THE PERFECT SEASON Nearly every day was media day for the Saint Joseph s Hawks last year as the season of a lifetime was well-documented nationally. People from coast to coast could sense there was something special about the team and the Hawks were besieged everywhere by autograph seekers and well-wishers. A game with St. Joe s became the hottest ticket in town as the Hawks sold out seven of their last eight road games. Admist all the hoopla, the Hawks never lost their focus and gave the University and college basketball a memorable season. 56

THE PERFECT SEASON 57

THE PERFECT SEASON By Joe Lunardi 82 Assistant Vice President for University Communications, Saint Joseph s University College Basketball Analyst - ESPN, Saint Joseph s Sports Network The most memorable season in Saint Joseph s history began in the World s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, when the Hawks defeated #10 Gonzaga in a nationally-televised game. Close to 6,000 SJU faithful made the trip to New York City to give the Hawks a decided home court advantage. 58 A perfect season. No. 1 rankings. The nation's top player and coach. Saint Joseph s University. The Saint Joseph's Hawks were all that. And so much more. The newspaper clippings and television highlights were merely end points in a year-long drama. What came first were 15 ordinary young men, each coached to achieve extraordinary things. For 94 seasons, men's basketball at Saint Joseph's had been on the edge of a national stage. In year number 95, it took center stage, delivering a set of performances the likes of which the university had never seen. The Hawks' season became among the most acclaimed in the history of Philadelphia sports, and the boundless joy that followed turned this consummate team into the best college basketball story in a generation. There were hints of something special one year earlier, but the Hawks limped home literally and figuratively from the NCAA Tournament. That team had played some of the finest basketball in school history, yet timing and injuries prevented it from fulfilling any greater destiny. The status of star point guard Jameer Nelson only added to the uncertainty. Nelson was a legitimate pro prospect, more than good enough to leave school after his junior season. But the vagaries of the NBA draft, combined with the chance to make history as a senior, brought Nelson back to Hawk Hill. It took only 40 minutes for that decision to be validated. In the world's most famous arena New York's Madison Square Garden Nelson and the Hawks ripped 10th-ranked Gonzaga in the season opener. Over 6,000 Saint Joseph's faithful turned the Garden into "Fieldhouse North," and head coach Phil Martelli's 150th career victory was the first of an unprecedented 11 national television appearances for the university. Nelson's player of the year campaign couldn't have started any better. More importantly, the Hawks served notice that they would be no one's easy mark. Who knew this would hold true for almost four months and an unthinkable 26 more games? The non-conference victories were stacking up like early Christmas presents. Nelson hit a near-halfcourt shot to seal a win at Old Dominion; the Hawks were workmanlike in consecutive Palestra victories over Pennsylvania, Boston College and Drexel; then it was Nelson again in the final seconds, stunning Cal-Berkeley and a Bay Area crowd at the Pete Newell Challenge. The holidays brought a No. 10 ranking in the polls, and Saint Joseph's entered the new year with a matching 10-0 record. This was now the fourth straight season in which the Hawks were nationally ranked and, of the nine teams in program history to be so honored, five have come during the Phil Martelli era. Surely a loss was coming, though, as it had been 13 years since any team had successfully navigated an undefeated regular season. Instead, the Hawks met the looming Atlantic 10 schedule with an even greater resolve. It was indeed special when the Hawks visited Xavier in mid- January. SJU's 4-0 conference record meant nothing as the Musketeers built a six-point halftime advantage. A still-perfect 14-0 overall record Jameer Nelson and Delonte West established themselves as the best backcourt in the nation, and were mentioned as one of the best duos in the storied tradition of Philadelphia basketball. was in further jeopardy when Xavier managed a one-point lead with 3:08 remaining. But this was the day Saint Joseph's showed the nation it was more than a one-man team. West made every shot he took 12 from the field, three from the arc and six from the line for a career-high 33 points. Fellow junior Pat Carroll, whose shooting had been off all season, broke through with a pair of critical three-pointers that would kick-start a personal second half surge. When the Hawks woke up on January 19th, they were No. 3 in the nation and the toast of the town. West joined Nelson and the country's top sixth man, senior co-captain Tyrone Barley, in a backcourt now acknowledged as the best in the land. Barley had added timely three-point shooting to his withering defensive arsenal, becoming a game-altering presence at both ends of the floor. No guards in the country were able to match the speed, intensity and unselfish play of the Saint Joseph's trio. Others had settled into equally important roles. Carroll's confidence soared after the Xavier game and his backup at small forward, sophomore Chet Stachitas, set a career-high four different times throughout the course of season. Stachitas contributed a little of everything scoring, rebounding and hustling defense while becoming the team's top scholar-ath-

lete and earning his own cheering section at the Fieldhouse. Up front, starters John Bryant and Dwayne Jones were the Hawks' alleged weak spots. Yet it was Bryant, a junior forward, and Jones, a sophomore center, who consistently held opposing frontcourts below their average and combined for 89 of SJU's 110 blocked shots. For the second year in a row, the Hawks were among the nation's leaders in field goal percentage defense. The bench, led by Barley and Stachitas, was an asset all year long, especially when Martelli went to his signature fourguard lineup. Also in that mix was sophomore Dwayne Lee, the heir-apparent at the point position, another defensive terror with an improving offensive game. Forward Dave Mallon, a starter as a freshman, played fewer minutes as a sophomore due to lingering foot and achilles injuries, but his key three-pointer helped expose Texas Tech in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Also contributing up front were a pair of frosh, center Artur Surov and forward Arvydas Lidzius, who combined for 35 appearances and almost 10 minutes per game. Redshirt freshman Robert Ferguson looks forward to his first appearance in A quartet of walk-ons, led by seniors Brian Jesiolowski and the ever-subdued Robert Hartshorn, were valuable practice players. Sophomore Rob Sullivan and freshman Andrew Koefer have big shoes to fill as future upperclassmen. Assistant coaches Matt Brady, Monte' Ross and Mark Bass completed the package with their unseen, yet invaluable contributions. The Hawks, meanwhile, just kept rolling along. Their record at the end of January, with exactly two-thirds of the regular season in the books, was February began with another nationally televised contest, this one at archrival Villanova. With limited tickets available to SJU fans, the university turned Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse into a virtual game site. Thousands came, many in their regular season seats, to watch a "Battle on the Big Screen." What they saw was another convincing Hawk victory, keyed by a 23-3 first-half run and clutch shooting in the final minutes by Carroll and West. The next opponent was a jinx. Atlantic 10 West Division leader Dayton came calling on the same day Jameer Nelson landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated. It didn't matter. West, Nelson and Barley combined for 54 points in an unexpectedly easy victory. Five days later the Hawks moved up to No. 2 in the polls, passing Duke and trailing only fellow unbeaten Stanford. "Duke and Stanford are in excellent company," quipped new university president Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. At 23-0, Saint Joseph's sustained excellence had brought the school and the program to the brink of history. Newspapers across the country carried daily updates on the last of the unbeatens. Who would blink first? Not the Hawks. A potential City Series challenge from Temple turned into a Palestra coronation. The Hawks shredded the Owls for a second time, sweeping the Philadelphia Big 5 for the second year in a row and running their winning streak over city opponents to 13 straight. The average margin of victory in those normally tight matchups was 17.5 points per game. With no more local challengers, the Hawks took to the road for one final push. An easy win at UMass set up a hair-pull at Rhode Island in the next-to-last regular season game. A hairless Dick Vitale was in the house when Delonte West hit one of the biggest shots of the year as the Hawks escaped, The season finale was more ceremony than competition. With the Fieldhouse stuffed like never before, Saint Joseph's could not possibly lose on the night Barley, Hartshorn, Jesiolowski and Nelson were introduced for the last time. The nation tuned in on multiple networks as SJU reached the finish line ahead of Stanford. Nelson's number 14 would never be worn again, and the Hawks' 27-0 record like the team itself would stand forever. The Hawks did finally lose a game, with Xavier extracting a fair measure of revenge in the Atlantic 10 playoffs, but Saint Joseph's had already earned the school's first-ever No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A new season was about to begin, and it would include all of the exhilaration and exhaustion that only March Madness can bring. The Hawks routed Liberty in round one, setting up a tidy little match up with Bob Knight and Texas Tech in the second round. More was at stake than a berth in the NCAA's Sweet 16. A small, but vocal group of media naysayers was waiting to slap the "pretender" label on a team they believed didn't deserve a place at the grown-up's table. Saint Joseph's would have none of it. A 24-2 first-half run erased an early Texas Tech lead, then Carroll and Nelson converted late three-pointers to hold off a Red Raider charge. Two other No. 1 seeds had not advanced, so the Hawks were heading to the East Rutherford regional as the tournament headliners. The players, the coaches and, most impressively, Saint Joseph's University itself, were now on the greatest stage of all. And still the Hawks weren't finished. ACC power Wake Forest became victim No. 30 in a dramatic regional semifinal game. Saint Joseph's was now 40 minutes from the Final Four, and its journey would be magical for another 39 minutes and 53 seconds. What happened in those final seven seconds is not how this incomparable team will be remembered. What lasts are the personalities, the achievements, the composure and the class, the 355 days without tasting defeat. What lasts is the excellence and the striving, and the way in which both reflected so genuinely upon Saint Joseph's University. What lasts is greatness, and the Saint Joseph's Hawks are a part of college basketball and Philadelphia sports history because they reached that elusive level. And then some. After the win over St. Bonaventure on March 2, the Hawks celebrated their achievement of going 27-0 through the regular season with a post-game ceremony to the delight of the 3,200-plus fans. 59

THE PERFECT SEASON What They Said About the Hawks... "Hey, Philadelphia. What a sight to see. Get your tickets early. Line up to see the Jameer Nelson show. College basketball at its best level. This is for real!" DICK VITALE ESPN college basketball analyst "When Jameer came back, we thought about winning a national championship. But coach [Martelli] made sure we didn't get ahead of ourselves. All we ever talked about was winning the next game." DELONTE WEST SJU junior guard "You have to seize the moment when you have a special team, and St. Joe's has a very special team. I'm very proud of the fact that they're in our league." JOHN CHANEY Temple University head coach Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame "On January 17, we beat Xavier on national television. On January 18, a certain football [the Philadelphia Eagles] team lost an NFC championship game. Starting on January 19, every week has been Super Bowl week. I said in '96 when we got to the NIT finals, it can't get any better than this. And I'm sure I said in '97, it can't get better than the Sweet 16. I hope I'm here on this earth if it's any better than what's happened in '03-04." DON DIJULIA SJU associate vice president/director of athletics "Saint Joseph's hasn't really changed appreciably. It's still the same quality institution. It's the same high-level education. The same kinds of people keep coming here. "When I started at Saint Joseph's in the fall of 1942, in the early years of World War II, there were about 250 students, one building and no gymnasium. It's changed a lot since then. "But it's still 'small college.' It's still very intense and loyal with its following. It's great." DR. JACK RAMSAY '49 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame "We weren't gonna' beat Gonzaga, and we did. We weren't gonna' win at Cal, and we did. We weren't going 16-0 in the Atlantic 10, and we did. "We weren't gonna' sweep the city again, and we did that. We weren't gonna' beat Texas Tech, and we did. We weren't beating Wake [Forest], and we did. "It's not about sticking our chests out. We won 30 games and went to the Elite Eight. Connecticut won a championship, but I coached the top team in college basketball this year. "It's the best story in America, and it should be celebrated." PHILMARTELLI SJU head coach "Every once in a while there's a story reminding us why we do what we do. This season that story belongs to the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team, which is on the doorstep of a perfect season. No school without major college football has ever - ever - had an undefeated season in major college basketball. "With only 3,800 students, Saint Joseph's is a city school with resources stretched so thin that incoming freshmen are often bunked six deep in the dorm lounges or the men's lacrosse team practices at night, in the dead of winter, because the school's only field is overbooked. "I know this first-hand. I teach part-time there in the English department. And I had Jameer Nelson and Delonte West in my journalism class. And guess what? They showed up. They did the work. And they got good grades. "It all works at Saint Joseph's because the adults in charge, head coach Phil Martelli and athletic director Don DiJulia, wake up every morning thinking how they plan to do the right thing, not the other way around. They teach responsibility and accountability and, in the world of troubled college athletics, whether Saint Joseph's finishes undefeated or not, that will be the legacy of this remarkable season." SAL PAOLANTONIO ESPN reporter "I wanted a great education. I wanted to be a role model. St. Joe's made all this come true. Coming back to school, this school, was the best decision I ever made in my life." JAMEER NELSON SJU senior guard 60
