5 SENIOR DESMOND PENIGAR WAS NAMED FIRST-TEAM ALL-BIG WEST AFTER LEADING UTAH STATE IN SCORING (17.2) AND REBOUNDING (6.9) LAST YEAR. 5

6 I m apprehensive about some things regarding the season, but I m also very excited about some things. We have the potential to be a very athletic group and cause some problems for our opponents with our athleticism. This team has the chance to be one of the most athletic teams we have ever had if we can stay healthy and commit to the defensive end and to playing hard. We also need to find a way to replace the senior leadership and chemistry we have had over recent years and develop an understanding of why we have been successful in the past. Utah State Head Coach Stew Morrill. Entering his fifth year as head coach of the Utah State basketball program, Stew Morrill s philosophy has remained the same and that philosophy revolves around team defense. In each of the last three years, Morrill s teams have finished in the top-20 in the country in points allowed and field goal percentage defense. And the success the Aggies have had defensively has translated into winning basketball games, and a lot of them. Over the past three years, Utah State has posted an incredible (.798) overall record including a 50-9 (.847) mark in the Big West Conference. The Aggies have posted three straight 20-win seasons and advanced to postseason play in each of those years. Furthermore, USU has claimed two regular season championships and two tournament championships in the past three years and has gone 8-1 in the SQUAD BREAKDOWN LETTERWINNERS RETURNING (8) Player (Pos., Ht., Wt., Cl.) Entering the season, Utah State returns three starters and eight letterwinners from a team that went 23-8 on the season, tied for firstplace in the Big West Conference with a 13-5 league mark, advanced to the championship game of the conference tournament and participated in the 2002 National Invitation Tournament. Add to the mix four players who sat out the season for various reasons and four newcomers and the Aggies seem poised to make yet another run at a league championship, and perhaps, its fourth-straight 20-win season and fourth-straight trip to postseason play, both of which would be school records. Leading the way for Utah State will be senior forward Desmond Penigar who was a first-team all-league selection as a junior, along with being named to the Big West Conference all-tournament team and earning three player of the week honors during the course of the season. Penigar finished the year second in the conference in scoring (17.2) and sixth in rebounding (6.9). Desmond had a very good year for us last season and we expect him to be better as a senior, said Morrill. He needs to continue to grow defensively and become more consistent on the boards, along with committing to being a team leader. Joining Penigar as returning starters this year will be senior guard Ronnie Ross and senior forward Toraino Johnson. Ross started all but one game for USU at the point in his first year in an Aggie uniform and finished the season ranked fourth in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.73-to-1.00) and 10th in assists (3.06). Johnson, who missed 10 games in a row at the beginning of the year with a foot injury, finished the season strong and averaged 4.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Utah State also welcomes back two other seniors in Mike Ahmad and Mike Puzey, and both should make significant contributions in their final season. Ahmad averaged 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game as a junior but showed signs of brilliance in the final two games of the season as he scored 12 points in the championship game of the conference tournament and followed that up with seven points in just nine minutes against Montana State in the opening round of the National SENIOR FORWARD DESMOND PENIGAR 6

7 Invitation Tournament. Puzey, who sat out the season after transferring from the University of Utah will give the Aggies another solid post player. Along with the five seniors mentioned above, Utah State welcomes back junior Chad Evans who started the first 17 games of the season at one of the forward positions and averaged 6.6 points and 5.2 rebounds as a starter. Joining Evans are three sophomores who saw action in their first years as Aggies in guards Calvin Brown and Mike Stowell, and forward Spencer Nelson who redshirted last season. Nelson, who hasn t played for Utah State since the season, should have a solid year for the Aggies if he can fully recover from a knee injury that sidelined him all of last season. Redshirt freshman Nate Harris, a former player of the year in the state of Utah, will also add depth and a lot of talent to the Aggie front line after averaging 23 points and 13 rebounds as a prep senior. Joining the Aggie team this year will be five newcomers, all junior college transfers, that Street and Smith s Magazine calls the ninth-best junior college recruiting class in the country. The cream of the crop are guards Mark Brown and Greg Patton, and forward Cardell Butler. Brown was named the Southern California Junior College Player of the Year as a sophomore, while Patton and Butler are two of the most athletic players in recent memory to wear the Aggie Blue and White. SCHEDULE Utah State will play 29 games during the course of the season, including two exhibition games. USU will have 14 games at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, a venue where the Aggies have gone 82-5 (.943) over the past six seasons. Among the home games will be two highly anticipated encounters with instate rivals Utah and Weber State. Utah State will also host Idaho State, Arkansas State and the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the ninth annual Gossner Foods Classic and travel to Hilo, Hawai i to participate in the Hilo Shootout with Drake, Vermont and Hilo during the Thanksgiving holiday. Our schedule has a lot of challenges and it begins with the first game of the year at a very good Missouri Valley Conference team in Illinois State, said Morrill. We have a lot more road games than I would like, but those types of challenges will hopefully help us grow as we head into the league season. The Big West Conference schedule will remain the same as it did during the season with each team playing 18 league games. Two of those games will be televised by Fox Sports Net West 2 as the Aggies host UC Irvine on Thur., Feb. 13 and Cal State Northridge on Thur., Mar. 6. For the third straight year, the Big West Tournament will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Mar The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be held from Mar sophomore. The Aggies will also have the services of sophomore Calvin Brown who averaged 1.1 points and 1.7 assists per game last year as a backup to Ross. SHOOTING GUARDS Greg Patton, 6-1, 175, Jr., JC Mike Stowell, 6-3, 210, So., 1L The one real question mark heading into the season is with the shooting guard position and finding someone to fill the shoes of All-American Tony Brown who graduated last year as the seventh all-time leading scorer in Utah State history. The Aggies return two players that saw limited action as freshmen in Mike Stowell and Kevin Williams who both averaged around one point per game. USU also added junior college transfer Greg Patton who averaged 10.3 points and 4.2 assists as a sophomore at Northeastern Junior College. A fourth player who will see significant time here is Ross, who may be moved back to his natural position, which is the two guard. SMALL FORWARDS Cardell Butler, 6-4, 210, Jr., JC Chad Evans, 6-7, 220, Jr., 2L *Toraino Johnson, 6-4, 215, Sr., 2L John Neil, 6-5, 215, Jr., JC * - returning starter In effect, Utah State returns two starters at the small forward position in senior Toraino Johnson and junior Chad Evans. Evans started the first 17 games of the season and averaged 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, while Johnson started the final 14 games of the year and averaged 4.3 points and 3.6 rebounds. Both players should once again see plenty of playing time, as should junior college transfer Cardell Butler who averaged 10.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore at the College of Southern Idaho. The fourth player in the mix is John Neil who transferred from Canada Junior College. Neil may redshirt for USU this season after spending the last two years on an LDS Church Mission in Venezuela. POINT GUARDS Calvin Brown, 5-10, 160, So., 1L Mark Brown, 5-10, 155, Jr., JC *Ronnie Ross, 6-1, 190, Sr., 1L * - returning starter Utah State has a lot of talent and a lot of depth at the point guard position with the return of starting senior Ronnie Ross to go along with sophomore backup Calvin Brown and junior college transfer Mark Brown. Ross started all but one game for USU at the point during his junior year and averaged 7.1 points and 3.1 assists per game. Despite that experience, Ross may end up seeing more time at the shooting guard position because of the talent of Mark Brown, who led Saddleback Junior College to a state championship his sophomore season and a 66-7 record in his two years on campus. Brown, who was MVP of his conference both seasons, averaged 15.0 points and 4.8 assists as a SENIOR GUARD RONNIE ROSS 7

8 POWER FORWARDS Nate Harris, 6-6, 225, Fr., RS Spencer Nelson, 6-7, 230, So., RS *Desmond Penigar, 6-7, 245, Sr., 1L * - returning starter Perhaps the most talented player in the Big West returns for Utah State at the power forward position in senior Desmond Penigar. Penigar earned first-team all-league honors as a junior in his first season at USU and ended the year by leading the team in scoring and rebounding. Penigar led USU in scoring in 16 of the 31 games played and scored 20 or more points on nine different occasions. Joining Penigar will be two players who redshirted last season in freshman Nate Harris and sophomore Spencer Nelson. Nelson hasn t played for USU since the season, but has the talent to be a dominant force for the Aggies at both the small and power forward positions, while Harris possesses the same skills and knowledge of the game that former Aggie great Tony Brown had. CENTERS Mike Ahmad, 6-9, 245, Sr., 1L Ian McVey, 6-10, 210, Jr., JC Mike Puzey, 6-9, 245, Sr., TR Despite the loss of starting center Jeremy Vague from a year ago, USU feels it is pretty solid at this position with the return of senior Mike Ahmad to go along with senior Mike Puzey. Ahmad averaged 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game as a junior in limited action and has the talent to be one of the most athletic big men in the conference. Puzey will give the Aggies a solid lowpost defender and another big man with a good touch around the basket. Joining Ahmad and Puzey will be junior college transfer Ian McVey who averaged 17.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game as a sophomore at Fergus Falls Junior College in Minnesota. McVey, who was highly recruited out of high school as a high jumper, should get a chance to show off his athleticism as well. TOP-10 JUCO RECRUITING CLASSES FOR 2002 BY STREET & SMITH S MAGAZINE 1.
