After starting the New Year with a four-game winning streak, the Hawks have now lost two in a row, matching their longest losing streak of the season. Ahmad Nivins has averaged 23.3 points in the past three games. The Hawks rank second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring defense, limiting the opponents to 62.0 points per game. Ahmad Nivins is averaging 21.2 points in conference games, while converting 67.3 percent of his field-goal attempts. Phil Martelli owns the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches with 117. His winning percentage in conference games (.650) is the highest among active coaches who have been in the league for more than one season. He also owns the longest tenure at one school of any of the league s coaches. Phil Martelli needs three wins to surpass Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay on SJU s list for coaching victories. 3 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 3 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI Now in his 12th season as head coach at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Martelli turned in another top-notch coaching performance in , as the Hawks went from a record in February to win the final five games of the regular season, and three straight in the conference tournament, to reach the Atlantic 10 championship for the second year in a row, falling just one point short of the title. The Hawks were rewarded with their sixth consecutive postseason bid, but saw the season come to an end in the NIT Second Round, closing with a mark. Martelli s effort was similar to the previous season where he turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the squad that went 30-2, the Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that he guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s 12-year career record is now , but more impressively, his teams have gone in the previous six seasons, an average of over 23 victories per year. He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and needs just three to surpass Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay s total of 234. Martelli is also fourth in winning percentage (.637) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 11 seasons. He is in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A-10. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.680 postseason winning percentage (17-8) and has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in six consecutive years, and eight times in his 11 seasons. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 11 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a numberone national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. At Kenrick, he led his team to six straight Catholic League playoff appearances, a school re c o rd, and still owns the school's all-time mark for wins with 108. M a rtelli began his career as the junior varsity coach at Cardinal O'Hara High in Springfield, PA, for the season. He moved on the following year to become an assistant at his alma mater, where he helped guide Widener to the NCAA Division III Final Four. After that season, he accepted the head job at Kenrick. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College, and Elizabeth is a sophomore attending Saint Joseph s. 4 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 LAST TIME OUT: The Hawks lost a defensive struggle to Fordham, 56-55, in overtime, as Marcus Stout hit a layup with four seconds to go. The Hawks fell behind early, and scored just 21 points in the first half, with Ahmad Nivins (12) and Pat Calathes (9) accounting for all of them. SJU trailed by as much as eight with five minutes to go, but went on a 7-0 run to pull within at 2:09. With the score tied at 50-50, Rob Ferguson s potential game-winning jumper missed at :03. The teams went into overtime and D.J. Rivera rebounded a miss by Ferguson to give the Hawks a lead. The lead was short-lived as Fordham went back down the court and Stout scored the winning basket at :04. SJU s last chance never came about as the inbounds pass was broken up. Nivins finished with 22 points, Calathes had 13 points and nine rebounds and Rivera scored 10 points. LAST YEAR: Saint Joseph s made a strong run at the end of 05-06, winning eight straight games to reach the Atlantic 10 title game against. XU ended the Hawks dreams, with a victory at the U.S. Bank Arena. Here s a synopsis of the game: Saint Joseph s had two chances to win in the final seconds, but the Hawks were unable to convert and fell to in the Atlantic 10 Championship game. The Hawks came from behind to erase a 13-point first half deficit and trailed by three at halftime, A 16-2 run had given a 20-7 lead, but the Hawks used a well-timed timeout to regroup. In the second half, SJU took its first lead since the early moments of the game when the Hawks went ahead with 9:40 to play. Saint Joseph s extended its lead to double digits, 56-46, with 7:19 to go. However, the Musketeers used timely outside shooting to climb back into it, tying the game at 59 with just under two minutes remaining, setting up a wild finish. blocked five of SJU s final six shots, including two attempts by Dwayne Lee in the final two seconds. Chet Stachitas led the Hawks with 23 points, and Pat Calathes and Rob Ferguson scored 14 and 13, respectively. As a team, the Hawks were 24-for-27 from the free-throw line, but that wasn t enough to propel Saint Joseph s as it fell in the A-10 title game for the second consecutive year. JEKYLL AND HYDE: Just when you think the Hawks had it straightened out, some of the early season inconsistencies start popping up again. After a solid start to the conference season (3-0 record; 81.3 ppg; scoring defense of 59.3; 11 turnovers per game), the Hawks now have two consecutive losses. Against Rhode Island they scored 81 but gave up 86 points, and although limiting Fordham to 56 points, SJU scored just 55 while committing 17 turnovers. TWO AGAINST FIVE: A rare occurence happened in the first half at Fordham as Ahmad Nivins and Pat Calathes accounted for all of the Hawks 21 points, with Nivins notching 12 and Calathes tallying nine. Jawan Carter became the first Hawk other than the duo to reach the scoring column when he hit a 3-pointer at 18:19 of the second half. One telling statistic for the first half was that third leading scorer Rob Ferguson did not have a shot, as he was saddled with three early fouls. 3-POINTS THE HARD WAY: In the five conference games combined, Ahmad Nivins has converted a total of 10 3-point plays. The Hawks leading scorer is taking advantage of his free throw shooting, as he is hitting 81.8 percent from the line in league games. IMPROVED NUMBERS: With the focus of the offense resting on their shoulders, Ahmad Nivins, Pat Calathes and Rob Ferguson have upped their numbers. Here s a look at last year s compared to this season s: Nivins Calathes Ferguson Points Rebounds FG% FT% INJURY REPORT: Arvydas Lidzius suffered a fracture in the frontal bone over his left eye in last Monday s practice and did not dress for the Fordham game. He has not been cleared to return to action as of yet, but when that occurs, he will have to wear a protective mask. Lidzius will be sidelined for today s game. Rivera Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week (Jan. 7) D.J. S SPARK: D.J. Rivera has been able to often provide the Hawks with a spark off the bench and he did that again at Fordham. Rivera held the Rams leading scorer Marcus Stout to five points in the second half, although Stout broke free on a switch to get the winning layup. Offensively, Rivera scored all 10 of his points in the second half, including a 3-point play with 3:44 to go in regulation and then what looked to be the game-winning putback at :24. KEEPING THE RESOLUTIONS: The Hawks got the New Year off to a solid start with a drastic change in the numbers from the non-conference games. Here are the numbers in the three conference victories, with a comparison to the games prior to Jan. 3: A-10 Wins Non-Conference Scoring Scoring Defense FG% 54.3% 35.4% 3-pt FG% 53.7% 45.7% FT% 85.2% 69.5% Rebounds Turnovers Assists PHIL S FOUR FRESHMEN: With all due respect to other standout groups of freshmen across the country, the Hawks four guards have started to come into their own and make an impact. At, Jawan Carter, Garrett Williamson, D.J. Rivera and Darrin Govens had collectively, one of their best games so far. Rivera and Govens provided a spark off the bench and combined for 15 points in the first as the Hawks came back from an early deficit. Williamson and Rivera shut down s leading scorer Dionte Christmas, limiting him to nine points. Carter ran the offense and scored nine points while handing out four assists. ON THE LINE: Despite being the top free throw shooting team in the nation last year (79.9), it has been one of the Hawks biggest inconsistencies this season. The percentage has improved with the start of the conference season but with a season-low 42.9% effort against Rhode Island, the Hawks are shooting 70.9%. 5 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 COMEBACK KIDS: The Hawks fought back from a double-digit deficit at Charlotte to pull out a win. It was the largest deficit (13 pts in 1st half; 12 in 2nd) overcome for a win this season. Down with 15:40 to go, the Hawks outscored Charlotte to take their first lead, 57-56, with 6:50 to play. The game featured 64.3 percent shooting and only six turnovers in the second half by the Hawks. SJU fought back from an 18- point deficit against Rhode Island to come within two points, 83-81, with 50 seconds to play, but fell short in the attempt to take the lead. CONFERENCE CALL: In conference games only, the Hawks have three players notching double figures - Ahmad Nivins (21.2 ppg), Pat Calathes (14.6), and Rob Ferguson (14.5). Nivins is shooting 67.3 percent from the field in A-10 contests. THE BIG THREE: The Hawks are getting balanced scoring and have had their three leading scorers- Ahmad Nivins, Rob Ferg u s o n and P a t Calathes - provide 60.5 percent of the offense. In fact, there have been eight games this year in which all three have notched double figures, and the Hawks have won seven of those contests. WHERE S THE D?: The Hawks defense deserted them against Rhode Island, as they gave up a season-high 86 points. It was the highest total produced against SJU since Gonzaga scored 102 on Dec. 31, Saint Joseph s allowed the Rams to shoot 53.7 percent, the best effort for an opponent since Ohio hit 60.4 percent on Dec. 10. Heading into the URI game, the Hawks led the A-10 with a scoring defense of They bounced back with a solid effort at Fordham (56 points), but the Hawks offense fell short in that one. NOTING NIVINS: Ahmad Nivins had another strong week and earned his second consecutive Big 5 Player of the Week honor. In two games, the sophomore averaged 24.0 points and 9.5 rebounds, while shooting 16-for- 22 (72.7%) from the field and 16-for-20 (80%) from the foul line. Nivins had a team-high 20 points in the win at, and then tied his careerhighs with 28 points and 11 rebounds vs. URI. STRONG POINT: Darrin Govens has seen signifcant minutes as of late, averaging 26.8 in conference games. He s averaging 8.6 points while shooting 53.1 percent from the field and making 53.8 percent of his 3-point attempts. After a 14-point game at, Govens followed that with a personal best 17 points against Rhode Island. FERG S FINEST: SJU s coaches told Rob Ferguson he needs to be more aggressive on offense, and he responded with the kind of game against Duquesne that has been expected of him. The junior made seven of his first eight shots to score 17 points in the first half alone, en route to tying his career-high with 22 points. Ferguson also matched his career-high with eight rebounds and blocked a personal best three shots. He s now averaging 11.9 points and 5.2 rebounds, while shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 81 percent from the foul line. FRIDAY NIGHT SPRAINS: Strangely enough, the Hawks have had two players suffer sprained right ankles in two of the last three Friday evening practices. Rob Ferguson injured his on Jan. 5, but started and played 31 minutes two days later at Charlotte, finishing with eight points and six rebounds. Garrett Williamson injured his ankle on Jan. 12, but still made the start the next day vs. Rhode Island. Picking up two quick fouls, Williamson was limited to a season-low eight minutes. GIVEN BY GOVENS: Freshman reserve guard Darrin Govens leads the Hawks in assists (3.29) and tops the A-10 in assist/turnover ratio with 2.2. (on Garrett Williamson): Jameer (Nelson) called me this summer and said, Coach, you ve got a guy that I can t get by. I thought who could that possibly be. Jameer said it was Garrett. (on Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins): I think at the end of the year, those two guys have to be in the discussion for all-league positions. That s what I think has to happen if we re to have success. The bottom line is - at the end of the year, you have to be talking about two of the best 15 players in the league.

6 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 6 Martelli called his best college game, with a career-high 14 points and four assists in 29 minutes. Martelli said it wasn t the points that stood out, but the fact that he had the right pace of the game and had the guys running with him. INSIDE INFO: SJU players are hearing the words, pass it inside more than they have in the past few years, with frontcourt players Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins proving to be the main scoring threats. This is a marked change from the guard-dominated teams of the last few years. Nivins currently leads the team with 17.5 ppg while Ferguson is scoring 11.9 ppg. PAT S PLAY: Pat Calathes has been one of the Hawks more consistent scorers, tallying double figures in all but four games. The junior is second on the team in scoring (12.5), rebounding (6.6) and assists (3.1). He also ranks among the A-10 leaders in six different categories, including blocked shots, rebounding and free throw shooting. DEAN OF COACHES: Phil Martelli owns the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches with 117. His winning percentage in conference games (.646) is also the highest among active coaches who have been in the league for more than one season. Martelli owns the longest tenure at one school of any of the league s coaches. Only Jim Baron of Rhode Island has been in the A-10 longer (14 years), but it s been at two schools, St. Bonaventure and URI. D.J. s DEFENSE: D.J. Rivera has given the Hawks a spark off the bench with his energy and defense. Phil Martelli refers to his fierceness on defense, and equates that to the qualities that Tyrone Barley, one of the Hawks top defenders, brought to the Hawks from Rivera definitely gave the Hawks a boost at, scoring seven first-half points, blocking three shots and helping limit TU s Dionte Christmas to just nine points. Rivera tops the Hawks in steals with 1.5 per game. TO THE POINT: Although Phil Martelli prefers to not label his guards by position, he does have five players capable of running the point, and has the flexibility of using a number of combinations in the backcourt. Jawan Carter is the primary point guard, but at times, Darrin Govens, Pat Calathes, Garrett Williamson and D.J. Rivera have filled that role. YOUTH MOVEMENT: Phil Martelli is giving plenty of minutes to his freshmen, and SJU has often had three or four of them on the court at the same time. Jawan Carter and Garrett Williamson comprise the starting backcourt, with D.J. Rivera and Darrin Govens being among the first players off the bench. Carter ranks fourth on the team in minutes played with 25.9, with Williamson averaging 24.8, with Rivera at 23.8 and Govens seeing 23.2 minutes per game. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Hawks are 5-1 in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse this season and are 58-9 (86.5 winning pct.) over the past seven years. During the course of 58 seasons in the Fieldhouse (counting this one), the Hawks have won 80 percent on the home court, with the overall re c o rd now at THE FOUR FRESHMEN: In the Saint Mary s win, SJU had four freshmen on the court for one of the longest periods of the season thus far (approx. four minutes). The Hawks trailed at the time, but Rockwell Moody, D.J. Rivera, Garrett Williamson, and Darrin Govens (replaced by Jawan Carter) teamed with upperclassman Rob Ferguson, and then Pat Calathes, to overtake the lead, SJU used that momentum to outscore the Gaels, 7-2, at the end of the half and then go into halftime tied, THE COMEBACK KID: Darrin Govens made an extremely quick return to action playing in the Boston University game, just 10 days after having surgery on his fractured right hand (fourth metacarpal). Govens, who had surgery on Nov. 17, asked to participate in practice on Nov. 26, and then was cleared by the doctor just hours before the BU game. DOUBLE DOUBLES: After five games with nine rebounds, Pat Calathes finally hit the double-double mark with career-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds against Rhode Island. Ahmad Nivins also had a double-double in that game with 28 points-11 rebounds. Freshman Garrett Williamson had the first double-double for a Hawk this year with 10 pts-10 rebs against Boston University. STRONG FINISH: After a 4-7 start in conference play last year, Saint Joseph s finished strong, putting together a five-game winning streak heading into the A-10 Tournament, and finishing with a 9-7 mark. The Hawks then went on to win three straight in the conference tournament, before losing to by a point in the championship game. PERIMETER PLAY: SJU seemed to be without that defined 3-point threat that they ve had over the past few years, but Rob Ferguson is close to filling the role. He s currently hitting 44.2 percent from beyond the arc, with Pat Calathes posting the second best number at 42.6 percent. The team is shooting 38.5 percent on the year and made a season-high 10 3-pointers against Duquesne. FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS: Jawan Carter is the first freshman to start at point guard since Jameer Nelson did so in Carter, who hails from the same hometown as Nelson, (Chester, PA), finished his high school career at the Tatnall School as Delaware s all-time leading scorer with 2,464 points. YOUTH BE SERVED: Phil Martelli is putting one of his youngest teams on the floor this year, with five freshmen on the squad of 14. Only three returning players - Rob Ferguson, Pat Calathes, and Ahmad Nivins- averaged double figures in minutes last season. CHESTER PIPELINE: Jawan Carter is not the only Hawk freshman with the Chester, PA, ties. Darrin Govens played for Chester High School and was the Class 4A Pennsylvania Player of the Year while finishing his career with 1,598 points. Carter and Govens are distant cousins and have been friends since they were children. PRESEASON PICKS: The Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10, in the preseason voting of media and coaches. In , SJU finished fifth in the conference after being picked sixth in the preseason. The Hawks took that even one step better, reaching the Atlantic 10 title game and falling two points short to. LONE STAR: Artur Surov is the only senior on the Hawks squad. Arvydas Lidzius entered SJU the same year as Surov, but he sat out last season to concentrate on academics and is classified as a junior this year. Surov and Lidzius are the last remaining players from the NCAA Elite Eight team. Rob Ferguson was also here at SJU that year, but redshirted. SIGN HIM UP: Idris (pronounced E-driss) Hilliard signed a national letter of intent to attend Saint Joseph s and will enroll in the University in the fall of Hilliard, a 6-7, 205-pound forward from Roselle, NJ, and The Hun School (Princeton, NJ), was an All-State Prep First Team selection in He averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, helping his team to a 17-9 record. Hilliard, who averaged 15.0 points as a sophomore, earned 2006 All-League and All-Prep honors, while also being named the 2006 Player of the Year by the Princeton Packet. He is currently listed among the Rivals.com Top 150 players for 2007.

7 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 7 THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 421 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the season. The last game in which a Hawks team did not hit a three was at Southwest Missouri State on Mar. 18, HALLMARK OF SUCCESS: Entering this season, SJU had compiled a record in the past six seasons, with six consecutive postseason berths. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is assisting at Randolph- Macon College. FIVE FRESHMEN: Phil Martelli brought in another stellar recruiting class this year. Freshmen Darrin Govens, D.J. Rivera and Garrett Williamson held three of the five spots on the Pennsylvania All-State 1st Team as chosen by Associated Press. Rounding out the highly-recognized class, Jawan Carter was an All-State honoree and Delaware s Player of the Year, while Rockwell Moody garnered Virginia Independent Schools All-State recognition. Four of the players were 1,000-point scorers in their scholastic c a reers- Carter (2,462); Govens (1,598), Williamson (1,349) Rivera (1,122). The four combined amassed a total of 6,531 points. SJU s recruits also come from succesful high school programs. Carter (Tatnall School), Williamson (Lower Merion) and Moody (Bishop O Connell) saw their teams each win state titles while Govens Chester squad reached the title game (vs. Lower Merion) and Rivera s Neumann-Goretti team captured the Philadelphia Catholic League title. NEW FACES: Phil Mart e l l i has two new faces on the bench with first-year assistant coaches David Duda and Doug Overt o n. Duda served as the head coach at M a rt e l l i s alma mater Widener for the past eight seasons, where he compiled a re c o rd with two conference titles and three trips to the NCAA Division III To u rnament. Overton is a familiar face in Philadelphia basketball, starring at La Salle and then playing in the NBA for 11 seasons, concluding his career with the L.A. Clippers. WAITING ON THE SIDELINE: Philadelphia native Tasheed Carr will sit out this season after transferring to the Hawks from Iowa State. The 6-4 guard averaged 5.8 points and 2.2 rebounds as the Cyclones sixth man last season, and was named to the Big 10 All-Bench Team. Carr attended University City H.S., but then graduated from Mt. Zion Academy in North Carolina. Carr is practicing with SJU and will have two years of eligibility left. IF YOU BUILD IT...: An expansion of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse and a dedicated center for men's and women's basketball highlight a comprehensive plan for enhancing varsity and recreational athletics at SJU. The total project will proceed in three phases over the next several years. Phase one will be the construction of a 17,700-sq. ft. center adjacent to the existing Fieldhouse that will house state-of-the-art facilities for the basketball teams. The center is to include new locker rooms, coaches' offices, meeting areas, and dedicated academic and study space. Phase two will see the relocation of at least five varsity sports and the student recreation/intramural program by 2009 to SJU's Maguire Campus (Episcopal Academy), followed by renovations to the existing Rec Center to house new athletic offices along with locker rooms and meeting space for the remaining varsity sports. A permanent practice area for men's and women's basketball will also be added to the Rec Center during phase two. Phase three is the expansion of the Fieldhouse to include a full-service concourse around the perimeter of the arena and an increase in capacity by at least 1,000 seats. It is expected that men's and women's basketball will need to play one full season off campus during the heaviest construction period, but both squads will retain access to the basketball center and new practice area. WATCHING THE HAWKS: Four SJU games will be televised in Philadelphia on Comcast SportsNet, with more outlets nationally to be announced, via the CSTV Network. The games are Jan. 13 vs. Rhode Island (2 pm); Jan. 21 vs. (Noon); Feb. 4 vs. Dayton (Noon); and Mar. 3 vs. UMass (4 pm). All four game times have changed from the original schedule. The appearances are part of the Atlantic 10 s new agreement with CSTV. MUST-SEE TV: It doesn t have as long of a run as Law and Order, but the most unique coaches tv show in the nation - Phil Martelli s HawkTalk - is in its 11th year. Called the nation s best coach s show by The Sporting News in 2001, Martelli hosts the unscripted show in a Tonight Show setting with a variety of guests. THE HAW K The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century, having celebrated its golden anniversary in One of the most famous mascots in college s p o rts, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and re p resenting the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. B rennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for thre e years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semest e r, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. Jim Miller is this year s Hawk mascot, and the 30th student to wear the wings. He is a junior public administration major from Broomall, PA.

12 SJU 63- Fairfield 47: The Hawks won their season opener for the second year in a row, defeating Fairfield, at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Ahmad Nivins scored a career-high 20 points, with 15 of them in the second half as the Hawks maintained a double-digit lead through the final 20 minutes. Rob Ferguson added 14 points as the Hawks put their new inside game into play. Pat Calathes scored 13 and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, as the Hawks shot 58.8 percent in the second half alone. The game was turnover-ridden as SJU committed 22 while Fairfield had 16. SJU led by as many as 18 points late in the game. SJU 81- Lafayette 73: Solid shooting and a balanced scoring attack helped the Hawks to an win over Lafayette to improve to 2-0. SJU went 27- of-49 from the floor (55.1 percent) and had five players in double figures. Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins led the way for the Hawks, scoring 19 points apiece with freshman Jawan Carter hitting for a personal best 18. After a back-and-forth opening 14 minutes of play, the Hawks began to pull away. Leading 26-24, the Hawks went on an 18-6 run over the next five minutes, capped by a pair of free throws by Carter. SJU would enter halftime up despite the Leopards hitting 62 percent of their shots. In the second half, Saint Joseph's quickly opened an 18-point lead, and held the same advantage, 60-42, at the 11:11 mark. The Hawks committed 16 turnovers in the second half and allowed Lafayette to fight back to within five, 78-73, at :28. But SJU hung on as Pat Calathes converted three free throws to seal the win, as he finished with 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds. SJU 63- Bucknell 53: SJU put together an impressive win over Bucknell, to end a two-game losing streak against the Bison. The Hawks trailed in the early going, 18-12, nine minutes into the game, but then turned up the intensity on defense, forcing three straight Bison turnovers and tying the game, 21-21, with 5:49 to play. Pat Calathes then hit a 3- pointer to give the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish. That started a 13-1 Hawk run, which included seven points from Nivins, that gave SJU a lead with under two minutes left in the half. After a Bison basket, Jawan Carter hit a 3-pointer from the deep left corner to give the Hawks a advantage at the half. Ahmad Nivins had 15 points and nine rebounds, Calathes scored 14 and Rob Ferguson had 11 points. Penn State 65- SJU 61: Penn State erased an eight-point SJU lead with a minute to play to earn the win, giving the Hawks their first loss of the season. A 3-pointer banked in by PSU s Danny Morrissey with 25 seconds to play was the gamewinner. Trailing 62-61, Saint Joseph's last chance came when Ahmad Nivins' shot was blocked by Geary Claxton at :02. Phil Martelli was assessed a technical foul after the play and PSU made three free throws to provide the final margin. SJU had led since the 14:27 mark of the second half, and with 5:07 to play, had a advantage. A layup by Rob Ferguson put the Hawks ahead, 60-52, with 1:20 to play, but PSU would go on to score the next seven points, Ahmad Nivins made one of two free throws before Morrissey hit the game winner at :25.SJU made 11 consecutive free throws before its first miss, and 14 of its first 15, but went cold down the stretch, missing three foul shots, including two on the front ends of one-and-one opportunities. Pat Calathes had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks, with Nivins adding 15 points and eight boards. Jawan Carter notched 11 points. PSU led at halftime, 31-28, as it shot 50 percent from the field. SJU came out strong in the second half, running off the first six points, while shooting 48.5 percent in that half. SJU 55- Boston Univ. 39: SJU s defense keyed the win over Boston University at the Fieldhouse. After a sloppy first half, in which the teams combined for 30 turnovers, the Hawks used their defense to take control in the second half. The Terriers tied the score on a 3-pointer at 12:21, but that would be BU's final field goal of the game. The Hawks then went on a 13-1 run, to take command with a lead. Ahmad Nivins had 12 points and Garrett Williamson had his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Calathes had a career-high 19 points and was the only Hawk in double figures. SJU 75- Bellarmine 63: Ahmad Nivins scored a career-high 28 points and freshman D.J. Rivera had a career-high 19 off the bench to lead Saint Joseph's to a win over Bellarmine in the NABC Classic at Louisville. SJU led from the start but Bellarmine trimmed a Hawk lead to with 5:36 remaining. The Hawks then put together a 13-4 run, with five consecutive points from Rivera to build the lead back up to with 1:28 left in the half. Nivins finished the half with 15 points as the Hawks made 16 of 29 shots (55.2%) from the field. Bellarmine opened the second half with a 9-1 run to close within A layup from Alvin Mofunanya, plus a 3-point play by Rivera and another 3-point play by Nivins quickly built SJU's lead back to at 13:41.The Knights would not fold and closed to with 5:40 remaining. Free throws by the Hawks increased the lead to five, but two foul shots pulled the Knights within three one more time. Then Nivins was fouled as he grabbed one of his six offensive rebounds and converted both shots to give the Hawks a edge. Louisville 74- SJU 64: Louisville led for all but the first two minutes and held a double digit lead for most of the game as the Cardinals defeated Saint Joseph s, 74-64, in the NABC Classic. Ahmad Nivins led the Hawks with 26 points and eight rebounds while Pat Calathes added 19 points and nine boards The Cardinals led by as much as 15, but allowed the Hawks to pull within midway through the second half. The host team went on a 14-5 run, capping it with a 3-pointer to put Louisville up Ohio 79- SJU 72: Ohio shot 65 percent in the second half to put away Saint Joseph's, 79-72, in the final game of the NABC Classic for both teams at Louisville's Freedom Hall on Dec 10. Ohio led the entire game, but the Hawks closed a 12-point deficit to with 8:14 to play, helped by two 3-pointers from Jawan Carter. Then trailing by only at 7:35, the Hawks committed three consecutive turnovers that allowed the Bobcats to build their lead back to Rob Ferguson hit a 3-pointer to again close within at 5:07, but Ohio guard Bubba Walther put away the Hawks with back-to-back 3-pointers, including one that was at least six feet behind the arc, giving OU a lead with under four minutes to play. 13 SJU 55- Saint Mary s 51: Rob Ferguson scored 15 points and D.J. Rivera hit two crucial free throws in the last 11 seconds as Saint Joseph's defeated Saint Mary's, at home. Pat Calathes and Jawan Carter each had 13 points for SJU, playing without leading scorer Ahmad Nivins, who was sidelined with a sprained ankle. The Hawks started the second half with 11 unanswered points to take a lead and led with 11:37 left to play. SMC then went on a 13-4 spurt, and the Gaels tied the score on a layup at the 5:11 mark. SJU moved ahead before a Gaels layup by narrowed the gap to with 2:07 remaining. Neither team scored again, as Garrett Williamson had a key block at :04, and Rivera's two free throws accounted for the final score. Hofstra 65- SJU 63: SJU was the victim of a last-second shot and fell to Hofstra by two points, 65-63, for the second year in a row. Loren Stokes jumper with 2.2 seconds left was the gamewinner, as the Hawks squandered 10-point leads in both halves. Hofstra trailed with 13:17 to play but went on an 8-0 run. The Hawks still led with 9:21 left, but they managed just one field goal the rest of the way, suddenly struggling against Hofstra's 2-3 zone defense. SJU 89- Duquesne 41: Rob Ferguson scored 17 of his career-high 22 points in the first half as Saint Joseph s dominated Duquesne, 89-41, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. Ferguson made seven of his first eight shots from the field as the Hawks stormed out to a 21-6 lead in the first 10 minutes. The junior tied his career-high in both points (22) and rebounds (8). Ahmad Nivins had 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting while freshman D.J. Rivera notched 14 points off the bench. Pat Calathes had 12 points, eight rebounds and tied his career-high with seven assists.
