3 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 3 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI Now in his 12th season as head coach at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Martelli turned in another top-notch coaching performance in , as the Hawks went from a record in February to win the final five games of the regular season, and three straight in the conference tournament, to reach the Atlantic 10 championship for the second year in a row, falling just one point short of the title. The Hawks were rewarded with their sixth consecutive postseason bid, but saw the season come to an end in the NIT Second Round, closing with a mark. Martelli s effort was similar to the previous season where he turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the squad that went 30-2, the Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that he guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s 12-year career record is now , but more impressively, his teams have gone in the previous six seasons, an average of over 23 victories per year. He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and needs just eight to surpass Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay s total of 234. Martelli is also fourth in winning percentage (.638) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 11 seasons. He is in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A-10. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.680 postseason winning percentage (17-8) and has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in six consecutive years, and eight times in his 11 seasons. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 11 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a numberone national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. At Kenrick, he led his team to six straight Catholic League playoff appearances, a school re c o rd, and still owns the school's all-time mark for wins with 108. M a rtelli began his career as the junior varsity coach at Cardinal O'Hara High in Springfield, PA, for the season. He moved on the following year to become an assistant at his alma mater, where he helped guide Widener to the NCAA Division III Final Four. After that season, he accepted the head job at Kenrick. As a player, the St. Joseph s Prep graduate was part of Wi d e n e r s NCAA To u rnament teams in both and , serving as team co-captain as a s e n i o r. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College, and Elizabeth is a sophomore attending Saint Joseph s. 4 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 LAST TIME OUT: Ohio shot 65 percent in the second half to put away Saint Joseph's, 79-72, in the final game of the NABC Classic for both teams at Louisville's Freedom Hall on Dec 10. Ohio led the entire game, but the Hawks closed a 12-point deficit to with 8:14 to play, helped by two 3-pointers from Jawan Carter. Then trailing by only at 7:35, the Hawks committed three consecutive turnovers that allowed the Bobcats to build their lead back to Rob Ferguson hit a 3-pointer to again close within at 5:07, but Ohio guard Bubba Walther put away the Hawks with backto-back 3-pointers, including one that was at least six feet behind the arc, giving OU a lead with under four minutes to play. With the Hawks pressing, D.J. Rivera stole the ball in the backcourt and Garrett Williamson converted the layup and the ensuing free throw to cut the SJU deficit to at :50. But with the Hawks forced to foul, Ohio made 6-of-6 from the line in the final 30 seconds to ice the game. AHMAD S WEEK: Ahmad Nivins was named the Atlantic 10 Co- Player of the Week on Dec. 9, sharing the award with Rhode I s l a n d s Jimmy Baron. Nivins averaged 27.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the first two games of the NABC Classic, with a careerhigh 28 in the win over Bellarmine. He shot 21-for-29 (.724) from the floor in the two games. The sophomore then scored eight points in the Hawks loss to Ohio, but earned NABC Classic All- Tournament honors. In the three games, Nivins averaged 21.6 points and 8.0 rebounds. INJURY REPORT: The Hawks have two players with sprained ankles - leading scorer Ahmad Nivins and reserve Marcus Mitchell. Nivins sprained his right ankle in practice on Dec. 13 and Mitchell injured his on Dec. 17. Both are doubtful for the game and Nivins is hopeful of returning for the Holiday Festival. Rockwell Moody missed the three games of the NABC Classic after injuring his right hand in the Dec. 7 practice and receiving stitches. The stitches have since been removed and Moody has returned to practice. CALLING ON ALVIN: Sophomore Alvin Mofunanya will most likely get the start in place of the injured Ahmad Nivins. Mofunanya has two career starts to his credit, last season in place of the injured Dave Mallon. In his first start against (Feb. 4, 2006), he recorded a career-high 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting in 21 minutes played. PLAYER OF THE WEEK JINX?: Not sure if being named the A-10 Player of the Week can jinx a player, but Ahmad Nivins earned the conference honor on Dec. 9, and then sprained his right ankle in practice on Dec. 13. He is hopeful of returning for the Holiday Festival on Dec. 28 and 29. STEALING AWAY: The Hawks rank second in the Atlantic 10 in steals per game (8.78) while D.J. Rivera is also second with 2.22 per game. SJU registered a season-high 16 steals in the Bellarmine win, which was the most for the Hawks since the NCAA Second Round win over Liberty in Rivera also had a career-high six steals against Bellarmine which was also the most since Jameer Nelson had six in that game. HONOR ROLL Ahmad Nivins Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week (Dec. 9) NABC Classic All-Tournament Team THE COMEBACK KID: Darrin Govens made an extremely quick return to action playing in the Boston University game, just 10 days after having surg e ry on his fractured right hand (fourt h metacarpal). Govens, who had surgery on Nov. 17, asked to participate in practice on Nov. 26, and then was cleared by the doctor just hours before the BU game. The freshman made an impact, playing 24 minutes and scoring 11 points, while making 3-of-3 3-point field goals. He s now averaging 19.0 minutes per game. DEE-FENSE: The Hawks limited BU to a dismal 2-for-20 shooting effort in the second half of the win. The Terriers scored their last field goal of the game with 12:21 to play, while amassing 26 turnovers in the contest. DOUBLE TIME: Freshman Garrett Williamson had a solid allaround effort against Boston University, notching his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The freshman shot 5-for-8 from the field and keyed the defense with a season-best three steals. He played a season-high 36 minutes against Drexel and scored seven points while recording three steals. INSIDE INFO: SJU players might be hearing the words, pass it inside more than they have in the past few years, with frontcourt players Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins already proving to be the main scoring threats. This is a marked change from the guard-dominated teams of the last few years. Nivins currently leads the team with 16.0 ppg while Ferguson is scoring 10.9 ppg. YOUTH MOVEMENT: Phil Martelli is giving plenty of minutes to his freshmen, and SJU has often had three or four of them on the court at the same time. Jawan Carter and Garrett Williamson comprise the starting backcourt, with D.J. Rivera and Darrin Govens being among the first players off the bench. Williamson is fourth on the team in minutes played, averaging 28.7, with Carter at 26.0 and Rivera at ON THE LINE: The top free throw shooting team in the nation last year (79.9), SJU is shooting 72.8 percent from the line this season, which ranks the Hawks 50th in the latest NCAA stats. The team came up short down the stretch at State as the Hawks had made 11 in a row, and 14 of their first 15, but in the final minute of play, missed three free throws, including two that were front ends of a one-and-one. SJU bounced back to make 17-of-23 free throws against BU, but then struggled again to hit only 7-for-12 in the Drexel loss. LOW POINTS: Among the lowlights from the loss to Drexel on Dec. 2: shot 29% from the field in the first half saw Drexel block 13 shots went for 13 minutes in the first half without a field goal went without a field goal for 13 minutes in the first half only one player in double figures (Pat Calathes - 19 points)

5 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 LOSING THE LEAD: SJU lost an eight-point lead at State in the final 1:20, allowing the home team to make eight free throws and hit two 3-pointers during that span. The Hawks struggled from the line in the final minute, missing the front ends of two one-and-one opportunities, and another in a two-shot foul. THE DEFENDERS: The Hawks turned up the defense against Bucknell and that was one of the keys to the win. Freshman D.J. Rivera came off the bench to harrass the Bison offense and record four steals. The freshman earned high praise from Phil Martelli as he called Rivera s effort Barley-like, referring to former Hawk Ty rone Barley ( ), who was known for his tenacious defense. Martelli also heaped praise on Garrett Williamson for his defense in the win over Boston University, also mentioning Barley and saying, I thought Garrett Williamson s defense really turned the game. CLOSE, BUT...: Pat Calathes and Ahmad Nivins have come close to recording double-doubles this season, just falling one rebound short. These games were: Calathes: 13 pts-9 rebs vs. Fairfield Nivins: 20 pts- 9 rebs vs. Fairfield Calathes: 10 pts- 9 rebs vs. Lafayette Nivins: 15 pts- 9 rebs vs. Bucknell Calathes: 19 pts- 9 rebs vs. Drexel Freshman Garrett Williamson is the only one thus far to notch double digits in points and rebounds with his 10 pt-10 reb effort against Boston Univ. SHORT TRIPS: The Hawks won t be racking up the frequent flyer miles this year, as it is first time in four seasons that SJU does not have a West Coast trip on its schedule. But Saint Joseph s will be returning to one of its favorite arenas, Madison Square Garden, for the Holiday Festival next week. This will be the fourth consecutive year that the Hawks will be playing at least one game at MSG. HIGH HONOR: Freshman Darrin Govens had his Chester High School uniform number retired (13) on December 1 in a banquet at Chester. SHOOTING STARS: To be successful this year, the Hawks need consistent scoring from Ahmad Nivins and Rob Ferguson, but right now, both players are averaging under 10 shots per game. (Nivins- 8.6; Ferguson- 8.3) Drexel limited the duo to a combined total of 10 shots, with Nivins going 0-for-5. GIVEAWAYS: Turnovers are still plaguing the Hawks, as they average 17.4 per game, with 19 or more in four games. The opponents average is 17.6, helped by 26 from Boston and 23 from Drexel. PERIMETER PLAY: SJU entered the season without that defined 3- point threat that they ve had over the past few years. The team is shooting just 37.2 percent but is led by Jawan Carter at 45.5 percent and Rob Ferguson at 45.2 percent. HAWK DOUBLES Double-Figure Points Streak Career Ahmad Nivins Pat Calathes Rob Ferguson Jawan Carter Garrett Williamson D.J. Rivera Alvin Mofunanya Double-Figure Rebounds Streak Career Garrett Williamson Ahmad Nivins Point Games Streak Career Ahmad Nivins Rob Ferguson Double-Doubles (pts-rebs) Streak Career Garrett Williamson Ahmad Nivins HAWK LEADERS (number of games led in each category; includes shared highs) Points Rebounds Assists Steals Blocks Ahmad Nivins Pat Calathes Rob Ferguson Jawan Carter Garrett Williamson D.J. Rivera Alvin Mofunanya Darrin Govens What Phil s Saying... (on Garrett Williamson): Jameer (Nelson) called me this summer and said, Coach, you ve got a guy that I can t get by. I thought who could that possibly be. Jameer said it was Garrett. Garrett has a fire in his belly that really drives him... It thought his defense really turned the (BU) game. (on D.J. Rivera s defense against Bucknell): He s a fierce competitor. Certainly at the defensive end of the floor you re going to get maximum effort.. You have to look at the tape to figure out how he got two of those balls. But the two balls he came up, and this is with the greatest reverence, that was like Tyrone Barley. One second the guy had the ball and all of a sudden he (D.J) had it. I was happy with the toughness at that point. (on Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins): I think at the end of the year, those two guys have to be in the discussion for all-league positions. That s what I think has to happen if we re to have success. The bottom line is - at the end of the year, you have to be talking about two of the best 15 players in the league. FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS: Jawan Carter is the first freshman to start at point guard since Jameer Nelson did so in Carter, who hails from the same hometown as Nelson, (Chester,

6 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 6 PA), finished his high school career at the Tatnall School as Delaware s all-time leading scorer with 2,464 points. PAT S POINTS: The Hawks are looking for big things from 6-10 guard Pat Calathes. The junior came on strong at the end of last year, averaging 10.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists in the final seven games. He had four double-figure scoring games, shot 48.2 percent (27-for-56) from the field and made 15 of 16 free throws during that span. He s gotten off to a good start with six double-figure scoring games to average 11.8 ppg, while grabbing 6.8 rebounds per game. Included in that was a career-high 19 points vs. Drexel. YOUTH BE SERVED: Phil Martelli is putting one of his youngest teams on the floor this year, with five freshmen on the squad of 14. Only three returning players - Rob Ferguson, Pat Calathes, and Ahmad Nivins- averaged double figures in minutes last season. Ferguson averaged 30.6 minutes per game, with Nivins seeing 22.7 minutes and Calathes posting just 17 per game. The freshmen have already seen ample playing time and on a number of instances, Jawan Carter, D.J. Rivera and Garrett Williamson have been on the floor at the same time. CHESTER PIPELINE: Jawan Carter is not the only Hawk freshman with the Chester, PA, ties. Darrin Govens played for Chester High School and was the Class 4A sylvania Player of the Year while finishing his career with 1,598 points. Carter and Govens are distant cousins and have been friends since they were children. DEAN OF COACHES: Phil Martelli owns the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches with 114. His winning percentage in conference games (.647) is also the highest among active coaches who have been in the league for more than one season. Martelli owns the longest tenure at one school of any of the league s coaches. Only Jim Baron of has been in the A-10 longer (14 years), but it s been at two schools, and URI. PRESEASON PICKS: The Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10, in the preseason voting of media and coaches. In , SJU finished fifth in the conference after being picked sixth in the preseason. The Hawks took that even one step better, reaching the Atlantic 10 title game and falling two points short to. Freshman Jawan Carter was named to the Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. LONE STAR: Artur Surov is the only senior on the Hawks squad. Arvydas Lidzius entered SJU the same year as Surov, but he sat out last season to concentrate on academics and is classified as a junior this year. Surov and Lidzius are the last remaining players from the NCAA Elite Eight team. Rob Ferguson was also here at SJU that year, but redshirted the season. SIGN HIM UP: Idris (pronounced E-driss) Hilliard signed a national letter of intent to attend Saint Joseph s and will enroll in the University in the fall of We are delighted to add Idris to our program. He is first, and foremost, a terrific young man with an exceptional work ethic. He has the multiple skills that lead me to believe he will have a successful career here at Saint Joseph s, said Martelli. Hilliard, a 6-7, 205-pound forward from Roselle, NJ, and The Hun School (Princeton, NJ), was an All-State Prep First Team selection in He averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, helping his team to a 17-9 record. Hilliard, who averaged 15.0 points as a sophomore, earned 2006 All-League and All-Prep honors, while also being named the 2006 Player of the Year by the Princeton Packet. He is currently listed among the Rivals.com Top 150 players for THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 402 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the season. The last game in which a Hawks team did not hit a three was at Southwest Missouri State on Mar. 18, NO PLACE LIKE HOME: SJU played only had nine games in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse last season and compiled a 5-4 re c o rd. This year, t h e Hawks will have 11 home games on campus. Heading into this season SJU owned a 53-8 re c o rd in the Fieldhouse over the previous six years (86.8 winning percentage). During the course of 57 seasons in the Fieldhouse, the Hawks have won 80 percent of their contests, with the overall re c o rd now HALLMARK OF SUCCESS: Entering this season, SJU had compiled a record in the past six seasons, with six consecutive postseason berths. FRESH FACES: Phil Martelli brought in another stellar recruiting class this year. Freshmen Darrin Govens, D.J. Rivera and Garrett Williamson held three of the five spots on the sylvania All- State 1st Team as chosen by Associated Press. Rounding out the highly-recognized class, Jawan Carter was an All-State honoree and Delaware s Player of the Year, while Rockwell Moody garnered Virginia Independent Schools All-State recognition. Four of the players were 1,000-point scorers in their scholastic careers- Carter (2,462); Govens (1,598), Williamson (1,349) Rivera (1,122). The four combined amassed a total of 6,531 points. SJU s recruits also come from succesful high school programs. Carter (Ta t n a l l School), Williamson (Lower Merion) and Moody (Bishop O Connell) saw their teams each win state titles while Govens Chester squad reached the title game (vs. Lower Merion) and Rivera s Neumann- Goretti team captured the Philadelphia Catholic League title. NEW FACES: Phil Mart e l l i has two new faces on the bench with firstyear assistant coaches David Duda and Doug Overt o n. Duda served as the head coach at Mart e l l i s alma mater Widener for the past eight seasons, where he compiled a re c o rd with two conference titles and t h ree trips to the NCAA Division III To u rnament. Overton is a familiar face in Philadelphia basketball, starring at and then playing in the NBA for 11 seasons, concluding his career with the L.A. Clippers. An All-Big 5 selection, he also played for the Philadelphia 76ers and came to SJU after a year as the director of player development for that team. F o rmer SJU standout Mark Bass is the veteran on the staff, as he is now in his eighth year with Martelli. Duda and Overton replaced Monte Ross, who is now the head coach at the University of Delaware, and Mike Rice, who is associate coach at the University of Pittsburgh.

7 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 7 WAITING ON THE SIDELINE: Philadelphia native Tasheed Carr will sit out this season after transferring to the Hawks from Iowa State. The 6-4 guard averaged 5.8 points and 2.2 rebounds as the Cyclones sixth man last season, and was named to the Big 10 All- Bench Team. Carr attended University City H.S., but then graduated from Mt. Zion Academy in North Carolina. Carr can practice with SJU and will have two years of eligibility left. IF YOU BUILD IT...: An expansion of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse and a dedicated center for men's and women's basketball highlight a comprehensive plan for enhancing varsity and recreational athletics at Saint Joseph's. The total project will proceed in three phases over the next several years. Phase one will be the construction of a 17,700-square foot center adjacent to the existing Fieldhouse that will house state-of-the-art facilities for men's and women's basketball. The center is to include new locker rooms, coaches' offices, meeting areas, and dedicated academic and study space. Phase two will see the relocation of at least five varsity sports and the student recreation/intramural program by 2009 to SJU's Maguire Campus (Episcopal Academy), followed by renovations to the existing Rec Center to house new athletic offices along with locker rooms and meeting space for the remaining varsity sports. A permanent practice area for men's and women's basketball will also be added to the Rec Center during phase two. Phase three is the expansion of the Fieldhouse to include a full-service concourse around the perimeter of the arena and an increase in capacity by at least 1,000 seats. It is expected that men's and women's basketball will need to play one full season off campus during the heaviest construction period, but both squads will retain access to the basketball center and new practice area. Jack McKinney ( 57) L.A. Lakers, Indiana (5) George Senesky ( 43) Philadelphia (3) Jim O Brien ( 74) Philadelphia, Boston (5) LOOKING AHEAD: SJU takes a break for Christmas and re t u rns to action at the Aeropostale Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. On December 28, the Hawks take on, the team which eliminated them from last season s NIT. St. John s and Boston University will face o ff in the second game with the losers of both games playing in the consolation (6:30 p.m.) on December 29 and the winners meeting in the championship (8:30 p.m.). Conference play starts after the New Ye a r when the Hawks host on January 3. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is assisting at Randolph-Macon College. H AWKS IN THE PROS: Saint Joseph s is currently re p resented in the NBA by 2004 first-round picks Jameer Nelson (Orlando Magic) and Delonte West (Boston Celtics), as well as 2005 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Dwayne Jones (Cleveland Cavaliers). Here are their curre n t s t a t s : Nelson - 23 starts, 12.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 4.0 apg West - 21 games, 8.0 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 3.2 apg Jones - no game action CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is now tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. Indiana tops the list with 11 graduates that have coached in the league. Below is the list of former Hawks who have been NBA head coaches. Player (Class) NBA Teams W-L (yrs.) INTERNET: Information for Saint Joseph s basketball is found at SJU s athletic website, with game notes, and live in-game statistics for all Hawk home games, and selected road games. The newly redesigned site introduces video streaming for the first time this year. Through Hawks All-Access, fans can watch and listen to every game from Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. THE HAW K The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century, having celebrated its golden anniversary in One of the most famous mascots in college s p o rts, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and re p resenting the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. B rennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for thre e years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semest e r, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. Jim Miller is this year s Hawk mascot, and the 30th student to wear the wings. He is a junior public administration major from Broomall, PA.
