SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 2 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI In 10 years at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Although he swept the National Coach of the Year honors in 2004, Martelli turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job in as the Hawks were faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the squad that went 30-2 and posted a perfect regular season (27-0). After the Hawks struggled in the early going, Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. For his efforts, he was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that Martelli had guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s 10-year career record is now , but more impressively, his teams have gone in the past six seasons (counting this year). He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and is fourth in winning percentage (.639). Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), the coach has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 10 seasons. Martelli is in Atlantic 10 play, ranking him third on the A-10 s list for conference regular season victories. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most. His 16 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 10 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of coaching legend Jack Ramsay s total of 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.695 postseason winning percentage (16-7). The coach has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in five consecutive years, with three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 10 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball having served as a USA assistant coach for gold-medal winning teams at both the 2001 FIBA World Championship for Young Men and the 1998 Goodwill Games. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a number-one national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. It was his second 20-plus point outing of the year, surpassing his previous personal best of 20 points set at Saint Mary s. Phil Mart e l l i cites the game-winning tip-in vs. Temple (Jan. 8) as a huge boost of confidence for Ferguson, helping the s o p h o m o re string together a seven-game stretch in which he's averaged 12.5 ppg. "The tip-in against Temple took some of the monsters off his shoulders. He's been playing freer and easier. He's gotten better in practice and there f o re he's playing better basketball. He knows that I expect him to be a double-figure score r," said Martelli. D AVE S DIAGNOSIS: Dave Mallon is questionable for today after suffering a grade-2 sprain of his left ankle at Dayton, which kept him out of the St. Bonaventure game. Mallon went down with 11:30 to play in the first half and was sidelined for the rest of the game. The Hawks missed the senior whom Phil Mart e l l i has called, the anchor of the defense and our best communicator on defense. CITY CROWN: To n i g h t s game is for the Big 5 championship and marks just the fourth time in the 50 years of the City Series that two teams have met with 3-0 re c o rds. Saint Joseph's has been involved in all four of those games, while SJU and Villanova have met twice Saint Joseph's defeated Temple, Saint Joseph's defeated Villanova, Temple defeated Saint Joseph's, CELEBRATING THE PAST: With the 50th anniversary of the Big 5 being celebrated this year, tonight s game will take even greater significance, as Saint Joseph s and Villanova played the first-ever City Series game. The Hawks won that game, 83-70, on December 14, 1955, before a crowd of 2,636 here at the Palestra. To mark the occasion, a few players from both schools who participated in that game will be honored prior to the tip-off. This game will also be considered a neutral contest, with both schools splitting the tickets. SJU will wear the home white uniforms and be designated as the home team on the scoreboard, just as it was in that inaugural Big 5 game 50 years ago. CITY RIVALRY: Saint Joseph s is 3-0 in the Big 5, in the 50th anniversary of the most traditional and unique arrangements in college basketball. SJU, which won the City Series crown outright in both 2004 and 2003, went 2-2 in SJU has won a total of 19 Big 5 titles (9 outright/10 shared), which is second all-time to Temple s 22 titles (5 outright/17 shared). SJU has won the most outright titles of any school, and owns the distinction of capturing the first in 1956, when the Hawks were guided by legendary coach Jack Ramsay. KEY TO THE CITY: SJU owns a 19-3 record against city teams over the last four seasons (counting this year). This mark counts all games against Philadelphia teams (Drexel included). The Hawks went 3-3 last season and are 4-0 in with wins over Drexel, Temple, La Salle and Penn. PALESTRA PLAY: With the formation of the Philadelphia Big 5 in 1955, SJU began utilizing The Palestra as a home venue. Since that year, the Hawks have played at least one home game in the historic arena every season. SJU has compiled a re c o rd (.680) at The Palestra, with m o re wins than the program's victory total at Alumni Memorial F i e l d h o u s e (302-74). The Hawks are playing at the famed building six times this season, with three of them as home games. SJU is 4-1 with wins over Drexel, Temple, La Salle and Penn, and a loss to Ohio State. ROUGH ROAD AHEAD: This week the Hawks have back-to-back games against ranked teams (Villanova, GW) in the regular season for the first time since , when they faced UMass (#2) and GW (#24). SJU also met two consecutive ranked teams more re c e n t l y, but it was in the NCAA To u rnament during the run to the 2004 Elite Eight - Wake Fore s t (#17) and Oklahoma State (#4). HAWKS VS. THE TOP 25: Villanova is the third ranked team faced by the Hawks this season, after they fell to #17 George Washington on Jan. 14 and #8 Gonzaga on Dec. 31. Last year, SJU went 0-2 vs. the Top 25 with losses to Kansas and Villanova. The last ranked

SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 team beaten by Saint Joseph s was #17 Wake Forest in the NCAA East Regional Semifinals during the Hawks run to the 2004 Elite Eight. Temple is the highest ranked team defeated by SJU under Phil Martelli, when the Hawks scored a win over the #5 Owls on Feb. 29, FAMILIAR FACE: Phil Martelli spent part of the summer with Villanova s Allan Ray when the Hawk coach guided the USA Basketball U-21 World Championship team. The squad competed at the FIBA U-21 World Championships in Argentina in July, where it earned a fifth-place finish. It was Martelli s third stint with a USA Basketball team, and his first as the head coach. ADDING ALV I N : Alvin Mofunanya e a rned the first start of his care e r, replacing the injured Dave Mallon against St. Bonaventure. The fre s h- man responded with a care e r-best eff o rt, scoring 13 points in a seasonhigh 21 minutes of action. He had 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting and had 4 rebounds. Mofunanya's previous highs were 2 points, 2 rebounds and 9 minutes. On giving the freshman the start, coach Phil Martelli c o m- mented, "He's practiced well. He's a real good talker and he's a little better with the ball than even I would give him credit for. Around the basket he's still a work in pro g ress. But 13 points in your first start - that's significant. And I loved his foul-shooting stroke. He's gotten better in practice and deserved a look." A.J. FOR M.I.P. : Abdulai Jalloh has made his case as one of the top candidates for the Atlantic 10 s Chris Daniels Most Improved Player Aw a rd. H e s gone from a re s e rve player averaging 4.3 ppg last season, to a s t a rter scoring a team-best 15.5 ppg. Jalloh has scored in double figu res 14 times, and had the highest output for the Hawks this season with 30 points vs. Ohio State. The comparison of his two seasons: Scoring avg Rebounding avg Minutes per game FG pct pt FG pct FT pct FRONT AND CENTER: F ro n t c o u rt players Rob Ferg u s o n and A h m a d N i v i n s have put together solid numbers in the past six contests. F e rguson is averaging 12.5 ppg, including a high of 22 points vs. SBU. Nivins, has averaged 7.3 ppg and 7.8 rpg, but made 16 of his last 25 shots. Ferguson is shooting 29-for-54 from the field during this stretch. B A C K C O U RT BOOST: The Hawks starting backcourt of Dwayne Lee and Abdulai Jalloh came out of its shooting slump at Dayton, combining for 33 points on 9-for-19 shooting. Prior to that game, the guard s had combined to make just 15-of-61 (24.5%) from the field and 3-of-28 (10.7%) from 3-point range. They had scored a total of 71 points, with 38 from the foul line. Lee and Jalloh were 0-for-10 against Penn until Jalloh connected on a jumper for the gamewinner with :25 to go. FREEBIES: Abdulai Jalloh has definitely taken advantage of his trips to the foul line. In the last five games, he has totalled 65 points, but 35 points are from the foul line (54 percent). On the season, Jalloh is averaging 6.5 free throw attempts per game, but in the last four games, he s averaging 9.5 foul shots. OFF THE MARK: Since making 14-of-26 3-point field goals in the win over Temple (1/8), the Hawks have struggled from beyond the arc. In the seven games following that one, SJU has made just 43-of-155 of its 3- point attempts (27.7 percent). Included in that total are lows of 0% vs. La Salle (1st half); 9.1% vs. GW (1st); 16.7% vs. Charlotte (1st); 20.0% (1st) and 13.3% (2nd) at UMass; 25.0% at Saint Louis (2nd); 14.3% (1st) vs. Penn; and 18.2% (2nd) at Dayton. SJU is still one of the A-10 s top 3-point shooting teams, ranking sixth with 36.0 percent. TALE OF TWO HALVES: The Hawks have had trouble stringing together a solid 40 minutes in recent games. In the first half against La Salle, SJU missed 18 shots, missed all eight of its 3-point attempts, and scored just 16 points. Saint Joseph s turned it around after the break, fighting back from an 11-point halftime deficit, with 50 percent shooting. That second-half total by the team was the second highest all season - SJU scored 53 in the loss at Gonzaga. SJU came out strong at Saint Louis, hitting its first seven shots en route to a lead at the half. The Hawks only scored 20 points in the second half, and committed 11 turnovers, but were not challenged. Although the Hawks had only 17 first-half points at Penn, they did hit seven field goals and only trailed by two at the break. SJU went through a 13 1/2 minute stretch without a field goal, but still came out with the victory. Game 1st half 2nd half GW Charlotte La Salle Saint Louis Penn Dayton JEKYLL-HYDE: The Hawks have suffered from inconsistency which has prompted Phil Martelli to say, the only thing consistent with this team is that they re inconsistent. Here s a synopsis of the Hawks ups and downs: Game Ups Downs Gonzaga 53.6 FG%; 46.9% 3-pt; 94 pts Xavier made 8 of first 12 shots XU made 12-0 run; 15 turnovers Temple 11 of 17 3-pt FGs in 1st half 6-of-19 3-pt FGs in 2nd half UMass 4-of-25 3-pt FGs; 58 pts GW 70% 3-pt FGs in 2nd half season-low 9% 3-pt in 1st half Charlotte 7-pt halftime lead 9-minute scoring drought (2nd) La Salle 50 pts scored; 50% FG in 2nd half 3 field goals in 1st half (3-for-21) SLU 55% in 1st; halftime lead 20 pts in 2nd half Penn FT in 2nd half 13 1/2 minutes w/o FG (2nd) Dayton within 3 points at halftime allows UD to shoot 55% in 2nd KEEPING THEM DOWN: Senior Dave Mallon has earned praise from Phil Martelli for the defensive job he s done. Most noteworthy was limiting Saint Louis Ian Vouyoukas to 5 points, but only one field goal. Vouyoukas only took one shot, and that came with three minutes left in the game. Here s a rundown of what Mallon s done vs. the opponents top players: Charlotte - Curtis Withers (16.3 avg)- 13 pts; 4 in 2nd half La Salle- Steven Smith (19.6 avg) - 17 pts; 4-14 FG Saint Louis - Ian Vouyoukas (14.4 avg) - 5 pts; only 1 FG attempt SHAKING IT UP: Phil Martelli went with a different starting lineup against Charlotte, replacing Ahmad Nivins with senior D a v e Mallon. That lineup was in place for five games, until Alvin

SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 Mofunanya got the start vs. St. Bona. because of Mallon s injury. Nivins play hasn t fallen off with the change as he s averaging 7.3 pts, 7.8 rebounds and 25.0 minutes off the bench. More impressively, he s made 16-of-25 field goals during this stretch (64%). BENCHMARKS: Phil Mart e l l i s rotation is generally seven players deep, with Ahmad Nivins and Pat Calathes being the only ones to see significant minutes. Nivins is averaging 25.9 minutes per game while Calathes logs Alvin Mofunanya s play in the St. Bonaventure game might merit him more minutes, as he is now averaging 4.6. Three Hawks are averaging over 30 minutes per game - Abdulai Jalloh, Dwayne Lee and Chet Stachitas - while Rob Ferguson is at 28.6 per game. Lee has been called on to play all 40 minutes seven times this season. BOARD GAMES: The Hawks have been strong on the glass in the last five games. Against Charlotte, one of the league s better rebounding teams, the teams each had 36 rebounds, but SJU limited Charlotte to just 11 on the offensive end, with the 49ers holding a 9-7 edge in second-chance points. In the previous two games, SJU s opponents had beaten them in second-chance points. The Hawks dominated the glass against La Salle, with 41 rebounds, the highest total since the season opener (44), and then outdistanced Saint Louis (32-21), Penn (31-25), and St. Bonaventure (41-32) on the boards. SURE SHOTS: F ree throw shooting has been one of the team s s t rengths, and the Hawks still rank second in the nation and lead the A- 10 at 78.9 percent. The team s perf o rmance is a definite impro v e m e n t f rom last year when SJU h o v e red around the 50 to 60 percent mark at the line. Abdulai Jalloh is the team s leader at 82.3 percent, with four of five starters converting 75 percent or better, and two of them hitting better than 80 percent. The Hawks own two of the top five spots in the Atlantic 10 rankings for free throw percentage (Jalloh, Chet Stachitas). The Hawks used that prowess to their advantage against La Salle, hitting a season-high 33 free throws (in 39 attempts). DRY SPELLS: Maybe it s in direct relation to the unseasonably warm weather, but drought warnings should have been issued in recent games. Against La Salle, SJU managed just three field goals in the first half and scored only 16 points. In the loss to Charlotte, the Hawks went scoreless for nine minutes, missing 13 shots. The longest dry spell of the season came in the second half at Penn, when the Hawks went 13 1/2 minutes without a field goal. Fortunately for SJU, it made 10-of-12 free throws during that stretch en route to the win, which was its third in a row. CONFERENCE CALL: SJU is averaging 67.2 points per game overall and 62.9 in conference games. In league games, the Hawks are shooting 40.8 percent from the field but allowing the opponents to hit 41.6 percent. Abdulai Jalloh leads the Hawks in scoring with 14.8 ppg, followed by Chet Stachitas with GIVE HIM THE BALL: Rob Ferguson is one of the few Hawks who has shown consistency in his shooting, as evidenced by his 52.1 FG pct., but the sophomore only averages 7.7 shots per game. He went 6-for-8 from the field at UMass, but had taken only five shots the previous game vs. Temple and then five at GW. At Bucknell, MAGIC NUMBERS Has Needs Milestone Chet Stachitas 943 points 57 1,000 points HONOR ROLL Abdulai Jalloh Big 5 Player of the Week (Jan. 3) Ferguson was 2-for-2, but at Saint Mary s he took 14 shots en route to a career-high 20 points. Against Charlotte, the sophomore went 5-for-8 from the floor, but was 9-for-13 en route to his career-high of 22 points vs. St. Bonaventure. HOME COOKING: After playing five of seven games on the road (fro m Dec. 21-Jan. 14), the Hawks are now in the back end of a stretch with seven of nine contests in Philadelphia. There are three games at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, three at the Palestra and one at Temple. This contest is the second of four consecutive games in the city. S TANDING TALL: Abdulai Jalloh is one of just eight A-10 players with over 100 free throw attempts. But Jalloh is one of two players in that g roup to stand under 6-6. The 6-1 Jalloh is joined by Duquesne s 6-3 f o rw a rd Bryant McAllister as the little guys in that list. Jalloh has made the most of his 122 attempts, making a team-best 82.3 percent. SULLY S SURGERY: Senior reserve Rob Sullivan had surgery on Jan. 20 to repair a fracture on the pinky finger of his right hand, but has already returned to practice and made an appearance in the St. Bonaventure game. Sullivan is a key player in practice for the Hawks as he runs the offense of the scout team. SHOOTING FOR SIX: Among the Hawks goals this season is to become the first team in Atlantic 10 history to win six consecutive regular-season titles. With five titles, SJU is currently tied with the Massachusetts teams from 1991 to CLASS ACT: During their three years, seniors Dwayne Lee, D a v e M a l l o n and Chet Stachitas have been part of a re c o rd (81.0 winning pct) in conference games. FOUL PLAY: One thing that has hindered the Hawks has been the number of personal fouls. SJU has already had 14 disqualifications in 18 games - - last season, they had a total of 11 in 36 games. Rob Ferg u s o n and Abdulai Jalloh have fouled out three times each while A h m a d N i v i n s, Dwayne Lee and Chet Stachitas have each fouled out twice. The Hawks are averaging 19.1 fouls per game, with Jalloh (3.4 avg), F e rguson (3.2) and Nivins (2.8) being whistled for the most. MAKING THEM COUNT: Rob Ferguson had the game-winning shot vs. Temple. The sophomore grabbed an air ball by Abdulai Jalloh and put it in from the baseline with 2.2 seconds remaining to give the Hawks the win. It was only his third field goal of the game. Jalloh hit the game-winner vs. Penn at :25 and that was his only field goal of the contest. UP AND DOWN: The Hawks offensive production has been like a ro l l e r- coaster ride. They ve scored 90 or more points twice this year (Gonzaga,

Then the Hawks had a season-low 47 points at Penn, but still pulled out the win. The team s scoring average is currently SLUMP BUSTER: After a three-game slump, Chet Stachitas re t u rn e d to his early-season form with a 24-point eff o rt at #8 Gonzaga. Stachitas shot 8-for-15 from the field and 5-for-10 from 3-point range. Earlier this y e a r, in front of a national t.v. audience, the senior put on a shooting clinic at Madison Square Garden, tying his care e r-high with 27 in the win over Kansas. He made 9-of-12 from the field, with 6-of-7 thre e s. PRIME TIME PLAYER: Abdulai Jalloh t u rned in another big eff o rt on national t.v., with 27 points at #8 Gonzaga. The sophomore scored 19 in the second half while shooting 6-for-12 from the field, 10-for-10 fro m the line and making 5-of-9 3-pointers. Coupled with a 21-point perf o rmance at Saint Mary s, Jalloh s averages for the week were 24.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists, earning him Big 5 Player of the We e k h o n- ors. Jalloh set a new care e r-high with 30 vs. Ohio State in December. THE SET-UP MAN: Dwayne Lee led the Atlantic 10 in assists last season and currently holds the lead again this year with his 5.11 average. If Lee were to finish this season atop the rankings, he would become only the second player in conference history to lead the league in assists for two consecutive years. The other player to do that was Lee s mentor, Hawk great Jameer Nelson. Lee has 326 in his care e r. ON BOARD: The Hawks are rebounding by committee with no dominant player on the boards. Ahmad Nivins leads the team with 5.9 and g u a rd Abdulai Jalloh is second with 5.1. SJU s rebounding margin is now +1.7, and the Hawks rank first in the A-10 in rebounding defense, allowing their foes just 29.9 boards per game. SLOW STA RT E R S : SJU has often gotten off to slow starts and has been able to overcome the early deficit against Kansas and La Salle. Tonight s marks the first of three consecutive, with a date with George Washington being the next one on Saturday. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: The Hawks are facing a challenging schedule this year, meeting seven teams which reached the 2005 NCAA To u rnament. And when looking at ESPN s early-season predictions, SJU has 10 NCAA teams on the slate with 12 games against ESPN's preseason NCAA To u rnament bracket: Davidson, Kansas, Ohio State. Bucknell, Gonzaga, Xavier (twice), George Washington (twice), Charlotte, Pennsylvania and Villanova. SJU went thru an early-season eight-game stretch in which it faced seven of those teams. They opened with four of five games against teams that w e re picked among the top four in league, as predicted by the coaches - Xavier (4th), Temple (3rd), George Washington (1st) and Charlotte (2nd). SJU was picked seventh. FILLING THE VOID: For the second consecutive season, head coach Phil Martelli had to replace an Atlantic 10 Player of the Year (Pat Carroll) and a player who left early to pursue a career in the NBA (Dwayne Jones). With their departures, the Hawks also lost over 2,000 points and 1,110 rebounds. Carroll averaged 18.3 points and was named the conference s Co-Player of the Year, as well as an Honorable Mention All-America by AP. Dwayne Jones, an All-A-10 selection and the league s Defensive Player of the Year, entered the NBA Draft and although going undrafted, signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The previous year, Jameer Nelson captured national and conference player of the year honors and was a first-round NBA Draft pick along with Delonte West. CLASS ACT: Fourth-year seniors Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas have had a great deal of success thus far on Hawk Hill, and will be striving to take their place among the best four-year classes in school history. The trio has now compiled an record (74.3 win. pct.) in their four years to date. The school record is set by Jameer Nelson and Tyrone Barley, while last year s duo of Pat Carroll and John Bryant compiled a mark. COMEBACK KIDS: Saint Joseph s fought back from a 17-4 deficit against Kansas to score the win, and from a deficit in the win over La Salle. Those two games are tied as the largest deficits o v e rcome for victories this year. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Manhattan College. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is assisting at his alma mater. THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 379 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the season. The last game in which a Saint Joseph s team did not hit a three was at Southwest Missouri State on Mar. 18, OUT OF ACTION: Junior forward Arvydas Lidzius has not participated in games thus far this season in order to concentrate on academics. Lidzius does participate in practice but will redshirt the season. Jordan Fowler is currently dealing with institutional academic issues and will not participate the rest of the year. JERSEY GUYS: Starting point guard Dwayne Lee welcomes fellow St. Anthony graduate Ahmad Nivins into the starting lineup. The duo both played for the scholastic power and are among those featured in the book, The Miracle of St. Anthony. SIGN THEM UP: Phil Martelli locked up another strong recruiting class as four scholastic standouts signed national letters of intent to attend SJU in the fall of The class is one of seven from the Atlantic 10 to be ranked among the nation s top 50 by Hoop Scoop. Rivera (6-2, G)- Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti H.S. H AWKS IN THE PROS: Saint Joseph s is currently re p resented in the NBA by 2004 first-round picks Jameer Nelson of Orlando and Delonte West of Boston. Also, last year s A-10 Defensive Player of the Ye a r Dwayne Jones started out his year in the NBDL for the Florida Flame, was called up to the Minnesota Ti m b e rwolves and then on Jan. 27, was traded to Boston. He is currently back with the Florida Flame. Nelson was recently selected to play in the Rookie Challenge at the All-Start Game on the team of second-year players. Their stats follow: Nelson - 37 games, 9 starts, 28.2 mpg, 13.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.4 apg West - 45 starts, 33.0 mpg, 11.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 4.2 apg Jones - 24 games, 9.0 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 1.9 bpg (NBDL stats) CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is now tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. Indiana tops the list with 11 graduates that have coached in the league. Below is the list of former Hawks who have been NBA head coaches. Player (Class) NBA Teams W-L (yrs.) Including this season s record, that number is now (72.9) in six years, an average of 21.8 per season. PHILLY S FINEST: The Hawk mascot was featured in Philadelphia Magazine s Who s the Greatest? issue, pitting all-time city icons vs. each other in a poll. The Hawk lost to the Phillie Phanatic for the greatest mascot, by an 80 percent to 13 percent margin.

SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 8 BLAST FROM THE PA S T: To honor the 50th anniversary of the Big 5, S J U and Penn allowed the throwing of streamers after each team s first basket in the Jan. 28 game and received warnings from the officials. The traditional practice had been banned by the NCAA in 1985, but it was b rought back for a day in 1993 (Jan. 25) when the two teams met. A-10 EXPANSION: The Atlantic 10 Conference expanded to 14 teams this year with the addition of Charlotte and Saint Louis. The league has abandoned the two-division format and be one, 14-team entity. The A-10 now encompasses eight states and the District of Columbia, and places the conference in 12 of the top 59 media markets in the country. HUGE LOSS: The Saint Joseph s basketball family lost a key member when former coach and player Jim Boyle passed away on December 23, 2005 after a battle with lung cancer. Boyle, 63, served as head coach of the Hawks from 1981 to 1990, compiling a re c o rd in nine seasons. Bo led the Hawks to post-season play four times, with two trips to the NCAA To u rnament and two to the NIT. His victory total is the f o u rth best in school history. Boyle had the unique distinction of being a part of Hawk history as a player, an assistant coach and head coach. He had a connection with all of the SJU coaches from the past four decades, including the present. Boyle played for Hall of Famer Dr. Jack Ramsay and served as an assistant coach on the staffs of Jack M c K i n n e y, Harry Booth and Jim Lynam. Boyle also worked with John G r i ffin, when they were assistants to Lynam. Then during his tenure as head coach, Boyle hired current SJU mentor Phil Martelli as an assistant coach in The Hawks will be wearing a black patch with his nickname, Bo, for the rest of the season, to honor Boyle s memory. MUST-SEE TV: It s hard to believe, but the most unique coaches show in the nation - Phil Martelli s HawkTalk - celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The show airs on Thursdays at 11 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet and then airs nationally on CollegeSportsTV on Tuesdays. Called the nation s best coach s show by The Sporting News in 2001, Martelli hosts the unscripted show in a Tonight Show setting with a variety of guests. CHAMPIONS FOR A CAUSE: Phil Mart e l l i s passion extends to his work in the community and his eff o rts with Coaches vs. Cancer are tireless. Martelli and the five other Division I coaches in the city (Drexel, La Salle, Penn, Temple, Villanova) comprise the Philadelphia Coaches vs. Cancer group, which has become the most successful group in the nation. The six coaches have banded together and raised over $500,000 last year to fight the disease, while setting a goal of $1 million for this y e a r. The Philadelphia group was honored with the Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Aw a rd by the NABC at the 2004 NCAA Final Four. One of the main events for Coaches vs. Cancer this year will be the second annual BasketBall, a black-tie event at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue on April 29. LOOKING AHEAD: The Hawks host #10 George Washington on S a t u rday at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse in a nationally-televised tilt (ESPN2). During that game, the SJU and GW coaches, and others a round the nation, will wear sneakers as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Sneaker Event. This event strives to increase awareness of the joint e ff o rt of the National Basketball Coaches Association and the American Cancer Society is undertaking to fight the disease. The Saint Joseph s- Villanova rivalry is one of the most intense in college basketball as just 6.4 miles separates the two Big 5 schools which are rich in basketball tradition. 11 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 11 SEASON OF CELEBRATIONS The season is a special one for Saint Joseph s and Philadelphia basketball. It marks the 50th anniversary of the Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot and also the golden anniversary of the Philadelphia Big 5. THE HAWK The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for almost half a century, and celebrates its golden anniversary in One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. Brennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to e v e ry game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. A n d rew Moral is this year s Hawk mascot, and the 29th student to wear the wings. He is a senior elementary education major from North Wales, PA. ON THE AIR RADIO: All Hawk games are broadcast on SportsTalk 950 (WPEN-AM) with the Saint Joseph s Sports Network team of Tom McCarthy and Joe Lunardi providing play-by-play and color commentary, respectively. The broadcast of Saint Joseph s basketball can also be heard via the internet at McCarthy, in his third year with SJSN, has just been named the play-byplay announcer for the New York Mets radio broadcasts, after three years with the Philadelphia Phillies. Lunardi, in his 16th year on the Hawks radio broadcasts, is the Assistant Vice President for University Communications at the Saint Joseph s, and is a college basketball analyst for ESPN. Broadcasts can also be accessed by Teamline, calling (access code 4280). HAWKTALK : Phil Martelli s HawkTalk celebrates its 10th anniversary in The most unique coach s television show in college basketball, it was named the Best Coach s Show in the Nation by The Sporting News. Martelli s show combines a Tonight Show format with unique guests and just a few basketball highlights. The show airs on Thursday nights on Comcast SportsNet. INTERNET: Information for Saint Joseph s basketball is found at SJU s athletics website, Game notes, live in-game statistics for all Hawk home games, and selected road games, and streaming audio of every radio broadcast can be accessed at the site. UNIVERSITY FACTS THE BIG 5 The Philadelphia Big 5 was born on November 23, 1954, when administrators at the five major Universities in the city f o rmulated a partnership. They agreed to participate in a men s basketball round robin- the City Series - at the Palestra on Pennsylvania s campus. For 50 years, the rivalries and comraderie have made this one of the most intense and unique arrangements in college sports. The first Big 5 game was played on December 14, 1955, with Saint Joseph s defeating Villanova, The anniversary will be commemorated this season with a number of events, with one of the feature games being the nationally-televised Saint Joseph s - Villanova matchup on February 7.
