for the second straight year as the Blue Devils competed in the Fresno Regional last year before falling to Stanford in the Elite Eight. After averaging a combined 9.5 rebounds a season ago, the junior duo of Tricia Liston and Haley Peters is pulling down an average of 14.5 boards a contest this season. The Roadrunners enter Friday s matchup with an overall record of 2-10 after falling to Santa Clara, on Dec. 19. California State - Bakersfi eld is coming off three straight losses and currently own a 2-5 record when away from its home court. CSU-Bakersfi eld is 0-1 on the season on neutral courts, after falling to Stephen F. Austin, on Nov. 24. Amber Williams (13.3 points, 2.4 rebounds), Tyonna Outland (12.0 points, 4.2 rebounds) and Janae Coffee (10.8 points, 8.3 rebounds) have led the way in scoring for the Roadrunners this year. Head coach Greg McCall is in his second season as the head coach at CSU-Bakersfi eld after serving as an assistant at CSUB for four seasons. During his time as an assistant coach, McCall helped guide the Roadrunners to a pair of postseason appearances including a record in Last season, the Roadrunners tallied a 7-22 record. Gray, Wells to Head Home... The Blue Devils will take juniors Chelsea Gray and Chloe Wells home to their state of California this week when Duke plays in the Trojan Classic in Los Angeles. Wells will get a chance to play in her home state for the fi rst time in college, while Gray will play for the second time as Duke was in the Fresno Regional last year for two contests. A product of Colton, Calif., Wells has family that lives an hour away from Los Angeles, Calif., and is expecting to have between family and friends in attendance at the games. Gray, who is out of Manteca, Calif., has a little longer drive for her family as it is approximately 5-6 hours away from Los Angeles. She is expecting between family and friends. Next season, the Blue Devils are expected to travel to Berkeley, Calif., for games to close out their career. Hey, I Know You... Chloe Wells played with an against both Cebrina Johnson and Amber Williams of CSU-Bakersfi eld. She also knows Cassie Herberts and played against Jordan Adams of Southern California. Chelsea Gray played AAU against Janae Coffee and Tyonna Outland of CSU-Bakersfi eld, while also knowing Alyssa Shannon and Shahana Zeigler. Gray also knows Jordan Adams of USC very well. A Look at Southern California... The Trojan s enter the Trojan Classic with an overall record of 3-5 after falling to Texas A&M, on Dec. 15. Southern California owns a 2-3 record at home with wins over Pepperdine and Arkansas St. earlier in the season, but has dropped its last two home games to Texas A&M and Nebraska. Cassie Harberts (16.9 points, 8.3 rebounds), Ariya Crook (14.3 points, 3.0 rebounds) and Christina Marinacci (6.0 points, 5.3 rebounds) have led the way in scoring for the Trojans this year. Head coach Michael Cooper enters his fourth season as head coach of the Trojans, after spending eight seasons as head coach of the WNBA s Los Angeles Sparks. After guiding the Sparks to fi ve Western Conference championships, Cooper took over at Southern California and has tallied a (.622) career record in his fi rst three seasons. Duke Versus the PAC Duke holds a record of 13-8 all-time against PAC-12 teams -- Arizona State (1-0), California (2-1), Colorado (0-1), USC (5-0), Stanford (2-3), UCLA (2-1), Utah (1-0) and Washington (0-2). The last time Duke faced a PAC-12 opponent came Dec. 2 when the No. 4 Blue Devils outlasted No. 10 California, in Durham, N.C. McCallie owns a 10-5 career record against PAC- 12 teams. Back in the Trojan Classic... The Blue Devils will play in the Trojan Classic for the second time since Coach P took over the program six years ago. On Dec , 2008, Duke took on Southern California and Siena and came away with two wins. The victory over USC was in overtime and provided some dramatic events. Duke was down by as many as 17 points before Abby Waner hit the tying jumper with three seconds remaining and won the game in overtime. Recapping the Overtime Game at USC... Down 12 points, then 17, then 13. No defi cit proved too big for No. 8 Duke. Abby Waner hit a tying jumper with three seconds remaining in regulation, then the Blue Devils fi nally got some breathing room in overtime and beat Southern California on Dec. 19, 2008, extending their six-game winning streak. 3 Jasmine Thomas and Chante Black scored 22 points each, and Carrem Gay had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils (8-1). Shay Selby added 11 points and Waner fi nished with 10. Freshman reserve Ashley Corral had 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Brynn Cameron also had 16 points for the Trojans (5-4), who have yet to beat Duke in three meetings. Waner s jumper tied the game at 82 after her three-pointer got the Blue Devils within one. In overtime, Duke ran off nine in a row to take the lead for good. Black had fi ve of those points after scoring just three in the second half. The Trojans struggled with missed shots and turnovers when they tried to rally. Cameron scored fi ve in a row to get them to with 1:08 left before Duke hit free throws to fi nish it off. The Trojans came undone after leading by 13 points with 4:36 remaining in regulation. They were outscored 20-5 over the fi nal three minutes, with Waner scoring nine points. USC was just 3-of-8 from the line down the stretch. Camile LeNoir was fouled in the corner with 15 seconds left. She made the fi rst, but missed the second, then Waner hit a jumper to tie the game at 82 with three seconds remaining. After a timeout, Hailey Dunham s inbounds heave was intercepted at midcourt by Gay, who missed a three-pointer to force overtime. USC opened the second half strongly and built a 17-point lead on a 25-7 run. The Trojans hit four three-pointers, including two by Cameron, and went up with 11:14 remaining. The Blue Devils managed just one fi eld goal a three-pointer by Shay Selby during USC s run. But they chipped away and cut their defi cit to with 7:11 remaining. Thomas fast-break layup off Cameron s turnover capped a 15-3 run that included 11 in a row. Duke dominated the boards, 50-37, and had 10 steals in a sloppy game where the teams combined for 54 turnovers. The Trojans blew a 12-point lead in the fi rst half and went into the break tied at 41. Selby hit a three-pointer and a jumper that tied it up for the Blue Devils. Duke got back into the game with a run to end the half, including 12 in a row just after the Trojans had built their double-digit lead. Gay, Thomas and Keturah Jackson had four points each in the spurt. Stellar Assist/Turnover Ratio... The Blue Devils have opened the season with a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio, which ranks eighth nationally. The 1.3 ratio is the best for Duke since a 1.39 assist/turnover ratio in , which is also the school record. Coach P Almost at 150 Wins... With the next victory, Blue Devil head coach Joanne P. McCallie will reach 150 wins at Duke in only six years. She will be the third-quickest NCAA Division I head coach in school history to reach 150 wins at an institution if the win comes on Friday, which would be her 182nd game. ACC Player of the Week for Williams... Sophomore Elizabeth Williams was named the ACC Player of the Week on Monday, Dec. 10, after averaging 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and 1.5 assists on the week. A product of Virginia Beach, Va., hit 17-of-28 fi eld goals in the two games for a 60.7 fi eld goal percentage. In the Georgia Tech contest, the 6-3 center posted a career-high 25 points to go along with 11 rebounds and six blocked shots. It marked her fi rst double-double of the season and sixth of her career. She hit 10-of-14 fi eld goals and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. On Sunday versus St. John s, Williams had a team-high 16 points, seven rebounds, fi ve blocks and two assists as Duke downed the Red Storm, 60-42, at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. The honor for Williams is the fi rst ACC Player of the Week accolade of her career. She tied an ACC record a year ago with nine ACC Rookie of the Week selections. Johnson Notches Career High... Vernerey Misses First Contest... After playing in 111 straight contests since arriving at Duke, senior Allison Vernerey missed her fi rst career game on Dec. 6 against Georgia Tech. She suffered an elbow injury versus California on Dec. 2. Vernerey came back to play 15 minutes against St. John s. THE SERIES WITH CSU-BAKERSFILED Duke and CSU-Bakersfi eld will meet for the fi rst time on Friday. Blue Devil Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie has also yet to face the Roadrunners. THE SERIES WITH USC Duke and Southern California will meet for the sixth time in school history, with the Blue Devils owning a 5-0 overall record. 4 STREAKS Liston Catches Fire... After failing to reach double-fi gure scoring for two straight games, Tricia Liston posted a season-high 22 points against 10th-ranked California. She attempted a career-high 16 fi eld goals, while hitting nine. Liston also pulled down eight rebounds. Liston posted 20-plus points for the second time this season and the ninth time in her career.
