2 04-05 Saint Joseph s Basketball - pg. 2 Phil Martelli orchestrated the most memorable season in Saint Joseph s history and was the consensus national Coach of the Year in , as he guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball. Now in his 10th season at Saint Joseph s, Martelli is a proven winner and has built the foundation to keep the Hawk program among the nation s best. Martelli s Hawks went undefeated in the regular season, reached the pinnacle as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned the school s first-ever number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament, with the Hawks advancing to the Elite Eight. The team finished the year ranked fifth, for the school s highest final ranking since Led by consensus Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks became the first team since to go through the regular season without a loss (27-0). SJU opened the season ranked 12th in the polls and moved up throughout the year, taking the top spot on March 8, 2004, for the first time ever. It also marked a school-record fourth straight season, and fifth in Martelli s tenure, that the Hawks were ranked in the Associated Press poll. Martelli guided SJU to its fourth NCAA appearance in nine seasons, and its first back-to-back berths since The top-seeded Hawks reached the Elite Eight before falling to Oklahoma State, Martelli joined with Nelson to sweep the national coach and player awards, marking one of the few times in history that the top player and coach were from the same school. Martelli won the 2004 Naismith Award, the Henry Iba Award (USBWA), the inaugural Adolph Rupp Cup, the Coach of the Year awards from both Associated Press and CBS/Chevrolet, and the NABC CoCoach of the Year award. The squad s 30-2 mark gave SJU an impressive record over the past four seasons, and Martelli s 10-year career record is now He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and is fourth in winning percentage (.640). Setting the school record for wins last year, the coach has now guided the Hawks to 25-plus victories four times in nine seasons. His 11 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 5 NIT) are second on the school s alltime list, trailing only the legendary Jack Ramsay s 12 tournament victories (8 NCAA, 4 NIT). Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.647 postseason winning percentage (11-6), with a 6-4 NCAA record. Martelli has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in the last four years, with three trips to the NCAA Tournament. A 1976 graduate of Widener University, Martelli began his career on Hawk Hill with SJU's NCAA Tournament team. In his decade as an assistant, he was part of the Hawks NIT teams in and Martelli was named the 14th coach in school history on July 20, 1995, and just the third non-alumnus to follow in the storied tradition of SJU coaches. SJU won at Fairfield in , restarting a series that had taken a hiatus since The Hawks have won five in a row against the Stags. LAST TIME OUT: The Hawks saw their 12-game Palestra winning streak come to an end in the loss to Drexel in the Big 5 Classic. Both teams struggled to score in the turnover-plagued first half (SJU 14 - DU 13), with Drexel holding onto a halftime lead. The Dragons, led practically the entire game, and took their biggest lead, 40-28, with 12:20 remaining. SJU responded with a 10-1 run to close to with just over seven minutes to go. After Drexel increased its lead to 47-41, the Hawks scored five straight points, but then started to put DU on the foul line, where the Dragons closed it out. Dwayne Jones had his fifth career doubledouble with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Dwayne Lee added 10 points. The Hawks struggled from the perimeter, shooting just 37.9 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range. INJURY REPORT: The Hawks suffered another blow before the season opener when junior Dave Mallon was diagnosed with a stress fracture in the second metatarsal of his right foot. This week Mallon began running and doing limited work in practice with hopes of being ready for the Old Dominion game on Dec. 22. The 6-10 forward has struggled with injuries his entire career. As a freshman, Mallon had a fracture in his right fibula in the early season which did not cause him to miss any games. Last season, he suffered a stress fracture in the third metatarsal of his right foot which caused him to miss the first seven games of the year. Then, later in the year, he had a tear in the Achilles tendon of the same foot which sat him out of four games. LOOKING BACK: Tonight is the first game in the Fieldhouse since last year s 27-0 perfect regular season was achieved here on March 2 with a win over St. Bonaventure. The achievement will be recognized one more time with the raising of a banner and the distribution of the perfect season rings to the graduated members of the squad. Expected in attendance are Tyrone Barley, Brian Jesiolowski and the Hawk, Chris Bertolino. PERIMETER PROBLEMS: The Hawks are shooting just 36.5 percent from the field and only 25.4 percent from 3-point range. SJU s best shooting game this year came against Davidson at 47.3 percent.

3 04-05 Saint Joseph s Basketball - pg. 3 MOUNTING LOSSES: With two losses this season, the Hawks have already matched the total from all of last year. It also marks the first time since that SJU is under.500. HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: The Hawks own a all-time record in the cozy confines of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, and in the last four years, have posted a 40-3 record. SJU has won 11 straight in its on-campus facility, with the last last loss coming to #18 Xavier in overtime on March 5, TOUGH TICKET: With a seating capacity of only 3,200, a ticket to a Hawks game at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse is one of the toughest to obtain. SJU has played to capacity crowds in 18 consecutive games at the Fieldhouse, with all 11 contests last season being sellouts. is the only current player in the all-time Top 10. The lefthander is also the only player to lead the Atlantic 10 in 3-point shooting twice. However, Carroll s struggled since his return to the lineup and is hitting just 3-of-16 long-range shots. CHET S CHANCE: Chet Stachitas made the third start of his career vs. Davidson and responded with a career-high effort. The junior scored a personal best 25 points, hitting 9-of-13 field goals and going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Stachitas rebounded from a poor shooting effort at Kansas where he missed all six 3-point attempts. He was a key reserve for the Hawks last season, notching double figures 10 times with a career-high of 14 points. He gives the Hawks another solid long-range shooter, having converted 43.9 percent of this 3-point attempts last year. His only start prior to this year was at Richmond in 2004, replacing the injured John Bryant. LOW POINTS: The Hawks went without a field goal for 10:35 in the first half against Drexel. Their total of 19 first-half points matched that from the Kansas game. PAT S BACK: Pat Carroll made his return to the Hawks lineup against Davidson, after missing at least three weeks of practice and the season opener vs. Kansas. Carroll scored nine points in 31 minutes of action, but handed out four assists. The senior dislocated his right shoulder in practice in late October and is currently wearing a brace. The senior is the team s leading returning scorer from last season (10.1 ppg). WINNING WAYS: Pat Carroll owns one of the nation s best records as a starter during the course of his career. In his career, Carroll has 55 wins in 66 starts for a winning percentage of.833, ranking him behind Chuck Hayes of Kentucky, who is as a starter (.841 winning pct.). (Statistic compiled by the Univ. of Kentucky) BRIGHT SPOTS: The Hawks have outrebounded their foes in the past two games, which is a positive, especially since that was actually a weakness with last year s team. Dwayne Jones has been a one-man show on the boards for the Hawks, averaging 11.7 per game. The Hawks still have a negative rebounding margin (-2.3), but mainly because of the large differential in the Kansas game (KU 43-28). NEW NUMBERS: Against Davidson, Dwayne Lee reset all of the career-highs he had established at Kansas. Lee scored a personal best 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out six assists. He also set a new mark by playing 40 minutes for the first time in his career. So far he s put up numbers well above his career averages of 1.6 points per game and 7.8 minutes per game, with averages of 11.7 points and 39.0 minutes. A PAIR OF WINNERS: Much was made about Jameer Nelson and Tyrone Barley becoming the winningest four-year class in SJU history with their cumulative record. John Bryant and Pat Carroll own an impressive mark as well, and now have a record. THRUST INTO THE SPOTLIGHT: Junior guard Dwayne Lee got his long-awaited opportunity to run the Hawk offense when he made his first career start at point guard at #2 Kansas. The junior led the Hawks with a career-high 12 points in a personal best 38 minutes of action, but has since bettered those numbers. Lee has been prepared well, learning from Jameer Nelson and Tyrone Barley the past two seasons. The product of the St. Anthony s program in New Jersey entered the season averaging just 7.8 minutes and 1.6 points per game for his career. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: Dwayne Jones has worked hard on his free throw shooting and the effort is starting to pay off. Heading into this season, the junior owned a career free throw percentage of Jones has shown some improvement and is now converting 64.0 percent (16-for-25), including a career-best 7-for-8 effort vs. Davidson. THE LAST TIME THE HAWKS... : lost two in a row, was the end of the season in the A-10 Tournament (Dayton) and the NCAA Tournament (Auburn) lost two regular-season games in a row was in December 2001 FOR THREE: The 3-point field goal was an integral part of the Hawk offense last year and this season may not be much different. Last season, SJU averaged point field goals made per game, while taking an average of 24.2 long-range attempts. Returnees Pat Carroll and Chet Stachitas were two of four Hawks to shoot 40 percent or better from behind the arc. The 3-point percentage is down considerably this year, with SJU only making 25.4 percent of its 3- pointers. The team averages 5.0 made and 19.6 attempts. ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE: Coach Martelli has gone with an experienced lineup in the past two games, with all juniors and seniors (Bryant, Jones, Lee, Carroll, Stachitas) starting. Pat Carroll made his return from the shoulder injury and Chet Stachitas stayed in the starting five, replacing freshman Abdulai Jalloh, who got the start at Kansas. Although Martelli sees Stachitas being the next in the line of the Hawks solid sixth men, the coach saw the benefits of the experienced lineup in the victory. PAT S PERCENTAGE: Pat Carroll is currently the Atlantic 10 s alltime leader in career 3-point percentage at.442 (162-for-366) and

4 CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Dwayne Jones and Pat Carroll are among the Hawks all-time leaders in blocked shots and 3-point field goals, respectively. Here s how they rank: Blocked Shots Name Seasons G Blk 1. Rodney Blake Tony Costner Alexandre Sazonov Boo Williams Dwayne Jones Damian Reid Carlin Warley Maurice Martin Duval Simmonds Ron Vercruyssen Saint Joseph s Basketball - pg. 4 year. He has already blocked 10 shots this year and is averaging 3.3 per game. EXCLUSIVE CLUB: Pat Carroll is the next player who could possibly join the 1,000 career point club. The senior now has 698 in his career. LACK OF THREES: The Hawks 3-point field goal streak (329 games) was in jeopardy at Kansas as SJU went 0-for-9 from 3-point range in the first half. The streak stayed intact when Dwayne Lee hit a 3-pointer early in the second half. The Hawks 2-for-18 performance beyond the arc was a low point - the fewest three s in a game last year was a 3-for-19 effort against Penn. 3-Point Field Goals Name Seasons G 3FG 1. Marvin O Connor Jameer Nelson Mark Bass Craig Amos Na im Crenshaw Terrell Myers Brian Leahy Rap Curry Rashid Bey Pat Carroll LARGE LOSS: The 40-point loss to #2 Kansas was the largest losing margin for a Phil Martelli-coached team. The previous was 29 points in two games - vs. Villanova (102-73) in and against #10 Duke (89-60) in the season opener. The bright side for Saint Joseph s is that the Hawks rebounded from that rout to go on to win the Atlantic 10 Tournament and reach the NCAA Sweet 16. CALIFORNIA DREAMING: SJU s trip to San Francisco later this week will mark the fourth consecutive year that the Hawks have visited the Golden State. It will be the fifth trip to northern California in Phil Martelli s 10 years. SJU played in the Pete Newell Challenge in Oakland last season, defeating California, Here s a synopsis of the westward trips under Martelli, in which the Hawks own a 4-2 record: : Pete Newell Challenge (Oakland); vs. Cal, W, : at Pacific, L, : BCA Classic (Berkeley); vs. Eastern Washington, L 68-67; vs. Princeton, W : Cable Car Classic (San Francisco); vs. San Francisco, W 63-50; vs. Harvard, W ROAD WARRIORS: Saint Joseph s has compiled a road record over the last four seasons, and put together a 13-0 mark during the regular season. SJU s lone road loss last year came in the postseason to Xavier in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals. MR. JONES: The play of junior center Dwayne Jones will undoubtedly be a key for the Hawks this year. He s already scored in double figures in the three games, including his fifth career double-double vs. Drexel (20 pts, 13 rebs). His season averages are now 15.0 ppg and 11.7 rpg - last year he averaged 5.3 ppg and 6.4 rpg. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: Pat Calathes, Rob Ferguson and Abdulai Jalloh made their collegiate debuts at Kansas. Calathes and Jalloh each tallied six points while Ferguson went scoreless before fouling out. Calathes, from Lake Howell H.S. in Florida is a 6-10 guard who could see time at the point. Ferguson was Florida s Class 5A Player of the Year in 2003, who redshirted last season. Jalloh was an All-Met player in D.C. for National Christian Academy. All three players have seen playing time right away. IN GOOD COMPANY: Head coach Phil Martelli is in third place on the school s career victory list and ranks fourth in all-time winning percentage behind Jack Ramsay (.765), Jim Lynam (.699) and Jack McKinney (.652).
