He did not make the trip to Charlotte on Wednesday. SJU s next victory will be Phil Martelli s 250th in his 13-year career. This is the first Big 5 game of the year for the Hawks. SJU has finished in second place the last two years with a 3-1 record each year, with the lone loss coming to. Former Hawk star Rap Curry is Saint Joseph s inductee into the Big 5 Hall of Fame class of Senior Rob Ferguson recorded his 1,000th career point at Charlotte and now has 1,001. Ahmad Nivins was named the Big 5 Player of the Week for Jan. 14 after averaging 21.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two victories. Pat Calathes tops the Hawks in scoring (18.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.3) and is second in assists (2.6). Tasheed Carr leads the Atlantic 10 in assists with 6.6 per game and ranks ninth in the latest NCAA statistics. Ahmad Nivins was eighth in field goal percentage (63.8) at the start of this week. 3 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 3 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI Now in his 13th year at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene, while earning his place among the top coaches in the school s storied history. Martelli reached a significant milestone in , when he surpassed Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay for second place on the school s all-time list for wins. His 12-year career mark now stands at , while he ranks fourth in career winning percentage (.633) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season (30) in 2004, Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 12 seasons. More impressively, his teams have gone in the past seven seasons, an average of 23 wins per year. He is in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A- 10. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.680 postseason winning percentage (17-8) and has taken SJU to the postseason in six of the last seven years, and eight times in his 12 seasons. Guiding a young squad in , the Hawks went 18-14, marking the eighth time that he has led them to 18 or more wins. Martelli turned in a top-notch coaching performance in , as the Hawks went from a record in February to win the final five games of the regular season, and three straight in the conference tournament, to reach the Atlantic 10 championship for the second year in a row, falling just one point short of the title. That effort was similar to where he turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in , when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA firstround draft picks from the squad that went 30-2, the Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that he guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 12 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a numberone national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight, falling two points shy of the Final Four. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. At Kenrick, he led his team to six straight Catholic League playoff appearances, a school re c o rd, and still owns the school's all-time mark for wins with 108. M a rtelli began his career as the junior varsity coach at Cardinal O'Hara High in Springfield, Pa., in He moved on the following year to become an assistant at his alma mater, and helped guide Widener to the NCAA Division III Final Four. After that season, he accepted the head job at Kenrick. As a player, he was part of Wi d e n e r s NCAA To u rnament teams in both and , serving as team co-captain as a senior. Martelli has added a new title to his resumé, that of "author." The coach has cowritten a book, "Don't Call Me Coach: A Lesson Plan for Life" with Harold Gullan, Ph.D, which was published in the fall of Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Robert Morris University, and Elizabeth is a junior attending Saint Joseph s. 4 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 LAST TIME OUT: Charlotte overcame a second-half rally by Saint Joseph's to beat the Hawks, 70-66, in Halton Arena, ending a five-game winning streak for SJU. Rob Ferguson scored his 1,000th career point in the game, with just over six minutes to go. He became the 45th player in Hawk history to reach the milestone and after finishing the game with nine points, has 1,001 in his career. Pat Calathes scored 19 points, Garrett Williamson had 12 and Darrin Govens scored 11 for the Hawks. SJU trailed with 12:40 to go in the game, and then when trailing by 11 points with 9:07 to go, the Hawks went on a 12-1 run. Williamson, who sparked the rally with three steals and four points, tied the score with a layup at 3:47. The Hawks then led twice, the last at on a pair of Williamson free throws with 1:29 left, but Leemire Goldwire, who finished with 36 points, hit a 3- pointer 15 seconds later to put Charlotte in the lead to stay. The Hawks played without Tasheed Carr (ankle injury), but saw D.J. Rivera return to action after sitting out the first semester to concentrate on academics. INJURY REPORT: Tasheed Carr is questionable for the game after spraining his right ankle in practice last Monday. He did not make the trip to Charlotte with the Hawks because of the injury. DOUBLE DUTY: Pat Calathes has recorded double-doubles in four of his last five games, with the most recent being the 22 point-10 rebound effort vs. Richmond. He now has nine double-doubles in his career. AHMAD S WEEK: Ahmad Nivins was named the Big 5 Player of the Week (Jan. 14) for helping the Hawks to two victories last week. Nivins averaged 21.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in the two games. His effort included a career-best 31 points and six blocks at UMass. It is his first honor of the season and marks the third week in a row that a Hawk has earned the Big 5 award, as Pat Calathes won it two consecutive weeks. AN ELITE CLUB: Rob Ferguson became the latest member of SJU s 1,000- point club, reaching the plateau with his eighth point at Charlotte, with over six minutes to go in the game. He is the 45th Hawk to reach the plateau and now has 1,001 points. Ahmad Nivins and Pat Calathes each surpassed the 900-point marks in the same game. HONORING A HAWK: Rap Curry is Saint Joseph s inductee into the Big 5 Hall of Fame this weekend. A three-time All-Big 5 selection who starred at SJU from , he still ranks second on the Hawks' all-time assist list with 580. The guard led the Hawks in steals during three seasons and currently ranks seventh on SJU's list with 195. The native of Landsowne, PA, and graduate of Wood High School scored 1,372 points in his career, the 19th best all-time. Curry was inducted into the Saint Joseph's Men's Basketball Hall of Fame in D.J. S BACK: Sophomore D.J. Rivera has fulfilled his academic obligations and made his season debut at Charlotte on Jan. 16, playing 20 minutes and scoring six points. Rivera did not play in any games during the first semester in order to concentrate on academics. He was able to practice with the Hawks from the start of the season, although his practice schedule was determined by Phil Martelli and the academic tutors. D.J. has demonstrated a strong desire to be a student-athlete at Saint Joseph s. The requirements were stringent and tested D.J. s resolve. He is better for having gone through the process, said Martelli. Last season, Rivera averaged 5.9 points and 2.6 rebounds in 32 games as the Hawks sixth man. SIXTH MAN: Garrett Williamson is making his mark as a solid sixth man for the Hawks, establishing his reputation on the defensive end and doing the things that don t show up in the boxscore. He did put together a careerbest offensive game, however, against Richmond with 16 points. WIlliamson went 10-for-11 from the foul line in the game. MORE ON GARRETT: Garrett Williamson was in the starting lineup at Charlotte, replacing the injured Tasheed Carr. Although WIlliamson s been a key player off the bench this year, he made starts in all but one game last season. At Charlotte, the sophomore had his second consecutive doublefigure scoring game with 12 points, while keying the Hawk rally with three steals in a one-and-a-half minute span. BROTHERS IN ARMS: Pat Calathes and his younger brother, Nick, share the distinction of being the only brothers in college basketball to be their teams leading scorers. Pat is averaging a team-high 18.1 points for the Hawks, while Nick, a freshman at Florida, is scoring 15.3 per game. PALESTRA PLAY: With the formation of the Philadelphia Big 5 in 1955, SJU began utilizing The Palestra as a home venue. Since that year, the Hawks have played at least one home game in the historic arena every season. SJU has compiled a re c o rd (.681) at The Palestra, with more wins than the program's victory total at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse (315). This is not the Hawks home game, but they will play three more in the building this year. CITY RIVALRY: This is the first Big 5 game of the year for Saint Joseph s. For the past two seasons, the Hawks have gone 3-1 in the Big 5, with the lone loss each year coming to. SJU has won a total of 19 Big 5 titles (9 outright/10 shared), which is second all-time to s 22 titles (5 outright/17 shared). A loss to on Jan. 25, 2005 snapped a 10- game Big 5 winning streak for the Hawks. KEY TO THE CITY: SJU owns a 27-7 record against city teams over the last six seasons (counting this year). This mark counts all games against Philadelphia teams (Drexel included). The Hawks have already defeated Drexel this season. PAT S WEEK: Pat Calathes has received a few Player of the Week honors during the past two weeks. He was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on Jan. 5 for the first time in his career, earning the honor with his second consecutive double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Drexel on New Year s Eve. The senior shot 7-for-9 from the field, while handing out five assists and blocking three shots. And for two straight weeks (Dec. 31 and Jan. 7), Calathes also earned top player honors from the Big 5. FINDING FERG: Rob Ferguson has averaged 12.7 points in the last seven games, while recording double figures five times. He hit for a season-high 18 points in the win over Richmond and has now upped his scoring average to 10.6 ppg. DEPTH CHARGES: The return of D.J. Rivera to the lineup should help the Hawks depth issues and give them another contributor off the bench. So far, a total of six players have seen the bulk of the minutes for Hawks, with Garrett Williamson averaging 20.8 minutes as the sixth man. No other Hawk reserve is averaging more than eight minutes per game. SJU s bench scoring has been limited as it totals 127 points, with Williamson accounting for 71 points in a reserve role. GET HIM THE BALL: The Hawks have struggled getting shots for Ahmad Nivins this year. Prior to the UMass game, Nivins was averaging just 7.2 shots per game and was not in the A-10 stats for field goal percentage because he had not met the minimum of five field goals made per game. He had a career-best 13-for-18 shooting performance at UMass, to put him in the A-10 lead for field goal percentage (63.8). But after managing just three shots at Charlotte, Nivins has again dropped out of the league rankings because he is only averaging 4.9 made field goals per game. The junior is averaging 7.7 field goal attempts per game.

5 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 STREAKING: The Hawks five-game winning streak came to an end at Charlote, but the numbers during that time told the story. These were the key team stats f rom that time: averaging 80.0 ppg with a scoring margin of shooting 51.4% from the field and 44.3% from 3-point range rebounding margin of +9.0 averaging 16.2 assists per game TAKING OVER: Tasheed Carr did what leaders do as he scored 10 key points in the final seven minutes at Fairfield. The Hawks lost their 17-point lead and saw Fairfield close to within seven points. Carr took over, hitting three field goal attempts and 3-of-5 free throws in that stretch. The junior, who joined the Hawks this year after transferring from Iowa State, was elected co-captain by his teammates before even playing in a game for SJU. Carr has always felt certain of his role, as he has the words born leader tatooed on his wrists. DEAN OF COACHES: Phil Martelli has the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches with 125 and owns the longest tenure at one school (13 years) of any of the league s coaches. Only Jim Baron of has been in the A-10 longer (15 years), but it s been at two schools, St. Bonaventure and. FRONT AND CENTER: Saint Joseph s has one of the top frontcourts in the Atlantic 10, comprised of Pat Calathes, Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins, the team s top three scorers from last season. All three averaged double figures last season and are doing the same again this year. The trio has accounted for 58 percent of the Hawks scoring this season - last year, they combine for 61 percent of the offense. BREAKING OUT: Idris Hilliard had a career-best game in the win at Siena. The freshman sparked the Hawks with a personal-best eight points, helping SJU maintain the lead in the first half. He also grabbed three rebounds. TEAM EFFORT: The Hawks own a balanced scoring effort with all five starters in double figures. They re averaging 15.1 assists per game, with Tasheed Carr leading the way with a 6.7 average. SJU AND THE THREE: Saint Joseph s has definitely used the 3-pointer to its advantage this year, as it ranks third in the A-10 in 3-point field goals made per game (7.7). But on the flip side, the Hawks have allowed their opponents to excel from behind the arc as they rank last in the conference in 3-point field goal defense (38.3%). The Hawks four losses are by a combined total of 19 points. That includes a last-second loss at Syracuse, an overtime loss to #19 Gonzaga, a five-point loss to Holy Cross and another overtime defeat at Creighton. ON THE LINE: Pat Calathes converted a career-best 13-of-13 free throws against Gonzaga and saw his streak end at 24 consecutive when he missed one against State. Last season, Calathes set the school record with 38 consecutive free throws made. He s the team s top free throw shooter, hitting 80.2 percent, and currently has a streak of 15 consecutive made. PAT S POINTS: Pat Calathes started off the year with two 20-plus point efforts and now has six on the year after hitting for 22 points against Richmond, with his fourth consecutive double-double. He went 5-for-10 effort in the win over Ball State and made six three s against Syracuse en route to a career-high 22 points. Phil Martelli sees Govens as more of shooter than a point guard, saying D a rr i n can re a l l y, really stroke the ball and he reminds me of Te rrell Myers, and that s the highest compliment I can pay a shooter at Saint Joseph s. He has a fearlessness for shooting the ball. He is a shooter - he s not a point guard. DAZZLING DEBUT: Tasheed Carr is making an impact in his first season with the Hawks after sitting out upon his transfer from Iowa State. In his debut against FDU, he had 11 points and 12 assists, just two shy of the SJU record. He followed that up with another solid performance against Syracuse with 13 points, nine assists and six rebounds. He currently leads the Atlantic 10 with 6.7 assists per game and ranks eighth in the nation. ON TARGET: Ahmad Nivins set the school record for field goal percentage last season, converting an impressive 63.1 percent, a number that also ranked as the top in the Atlantic 10. For his career, he is shooting 62.7 percent ( ) from the field, while hitting a league-leading 63.8 percent this season. FACE THE NATION: Ahmad Nivins ranks eighth field goal percentage in this week s NCAA statistics (Jan. 13) while Tasheed Carr is ninth in assists (6.7). As a team, the Hawks rank 27th in blocked shots (5.46), 42nd in 3- point field goal percentage (39.2) and 46th in field goal percentage (47.5). TO THE POINT: Phil Martelli prefers not to label his players as point guards or two-guard and says that they are just guards. The Hawks have showed a few backcourt combinations with either Tasheed Carr, Garrett Williamson or Darrin Govens at the point. Pat Calathes is also capable of running the offense and gives SJU a unique look with his height. NEW FACES: Charoy Bentley and Idris Hilliard comprise the Hawks freshman class. Bentley, a 5-11 guard from Harding High School in Connecticut, played there under his father, Charles. An All-State selection, he averaged 25 points per game his senior season and scored over 1,600 points in his career. Hilliard, a 6-7 forward, earned All-State honors three times while at The Hun School in New Jersey. He averaged 15.0 points and 6.2 rebounds as a senior and helped his team to the Prep A state title. IMPROVED NUMBERS: With the focus of the offense resting on their shoulders last season, Ahmad Nivins, Pat Calathes and Rob Ferguson upped their numbers, with Nivins and Calathes experiencing the more drastic change in statistics. PRESEASON PICKS: The Hawks were picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 in the preseason voting of media and coaches. Ahmad Nivins was chosen to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference First Team, with Pat Calathes earning a spot on the third team. Nivins was also one of 33 players named to the Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch List. LONE HOLDOVERS: Rob Ferguson and Arvydas Lidzius are each in their fifth year with the program and are the final players remaining from SJU s Elite Eight Team. Both were freshmen that season while Ferguson redshirted the year. Lidzius was a reserve on that team but sat out the season. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: This year the Hawks are facing seven teams which reached the NCAA Tournament last season, as well as three which appeared in the NIT. In the non-conference slate they met three teams, Boston University (Nov. 17), Holy Cross (Dec. 4) and Siena (Dec. 28), which are picked to win their leagues in THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 450 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the season. The last game in which a Hawks team did not hit a three was at Southwest Missouri State on Mar. 18, HALLMARK OF SUCCESS: Entering this season, SJU had compiled record (70.0 winning percentage) in the past seven seasons, with postseason berths in six of them. Adding in this year s record, the Hawks are (70.0 percent) over eight seasons. WALKING ON: Sophomore C.J. Brown is another new face on the team as he earned a spot on the squad this year as the Hawks only walk-on. Brown

A biology major, Brown played for the Hawks junior varsity team last year. Oldest son Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is in his first year as an assistant at Robert Morris University. 9 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 9 MARTELLI THE AUTHOR In 2007, Phil Martelli added a new title to his resumé - that of author. M a rtelli came out with his first book in S e p t e m b e r, entitled Don t Call Me Coach: A Lesson Plan for Life. The book is cowritten by the Hawks coach and Haro l d Gullan, Ph.D. In the book, Martelli passes on what he has learned from his own rich experience, which includes over 30 years of coaching at the high school and college levels. One of America s most colorf u l, outspoken, and successful coaches, M a rtelli compresses his three decades of experience into a 10-point lesson plan for life that will benefit anyone, no matter what the challenges may be. He speaks equally to teachers, pare n t s, educators, and business executives in short, to anyone who plays the role of coach in daily life. Gullan, a noted historian and sports fan, is also the author of The Upset That Wa s n t, Faith of Our Mothers, First Fathers, and Jumping T h rough Hoops. The book, which includes a forw a rd from sylvania Governor Ed Rendell, was published by Camino Books of Philadelphia (www. c a m i n o- books.com). FIELDHOUSE EXPANSION PROJECT A major expansion of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse and a dedicated center for men's and women's basketball highlight a comprehensive plan for enhancing varsity and recreational athletics at Saint Joseph s. Construction on the project began in the fall of As the home of the Hawks, the Fieldhouse is the well-loved shrine and the very heart of Saint Joseph s athletics. The expansion and renovation is an integral part of With Faith and Strength to Dare: The Campaign for Saint Joseph s University, and will preserve the storied facility while bringing the athletic complex to a level befitting such a venerable tradition. The Fieldhouse, home to Saint Joseph s University basketball since 1949, will be named for Michael J. Hagan 85 at the conclusion of the multi-year project set to begin this fall. Because of the Maguire Campus (former Episcopal Academy) acquisition, the vast needs of the University s intramural program and several varsity sports will finally be addressed, creating an opportunity to dramatically improve the infrastructure for men s and women s basketball. The three-phased project will begin with the construction of a two-story, 20,000-square-foot new wing adjacent to the existing Fieldhouse. It will add locker rooms, offices, and study rooms for men s and women s basketball, and a new Athletic Hall of Fame room. Phase II will upgrade and renovate the current sports complex by adding a dedicated practice facility with permanent wood flooring as well as locker rooms and offices for soccer, lacrosse, track, and cross country. Phase III will include a complete overhaul of the interior of the fieldhouse, followed by the construction of an upper-level concourse, expanded seating (a minimum of 1,000 seats will be added), and more. Home court advantage will be secured, and the Saint Joseph s athletic tradition will live on for years to come. Events in the new facility could begin as early as THE HAW K The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century, and celebrated its golden anniversary in One of the most famous mascots in college sport s, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and re p resenting the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. Bre n n a n, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to s e c u re an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semest e r, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. Jim Miller is the Hawk mascot for the second straight year, and the 30th student to wear the wings. He is a senior public administration major from Broomall, PA. ON THE AIR TV: Five of Saint Joseph s regular-season games will be seen nationally this season, beginning with the continuation of the rivalry with Gonzaga on November 29 on ESPNU from the Fieldhouse. ESPNU will also show the Hawks game at local rival (Jan. 26) while conference matchups with and will be seen on either ESPN or ESPN2. The annual rivalry with will be televised nationally by CSTV on February 4. Saint Joseph's will have a minimum of six conference games produced and broadcast regionally by CSTV, with the outlets to be announced. The complete broadcast schedule is on page 2. McCarthy, who spent two years as the play-by-play announcer for the New York Mets radio broadcasts, was recently named the television play-by-play announcer for the Philadelphia Phillies. He s making a return to the Philadelphia Phillies, as he worked their radio broadcasts for three years prior to the Mets job. He also announces numerous college basketball games for CSTV. Lunardi, in his 18th year on the Hawks radio broadcasts, is the assistant vice president for Marketing at Saint Joseph s, and is a college basketball analyst for ESPN.com with his popular Bracketology column. HAWKTALK : Phil Martelli s HawkTalk returns for its 12th season in The most unique coach s television show in college basketball, it was named the Best Coach s Show in the Nation by The Sporting News. 12 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 12 SJU 86- Fairleigh Dickinson 66: Saint Joseph s used its size to dominate the smaller Fairleigh Dickinson team and win its season opener, Pat Calathes had 20 points and Ahmad Nivins had 19 points and nine rebounds as the Hawks shot a sizzling 62.3 percent from the field. Senior Arvydas Lidzius helped break open the game early as he hit a career-high 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting in a 12-3 run. SJU led by as many as 18 points in the second half before FDU went on an 11-2 run to close to within But the Hawks scored nine straight points, with five from Calathes, to build the lead back to double digits. In his first game as a Hawk, Tasheed Carr had 11 points and 12 assists. Syracuse 72 - SJU 69: The Hawks fell, 72-69, at Syracuse in a back-and-forth contest in the 2007 NIT Season Tip-Off. Pat Calathes' 3-point play tied it at 24.5 seconds, but Syracuse's Jonny Flynn hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 5.3 seconds to go. The Hawks got off to a flying start, running up a 12-0 lead before Syracuse scored its first basket six minutes into the game. Syracuse came back and held a lead at halftime, but started the second half with a 12-3 run. The Orange opened a lead but SJU went on a 10-point run to cut the deficit to with 15:18 left. A putback by Rob Ferguson gave the Hawks a lead but Syracuse answered with eight straight points. Trailing by with 4:50, the Hawks fought back and tied it at at :25 on Calathes follow and free throw. That set the stage for Flynn s gamewinner. Tasheed Carr was fouled at :02 and after making the first free throw, intentionally missed the second but SJU couldn t grab the rebound. Calathes finished with 22, Darrin Govens had a career-high 22 points and Carr scored 13 points, while Ahmad Nivins was limited to three points on four shots. SJU 57- Boston University 48: Ahmad Nivins scored 18 points and matched his career high with 13 rebounds to lead SJU to a victory over Boston University, the Hawks' third win over the Terriers in less than a year. Saint Joseph's won despite not scoring a field goal over the final 9:03 and shooting 3-for-20 from 3-point range. The Hawks, who trailed by as many as seven in the first half, took a lead with 9:03 left and scored just eight free throws the rest of the way, but BU could get no closer than seven points. Darrin Govens scored 19 points for the Hawks, while Tasheed Carr added nine points, five assists and six of his team's 12 steals. SJU 74- Ball State 63: Pat Calathes scored 19 points and Darrin Govens had 15, including four 3-pointers in the second half, as Saint Joseph's defeated Ball State, 74-63, in the home opener at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Ahmad Nivins had 15 points for the Hawks, which were playing their first game since Nov. 17. The Hawks jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead but Ball State eventually took the lead, 23-22, late in the first half. SJU closed out the half with a 9-2 run to own a edge at intermission. The Hawks led six minutes into the second half, but Ball State used a 10-2 run to pull within Long-range shooting by Govens sparked the Hawks to a advantage, but the Cardinals rallied once again, cutting the lead to at the 5:03 mark. But Rob Ferguson made a layup and Govens hit another three to end the threat. Tasheed Carr finished with 13 points and five assists. #19 Gonzaga 70- SJU 65: SJU fell short in its upset bid of #19 Gonzaga, 70-65, in an overtime thriller before a raucous standing-room only crowd at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Gonzaga came out strong and led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but the Hawks clamped down, holding the Zags without a field goal for seven minutes and to trim the lead to at halftime. SJU would take its first lead on a 3-pointer by Rob Ferguson at 14:50 and then went up on a Ferguson jumper. With Gonzaga holding a lead, Tasheed Carr drove the lane and was fouled, and converted two free throws with 10.3 seconds left to tie the game. GU had two attempts at the gamewinner but they failed. In the extra period, the Hawks went cold and Ahmad Nivins missed a pair of free throws at 1:32 remaining that would ve given SJU the lead. Gonzaga would go on to make 7-of-8 free throws and Carr missed the potential tying 3-pointer with one second to play. Pat Calathes went 13- for-13 from the foul line and had a game-high 24 points and career-high five blocks. Nivins scored 14 points while Ferguson had 10. SJU 79- State 67: Ahmad Nivins had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead Saint Joseph's to a win over State at the Palestra. The win ended a nine-game losing streak for SJU against the Nittany Lions, which was the longest streak against a team on this year's schedule. The Hawks came out flat, possibly showing the side effects of their third game in five days and a tough overtime loss to #19 Gonzaga in the previous game. Despite holding a lead for much of the first half, State outscored the Hawks, 7-2, in the final minutes of the half to force a tie at intermission. SJU went on an 18-6 run to open the second half, taking a lead at 14:45. The Hawks would shoot 51.5 percent in the second half and led by as many GAME RECAPS as 24 points. State closed the gap in the final two minutes against the Hawk reserves. Nivins shot 8-for-12 from the field and 9-for-12 from the foul line, while blocking three shots. Holy Cross jumped out to an 18-2 lead in the first nine minutes as the Hawks missed their first 11 shots and turned the ball over six times in their first eight possessions. Tasheed Carr hit SJU s first shot of the game, a 3-pointer, with 5:01 left in the half, while the team fell behind at halftime. Led by Pat Calathes, who scored all 19 of his points in the second half before fouling out, SJU closed to within with 2:03 to play. But the Hawks missed five straight shots while Holy Cross hit four free throws to put the game away with a lead. Carr finished with 17 points and six rebounds, while Darrin Govens had 12 points. Creighton 90- SJU 84: Creighton overcame a four-point deficit in the final minute of regulation to force overtime and defeat Saint Joseph's, 90-84, despite a career-high 23 points from the Hawks' Tasheed Carr. After Creighton tied it, 70-70, at :14, Pat Calathes had a chance to win it at the buzzer for Saint Joseph's, but his 3-point shot bounced off the rim. Creighton scored nine of the first 11 points in the extra period. The Hawks twice closed to within four, but Creighton went 17-of-20 from the foul line in the extra period to hold on. In regulation, the game went back-and-forth, with Saint Joseph's coming back from an eight-point deficit and making a 15-5 run to take a lead at halftime. Darrin Govens had 14 points in the first half, making 3-of-6 from three-point range. The Hawks held the lead for part of the second half, but then Creighton came back and went up with 4:53 to play. Saint Joseph's scored the next eight points over two-plus minutes of action to make the score Fairfield remained in the lead until Garrett Williamson made one of two free throws to break a tie and push SJU in front by a point with 6:20 left. Farfield took the lead for the last time, 25-22, but Calathes answered with a 3-pointer which started a 13-0 run over the next four minutes, gving SJU a advantage with 1:15 remaining in the half. SJU led by as many as 17 in the second half, but the Stags used the 3-pointer to get back into the game, and cut the deficit to with over two minutes to play. The Hawks answered with a jumper by Carr and a 3-pointer by Rob Ferguson to cancel Fairfield s threat. Ahmad Nivins added 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting while the Hawks converted 52.7% from the field. SJU 74- Siena 68: Ahmad Nivins had 20 points and seven rebounds, Pat Calathes grabbed 16 rebounds and Saint Joseph's sank 10 3-pointers to beat Siena in Albany. Trailing with 1:33 to go, the Hawks scored the final nine points of the game to beat the Saints. Rob Ferguson's open 3-pointer gave the Hawks the lead for good with 1:24 left. It was Ferguson s fourth 3-pointer in four attempts on the game, as he finished with 14 points. Calathes had 14 points to go along with his careerhigh 16 rebounds, and added three steals. The biggest steal came with :26 to play and Siena trailing by three. Calathes stepped in front of a pass and took it the length of the court for a dunk to give the Hawks the lead with :12 remaining. Tasheed Carr, who had nine assists, provided the final margin with a free throw at :03. SJU 69- Drexel 51: Saint Joseph s pulled away from Drexel in the second half to score a win on New Year s Eve at the Palestra. The Hawks led six minutes into the second half, but the Dragons closed within at the 11-minute mark. Pat Calathes converted a three-point play and Tasheed Carr followed with a 3-pointer that sparked a 12-2 run that made the score The Dragons never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way. Both teams had trouble getting on track in the first half. The Hawks shot 11-for-25 with 10 turnovers and led at the break. Drexel made only 9 of 22 shots and also turned the ball over 10 times in the opening half. Calathes finished with 20 points-10 rebounds and Ahmad Nivins had 13 points. Carr (12 pts) and Rob Ferguson each finished in double figures for the Hawks, who shot 63.6 percent in the second half.

13 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 13 SJU 98- UMass 92: SSaint Joseph s got into a running game with UMass, and outscored the Minutemen, 98-92, to win the conference opener in Amherst. The Hawks were hot from the start, hitting 22-of-33 from the field in earning a halftime lead, despite the fact that UMass made eight 3-pointers. SJU went on a remarkable run, scoring 44 points over a 14-minute span covering the end of the first half and beginning of the second. The Hawks built their lead to and UMass eventually whittled it to to with just over five minutes to play, but the Hawks built it back to a 12-point lead on two occasions, the last with 36 seconds remaining. Ahmad Nivins scored at will, tallying 20 points in the first half and finishing with a career-high 31 while adding 12 rebounds and a personal-best six blocked shots. Pat Calathes had his third consecutive double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds while Darrin Govens had 15 points and a career-high eight assists. Tasheed Carr also added 14 points for the Hawks, who shot 58.5% in the game and outrebounded UMass, SJU 81- Richmond 63: Pat Calathes scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and sparked two scoring runs as Saint Joseph's won its fifth straight game, over Richmond in its first game in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse since December 4. Rob Ferguson had a season-high 18 points, and Garrett Williamson scored a careerhigh 16 for the Hawks. Trailing 11-4 six minutes into the game, the Hawks went on a 25-3 run, highlighted by three 3-pointers by Calathes, to take a lead. Richmond responded with a 15-7 run and closed to within at the half. Saint Joseph's started the second half with another outburst, scoring 22 of the next 25 points. Calathes scored 11 in the run and the Hawks led with 11:11 left. Ahmad Nivins added 13 points for SJU, which outrebounded the Spiders, Charlotte 70- SJU 66: Charlotte overcame a second-half rally by Saint Joseph's to beat the Hawks, 70-66, in Halton Arena, ending a five-game winning streak for SJU. Rob Ferguson scored his 1,000th career point in the game, with just over six minutes to go. He became the 45th player in Hawk history to reach the milestone and after finishing the game with nine points, has 1,001 in his career. Pat Calathes scored 19 points, Garrett Williamson had 12 and Darrin Govens scored 11 for the Hawks. SJU trailed with 12:40 to go in the game, and then when trailing by 11 points with 9:07 to go, the Hawks went on a 12-1 run. Williamson, who sparked the rally with three steals and four points, tied the score with a layup at 3:47. The Hawks then led twice, the last at on a pair of Williamson free throws with 1:29 left, but Leemire Goldwire, who finished with 36 points, hit a 3-pointer 15 seconds later to put Charlotte in the lead to stay.
