Saint Joseph s has won four of its season openers in the past six years, and two of the last three. The Hawks have won games in the calendar year 005, and were one of only six teams in the nation to have done so. Louisville, Illinois, Pacific, Arizona and Vermont were the others. Phil Martelli, now in his th season, owns a 5-5 record in season openers. The Hawks have won two of their last three. This is the first time since -00 that the Hawks will be opening the season on their homecourt. Freshman Ahmad Nivins is expected his collegiate debut in the starting lineup. Current sophomore Abdulai Jalloh also got the starting nod in his first game last season as a replacement for the injured Pat Carroll. With the Saint Joseph s women s team also opening up its season tonight in the Fieldhouse, it is the first SJU basketball doubleheader since December, 00. HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI In years at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Although he swept the National Coach of the Year honors in 004, Martelli turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job in as the Hawks were faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the squad that went 30- and posted a perfect regular season (-0). After the Hawks struggled in the early going, Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to wins in the calendar year of 005. Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (4-) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. For his efforts, he was named the Atlantic Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that Martelli had guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s -year career record is now 03-, but more impressively, his teams have gone -40 in the past five seasons. He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and is fourth in winning percentage (.4). Setting the school record for wins in a season in 004 (30), the coach has guided SJU to 0 or more victories five times in seasons. Martelli is 5-55 in Atlantic play, ranking him third on the A- s list for conference regular season victories. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most. His postseason wins ( NCAA, NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of coaching legend Jack Ramsay s total of. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.5 postseason winning percentage (-). The coach has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in five consecutive years, with three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his seasons. In the summer of 005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball having served as a USA assistant coach for gold-medal winning teams at both the 00 FIBA World Championship for Young Men and the Goodwill Games. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a number-one national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 4th head coach in 5 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season (5-) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. For the second straight year, SJU s season ended in heartbreaking fashion in front of a national audience as South Carolina defeated the Hawks, 0-5, in the title game. A 3-pointer by Tarrence Kinsey with.3 seconds remaining gave USC the title. Kinsey let his winning shot go just seconds after Pat Carroll tied it for the Hawks (4-) with a three of his own. Carroll struggled during the game, going 5-for- and -of-3 from 3-point range. South Carolina took a 50-4 lead with a layup at :0 and then made it 5-4. Dwayne Lee cut it to 5-5 with a driving layup with :0 left, but USC answered to push the lead back up to three points. Kinsey made two free throws to make it 5-5 with.4 seconds remaining, but Chet Stachitas hit a 3-pointer to bring the Hawks within two points. After a missed attempt by Stachitas with 3.5 to go, Carroll got free soon after the inbounds pass and drilled the tying shot from in front of his bench. The crowd of,555 - made up of mostly Saint Joseph's fans - erupted only to have their cheers silenced seconds later by Kinsey's only 3 of the game.

Lee averaged.4 points and 5. assists running the Hawk offense. Stachitas is the team s leading returning scorer with a. average. Mallon started games, but averaged just 4.3 minutes per game. SHOOTING FOR SIX: Among the Hawks goals this season is to become the first team in Atlantic history to win six consecutive regular-season titles. With five titles, SJU is currently tied with the Massachusetts teams from to. The Hawks advanced to last year s conference championship game but fell to George Washington. HEALTHY AGAIN: The good news for the Hawks is that Chet Stachitas is fully recovered from the high ankle sprain which slowed him last season. Through the first five games, Stachitas was averaging a team-high.4 points. He then suffered the injury vs. San Francisco on Dec., and although did not miss any action, averaged. points the rest of the way. Stachitas is the squad s top perimeter shooter, hitting 3. percent from the floor and 35.0 percent from 3-point range. FILLING THE VOID: For the second consecutive season, head coach Phil Martelli has to replace an Atlantic Player of the Year and a player who left early to pursue a career in the NBA. Last season, Pat Carroll averaged.3 points and was named the conference s Co- Player of the Year, as well as an Honorable Mention All-America by AP. Dwayne Jones, an All-Atlantic selection and the league s Defensive Player of the Year, entered the NBA Draft and although going undrafted, signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The previous year, Jameer Nelson captured national and conference player of the year honors and was a first-round NBA Draft pick along with Delonte West, who left SJU after his junior year. CLASS ACT: Fourth-year seniors Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas have had a great deal of success thus far on Hawk Hill, and will be striving to take their place among the best four-year classes in school history. The trio has compiled a - record (.5 winning percentage) in three years. The school record is - set by Jameer Nelson and Tyrone Barley, while last year s duo of Pat Carroll and John Bryant compiled a -33 mark. TEAM TURNAROUND: The Hawks struggled in the early going last season, with a 3- record. After changing their style of play, the Hawks won games in January and made their fifth consecutive postseason appearance, winning five games to reach the NIT finals. TRI-CAPTAINS: Seniors Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas were voted tri-captains by their teammates. DEE-FENSE: The Hawks defense was one of the keys to the resurgence in the second part of the season. In 04-05, SJU was -3 when holding its opponents to 0 points or less. Overall, SJU s opponents averaged just 5. points per game and 53.4 in conference contests. On the season, the Hawks were 4- when the opponents scored in the 50 to 5 point range. Saint Joseph s ranked ninth in team defense in the NCAA statistics last season. TO THE POINT: After averaging just. minutes per game his first two seasons, Dwayne Lee did an impressive job as the Hawks starting point guard last year. Lee came into his own and in the second half of the season was one of the top assist men in the Atlantic. Through the final games of the regular season, Lee averaged 5. assists and just. turnovers. Overall, the point guard handed out 5. assists per games and 5. in league games. JERSEY GUYS: Starting point guard Dwayne Lee will welcome former high school teammate Ahmad Nivins into the starting lineup. The duo played for scholastic power St. Anthony High School in

LOOKING AHEAD: The Hawks have a quick turnaround and travel to F a i rfield for a game Monday night at :30 p.m. After the holiday, SJU visits Davidson on Saturday afternoon, Nov.. RACKING THEM UP: SJU ranks 5th among Division I basketball programs for average amount of wins over the last five years. The Hawks have compiled a -40 record in the past five seasons, averaging 4.4 victories per year and a winning percentage of.53. HIGH PROFILE HAWKS: Saint Joseph s will make a school-record eight appearances on national television this season. The matchup with Kansas in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. (ESPN) tips off the Hawks national exposure. That is followed with a home game at the Palestra vs. Ohio State on Dec.. A- EXPANSION: The Atlantic Conference has expanded to 4 teams this year with the addition of Charlotte and Saint Louis. The league will abandon the two-division format and be one, 4-team entity. The A- now encompasses eight states and the District of Columbia, and places the conference in of the top 5 media markets in the country. Rivera - signed national letters of intent to attend SJU in the fall of 00. Martelli and the five other Division I coaches in the city (Drexel, La Salle, Penn, Temple, Villanova) comprise the Philadelphia Coaches vs. Cancer group, which has become the most successful group in the nation. The six coaches have banded together and raised over $500,000 last year to fight the disease, while setting a goal of $ million for this year. The Philadelphia group was honored with the Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Award by the NABC at the 004 NCAA Final Four. One of the main events for Coaches vs. Cancer this year will be the third annual BasketBall, a black-tie event on April. SEASON OF CELEBRATIONS The season is a special one for Saint Joseph s and Philadelphia basketball. It marks the 50th anniversary of the Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot and also the golden anniversary of the Philadelphia Big 5. THE HAWK The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for almost half a century, and celebrates its golden anniversary in One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. Brennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 0 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 5, a -5 win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to e v e ry game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. A n d rew Moral is this year s Hawk mascot, and the th student to wear the wings. He is a senior elementary education major from North Wales, PA. THE BIG 5 The Philadelphia Big 5 was born on November 3, 54, when administrators at the five major Universities in the city f o rmulated a partnership. They agreed to participate in a men s basketball round robin- the City Series - at the Palestra on Pennsylvania s campus. For 50 years, the rivalries and comraderie have made this one of the most intense and unique arrangements in college sports. The first Big 5 game was played on December 4, 55, with Saint Joseph s defeating Villanova, 3-0. The anniversary will be commemorated this season with a number of events, with one of the feature games being the nationally-televised Saint Joseph s - Villanova matchup on February.
