3 PHIL MARTELLI Head Coach Now in his 16th season as Saint Joseph s University head coach, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post season participant and a key player on the national scene, while earning his place among the top coaches in the school s storied history. The season marks his 26th year at SJU, including 10 years as an assistant coach. His career mark now stands at , while he ranks eighth in career winning percentage (.589) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season (30) in 2004, Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories six times in the previous 15 seasons. He is in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A 10. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference, or regional honor, in six of his 16 seasons. Martelli faced a challenge in with a young and inexperienced squad that went 11 20, coming off a season that saw the Hawks go for his ninth consecutive winning season. Among the highlights of was Ahmad Nivins earning AP Honorable Mention All America honors and becoming the third Hawk in six years to garner the Atlantic 10 s Player of the Year Award. Nivins was also chosen by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2009 NBA Draft, becoming the third player coached by Martelli to be drafted. The Hawks reached the Atlantic 10 Championship game for the third time in four years and earned the program s 19th bid to the NCAA Tournament, and Martelli s fifth. The 11th seeded Hawks fell to sixth seeded Oklahoma in the NCAA First Round, while ending the year at Martelli reached a significant milestone in , when he surpassed Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay for second place on the school s all time list for wins (236), while guiding a young squad to 18 wins. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.653 postseason winning percentage (17 9) and has taken SJU to the postseason in seven of the last nine years, and nine times in his 14 seasons. Martelli turned in another top notch coaching performance in , as the Hawks went from a record to win eight consecutive games to reach the Atlantic 10 championship game for the second year in a row. In , Martelli turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first round draft picks, the Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli guided SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14 2), won its fifth straight regular season title to tie the league record, earned the A 10 s top seed and reached the title game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. SJU made an exciting six game run in the NIT, falling on a last second shot in the championship game. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball. The Hawks went undefeated in the regular season, reached the pinnacle as the top ranked team in the nation and earned the school s first ever number one seed in the NCAA Tournament, while advancing to the Elite Eight. Jameer Nelson was the consensus National Player of the Year and with teammate Delonte West, were both first round selections in the NBA Draft. SJU opened the season ranked 12th in the polls and moved up throughout the year, taking the top spot on March 8, 2004, for the first time ever, while finishing fifth in the polls, for SJU s highest final ranking since Martelli joined with Nelson to sweep the national coach and player awards, marking one of the few times in history that the top player and coach were from the same school. In addition to the national awards, he was the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the third time and a repeat winner of the Big 5 Coach of the Year. Martelli s commitment to Saint Joseph s is equaled by the University s commitment to him. The coach agreed to a new contract prior to the season and then in September 2004, the University extended the coach s contract through the season. In October 2008, the commitment was taken a step further, when his contract was extended through He served as head coach of the 2005 USA Under 21 World Championship Team, which finished in fifth place finish at the FIBA U21 World Championships. A 1976 graduate of Widener, Martelli began his career on Hawk Hill with SJU's NCAA Tournament team. After 10 years as an assistant at Saint Joseph s, Martelli was named the 14th coach in school history on July 20, 1995, and just the third non alumnus to follow in the storied tradition of SJU coaches. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. He followed that in with the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles, along with a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School and had a stint as assistant coach at Widener, helping guide the Pioneers to the 1978 NCAA Division III Final Four. As a point guard at Widener, he was part of the NCAA Tournament teams in 1975 and 1976, and set the school's single season and career assist marks. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Rutgers University, and Elizabeth is a 2009 graduate of Saint Joseph s. He played another big role in the Fordham win, scoring a career high 14 points on 5 for 7 shooting, with only one turnover in 23 minutes of action. Since the UMass game on Feb. 5, Bentley is averaging 22.7 minutes prior to that, he was averaging just 7.5 minutes per game. Idris Hilliard had the fourth double double of his career, and first this season, with 13 points and 10 rebounds against Rhode Island. BEYOND THE ARC: SJU has generally struggled from 3 point range this season but hit a season best 64.7 percent in the win over St. Bonaventure, converting 11 for 17. The Hawks followed that with a 58 percent effort in the win at Charlotte. Langston Galloway has made a team high 60 long range shots, with Carl Jones hitting 52. SENIOR LEADERSHIP: Idris Hilliard put together a four game stretch (Jan ) in which he averaged 12.0 and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 60.6 percent (20 for 33) from the field. He surpassed the 800 point mark for his career in the La Salle game and is the team s third leading scorer. He recorded his 12th double figure game of the year with 10 points in the win at Charlotte. ALL AROUND FROSH: Langston Galloway is one of three freshmen in the nation to average at least 10.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Central Michigan's Trey Zeigler and Navy's J.J. Avila are the others. TOUTING TAYLOR: Walk on and crowd favorite Taylor Trevisan made the most of his one minute of action at the end of the Xavier game. The sophomore scored a career high five points in that short stretch. IT S OVER: Lasting a month, the Hawks nine game losing streak came to an end on Feb. 5 with the win over UMass, which was SJU s first of The losing streak was the second longest in school history as the squad dropped a school record 12 in a row. TAKING IT TO THE HOOP: Carl Jones has been able to generate offense both from the perimeter and inside the lane as 146 of his 494 points have come from the foul line. Jones is averaging 6.7 free throws per game, but has posted double digit free throw attempts seven times, including a 10 for 15 effort in the win over Charlotte. THE 70 S: The Hawks tied their season high total of points with 79 in the St. Bonaventure win. SJU has only hit the 70 point mark 11 times this season as they have scored 65 points or less in 13 of the last 19 games. SLOW START: In losing the first eight conference games, the Hawks recorded their worst Atlantic 10 start ever. In , SJU started out 0 5 but finished with a 7 11 conference record that season. Saint Joseph s worst ever A 10 record was a 3 13 mark in TAKING SOME TIME: Phil Martelli announced that as of January 31, Justin Crosgile had taken a leave of absence from the team to concentrate on personal issues. Crosgile played in 19 games in a reserve role, averaging 15.1 minutes and 4.8 points per game. NEW TO THE NEST: Papa Samba Ndao (pronounced NUH doe) is the newest member of the Hawks. The freshman began attending classes and practicing with the team on December 30 and despite being eligible immediately, will redshirt the season. Ndao, a 6 8, 215 lb. forward who is originally from Dakar, Senegal, played scholastically at Montverde Academy in Florida. He averaged 10 points and four rebounds for a team which had four Division I signees. CLASS DISTINCTION: Phil Martelli hasn t used the Hawks youth as an excuse this season. The year in school doesn t mean anything. There are five players out there who have practiced and prepared. And they were the most prepared group that we had. You just have to be a basketball player and some of them were basketball players tonight, he said after the Duquesne game. PERIMETER PROBLEMS: The Hawks have allowed their opponents to shoot 36.9 percent from 3 point range in overall games and 40.3 percent in conference games, to rank last in the league. Despite the win over UMass on Feb. 5, SJU saw the Minutemen convert 41.7 percent from three point range at Hagan Arena. FRESH FACES: Saint Joseph s freshman class has accounted for 55 percent of the minutes played this season (3288 of 6000 minutes) and 51 percent of the scoring (971 of 1904 points). Langston Galloway tops the Hawk frosh in minutes played, averaging 33.5, and is seventh in the A 10 averaging 34.9 minutes in conference games only. SJU also leads all schools in the A 10 with 90 freshman starts on the year. FROM THE LINE: The Hawks are one of the better free throw shooting teams in the conference. SJU ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10, hitting 70.5 percent overall. In the 15 league games, the Hawks are hitting 70.8 percent to rank seventh. Langston Galloway continues to be the Hawks best from the line, converting a league high 88.2 percent, with Carl Jones shooting 74.5 percent. FALLING BEHIND: The Hawks fell behind by double digits in 12 of 16 league games. The Rhode Island, UMass (Feb. 5) and St. Bonaventure contests are the only ones in which that didn t happen. Saint Joseph s was down by as much as 14 in the first half at Fordham, but rallied to win, making it the largest deficit (16 pts in second half) overcome for a victory this season. The Hawks were close with Richmond in the first half, but the Spiders opened up a double digit lead with 10 minutes to go.

7 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 7 SLOW STARTERS: In a few games this year, the Hawks have started out slowly, only to step up their play in the second half. The latest instance was the UMass game where the Hawks shot 17 percent in the first half and scored a season low 15 points, but then shot 41 percent in the second half. Here are the differences between the first and second halves, with shooting percentage, 3 point percentage and points scored: 1st Half 2nd Half (FG% 3Pt% Points) (FG% 3Pt% Points) Penn State 20% 10% 19 46% 27% 38 Fairfield 30% 22% 19 68% 0% 41 Princeton 40% 16% 27 51% 44% 38 Minnesota 23% 17% 26 53% 50% 47 Holy Cross 35% 57% 31 50% 43% 34 GW 35% 22% 31 52% 47% 40 Saint Louis 32% 20% 19 46% 43% 32 La Salle 41% 31% 27 53% 33% 45 UMass 34% 25% 27 57% 56% 40 Fordham 35% 35% 31 60% 64% 45 at UMass 17% 7% 15 41% 23% 36 REBOUNDING WOES: Rebounding has been one of the Hawks weaknesses for two consecutive seasons. In , the Hawks were outrebounded in all but four contests and owned a 8.0 margin. This season, Saint Joseph s has been outrebounded in 18 games, with the biggest margin being at Drexel. On the season, SJU owns a rebounding margin of 463. The Hawks biggest plus margin of the year was 11, against both Duquesne and Richmond. Only two players have notched double figure rebounds and double doubles this season Ronald Roberts with 10 boards against Duquesne and 11 vs. Fordham, and Idris Hilliard with 10 against Rhode Island. ROAD WARRIORS: Saint Joseph s owns a 4 12 road record with wins at Fairfield, Holy Cross, Fordham and Charlotte. Last year, the Hawks struggled greatly on the road, winning only one game outside of Philadelphia, at George Washington on March 3, LOSING IT: The Hawks saw two substantial leads disappear at Boston University. Saint Joseph s built up a 12 point lead in the second half, but the home team used a 27 6 run over a nine minute stretch in the period to earn the win. It was the largest lead lost this season by the Hawks. FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: Saint Joseph s is sporting one of its most youthful squads in school history, and the youngest under Phil Martelli, with a combined 11 years of college experience entering this season. The Hawks have just two seniors and one junior on the roster. At the start of the season the average age of the SJU squad was 19.8 years old. FOR STARTERS: The Hawks starting lineup has been basically the same this year although Ronald Roberts has started the past nine in place of C.J. Aiken. Langston Galloway and Daryus Quarles are the only players to start all 30 games. CLASSIC CHAMPS: Saint Joseph s was crowned as the champion of the Philly Hoop Group Classic, winning all three games against Norfolk State, Fairfield and Rutgers. HAWKS AT HAGAN: This marks the second season for the Hawks in the Michael J. Hagan 85 Arena. SJU opened the renovated and expanded homecourt on November 13, 2009, with an overtime win over Drexel. The arena was the result of a 16 month expansion and renovation of the previous on campus home, Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, which served as the Hawks' homecourt for 59 years. The Hawks posted an 8 4 record in their first year in Hagan Arena, and with 4 7 record this year, to own an all time record of playing on campus. FAMILY TIES: Freshman Langston Galloway is the nephew of assistant coach Geoff Arnold. The father of Ronald Roberts, Jr., Ron, Sr., played basketball at the University of Oklahoma from 1985 to FUTURE HAWK: Chris Wilson, a 6 2 guard, signed a Letter of Intent to attend SJU in the Fall of Wilson is from Fayetteville, N.C. and Terry Sanford High School. IF YOU BUILD IT...: Saint Joseph's basketball opened a new era on November 13, 2010 when the Hawks hosted Drexel in the inaugural game in the Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena. The Arena was the result of a 16 month expansion and renovation of the previous on campus home, Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, which served as the Hawks' homecourt for 59 years. Hagan Arena provides a number of fanfriendly renovations as well as an increase of 1,000 seats from the Fieldhouse, bringing the capacity to 4,200. Michael J. Hagan 85, and his wife, Joyce, are the lead benefactors for the most comprehensive enhancement of athletic facilities in Saint Joseph s history. A 1985 graduate of SJU, he received his bachelor s degree in accounting and was a member of the Hawks golf team. The former chairman and chief executive officer of NutriSystem, Inc., Hagan was named the 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year by Forbes magazine. The Hagans have three children, Michael, Colin and Emma. COMFORT ZONE: Saint Joseph s comprehensive expansion and renovation project also included the building of the 20,000 square foot Ramsay Basketball Center, named for Hall of Fame coach Dr. Jack Ramsay. The Ramsay Center, which is adjacent to Hagan Arena, houses offices for the men's and women's basketball programs; locker rooms and player lounges for both teams; a video study/interview room; and the Athletic Communications Office. Also Included in the Ramsay Center is the Thomas J. Wynne '63 Hall of Fame Room, which is used for pre and post game receptions as well as other functions. The men s basketball locker room is named for SJU great Jameer Nelson while the players lounge bears the name of former standout Delonte West. CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. Indiana tops the list with 11 graduates that have coached in the league. Jim O Brien was the most recent NBA head coach, but did not finish the season with the Indiana Pacers. Below is the list of former Hawks who have held positions as NBA head coaches: Player (Class) NBA Teams W L (yrs.) Jack Ramsay ( 49) Phila., Buf., Port., Ind (21) Jim Lynam ( 63) L.A. 8 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 8 HAWK CAPTAINS: Seniors Charoy Bentley and Idris Hilliard are serving as SJU s co captains this season. HAWKS IN THE PROS: Saint Joseph s is currently represented in the NBA by 2004 first round picks Jameer Nelson (Orlando Magic) and Delonte West (Boston Celtics), who are both in their seventh year in the league. Nelson earned All Star status in 2009, which was his fifth year in the league. TAKING CARE OF THEIR OWN: Phil Martelli s staff consists of three former Hawk players. Assistant coach Mark Bass was a junior on Martelli s first team in , and then was a senior on the squad that reached the NIT Final in Assistant coach Geoff Arnold played for the Hawks from 1982 to 1986, and was a member of the 1986 Atlantic 10 championship team. Arnold was a member of Martelli s coaching staff for one season in , and then returned to Hawk Hill at the start of the season. Director of basketball operations Rob Sullivan and was a member of the 2004 Elite Eight team. A GOOD CAUSE: Phil Martelli is the co chair of the Philadelphia Coaches vs. Cancer effort, which is one of the nation s highest fundraising groups for Coaches vs. Cancer. The group, which is comprised of the city s six Division I coaches and their wives, raised close to $1 million last year. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University while Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is an assistant at Rutgers University. The elder Martelli faced off against one of his sons for the first time when the Hawks defeated Rutgers on Nov. 26. SPELL IT OUT: The corporate title of Saint Joseph s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph s was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. The University should be referred to as Saint Joseph s. The abbreviations SJU or St. Joe s are acceptable in headlines or certain informal references. 10 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 10 THE HAWK The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for 55 years. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. Brennan, an ex Marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figure eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap ometer on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a tuition scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. Tim Higgins is the Hawk mascot this season, and is the 33rd student to wear the wings. He is a senior marketing major from Merchantville, N.J. ON THE AIR TV: Saint Joseph's will have a minimum of 10 games televised this season, including seven that will be seen locally in Philadelphia. Four Atlantic 10 contests will be televised regionally as part of CBS College Sports syndication package. Saint Joseph's appeared on ESPNU on December 3 in the annual rivalry game with Villanova at The Pavilion at 8:30 p.m. while the Hawks' January 29th game with Temple from The Palestra will be seen on ESPNU. Penn State 66 SJU 57 Saint Joseph's fought back from a double digit halftime deficit, closing to within six with five minutes remaining, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks fell to Penn State, 66 57, at the Bryce Jordan Center. Idris Hilliard led the way for SJU, scoring 13 points, while Langston Galloway added 11 points and nine rebounds. C.J. Aiken (12) and Carl Jones (10) were also in double figures. Neither team shot well from the floor, as Penn State was 20 of 55 (36.4%) from the field and the Hawks were 19 of 55 (34.5%) overall. With the score tied, 17 17, PSU closed the half on a 13 2 run to take a advantage into the locker room. The teams essentially traded baskets in the second half, with neither squad scoring more than five points in a row. SJU managed to claw back within seven on a Todd O'Brien dunk with 5:39 to go, and Jones' 3 pointer with 5:01 to play cut the PSU margin to six at 51 45, but PSU converted 9 of 14 free throws over the last 3:41 to salt away the victory. The Hawks trailed in the early going but took their first lead of the game, 20 19, on a jumper by Quarles. Norfolk State regained the lead quickly, 21 19, but the Hawks would score the next five points. A jumper by Langston Galloway gave the Hawks a halftime lead. After a tie Quarles made a free throw and hit another three pointer to push the Hawks' lead to Norfolk State would force one more tie, 41 41, but Todd O'Brien's layup would push the Hawks ahead again and with 5:18 to play, Quarles hit another three to give SJU a cushion.
