2 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 2 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI In 10 years at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Although he swept the National Coach of the Year honors in 2004, Martelli turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job in as the Hawks were faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the squad that went 30-2 and posted a perfect regular season (27-0). After the Hawks struggled in the early going, Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. For his efforts, he was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that Martelli had guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s 10-year career record is now , but more impressively, his teams have gone in the past five seasons (not counting this year). He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and is fourth in winning percentage (.647). Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), the coach has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 10 seasons. Martelli is in Atlantic 10 play, ranking him third on the A-10 s list for conference regular season victories. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most. His 16 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 10 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of coaching legend Jack Ramsay s total of 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.695 postseason winning percentage (16-7). The coach has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in five consecutive years, with three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 10 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball having served as a USA assistant coach for gold-medal winning teams at both the 2001 FIBA World Championship for Young Men and the 1998 Goodwill Games. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a number-one national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. Dave Mallon forced the overtime with a 3-pointer at the buzzer in regulation after Abdulai Jalloh missed one with :02 to play. Davidson grabbed the momentum at the beginning of the extra period and scored five straight points to put the Hawks in an hole. The Wildcats would lead by as much as eight points, and SJU could come no closer than SJU trailed at halftime, and by as much as 11 in the second half, but Dwayne Lee scored all 18 of his career-high points in the final half and the OT to pull the Hawks closer. Trailing with 1:28 left in regulation, SJU converted quickly on each possession and continued to send the home team to the foul line. With Davidson up with 18 seconds to play, Stachitas nailed a 3-pointer at :12 to pull the Hawks within one. Two more free throws gave Davidson the lead setting the stage for Mallon s tying shot. Both teams shot over 80 percent from the foul line and they took a combined 68 free throws. Other Hawks in double figures were Ahmad Nivins with 14, and Mallon and Rob Ferguson with 13.

He set 65 points as a goal, but thought it could be a struggle. The Hawks have gone well beyond that, hitting for 70 or more in the first two wins and then re a c h- ing 94 points in the overtime loss at Davidson (100-94). SJU is now averaging 78.7 points per game. On the down side, the Hawks scoring defense average is thrown off a bit SJU held its first two foes to under 50 points. But by giving up 100 to Davidson, the Hawks opponents are now averaging 62.7 ppg. BALANCED AT TA C K : After losing one of the top scorers in school history in Pat Carroll, there was a preseason question as to who would e m e rge as a top score r. The Hawks have taken the more balanced a p p roach with four players currently averaging double figures. C h e t S t a c h i t a s is ahead of the pack with his 18.7 average, while A b d u l a i J a l l o h (12.3), Rob Ferg u s o n (11.3) and Dwayne Lee (11.0) round out the group. SURE SHOTS: At this time last year, and for a good part of the season, the Hawks struggled from the foul line. In fact, after three games in 04-05, SJU was making just over 60 percent of its foul shots. So far this season, that doesn t look to be a problem as the team is hitting a leaguebest 84.2% of its free throw attempts. Included in that is an impre s s i v e f o r-34 perf o rmance at Davidson, led by Chet Stachitas ( f o r- 1 1 ) and Ahmad Nivins ( f o r-10). Three starters are perfect from the line after three games (Abdulai Jalloh, Ahmad Nivins, Rob Ferg u s o n ), w h i l e Stachitas is at 93.3% and Dwayne Lee is hitting 83.3%. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: The Hawks are facing a challenging schedule this year, meeting seven teams which reached the 2005 NCAA To u rnament. And when looking at ESPN s early-season predictions, SJU has 10 NCAA teams on the slate with 12 games against ESPN's preseason NCAA To u rnament bracket: Davidson, Kansas, Ohio State. Bucknell, Gonzaga, Xavier (twice), George Washington (twice), Charlotte, Pennsylvania and Villanova. SJU is currently in the midst of a eight-game stretch in which it faces seven of those teams. SLOW STA RT: Coming off of two games in which SJU jumped out to two quick double-digit leads, the Hawks were outscored 6-0 at the start of the Davidson game. Saint Joseph s also allowed Davidson to run off five straight points at the start of the second half, falling into an 11-point deficit. And then despite battling to force an overtime, the Hawks saw Davidson score the first five points in the extra period, for a deficit they could not overc o m e. SOPHOMORE STA N D O U T: Rob Ferg u s o n d o e s n t appear to be aff e c t e d by a sophomore jinx as he has put up double figures in two of thre e games. Ferguson is shooting an impressive 76.2 percent from the field ( f o r-21) while averaging 11.3 ppg. The sophomore had a stro n g o ffensive game at Davidson, making four of his first five shots, and going 6-for-8 in the contest before fouling out late in the game. CHECKING ON CHET: Chet Stachitas looks to have regained the form he had in the early season last year, when he topped the team in scoring. Stachitas poured in 25 points at Davidson and is now leading the Hawks with 18.7 ppg. He currently ranks 8th among the Atlantic 10 s scoring leaders. TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: SJU committed only eight turnovers at Davidson and is averaging 13 on the season. Point guard Dwayne Lee is averaging 2.0 per game, but has an assist/turnover ratio of The senior also leads the Atlantic 10 with 6.3 assists per game. SENIOR LEADERSHIP: S J U s seniors came up with big perf o rmances at Davidson. Chet Stachitas s c o red 25 points against Davidson (for the second year in a row) and Dwayne Lee s c o red all of his 18 care e r- h i g h points in the second half, as the Hawks battled back from an 11-point deficit. Dave Mallon s c o red 13 points off the bench and sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer. FOR THREE: SJU made 52.9 percent of its 3-point attempts at Fairf i e l d, going 9-for-17 from beyond the arc. Abdulai Jalloh is leading the way, hitting 80 percent (4-for-5) of his thre e s. Last year, SJU averaged pointers and point attempts.

4 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 NIVINS NUMBERS: F reshman Ahmad Nivins re g i s t e red his first collegiate double-figure game with 14 points at Davidson, while also adding nine rebounds and making all 10 of his free throw attempts. He tops the Hawks in rebounding (6.3) and blocked shots (1.67). ALL IN THE FA M I LY: There are numerous connections between the coaching staffs at SJU and Drexel. Phil Martelli was an assistant coach at SJU when Dre x e l s Bruiser Flint and Geoff Arnold were members of the team. Flint and Arnold also helped SJU to an Atlantic 10 To u rn a m e n t title in Saint Joseph s M o n té R o s s was an assistant at Drexel in the early part of his career from 1994 to This past summer, Flint s e rved as an assistant coach on Mart e l l i s staff for the USA Men s U21 World Championship team which competed in Argentina. YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Hawks put a young starting lineup on the c o u rt for the season opener. Aside from senior starters Dwayne Lee a n d Chet Stachitas, the rest of the lineup had just one career start among the three of them on opening day. Abdulai Jalloh s t a rted the '04-05 season opener (in place of the injured Pat Carroll), but he came off the bench the remainder of the year. Sophomore Rob Ferg u s o n made his first career start, while freshman forw a rd Ahmad Nivins s t a rted his first collegiate game. WELCOME BACK: The Hawks return three starters - Dwayne Lee, Chet Stachitas and Dave Mallon - from last year s squad which went and was the runner-up in the NIT. Lee averaged 9.4 points and 5.2 assists running the Hawk offense. Stachitas is the team s leading returning scorer with a 10.8 average. Mallon started 27 games, but averaged just 14.3 minutes per game. SHOOTING FOR SIX: Among the Hawks goals this season is to become the first team in Atlantic 10 history to win six consecutive regular-season titles. With five titles, SJU is currently tied with the Massachusetts teams from 1991 to HIGH PROFILE HAWKS: Saint Joseph s will make a school-record eight appearances on national television this season. The matchup with Kansas in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 6 (ESPN) tips off the Hawks national exposure. That is followed with a home game at the Palestra vs. Ohio State on Dec. 10. HEALTHY AGAIN: The good news for the Hawks is that Chet Stachitas is fully recovered from the high ankle sprain which slowed him last season. Through the first five games, Stachitas was averaging a team-high 16.4 points. He then suffered the injury vs. San Francisco on Dec. 11, and although did not miss any action, averaged 9.9 points the rest of the way. Stachitas entered the season as the squad s top perimeter shooter, after hitting 39.7 percent from the floor and 35.0 percent from 3-point range in FILLING THE VOID: For the second consecutive season, head coach Phil Martelli has to replace an Atlantic 10 Player of the Year (Pat Carroll) and a player who left early to pursue a career in the NBA (Dwayne Jones). With their departures, the Hawks also lost over 2,000 points and 1,110 rebounds. Carroll averaged 18.3 points and was named the conference s Co-Player of the Year, as well as an Honorable Mention All-America by AP. Dwayne Jones, an All-A-10 selection and the league s Defensive Player of the Year, entered the NBA Draft and although going undrafted, signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The previous year, Jameer Nelson captured national and conference player of the year honors and was a first-round NBA Draft pick along with Delonte West, who left SJU after his junior year. CLASS ACT: Fourth-year seniors Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas have had a great deal of success thus far on Hawk Hill, and will be striving to take their place among the best four-year classes in school history. The trio has now compiled a record (78.2 winning percentage) in their four years to date. The school record is set by Jameer Nelson and Tyrone Barley, while last year s duo of Pat Carroll and John Bryant compiled a mark. OUT OF ACTION: Junior forward Arvydas Lidzius will not participate in games for the remaining of the semester in order to concentrate on academics. He will be able to practice, but will not travel with the team. His progress will be evaluated at the end of the semester to determine his status for future games. JERSEY GUYS: Starting point guard Dwayne Lee welcomes former high school teammate Ahmad Nivins into the starting lineup. The duo played for scholastic power St. Anthony High School in Jersey City. Lee and Nivins are among those featured in the book, The Miracle of St. Anthony, which chronicles a season with the team. TRI-CAPTAINS: Seniors Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas were voted tri-captains by their teammates. DEE-FENSE: The Hawks defense was one of the keys to the resurgence in the second part of the season. In 04-05, SJU was 21-3 when holding its opponents to 60 points or less. Overall, SJU s opponents averaged just 58.6 points per game and 53.4 in conference contests. On the season, the Hawks were 14-2 when the opponents scored in the 50 to 59 point range. Saint Joseph s ranked ninth in team defense in the NCAA statistics last season. TO THE POINT: After averaging just 7.8 minutes per game his first two seasons, Dwayne Lee did an impressive job as the Hawks starting point guard last year. Lee came into his own and in the second half of the season was one of the top assist men in the Atlantic 10. Through the final 10 games of the regular season, Lee averaged 5.8 assists and just 1.6 turnovers. Overall, the point guard handed out 5.2 assists per games and 5.8 in league games. RACKING THEM UP: SJU ranks 15th among Division I basketball programs for average amount of wins over the last five years. Prior to this season, the Hawks compiled a record (75.3 pct) in the past five seasons, averaging 24.4 victories per year NUMBERS: Hawks have won 23 games in the calendar year of SJU s turnaround last season started in January and by winning 21 games, it was one of six teams in the nation to do so. Louisville, Illinois, Pacific, Arizona and Vermont were the others.

5 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 SIGN THEM UP: Phil Martelli locked up another strong recruiting class as four scholastic standouts signed national letters of intent to attend SJU in the fall of The class is one of seven from the Atlantic 10 to be ranked among the nation s top 50 by Hoop Scoop. 8 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 8 SEASON OF CELEBRATIONS ON THE AIR The season is a special one for Saint Joseph s and Philadelphia basketball. It marks the 50th anniversary of the Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot and also the golden anniversary of the Philadelphia Big 5. RADIO: All Hawk games are broadcast on SportsTalk 950 (WPEN-AM) with the Saint Joseph s Sports Network team of Tom McCarthy and Joe Lunardi providing play-by-play and color commentary, respectively. The broadcast of Saint Joseph s basketball can also be heard via the internet at McCarthy, in his third year with SJSN, is one of the play-by-play broadcasters and hosts of the Philadelphia Phillies pre- and post-game shows. Lunardi, in his 16th year on the Hawks radio broadcasts, is the Assistant Vice President for University Communications at the Saint Joseph s, and is a college basketball analyst for ESPN. SJU broadcasts can also be accessed by Teamline, calling (access code 4280). THE HAWK The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for almost half a century, and celebrates its golden anniversary in One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. Brennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for t h ree years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to e v e ry game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. A n d rew Moral is this year s Hawk mascot, and the 29th student to wear the wings. He is a senior elementary education major from North Wales, PA. THE BIG 5 The Philadelphia Big 5 was born on November 23, 1954, when administrators at the five major Universities in the city f o rmulated a partnership. They agreed to participate in a men s basketball round robin- the City Series - at the Palestra on Pennsylvania s campus. For 50 years, the rivalries and comraderie have made this one of the most intense and unique arrangements in college sports. The first Big 5 game was played on December 14, 1955, with Saint Joseph s defeating Villanova, The anniversary will be commemorated this season with a number of events, with one of the feature games being the nationally-televised Saint Joseph s - Villanova matchup on February 7. HAWKTALK : Phil Martelli s HawkTalk celebrates its 10th anniversary in The most unique coach s television show in college basketball, it was named the Best Coach s Show in the Nation by The Sporting News. Martelli s show combines a Tonight Show format with unique guests and just a few basketball highlights. INTERNET: Information for Saint Joseph s basketball is found at SJU s athletics website, Game notes, live in-game statistics for all Hawk home games, and selected road games, and streaming audio of every radio broadcast can be accessed at the site.
