PHOENIX SUNS (24-18) CLEVELAND CAVALIERS GAME NOTES REGULAR SEASON GAME #44 HOME GAME #22 CAVS QUICK FACTS After Friday s victory over Milwaukee on Friday, the Cleveland Cavaliers continue their five-game home stand tonight against the Phoenix Suns. It is the first of two regular season meetings between the two teams. The Cavs will wrap up their home stand on Tuesday when another West opponent, the New Orleans Pelicans, come into town. Against the Bucks on Friday, the Cavs held Milwaukee to an opponent season-low 78 points on (.405) shooting from the field, including 7-24 (.292) from the three-point line. Offensively, the Cavs had 28 assists on 37 made field goals. In January, the Cavs are pulling down 14.3 offensive rebounds per game (most in NBA this month) and scoring 15.3 second chance points (7 th in NBA). In the win over Milwaukee, the Cavaliers pulled down a season-high 21 offensive boards that led to 19 second chance points. On the season, Cleveland ranks 5 th in offensive rebounds per game (12.5). Tonight, Anderson Varejao will play in his 513 th career game with the Cavs, which will tie Craig Ehlo for 9 th place in franchise history. Varejao is also closing in on 4,000 points (12 points away) and 4,000 rebounds (11 rebounds away). Only Zydrunas Ilgauskas (5,904), Brad Daugherty (5,227) and John Williams (4,669) have more rebounds in Cavaliers history than Varejao. Anderson Varejao has grabbed at least 11 rebounds in 12 of the last 14 contests (since Dec. 29), averaging 13.7 rebounds to go along with 11.3 points on.508 shooting, 3.5 assists and 1.4 steals in 32.7 minutes per game over that stretch. He notched a double-doubles in both contests against the Suns in with averages of 17.0 points on.556 shooting, 14.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals in 36.5 minutes. Kyrie Irving posted his fifth double-double of the season (10th career) against the Bucks after finishing with 10 points, a game-high ten assists (career-high tying seven assists in 3 rd Q) and zero turnovers in 28 minutes. It marked the second time this season that Irving had at least 10 assists and zero turnovers in a game (vs. POR on Dec. 17). With an Eastern Conference-best 14.7 points per game as a reserve this season, Dion Waiters is averaging more points off the bench than any Cavalier player since Hot Rod Williams scored 16.9 points per game off the pine in (minimum 20 games). Waiters has scored in double figures in 22 of his 29 appearances as a substitute, including in Friday s win when he poured in 13 points, a career-high tying eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in 28 minutes off the bench against the Bucks. On the season, Anderson Varejao (10.3, 3rd in East) and Tristan Thompson (9.8, 4th in East) are pulling down a combined 20.1 rebounds per game, which is the 2nd-highest for a rebounding duo in the Eastern Conference (Drummond/Monroe 21.5). Tristan Thompson s 21 double-doubles are the 2 nd -most in East in the Eastern Conference this season. He has posted a double-double in 10 of the last 14 games (since Dec. 29), including double-doubles in eight of the last 10 contests (since Jan. 5). In eight games with the Cavs, Luol Deng is averaging 16.5 points, including.417 (10-24) from the three-point line, 4.0 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 32.1 minutes per game minutes per game. His 29.0 points per game average was the highest among all Eastern Conference guards that week and second-highest among all East players. He posted the highest field goal percentage among all players in the conference who had at least a 21.0 points per game average (minimum three games). He was also one of two players in the East to record multiple 30-point games and the only one to record at least 30 points and 10 assists in a sing le game. DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE: In an win over the L.A. Clippers on Dec. 7, Cleveland held Los Angeles to (.322) shooting from the field, a seasonlow by a Cavaliers opponent. The only other player in Cavalier s history with a game in which he equaled or exceeded Thompson's totals in each of those categories (since the NBA began tracking block ed shots in ) is Cliff Robinson, who had three such games for Cleveland (two in and one the following season).
