One of the best rivalries in sports will hit the hardwood on Monday, Feb. 6 as the fi fth-ranked Duke women s basketball team (18-3, 9-0 ACC) will host 23rd-ranked North Carolina (17-5, 7-2) at 7:00 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Monday s game will be aired live on ESPN2 s Big Monday with Beth Mowins (PXP) and Stephanie White (Color) calling the action. The 23rd-ranked Tar Heels enter Monday s matchup with an overall record of 17-5 and a 7-2 ledger in ACC action. The squad hosted Virginia in Chapel Hill on Friday evening, besting the Cavaliers for a victory to sweep the series. North Carolina has won fi ve consecutive games in conference play and is 4-2 on the year in road games. Chay Shegog (16.7 points, 7.9 rebounds), Tierra Ruffi n-pratt (9.2 points, 5.7 rebounds) and Brittany Rountree (9.0 points, 2.4 rebounds) are the Tar Heels leading scorers. Head coach Sylvia Hatchell is in her 26th season at the helm of the program after guiding North Carolina to the regional semifi nals of the NCAA Tournament last year. McCallie s squad faced North Carolina in the 2000 NCAA Tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif., and fell on March 18. The Black Bears also lost, 68-52, on Dec. 28, 1996 on a neutral site. Since joining Duke, McCallie has notched a 4-6 mark, but has won three out of the last fi ve. Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes... The Blue Devils have won 27 straight games in Cameron Indoor Stadium against ACC opponents. Duke has not lost an ACC contest at home since Maryland posted a win on Feb. 17, Coach P is 30-2 at home against ACC opponents in her fi ve years at Duke. With one more ACC victory, Duke will reach 10 league wins for the 15th straight year. The Blue Devils are averaging 41.8 points in the paint on the season and 26.6 points off turnovers. Two of the top shot-blocking teams in the nation will hit the hardwood on Monday night as Duke ranks eighth (6.0) and North Carolina is third (6.7). Elizabeth Williams is third nationally (3.8) and Chay Shegog of UNC is 19th (2.7). Over the last seven games, Elizabeth Williams has averaged 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.3 blocks, 1.6 steals and 1.0 assists. She has hit 70.3 percent of her free throws. Chelsea Gray needs only four assists to move into a tie for 10th on Duke s single-season assist list. She has 131 dishes on the year and is looking to move past Wanisha Smith (135). Over the last eight games, Duke has featured fi ve different players lead the Blue Devils in scoring -- Haley Peters (2), Elizabeth Williams (2), Richa Jackson, Tricia Liston (2) and Chelsea Gray. Sophomore Tricia Liston has struggled in the past fi ve contests averaging only 6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals. She has hit only 4-of-16 treys and scored double-fi gures in one game. Liston has hit 0-of-5 treys the last two games and has not gone three straight games all year without hitting a trey. Elizabeth Williams needs two blocks to move into a tie with Chante Black for fourth on Duke s single season swats list. She also needs two blocks to move into 10th place on Duke s career blocks list. Chelsea Gray has averaged 13.0 points, 6.8 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 steals. She has hit 7-of-14 treys during that span. In Duke s 18 wins, the Blue Devils have hit 48.8 percent from the fi eld and averaged 78.7 points. In the three losses, Duke has hit only 33.7 percent from the fi eld and averaged 54.7 points. Haley Peters has hit four out of her last eight three-point fi eld goal attempts and has drained a careerbest nine treys on the year. Duke has held four opponents to under 40 points this season. In Coach P s fi ve years at Duke, the Blue Devils have held 21 opponents to under 40 points. With under three minutes left in games, Chelsea Gray is hitting 56.3 percent of her fi eld goals and has scored 37 of Duke s 116 points. In her Blue Devil career, she has hit 22 of 41 fi eld goals (53.7%) in the fi nal three minutes of games. Sophomore Haley Peters played one of her best collegiate games against Maryland on Jan. 22 as she scored a career-high 21 points, hit a career-high 10- of-12 fi eld goals, had fi ve rebounds, one assist, one steal and had no turnovers in 32 minutes. In the previous three contests, Peters had scored only 13 points combined. Peters has notched 10 or more points a total of 13 times this season. Peters has averaged 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists over the last four games. She notched her fi rst career double-double against Wake Forest with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Peters has hit 57.4 percent of her fi eld goals in that stretch. Over the last two games, Peters has pulled down 20 rebounds. Home Sweet Home... Due Joanne P. McCallie took over as head coach at Duke in , she has guided the Blue Devils to a 67-5 overall record in Cameron Indoor Stadium. With a 6.2 assists per game average, Chelsea Gray leads the ACC and 11th nationally. She has posted 131 through 21 contests on the year and is on pace to break the Duke single-season record for assists, which is held by Kira Orr at 170 back in Orr had 120 assists in her fi rst 20 games back in The highest per game assist average in Duke history is 5.2 by Orr in , while Hilary Howard averaged 5.0 in In ACC games only, Gray leads the league with a 6.6 per game average. Sophomore Tricia Liston snapped a three-game streak without scoring double-fi gures at Clemson with 16 points as she hit 3-of-5 treys. Liston has struggled over the last six games hitting only 4-of-16 treys. In the ACC, Liston ranks fi rst in three-point fi eld goal percentage (41.9), tied for fi fth in three-point fi eld goals made (1.5), 15th in fi eld goal percentage (48.4) and 23rd in scoring (10.9). In the loss to Connecticut on Jan. 30, the Blue Devils had their 34-game home court winning streak snapped. Duke shot a season-low 24.6 percent from the fi eld, held to a season-low 45 points, was outrebounded for only the second time this season, held to zero bench points, dished only eight assists, but turned the ball over only 15 times. Duke s offensive output was unlike what the Blue Devils have been producing all season. The Blue Devils are averaging 75.3 points, hitting 46.8 percent from the fi eld and 36.0 percent from downtown. Talented Sophomore Class... The fi ve-member sophomore class continues to perform well for the Blue Devils as they have scored 62.0 percent of the team s points on the season (980 of 1581). Coach P Notches 50 Wins... Blue Devil head coach Joanne P. McCallie notched her 50th ACC regular season win at Virginia Tech on Jan. 15. She owns a mark and became the second-quickest ACC coach to reach the 50-win mark in only 61 contests. Kay Yow of N.C. State accomplished the mark in only 57 games (50-7). Chris Weller of Maryland is the next closest at Coach P has also posted a 44-0 overall record since arriving at Duke against the following league opponents -- Clemson (5-0), Georgia Tech (7-0), Miami (4-0), N.C. Freshman Elizabeth Williams registered just the fi fth triple-double in school history and the fi rst by a freshman at Duke on Jan. 6 at Wake Forest with 18 points, 16 rebounds and an ACC-record 12 blocked shots. The triple-double with blocks marks just the second in ACC history. Overall, the ACC has 15 players notch a triple-double, but Williams is the fi rst freshman. Earlier this season, Chelsea Gray had a tripledouble with 14 points, a school-record 13 assists and 11 rebounds against Pittsburgh on Dec. 4. Duke is the only team in the nation with two players who have notched a triple-double in Only fi ve players have notched triple-doubles this season, while Victoria McGowan of Stetson has two. Williams owns six games with 10+ rebounds and four double-doubles. Good Defensive Effort... In 21 games on the season, Duke has forced 22.9 turnovers and created 559 points off those turnovers. The Blue Devils are averaging 13.5 steals a contest. From Downtown... Duke is averaging only 4.1 three-pointers made per game on the season, but are hitting an ACC-best 36.0 percent from long range. The Blue Devils went 0-of-8 from downtown at Virginia Tech on Jan. 15 snapping a 13-game streak of hitting at least one trey. On This Date... Duke owns a 7-3 record in games played on Feb. 6. The Blue Devils have won fi ve in a row on this date. Wins Last Five Years... Duke owns the fourth-most wins over the last six years in the nation -- Connecticut (202), Stanford (186), Tennessee (176) and Duke (165) - updated 2/3. In the NCAA Stats... Chelsea Gray s 13 assists versus Pittsburgh is tied for the fourth-most in a single game this season. Gray also ranks 11th in assists per game (6.2) and 23rd in assist turnover ratio (2.08). Elizabeth Williams is third in blocked shots (3.8) nationally and has the highest per game average of any freshman in the nation. As a team, Duke ranks eighth in fi eld goal percentage (46.8), 17th in scoring defense (52.7), sixth in steals (13.5), 11th in rebound margin (9.5), 14th in assists (16.9) and eighth in blocks (6.0) -- updated through games of Feb. 2. Henson Has Surgery; Miss Duke freshman Amber Henson had surgery on Friday, Jan. 6 at the Duke Ambulatory Surgery Center and will miss the remainder of the campaign. Henson s surgery was performed by Dr. Alison Toth to stabilize the right patella, which is an injury she has dealt with since high school. Henson, who is out of Tampa, Fla., played in only eight contests averaging 1.8 points and 1.9 rebounds. The 6-4 forward was an ACC Newcomer to Watch in the preseason, after a standout high school career at Walter L. Sickles H.S. Henson was a three-time Parade All-America honoree and was the Florida Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. She averaged 20.7 points, 13.6 rebounds, 6.7 blocks and 2.5 assists in her fi nal year. Henson was a McDonald s and WBCA All-America selection. Duke will apply for a medical hardship for Henson. All Starters in Double-Digit Scoring... The Blue Devils registered all fi ve starters with double-fi gure scoring against Pitt on Dec. 4. Since , Duke has notched fi ve starters in double-fi gure scoring only 10 times now. The most recent occurrences were on Nov. 19 and Dec. 28, Wells to Miss Remainder of Blue Devil sophomore Chloe Wells will not be enrolled at Duke University for the spring 2012 semester due to violation of university policy, which was announced on Jan. 10. A native of Colton, Calif., Wells had started the fi rst 10 games for the Blue Devils averaging 10.4 points, 4.0 assists, 3.6 steals and 2.1 rebounds.
